Extending Weinberg's EFT: effective scalar-tensor theories up to sixth order

We present a systematic construction of the six-derivative effective scalar-tensor theories, extending the four-derivative framework previously developed by Steven Weinberg. The on-shell effective field theory comprises five parity-even and three parity-odd independent six-derivative scalar-tensor interactions, representing all inequivalent deformations consistent with general covariance. We further confirm this operator counting through an independent analysis using the scattering amplitude formalism in four-dimensional flat spacetime. The six-derivative Lagrangian constructed here provides the next-to-leading-order extension of scalar-tensor gravity, furnishing a robust framework for exploring quantum or stringy corrections, parity-violating interactions, and strong-curvature effects in cosmology, black hole physics and gravitational wave observations.

Loop Blow-up Inflation: An Overview

This proceedings contribution provides an overview of Loop Blow-up Inflation and updates its observational predictions and their comparison with the latest CMB and BAO data. It is based on work originally published in arXiv:2403.04831, done in collaboration with L. Brunelli, M. Cicoli, A. Hebecker, and R. Kuespert, and presented at the 2025 Workshop on Quantum Gravity and Strings. We focus on string loop corrections to the Kähler potential, long regarded as a potential threat to blow-up inflation in the Large Volume Scenario. We argue that these corrections, previously assumed avoidable, are generically present and qualitatively alter the original non-perturbative picture: they invalidate slow-roll near the minimum and instead generate a new slow-roll regime at larger field values, where the scalar potential transitions from an exponential to a power-law plateau. This leads to modified inflationary dynamics and distinct cosmological predictions, including an increased tensor-to-scalar ratio. For the scenario with vanishing extra dark radiation, we compare with the latest combined analyses of ACT, DESI, SPT, BICEP/Keck, and Planck, while for scenarios with non-zero extra dark radiation we use ACT DR6 constraints. Tighter observational bounds on extra dark radiation require updated model parameters in one scenario, yielding revised predictions presented here for the first time. All predictions remain consistent with recent observations, with the ACT+DESI combination yielding near-perfect agreement in the spectral index for vanishing extra dark radiation, with a deviation of $0.03σ$. We also comment on subleading loop corrections, which improve robustness by reducing the field value required for slow roll. These results highlight that string loop effects, rather than being merely detrimental, can play a constructive role in realising viable inflation in string compactifications.

Stückelberg path to pure de Sitter supergravity

We advance the study of pure de Sitter supergravity by introducing a finite formulation of unimodular supergravity via the super-Stückelberg mechanism. Building on previous works, we construct a complete four-dimensional action of spontaneously broken ${\cal N}\!\!=\!\!1$ supergravity to all orders, which allows for de Sitter solutions. The introduction of finite supergravity transformations extends the super-Stückelberg procedure beyond the second order, offering a recursive solution to all orders in the goldstino sector. This work bridges the earlier perturbative approaches and the complete finite theory, opening new possibilities for de Sitter vacua in supergravity models and eventually string theory.

Loop Blow-up Inflation

We present a new model of string inflation driven by a blow-up Kähler modulus of type IIb compactifications with a potential generated by string loops. Slow-roll is naturally realized thanks to the fact that the blow-up mode is a leading-order flat direction lifted by string loops which are unavoidable and generate a plateau at large field values. We check that throughout the whole inflationary dynamics the effective field theory is under control. We perform a phenomenological analysis determining the exact number of efoldings by studying the post-inflationary evolution. We determine the values of the microscopic parameters which lead to agreement with CMB data, together with the prediction of a tensor-to-scalar ratio of order $r\sim 10^{-5}$.

Manifestly Covariant Polynomial M5-brane Lagrangians

We present polynomial and manifestly covariant M5-brane Lagrangians along with their analyses involving their dynamics, gauge symmetries and their nonlinear selfduality condition. Such Lagrangians can be particularly useful for developments that are otherwise hindered by a non-polynomial structure and singularity of the Lagrangian such as its quantisation. Although on integrating out some of the auxiliary fields these polynomial Lagrangians reduce to the M5-brane Lagrangian given by the Pasti-Sorokin-Tonin (PST) formalism, in the analysis of the polynomial Lagrangians the only remnant of the non-polynomial structure of the PST type Lagrangian appears in the gauge transformation corresponding to an infinitesimal shift of a Stückelberg field. This transformation does not affect the dynamics or the on-shell self-duality condition of the polynomial M5-brane Lagrangians.
