Heterogeneous Dynamical Relaxations in a Lane Forming Liquid

The connection between domain relaxations at individual scales and the collective heterogeneous response in non-equilibrium systems is a topic of profound interest in recent times. In a model sys- tem of constantly driven oppositely charged binary colloidal suspension, we probe such relaxations as the elongated lanes of likely charges interact with increasing field in the orthogonal plane using Brownian Dynamics simulations. We show that the system undergoes a structural and dynamical cross-over: from an initial fast-relaxing homogeneous phase to a heterogeneous lane phase following a slow relaxation via an intermediate phase with mixed relaxation. Our observations also affirm the coexistence of multiple time and length scales in this phase. Unlike glasses, these time and length scales are not separated by orders of magnitude, they are comparable in magnitudes. Using a phenomenological model, we, further, reinforce that these competing relaxations are a manifesta- tion of heterogeneity in diffusion which is rather generic in systems with such competing relaxations.

Anomalous Dynamical Responses in a Driven System

The interplay between structure and dynamics in non-equilibrium steady-state is far from understood. We address this interplay by tracking Brownian Dynamics trajectories of particles in a binary colloid of opposite charges in an external electric field, undergoing cross-over from homogeneous to lane state, a prototype of heterogeneous structure formation in non-equilibrium systems. We show that the length scale of structural correlations controls heterogeneity in diffusion and consequent anomalous dynamic responses, like the exponential tail in probability distributions of particle displacements and stretched exponential structural relaxation. We generalise our observations using equations for steady state density which may aid to understand microscopic basis of heterogeneous diffusion in condensed matter systems.

Analytical Form of Forces in Hydrophobic Collapse

We calculate analytically the forces between two solvophobic solutes, considering a model system. We show that the effective interaction forces between two solvophobic solutes, mediated by the solvent, is attractive for short ranges, which decreases linearly with surface-to-surface separation s between the solutes and repulsive in the long range falling off as 1 / s 4 . The attraction originates from the unbalanced Laplace force at the liquid-gas interface, generated by the repulsive interaction with the solvent particles, around the solutes at small s. The long range part arises due to unbalanced osmotic pressure. We illustrate the calculations for the Lennard-Jones solvent. We discuss the general implication of our results in the context of hydrophobic collapse.

Broadening of Spectral Lines due to Dynamic Multiple Scattering and the Tully-Fisher Relation

The frequency shift of spectral lines is most often explained by the Doppler Effect in terms of relative motion, whereas the Doppler broadening of a particular line mainly depends on the absolute temperature. The Wolf effect on the other hand deals with the correlation induced spectral change and explains both the broadening and shift of the spectral lines. In this framework a relation between the width of the spectral line is related to the redshift z for the line and hence with the distance. For smaller values of z a relation similar to the Tully-Fisher relation can be obtained and for larger values of z a more general relation can be constructed. The derivation of this kind of relation based on dynamic multiple scattering theory may play a significant role in explaining the overall spectra of quasi stellar objects. We emphasize that this mechanism is not applicable for nearby galaxies, $z \leq 1$.
