Time Evolution of the Matter Content of the Expanding Universe in the Framework of Brans-Dicke Gravity

A cosmological model has been constructed in the framework of Brans-Dicke (BD) gravity, based on an inter-conversion between matter and dark energy, for a spatially flat universe in the era of pressureless dust. To account for the non-conservartion of the matter content, a function of time f(t) has been arbitrarily put into the expression of the density of matter. By definition, f(t) is proportional to the matter content of the universe. Using suitable ansazes for scale factor and scalar field, the functional form of f(t) has been determined from the BD field equations. The scale factor has been so chosen that it would cause a signature flip of the deceleration parameter with time. The function f(t) decreases monotonically with time, indicating a transformation of matter into dark energy. Time dependence of the proportions of matter and dark energy of the universe has been determined. The effect of non-conservation of the matter content upon various cosmological parameters has been explored in the present study. Two models of matter-energy interaction have been proposed and f(t) has been expressed as a function of their interaction term. The dark energy equation-of-state (EoS) parameter has been expressed and analyzed in terms of f(t).

Time Evolution of Density Parameters for Matter and Dark Energy and their Interaction Term in Brans-Dicke Gravity

In the framework of Brans-Dicke (BD) theory, the first part of the present study determines the time dependence of BD parameter, energy density and equation of state (EoS) parameter of the cosmic fluid in a universe expanding with acceleration, preceded by a phase of deceleration. For this purpose, a scale factor has been chosen such that the deceleration parameter, obtained from it, shows a signature flip with time. Considering the dark energy to be responsible for the entire pressure, the time evolution of energy parameters for matter and dark energy and the EoS parameter for dark energy have been determined. An effective interaction term, between matter and dark energy, has been proposed and calculated. Its negative value at the present time indicates conversion of matter into dark energy. Using this term, the time dependence of the rates of change of matter and dark energy has been determined. It is found that the nature of dependence of the scalar field upon the scale factor plays a very important role in governing the time evolution of the cosmological quantities studied here. The present study provides us with a simple way to determine the time evolution of dark energy for a homogeneous and isotropic universe of zero spatial curvature, without involving any self-interaction potential or cosmological constant in the formulation.

A Study of the Time Evolution of Brans-Dicke Parameter and its Role in Cosmic Expansion

The dependence of Brans-Dicke (BD) parameter upon the scalar field, for different cosmological era of the expanding universe, has been explored. The time dependence of the scalar field has been determined and thereby the explicit time dependence of the BD parameter has been obtained. Experimental observations regarding the time dependence of the gravitational constant has been considered for this study. The scale factor, Hubble parameter, deceleration parameter, matter density, gravitational constant and the density parameters for matter and dark energy have been expressed in terms of the BD parameter and its time derivatives, showing its role in cosmic expansion.

A Study on the Expanding Universe Based on a Model of the Time Variation of its Matter Content in the Framework of Brans-Dicke Theory

A theoretical model of cosmic expansion has been formulated on an assumption of inter-conversion of matter and dark energy, in the framework of Brans-Dicke theory. An empirical scale factor has been used, which generates a signature flip of the deceleration parameter with time. To account for the non-conservation of matter, a function of time f(t) is incorporated into the equation representing the density of matter. Its value at any instant of time is proportional to the matter content of the universe. The functional form of f(t) has been determined from the field equations by using an empirical scalar field parameter expressed in terms of the scale factor. It is found to decrease with time almost monotonically, implying a conversion of matter into dark energy. Using this function f(t), the time variation of the density of matter has been determined and also the expressions regarding the proportions of matter and dark energy of the universe have been formulated. Time variation of gravitational constant, its fractional rate of change and the Brans-Dicke dimensionless parameter has been analyzed. The dependence of Brans-Dicke parameter upon the scalar field has been determined. The present study enables us to correlate the change of matter content with the change of deceleration parameter and gravitational constant without using any specific mechanism of interaction between matter and scalar field.

A Study of Cosmic Expansion Generated by Non-conservation of Matter in the Framework of Brans-Dicke Theory

The present study, on the expansion of universe, is based on an assumption regarding the possibility of inter-conversion between matter and dark energy, through some interaction of matter with the scalar field in the framework of Brans-Dicke theory. The field equations for a spatially flat space-time have been solved using an empirical dependence of scalar field parameter upon the scale factor. To represent the behaviour regarding the non-conservation of matter, a function, expressed in terms of the Hubble parameter, has been empirically incorporated into the field equations. Their solution shows that, this function, whose value is proportional to the matter content of the universe, decreases monotonically with time. This matter-field interaction generates late time acceleration, causing the deceleration parameter to change its sign from positive to negative. Time dependence of the proportion of dark energy component of the universe has been determined and shown graphically. Time variation of gravitational constant and the Brans-Dicke dimensionless parameter has been analyzed in the present study. The rate of generation of dark energy from matter has been found to affect the time variations of deceleration parameter and gravitational constant.

A Study of Transition of the Expansion of the Universe from a Phase of Deceleration to Acceleration through a Conversion of Matter into Dark Energy in the Framework of Brans-Dicke Theory

The present study is based on a generalized form of Brans-Dicke (BD) theory where, the dimensionless BD parameter is regarded as a function of the scalar field, which is reciprocal of the gravitational constant. The field equations have been solved by incorporating an empirical function f(t) in the expression representing the conservation of matter. This function f(t) has been chosen to account for a conversion of matter (both dark and baryonic) into some other form, possibly dark energy, which is known to be responsible for the accelerated expansion of universe. The requirement of a signature flip of the deceleration parameter (q), which is evident from other studies, sets the boundary conditions to be satisfied by the function f(t), leading to the formulation of its time dependence. A simple empirical relation was initially assumed to represent the time dependence of f(t), and the constants in this expression have been determined from these boundary conditions. The BD parameter has been found to have a negative value throughout the range of study. The dependence of BD parameter upon the scalar field has been depicted graphically. A smooth transition of the universe, from a decelerated to an accelerated phase of expansion, is found to occur due to a conversion of matter into dark energy. The gravitational constant is found to be increasing with time.

A study on the dependence of the dimensionless Brans-Dicke parameter on the scalar field and their time dependence

The present paper reports a study on the dimensionless parameter $ω$ in Brans-Dicke theory. Based on a particular choice of scale factor $a$, we have investigated the signature flip of the deceleration parameter $q$ to see whether the transition from decelerated to accelerated expansion of the universe is achievable under this choice of scale factor. Restrictions on the parameters obtained for this choice of scale factor have been subsequently used for discussing the Brans-Dicke parameter for two choices of scalar fields $ϕ$. Moreover, analytical solutions for the Brans-Dicke parameter without any assumption about the scalar field have been obtained from the modified field equations through the choice of scale factor under consideration. Viable models have been obtained by comparing the results with observations.
