Correlated X-ray timing and spectral behavior of GX 349+2: RXTE PCA data

We present a detailed and systematic investigation of correlated spectral and timing properties of the Z source GX 349+2, using a huge amount (about 40 ks) of good quality data from September 29, 1998 to October 13, 1998, obtained with the Proportional-Counter-Array on-board RXTE satellite. We, for the first time, give a detailed comparison between the normal-branch-properties and the flaring-branch-properties of this source, as it shows an extended normal branch (which is a rare phenomenon for it) for our case. In our work, the properties of the peaked noise are analyzed as functions of the position on the Z-track (in color-color-diagram), and they are discussed in connection with the peaked noise seen for another Z source Cyg X-2 (at low overall intensities). This will help to construct theoretical models for the peaked noise, as well as to understand the physics behind the Z-shaped tracks traced by these kind of sources in color-color-diagram. We also find a QPO (centroid frequency is about 3.8 Hz) at the upper part of the flaring branch. This is for the first time, a QPO is seen from this source and hence is very important in understanding the nature of its X-ray emitting components.

Millisecond X-Ray Pulsar SAX J1808.4-3658: Limits to the Mass and the Radius of the Compact Star

We predict from a survey of equations of state and observations of X-ray pulsations from SAX J1808.4-3658, that the upper limit of the mass of the compact star is 2.27 solar mass. The corresponding upper limit of the radius comes out to be 9.73 km. We also do a study to estimate the lower limit of the mass of the compact star. Such a limit is very useful to put constraints on equations of state. We also discuss the implications of the upper mass limit for the detection of the source in radio frequencies. We point out that the possible observation of radio-eclipse may be able to rule out several soft equation of state models, by setting a moderately high value for the lower limit of inclination angle.

A study of accretion discs around rapidly rotating neutron stars in general relativity and its applications to four Low Mass X-ray Binaries

We calculate the accretion disc temperature profiles, disc luminosities and boundary layer luminosities for rapidly rotating neutron stars considering the full effect of general relativity. We compare the theoretical values of these quantities with their values inferred from EXOSAT data for four low mass X-ray binary sources: XB 1820-30, GX 17+2, GX 9+1 and GX 349+2 and constrain the values of several properties of these sources. According to our calculations, the neutron stars in GX 9+1 and GX 349+2 are rapidly rotating and stiffer equations of state are unfavoured.

General Relativistic Spectra from Accretion Disks around Rapidly Rotating Neutron Stars

We compute spectra from accretion disks around rapidly rotating neutron stars. The full effect of general relativity is considered for the structure calculation of the stars. We take into account the Doppler shift, gravitational redshift and light-bending effects in order to compute the observed spectra. To facilitate direct comparison with observations, a simple empirical function is presented which describes the numerically computed spectra well. This function can in principle be used to distinguish between the Newtonian spectra and the relativistic spectra. We also discuss the possibility of constraining neutron star's equation of state using our spectral models.

Limits to the Mass and the Radius of the Compact Star in SAX J1808.4--3658 and Their Implications

We show that a survey of equations of state and observations of X-ray pulsations from SAX J1808.4-3658 give 2.27 solar mass as the upper limit of the compact star mass. The corresponding upper limit of the radius comes out to be 9.73 km. We also do a probabilistic study to estimate the lower limit of the mass of the compact star. Such a limit puts useful constraints on equations of state. We also discuss the implications of the upper mass limit for the the evolutionary history of the source, as well as the detection of it in radio frequencies. We envisage that the possible observation of radio-eclipse may be able to rule out several soft equation of state models, by setting a moderately high value for the lower limit of inclination angle.

Temperature profiles of accretion discs around rapidly rotating strange stars in general relativity: a comparison with neutron stars

We compute the temperature profiles of accretion discs around rapidly rotating strange stars, using constant gravitational mass equilibrium sequences of these objects, considering the full effect of general relativity. Beyond a certain critical value of stellar angular momentum ($J$), we observe the radius ($r_{\rm orb}$) of the innermost stable circular orbit (ISCO) to increase with J (a property seen neither in rotating black holes nor in rotating neutron stars). The reason for this is traced to the crucial dependence of $dr_{\rm orb}/dJ$ on the rate of change of the radial gradient of the Keplerian angular velocity at $r_{\rm orb}$ with respect to $J$. The structure parameters and temperature profiles obtained are compared with those of neutron stars, as an attempt to provide signatures for distinguishing between the two. We show that when the full gamut of strange star equation of state models, with varying degrees of stiffness are considered, there exists a substantial overlap in properties of both neutron stars and strange stars. However, applying accretion disc model constraints to rule out stiff strange star equation of state models, we notice that neutron stars and strange stars exclusively occupy certain parameter spaces. This result implies the possibility of distinguishing these objects from each other by sensitive observations through future X-ray detectors.

General relativistic spectra of accretion discs around rapidly rotating neutron stars: Effect of light bending

We present computed spectra, as seen by a distant observer, from the accretion disc around a rapidly rotating neutron star. Our calculations are carried out in a fully general relativistic framework, with exact treatment of rotation. We take into account the Doppler shift, gravitational redshift and light bending effects in order to compute the observed spectrum. We find that light bending significantly modifies the high-energy part of the spectrum. Computed spectra for slowly rotating neutron stars are also presented. These results would be important for modelling the observed X-ray spectra of Low Mass X-ray Binaries containing fast spinning neutron stars.
