Kilometre-scale Jovian moon characterized for a potential JUICE flyby

Jupiter's irregular satellites are thought to be relics of early Solar System planetesimals. However, their small sizes, large distances from Earth and close angular proximity to Jupiter make them difficult to characterize remotely. Here we report multi-instrument observations of kilometre-sized Kallichore, the only irregular moon of Jupiter amenable to a close flyby by ESA's Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer (JUICE), whose astrometric and physical properties were still poorly constrained. We used Hubble photometry and astrometry, followed by a ground-based, multi-site stellar occultation campaign and astrometric and photometric observations with the 10.4-m Gran Telescopio Canarias. We reduced Kallichore's orbital uncertainty by up to approximately 80% and determined its shape: an elongated object with a minimum semi-axis ratio of a/b = 1.53 +/- 0.10, an area-equivalent diameter of 3.8 (+2.3/-0.3) km and a dark surface with a geometric albedo of 3.7% (+0.7/-2.2). No close companions were detected. These new constraints provide a viable pathway towards a JUICE flyby once the spacecraft arrives in the Jupiter system in 2031.

Size, shape, density, and atmospheric limit of (50000) Quaoar revealed from 14 years of stellar occultation

We present results from 28 stellar occultations by the large Trans-Neptunian Object (50000) Quaoar registered between 2018 and 2025. By performing a joint analysis of this occultation data-set, along with other 9 published events, we were able to fit an oblate ellipsoid shape, with equatorial semi-axes, a and b of 566.1+2.5-2.2 km, and a polar semi-axis, c, of 511.2+3.6-3.7 km. It provides an equivalent volumetric diameter of 1094.4 +/- 4.6 km and polar oblateness of 0.097 +/- 0.011. Considering an absolute magnitude of H = 2.79 +/- 0.35, we derive a geometric albedo of pV = 0.125 +/- 0.038. We have derived new upper limits to the surface pressure of a CH4 atmosphere of 0.15 nbar (1-sigma) and 0.65 nbar (3-sigma). We also provide a table with the 36 new astrometric positions for Quaoar. Using the new system mass derived from Weywot's orbit around Quaoar, we calculated a density of 1.760 +/- 0.109 g/cm3. Moreover, from the derived size and rotation period (8.8394 +/- 0.0002 hours (Ortiz et al. 2003)), we calculate that, if Quaoar is in Maclaurin hydrostatic equilibrium state, it would have a density of 1.859 +/- 0.200 g/cm3. This result, within the error bars, is compatible with the value we found. Therefore, this work shows that Quaoar can be a Maclaurin object, being eligible as a dwarf planet.

Structural Analysis of Brightest Cluster Galaxies in Poor and Rich Clusters

Studying structural parameters of brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs) provides important clues to understand their formation and evolution. We present the results of the surface brightness profile fitting of 1685 brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs) drawn from the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope Legacy Survey in the redshift range of $0.1 < z < 1.0$. We fit $r$-band images of BCGs with a single Sérsic profile. The sample is splitted into two groups based on the host cluster richness to investigate the impact of the environment. Our results suggest that BCGs in rich clusters are statistically larger than their counterparts in poor clusters. We provide best-fit linear regressions for the Kormendy, the $log \ R_e - log \ n$, and the size-luminosity relations. In addition, we examined the evolution of the structural parameters, however the BCGs in our sample do not show a significant size change since z$\sim$1.

Identification and Properties of Isolated Field Elliptical Galaxies from CFHTLS-W1

We present a catalogue of isolated field elliptical (IfE) galaxies drawn from the W1 field of the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope Legacy Survey (CFHTLS). 228 IfEs were identified from a flux-limited (r<21.8) galaxy catalogue which corresponds to a density of 3 IfE/sq.deg. For comparison we consider a sample of elliptical galaxies living in dense environments, based on identification of the brightest cluster galaxies (BGCs) in the same survey. Using the same dataset for the comparison sample ensures a uniform selection, including in the redshift range as IfEs (i.e. 0.1 < z < 0.9). A comparison of elliptical galaxies in different environments reveals that IfEs and BCGs have similar behaviours in their colours, star formation activities, and scaling relations of mass-size and size-luminosity. IfEs and BCGs have similar slopes in the scaling relations with respect to cluster ellipticals within the $-24 \leq M_{r} \leq -22$ magnitude and $10.2< \textrm{log}( \textrm M_{*}/ \textrm M_\odot)\leq12.0$ mass ranges. Three IfEs identified in this study can be associated with fossil groups found in the same survey area which gives clues for future studies.
