Machine Translation in the Wild: User Reaction to Xiaohongshu's Built-In Translation Feature

This paper examines user reactions to the launch of the machine translation (MT) feature on Xiaohongshu, a Chinese social media and e-commerce platform, in January 2025. Drawing on a dataset of 6,723 comments collected from 11 official posts promoting the translation function, this paper combines sentiment analysis with thematic analysis to investigate how users perceived and experimented with the function. Results show that reactions were generally positive, although concerns regarding functionality, accessibility, and translation accuracy were also expressed. In addition, users actively tested the function with inputs that are atypical for everyday online communication, including stand-alone words and phrases, abbreviations, internet slang, and symbolic or encoded forms. Successful decoding of these texts elicited positive responses, while testing of more conventional language remained fairly limited. This could lead to uncritical acceptance of MT outputs by users, highlighting the importance of closer collaboration among computer scientists, translation scholars, and platform designers to improve MT performance and promote informed user engagement in real-world scenarios.

Human-Centred Evaluation of Text-to-Image Generation Models for Self-expression of Mental Distress: A Dataset Based on GPT-4o

Effective communication is central to achieving positive healthcare outcomes in mental health contexts, yet international students often face linguistic and cultural barriers that hinder their communication of mental distress. In this study, we evaluate the effectiveness of AI-generated images in supporting self-expression of mental distress. To achieve this, twenty Chinese international students studying at UK universities were invited to describe their personal experiences of mental distress. These descriptions were elaborated using GPT-4o with four persona-based prompt templates rooted in contemporary counselling practice to generate corresponding images. Participants then evaluated the helpfulness of generated images in facilitating the expression of their feelings based on their original descriptions. The resulting dataset comprises 100 textual descriptions of mental distress, 400 generated images, and corresponding human evaluation scores. Findings indicate that prompt design substantially affects perceived helpfulness, with the illustrator persona achieving the highest ratings. This work introduces the first publicly available text-to-image evaluation dataset with human judgment scores in the mental health domain, offering valuable resources for image evaluation, reinforcement learning with human feedback, and multi-modal research on mental health communication.

Prompting ChatGPT for Translation: A Comparative Analysis of Translation Brief and Persona Prompts

Prompt engineering has shown potential for improving translation quality in LLMs. However, the possibility of using translation concepts in prompt design remains largely underexplored. Against this backdrop, the current paper discusses the effectiveness of incorporating the conceptual tool of translation brief and the personas of translator and author into prompt design for translation tasks in ChatGPT. Findings suggest that, although certain elements are constructive in facilitating human-to-human communication for translation tasks, their effectiveness is limited for improving translation quality in ChatGPT. This accentuates the need for explorative research on how translation theorists and practitioners can develop the current set of conceptual tools rooted in the human-to-human communication paradigm for translation purposes in this emerging workflow involving human-machine interaction, and how translation concepts developed in translation studies can inform the training of GPT models for translation tasks.
