Dissipative Dynamics of a Single Polymer in Solution: A Lowe-Andersen Approach

We study the equilibrium dynamics of a single polymer chain under good solvent condition. Special emphasis is laid on varying the drag force experienced by the chain while it moves. To this end we model the solvent in a mesoscopic manner by employing the Lowe-Andersen approach of dissipative particle dynamics which is known to reproduce hydrodynamic effects. Our approach captures the correct static behavior in equilibrium. Regarding the dynamics, we investigate the scaling of the self-diffusion coefficient $D$ with respect to the length of the polymer $N$, yielding results that are compatible with the Zimm scaling $D \sim N^{-3/5}$.

Scaling laws during collapse of a homopolymer: Lattice versus off-lattice

We present comparative results from simulations of a lattice and an off-lattice model of a homopolymer, in the context of kinetics of the collapse transition. Scaling laws related to the collapse time, cluster coarsening and aging behavior are compared. Although in both models the cluster growth is independent of temperature, the related exponents turn out to be different. Conversely, the aging and associated scaling properties are found to be universal, with the nonequilibrium autocorrelation exponent obeying a recently derived bound.

Coarsening and Aging of Lattice Polymers: Influence of Bond Fluctuations

We present results for the nonequilibrium dynamics of collapse for a model flexible homopolymer on simple cubic lattices with fixed and fluctuating bonds between the monomers. Results from our Monte Carlo simulations show that, phenomenologically, the sequence of events observed during the collapse are independent of the bond criterion. While the growth of the clusters (of monomers) at different temperatures exhibits a nonuniversal power-law behavior when the bonds are fixed, the introduction of fluctuations in the bonds by considering the existence of diagonal bonds produces a temperature independent growth, which can be described by a universal nonequilibrium finite-size scaling function with a non-universal metric factor. We also examine the related aging phenomenon, probed by a suitable two-time density-density autocorrelation function showing a simple power-law scaling with respect to the growing cluster size. Unlike the cluster-growth exponent $α_c $, the nonequilibrium autocorrelation exponent $λ_C$ governing the aging during the collapse, however, is independent of the bond type and strictly follows the bounds proposed by two of us in Phys. Rev. E 93, 032506 (2016) at all temperatures.

Dimensionality Dependence of Aging in Kinetics of Diffusive Phase Separation: Behavior of order-parameter autocorrelation

Behavior of two-time autocorrelation during the phase separation in solid binary mixtures are studied via numerical solutions of the Cahn-Hilliard equation as well as Monte Carlo simulations of the Ising model. Results are analyzed via state-of-the-art methods, including the finite-size scaling technique. Full forms of the autocorrelation in space dimensions $2$ and $3$ are obtained empirically. The long time behavior are found to be power-law type, with exponents unexpectedly higher than the ones for the ferromagnetic ordering. Both Chan-Hilliard and Ising models provide results consistent with each other.

Finite-Size Effects in Dynamics: Critical vs Coarsening Phenomena

Finite-size effects in systems with diverging characteristic lengthscale have been addressed via state-of-the-art Monte Carlo and molecular dynamics simulations of various models exhibiting solid-solid, liquid-liquid and vapor-liquid transitions. Our simulations, combined with the appropriate application of finite-size scaling theory, confirm various non-trivial singularities in equilibrium dynamic critical phenomena and non-equilibrium domain coarsening phenomena, as predicted by analytical theories. We convincingly demonstrate that the finite-size effects in the domain growth problems, with conserved order parameter dynamics, is weak and universal, irrespective of the transport mechanism. This result is strikingly different from the corresponding effects in critical dynamics. In critical phenomena, difference in finite-size effects between statics and dynamics is also discussed.

Temperature and Composition Dependence of Kinetics of Phase Separation in Solid Binary Mixtures

We present results for the kinetics of phase separation in solid binary mixtures ($A_1+A_2$) from Monte Carlo simulations of the Ising model in two dimensions. The simulation results are understood via appropriate application of the finite-size scaling theory. At moderately high temperatures, for symmetric $(50:50)$ compositions of $A_1$ and $A_2$ particles the average size of the domains exhibit power-law growth with the exponent having the Lifshitz-Slyozov value of 1/3 from very early time. However, our analysis shows that for low enough temperatures, the growth exponent at early time is smaller than the Lifshitz-Slyozov value. For composition dependence, we find that at moderate temperature, even for extreme off-critical composition, curvature dependent correction to the growth law is weak which is counterintuitive in this case that gives rise to droplet morphology. This is however consistent with the recent understanding on curvature dependence of surface tension. Results from rather general studies on the finite-size effects with the variations of temperature and composition have also been presented.

Effects of Density Conservation and Hydrodynamics on Aging in Nonequilibrium Processes

Aging in kinetics of three different phase transitions, viz., magnetic, binary solid and single component fluid, have been studied via Monte Carlo and molecular dynamics simulations in three space dimensions with the objective of identifying the effects of order-parameter conservation and hydrodynamics. We observe that the relevant autocorrelations exhibit power-law decay in ferromagnet and binary solid but with different exponents. At early time fluid autocorrelation function nicely follows that of binary solid, the order parameter being conserved for both of them, as opposed to a ferromagnet. At late time the fluid data crosses over to an exponential decay which we identify as a hydrodynamic effect and provide analytical justification for this behavior.

Universality in Fluid Domain Coarsening: The case of vapor-liquid transition

Domain growth during the kinetics of phase separation is studied following vapor-liquid transition in a single component Lennard-Jones fluid. Results are analyzed after appropriately mapping the continuum snapshots obtained from extensive molecular dynamics simulations to a simple cubic lattice. For near critical quench interconnected domain morphology is observed. A brief period of slow diffusive growth is followed by a linear viscous hydrodynamic growth that lasts for an extended period of time. This result is in contradiction with earlier inclusive reports of late time growth exponent 1/2 that questions the uniqueness of the non-equilibrium universality for liquid-liquid and vapor-liquid transitions.

Diffusive Domain Coarsening : Early Time Dynamics and Finite-Size Effects

We study diffusive dynamics of phase separation in a binary mixture, following critical quench, both in spatial dimensions $d=2$ and $d=3$. Particular focus in this work is to obtain information about effects of system size and correction to the growth law via appropriate application of finite-size scaling method to the results obtained from Kawasaki exchange Monte Carlo simulation of Ising model. Observations of only weak size effects and very small correction to scaling in the growth law are significant. The methods used in this work and information thus gathered will be of paramount importance in the study of kinetics of phase separation in fluids and other problems of growing length scale. We also provide detailed discussion on standard methods of understanding simulation results which may lead to inappropriate conclusions.

Domain Coarsening in 2-d Ising Model: Finite-Size Scaling for Conserved Dynamics

We quantify the effect of system size in the kinetics of domain growth in Ising model with 50:50 composition in two spatial dimensions. Our estimate of the exponent, $α=0.334\pm0.004$, for the power law growth of linear domain size, from Monte Carlo simulation using small systems of linear dimensions L=16, 32, 64, and 128, is in excellent agreement with the prediction of Lifshitz-Slyozov (LS) theory, $α=1/3$. We find that the LS exponent sets in very early and continues to be true until average size of domains reaches three quarters of equilibrium limit.
