Microscopic origin of Einstein's field equations and the raison d'être for a positive cosmological constant

In the paradigm of effective field theory, one hierarchically obtains the effective action $\mathcal{A}_{\rm eff}[q, \cdots]$ for some low(er) energy degrees of freedom $q$, by integrating out the high(er) energy degrees of freedom $ξ$, in a path integral, based on an action $\mathcal{A}[q,ξ, \cdots]$. We show how one can integrate out a vector field $v^a$ in an action $\mathcal{A}[Γ,v,\cdots ]$ and obtain an effective action $\mathcal{A}_{\rm eff}[Γ, \cdots]$ which, on variation with respect to the connection $Γ$, leads to the Einstein's field equations and a metric compatible with the connection. The derivation \textit{predicts} a non-zero, positive, \cc, which arises as an integration constant. The Euclidean action $\mathcal{A}[Γ,v, \cdots]$, has an interpretation as the heat density of null surfaces, when translated into the Lorentzian spacetime. The vector field $v^a$ can be interpreted as the Euclidean analogue of the microscopic degrees of freedom hosted by any null surface. Several implications of this approach are discussed.

Tidal heating of black holes and exotic compact objects on the brane

During the early phase of in-spiral of a binary system, the tidal heating of a compact object due to its companion plays a significant role in the determination of the orbital evolution of the binary. The phenomenon depends crucially on the `hairs', as well as on the nature of the compact object. It turns out that the presence of extra dimension affects both these properties, by incorporating an extra tidal charge for braneworld black holes and also by introducing quantum effects, leading to possible existence of exotic compact objects. It turns out that the phasing information from tidal heating in the gravitational wave waveform can constrain the tidal charge inherited from extra dimension to a value $\sim 10^{-6}$, the most stringent constraint, to date. Moreover, second order effects in tidal heating for exotic compact objects, also reveals an oscillatory behaviour with respect to spin, which has unique signatures.

Bound on photon circular orbits in general relativity and beyond

Existence of a photon circular orbit can tell us a lot about the nature of the underlying spacetime, since it plays a pivotal role in the understanding of the characteristic signatures of compact objects, namely the quasi-normal modes and shadow radius. For this purpose, determination of the location of the photon circular orbit is of utmost importance. In this work, we derive bounds on the location of the photon circular orbit around compact objects within the purview of general relativity and beyond. As we have explicitly demonstrated, contrary to the earlier results in the context of general relativity, the bound on the location of the photon circular orbit is not necessarily an upper bound, rather depending on the matter content it is possible to arrive at a lower bound as well. This have interesting implications for the quasi-normal modes and shadow radius, the two key observables related to the strong field tests of gravity. Besides discussing the bound for higher dimensional general relativity, we have also considered how the bound on the photon circular orbits gets modified in the braneworld scenario, for pure Lovelock and general Lovelock theories of gravity. Implications of these results for compact objects have also been discussed.

Looking for extra dimensions in the observed quasi-periodic oscillations of black holes

Quasi-periodic oscillations, often present in the power density spectrum of accretion disk around black holes, are useful probes for the understanding of gravitational interaction in the near-horizon regime of black holes. Since the presence of an extra spatial dimension modifies the near horizon geometry of black holes, it is expected that the study of these quasi-periodic oscillations may shed some light on the possible existence of these extra dimensions. Intriguingly, most of the extra dimensional models, which are of significant interest to the scientific community, predicts the existence of a tidal charge parameter in black hole spacetimes. This tidal charge parameter can have an overall negative sign and is a distinctive signature of the extra dimensions. Motivated by this, we have studied the quasi-periodic oscillations for a rotating braneworld black hole using the available theoretical models. Subsequently, we have used the observations of the quasi-periodic oscillations from available black hole sources, e.g., GRO J1655 -- 40, XTE J1550 -- 564, GRS 1915 + 105, H 1743 + 322 and Sgr A* and have compared them with the predictions from the relevant theoretical models, in order to estimate the tidal charge parameter. It turns out that among the 11 theoretical models considered here, 8 of them predict a negative value for the tidal charge parameter, while for the others negative values of the tidal charge parameter are also well within the 1-$σ$ confidence interval.

Gravitational multipole moments for asymptotically de Sitter spacetimes

We provide a prescription to compute the gravitational multipole moments of compact objects for asymptotically de Sitter spacetimes. Our prescription builds upon a recent definition of the gravitational multipole moments in terms of Noether charges associated to specific vector fields, within the residual harmonic gauge, dubbed multipole symmetries. We first derive the multipole symmetries for spacetimes which are asymptotically de Sitter; we also show that these symmetry vector fields eliminate the non-propagating degrees of freedom from the linearized gravitational wave equation in a suitable gauge. We then apply our prescription to the Kerr-de Sitter black hole and compute its multipole structure. Our result recovers the Geroch-Hansen moments of the Kerr black hole in the limit of vanishing cosmological constant.

No-boundary Wave Function, Wheeler-DeWitt Equation and Path Integral Analysis of the Bouncing `Quantum' Cosmology

Bouncing models are alternatives to inflationary cosmology that replace the initial Big-Bang singularity by a `bouncing' phase. A deeper understanding of the initial conditions of the universe, in these scenarios, requires knowledge of quantum aspects of bouncing models. In this work, we propose two classes of bouncing models that can be studied with great analytical ease and hence, provide test-bed for investigating more profound problems in quantum cosmology of bouncing universes. Our model's two key ingredients enable us to do straightforward analytical calculations: (i) a convenient parametrization of the minisuperspace of FRLW spacetimes and (ii) two distinct choices of the effective perfect fluids that source the background geometry of the bouncing universe. We study the quantum cosmology of these models using both the Wheeler-de Witt equations and the path integral approach. In particular, we found a bouncing model analogue of the no-boundary wavefunction and presented a Lorentzian path integral representation for the same. We also discuss the introduction of real scalar perturbations.

Ergoregion instability and echoes for braneworld black holes: Scalar, electromagnetic and gravitational perturbations

In the context of higher dimensional braneworld scenario, we have argued that the occurrence of horizonless exotic compact objects, as an alternative to classical black holes, are more natural. These exotic compact objects carry a distinctive signature of the higher dimension, namely a tidal charge parameter, inherited from the projection of the higher dimensional Weyl tensor onto the four dimensional spacetime we live in. Due to the absence of any horizon, rotating exotic compact objects are often unstable because of superradiance. Interestingly, these higher dimensional exotic compact objects, in the presence of the tidal charge, are more stable than their four dimensional counterpart. A similar inference is drawn by analysing the static modes associated with these exotic compact objects, irrespective of the nature of the perturbation i.e., it holds true for scalar, electromagnetic and also gravitational perturbation. The post-merger ringdown phase of the exotic compact object in the braneworld scenario, which can be described in terms of the quasi-normal modes, holds plethora of information regarding the nature of the higher dimension. In this connection we have discussed the analytical computation of the quasi-normal modes as well as their numerical estimation for perturbations of arbitrary spin, depicting existence of echoes in the ringdown waveform. As we have demonstrated, the echoes in the ringdown waveform depends explicitly on the tidal charge parameter and hence its future detection can provide constraints on the tidal charge parameter, which in turn will enable us to provide a possible bound on the length of the extra dimension.

Perturbations of the almost Killing equation and their implications

Killing vectors play a crucial role in characterizing the symmetries of a given spacetime. However, realistic astrophysical systems are in most cases only approximately symmetric. Even in the case of an astrophysical black hole, one might expect Killing symmetries to exist only in an approximate sense due to perturbations from external matter fields. In this work, we consider the generalized notion of Killing vectors provided by the almost Killing equation, and study the perturbations induced by a perturbation of a background spacetime satisfying exact Killing symmetry. To first order, we demonstrate that for nonradiative metric perturbations (that is, metric perturbations with nonvanishing trace) of symmetric vacuum spacetimes, the perturbed almost Killing equation avoids the problem of an unbounded Hamiltonian for hyperbolic parameter choices. For traceless metric perturbations, we obtain similar results for the second-order perturbation of the almost Killing equation, with some additional caveats. Thermodynamical implications are also explored.

Multipole moments of compact objects with NUT charge: Theoretical and observational implications

We derive the multipole moments of the Kerr-NUT black hole spacetime using the Geroch-Hansen formalism, even though the spacetime is not asymptotically flat. Intriguingly, in the presence of the NUT charge, the absence of reflection symmetry about the equatorial plane, leads to mass and spin multipole moments of all orders, in stark contrast to Kerr-like spacetimes. This leads to a drastic departure of the multipolar structure of a compact object with NUT charge, whose implications for gravitational wave observations have been explored. Our analysis of multipole moments for the Kerr-NUT spacetime is also in tune with the Thorne's approach.

Eddington gravity with matter: An emergent perspective

We describe an action principle, within the framework of the Eddington gravity, which incorporates the matter fields in a simple manner. Interestingly, the gravitational field equations derived from this action is identical to the Einstein's equations, in contrast with the earlier attempts in the literature. The cosmological constant arises as an integration constant in this approach. In fact, the derivation of the field equations demands the existence of a non-zero cosmological constant, thereby providing the raison d'être for a non-zero cosmological constant, implied by the current observations. Several features of our approach strongly support the paradigm that gravity is an emergent phenomenon and, in this perspective, our action principle could have a possible origin in the microstructure of the spacetime. We also discuss several extensions of the action principle, including the one which can incorporate torsion in the spacetime. We also show that an Eddington-like action can be constructed to obtain the field equations of the Lanczos-Lovelock gravity.

Strong cosmic censorship conjecture with NUT charge and conformal coupling

Strong cosmic censorship conjecture is central to the deterministic nature of general relativity, since it asserts that given any generic initial data on a spacelike hypersurface, the future can be uniquely predicted. However, recently it has been found that for charged black holes in asymptotically de Sitter spacetimes, the metric and massless scalar fields can be extended beyond the Cauchy horizon. This spells doom on the strong cosmic censorship conjecture, which prohibits precisely this scenario. In this work we try to understand the genericness of the above situation by studying the effect of NUT charge and conformally coupled scalar field on the violation of strong cosmic censorship conjecture for charged asymptotically de Sitter black holes. We have shown that even in the presence of the NUT charge and a conformally coupled scalar field strong cosmic censorship conjecture in indeed violated for such black holes with Cauchy horizon. Moreover, the presence of conformal coupling makes the situation even worse, in the sense that the scalar field is extendible across the Cauchy horizon as a $C^{1}$ function. On the other hand, the strong cosmic censorship conjecture is respected for conformally coupled scalar field in rotating black hole spacetimes with NUT charge. This reinforces the belief that possibly for astrophysical black holes, strong cosmic censorship conjecture is respected, irrespective of the nature of the scalar field.

Softly broken conformal symmetry with higher curvature terms

In a scalar-coupled-gravity model, the quadratically divergent counter term appearing in the mass renormalization of the scalar fields must inherit corrections arising out of gravitational interactions. In this work we have explicitly demonstrated that there are no such corrections of gravitational origin to the quadratic divergences in the mass counter terms. This statement holds true irrespective of the nature of the gravitational interaction, i.e., whether gravity is described by general relativity or f(R) theory. Interestingly, it also turns out that the one loop effective action of scalar-coupled-gravity system will be well-behaved \emph{if and only if} the $f(R)$ theory is free from ghosts. In particular, the results derived in the context of f(R) theory are shown to be in exact agreement with the corresponding results derived from the equivalent scalar-tensor representation. Our analysis suggests the tantalizing possibility that the masses of the scalar fields can be consistently kept smaller than some Ultra Violet (UV) cutoff scale and is independent of the nature of the gravity theory, which may involve higher curvature corrections. All these will be true provided the matter fields and the gravity theory can be embedded consistently into a UV complete theory at the Planck scale.

First law of black hole mechanics with fermions

In the last few years, there has been significant interest in understanding the stationary comparison version of the first law of black hole mechanics in the vielbein formulation of gravity. Several authors have pointed out that to discuss the first law in the vielbein formulation one must extend the Iyer-Wald Noether charge formalism appropriately. Jacobson and Mohd [arXiv:1507.01054] and Prabhu [arXiv:1511.00388] formulated such a generalisation for symmetry under combined spacetime diffeomorphisms and local Lorentz transformations. In this paper, we apply and appropriately adapt their formalism to four-dimensional gravity coupled to a Majorana field and to a Rarita-Schwinger field. We explore the first law of black hole mechanics and the construction of the Lorentz-diffeomorphism Noether charges in the presence of fermionic fields, relevant for simple supergravity.

Limits on stellar structures in Lovelock theories of gravity

We study the bound on the compactness of a stellar object in pure Lovelock theories of arbitrary order in arbitrary spacetime dimensions, involving electromagnetic field. The bound we derive for a generic pure Lovelock theory, reproduces the known results in four dimensional Einstein gravity. Both the case of a charged shell and that of a charge sphere demonstrates that for a given spacetime dimension, stars in general relativity are more compact than the stars in pure Lovelock theories. In addition, as the strength of the Maxwell field increases, the stellar structures become more compact, i.e., the radius of the star decreases. In the context of four dimensional Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity as well, an increase in the strength of the Gauss-Bonnet coupling (behaving as an effective electric charge), increases the compactness of the star. Implications are discussed.

Echoes from the braneworld black holes

The holographic interpretation of the Randall-Sundrum model based on the adaptation of the AdS/CFT correspondence to the braneworld scenario states that the black holes localized on the brane are {\it quantum corrected}. This can be better understood from the fact that the classical $AdS_{5}$ bulk dynamics is dual to gravity coupled with CFT on the four dimensional brane. Based on the back reaction of the CFT on the classical black hole geometry, localized on the brane, it is expected that there exist possible near horizon modifications. This may result in the black hole horizon becoming partially reflective, thus giving rise to echoes in the ringdown signal in gravitational wave observations. In this paper, we investigate the existence of such echoes in the ringdown phase of a black hole localized on the brane, carrying a \emph{negative} tidal charge, and establish the layout for future investigation of higher dimensional effects in the ringdown signal. Confirmed detections of echoes at the current levels of instrumental sensitivity can constrain the dimensionless value of tidal charge to $|Q| \lesssim M^2$ .

Constraining extra-spatial dimensions with observations of GW170817

We derive the modifications introduced by extra-spatial dimensions beyond the four dimensional spacetime on the macroscopic properties of neutron stars, which in turn affect the gravitational wave spectrum of their binaries. It turns out that the mass-radius relation of the neutron stars, and their tidal deformability, are affected non-trivially by the presence of extra dimensions, and can be used to constrain parameters associated with those dimensions. Implications for I-Love-Q universality relations are also discussed and utilized to obtain a constraint on one such parameter. Importantly, we show, for the first time, that measurements of the component masses and tidal deformabilities of the binary neutron star system GW170817, constrain the brane tension in the single brane-world model of Randall and Sundrum to be greater than $35.1~\textrm{GeV}^{4}$. This work opens up the possibility of making such a constraint more robust by improving the modelling of binaries on the brane in the future.

Strong Cosmic Censorship in higher curvature gravity

Deterministic nature of general relativity is ensured by the strong cosmic censorship conjecture, which asserts that spacetime cannot be extended beyond Cauchy horizon with square integrable connection. Although this conjecture holds true for asymptotically flat black hole spacetimes in general relativity, a potential violation of this conjecture occurs in charged asymptotically de Sitter spacetimes. Since it is expected that Einstein-Hilbert action will involve higher curvature corrections, in this article we have studied whether one can restore faith in the strong cosmic censorship when higher curvature corrections to general relativity are considered. Contrary to our expectations, we have explicitly demonstrated that not only a violation to the conjecture occurs near extremality, but the violation appears to become stronger as the strength of the higher curvature term increases.
