Raman Spectroscopic Investigation of Ferroaxial Order in Na2BaNi(PO4)2 Single Crystals

Ferroaxial order is characterized by the breaking of mirror symmetry parallel to the crystallographic principal axis, which often originates from spontaneous rotational distortions of the crystal lattice. Such rotational distortions are, by symmetry, allowed to couple to specific phonon modes. However, Raman-active phonons associated with these rotational distortions have not yet been clearly identified on a symmetry-consistent basis. Here, we perform polarization-resolved Raman spectroscopy on the ferroaxial phase of Na2BaNi(PO4)2 single crystals and combine the measurements with first-principles lattice-dynamics calculations. This symmetry-guided analysis enables a comprehensive assignment of Raman-active modes in the ferroaxial phase. Several low-frequency Ag modes exhibit finite linewidth broadening, suggesting that these phonons may be weakly affected by the underlying rotational distortion. These results establish a symmetry-based spectroscopic framework for analyzing phonons associated with rotational distortions in ferroaxial materials and provide a basis for future studies of ferroaxial order in complex oxides.

Synthesis, crystal and electronic structures, and second harmonic generation of La 4Ge 3S12

The crystal structure of La 4 Ge 3S 12 has been known to be noncentrosymmetric for almost four decades. This characteristic inversion symmetry breaking suggests the presence of nonlinear optical properties. Yet only recently have nonlinear optical phenomena such as second harmonic generation (SHG) been reported in this material. In this study, we synthesized La4Ge3S12 using the direct reaction method and characterized the composition, crystal structure, and electronic structure using electron probe microanalysis, powder and single-crystal X-ray diffraction, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The experimentally measured electronic structure is in line with that obtained using first-principles calculations. In addition, we observed the nonlinear optical properties of La4Ge3S12 in response to an ultrashort infrared pulsed laser. We found that the intensity of the SHG depends quadratically on the intensity of the incident light, mirroring the intrinsic nature of nonlinear optics.

All-optical helicity-dependent switching in NiCo$_2$O$_4$ thin films

All-optical switching (AOS) involves manipulating magnetization using only pulsed laser, presenting a promising approach for next-generation magnetic recording devices. NiCo2O4 (NCO) thin films, a rare-earth-free ferrimagnetic oxide, exhibit a high Curie temperature and strong perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. This study demonstrates AOS in NCO thin films at room temperature using long-duration laser pulses and high repetition rates. Unlike previous findings, the AOS phenomena we report here are helicity-dependent and observable with an ultrashort pulsed laser. Consequently, two distinct types of AOS can be observed in a single NCO thin film, contingent on the characteristics of the laser pulses and temperature.

Using strain to uncover the interplay between two- and three-dimensional charge density waves in high-temperature superconducting YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{\rm{y}}$

Uniaxial pressure provides an efficient approach to control the competition between charge density waves (CDWs) and superconductivity in underdoped YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{\rm{y}}$. It can enhance the correlation volume of ubiquitous short-range 2D CDW correlations, and induces a long-range 3D CDW otherwise only accessible at large magnetic fields. Here, we use x-ray diffraction to study the strain and doping evolution of these CDWs. No signatures of discommensurations nor pair density waves are observed in the investigated strain-temperature parameter space, but direct evidence for a form of competition between 2D and 3D CDWs is uncovered. We show that the interplay between the 3D CDW, the 2D CDWs and superconductivity is qualitatively well described by including strain effects in simulations of a nonlinear sigma model of competing superconducting and CDW orders. From a broader perspective, our results underscore the potential of strain tuning as a powerful tool for probing and manipulating competing orders in quantum materials.

In-plane Isotropy of the Low Energy Phonon Anomalies in YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{6+x}$

We study the temperature dependence of the low energy phonons in the $(H, 0, L)$ reciprocal plane of the highly ordered ortho-II YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.55}$ cuprate high temperature superconductor by means of high-resolution inelastic x-ray scattering. Anomalies associated with the emergence of long-range charge density wave (CDW) fluctuations are observed, and are qualitatively similar to those previously observed in the $(0, K, L)$ plane. This confirms the unconventional nature of this bi-dimensional CDW, which is not soft-phonon driven. With the support of first principles calculations, the symmetry of the anomalous phonon is identified and is found to match that of the charge modulation. This suggests in turn that these anomalies originate from a direct coupling between the phonons and the collective CDW excitations.

Thermodynamic evidence for nematic superconductivity in Cu$_x$Bi$_2$Se$_3$

Unconventional superconductivity is characterized by the spontaneous symmetry breaking of the macroscopic superconducting wavefunction in addition to the gauge symmetry breaking, such as rotational-symmetry breaking with respect to the underlying crystal-lattice symmetry. Particularly, superconductivity with spontaneous rotational-symmetry breaking in the wavefunction amplitude and thus in bulk properties, not yet reported previously, is intriguing and can be termed "nematic" superconductivity in analogy to nematic liquid-crystal phases. Here, based on specific-heat measurements of the single-crystalline Cu$_x$Bi$_2$Se$_3$ under accurate magnetic-field-direction control, we report thermodynamic evidence for nematic superconductivity, namely, clear two-fold-symmetric behavior in a trigonal lattice. The results indicate realization of an "odd-parity nematic" state, feasible only by macroscopic quantum condensates and distinct from nematic states in liquid crystals. The results also confirm topologically non-trivial superconductivity in Cu$_x$Bi$_2$Se$_3$.
