Dissipate locally, couple globally: a sharp transition from decoupling to infinite range coupling in Josephson arrays with on-site dissipation

We study the T=0 normal to superconducting transition of Josephson arrays with {\it on-site} dissipation. A perturbative renormalization group solution is given. Like the previously studied case of {\it bond} dissipation (BD), this is a "floating" to coupled (FC) phase transition. {\it Unlike} the BD transition, at which {\it only} nearest-neighbor couplings become relevant, here {\it all} inter-grain couplings, out to {\it infinitely} large distances, do so simultaneously. We predict, for the first time in an FC transition, a diverging spatial correlation length. Our results show the robustness of floating phases in dissipative quantum systems.

Proposal to stabilize and detect half-quantum vortices in strontium ruthenate thin films: Non-Abelian braiding statistics of vortex matter in a ${p_x}+i{p_y}$ superconductor

We propose a simple way to stabilize half-quantum vortices in superconducting strontium ruthenate, assuming the order parameter is of chiral $p_x + ip_y$ symmetry, as is suggested by recent experiments. The method, first given by Salomaa and Volovik in the context of Helium-3, is very naturally suited for strontium ruthenate, which has a layered, quasi-two-dimensional, perovskite crystal structure. We propose possible experiments to detect their non abelian-braiding statistics. These experiments are of potential importance for topological quantum computation.

The nature and boundary of the floating phase in a dissipative Josephson junction array

We study the nature of correlations within, and the transition into, the floating phase of dissipative Josephson junction arrays. Order parameter correlations in this phase are long-ranged in time, but only short-ranged in space. A perturbative RG analysis shows that, in {\it arbitrary} spatial dimension, the transition is controlled by a continuous locus of critical fixed points determined entirely by the \textit{local} topology of the lattice. This may be the most natural example of a line of critical points existing in arbitrary dimensions.

Floating phase in a dissipative Josephson junction array

We consider dissipative quantum phase transitions in Josephson junction arrays and show that the disordered phase in this extended system can be viewed as an unusual floating phase in which the states of local $(0+1)$-dimensional elements (single Josephson junctions) can slide past each other despite arbitrary range spatial couplings among them. The unusual character of the metal-superconductor quantum critical point can be tested by measurements of the current voltage characteristic. This may be the simplest and most natural example of a floating phase.

Infrared Hall angle in the $d$-density wave state: a comparison of theory and experiment

Infrared Hall measurements in the pseudogap phase of the high-$T_c$ cuprates are addressed within the framework of the ordered $d$-density wave state. The zero-temperature Hall frequency $ω_H$ is computed as a function of the hole-doping $x$. Our results are consistent with recent experiments in absolute units. We also discuss the signature of the quantum critical point in the Hall frequency at a critical doping inside the superconducting dome, which can be tested in future experiments.

Softer than normal, but not as soft as one might think: Spontaneous flux lattices in ferromagnetic spin-triplet superconductors

A theory is developed for the spontaneous vortex lattice that is expected to occur in the ferromagnetic superconductors ZrZn_2, UGe_2, and URhGe, where the superconductivity is likely of spin-triplet nature. The long-wavelength fluctuations of this spontaneous flux lattice are predicted to be huge compared to those of a conventional flux lattice, and to be the same as those for spin-singlet ferromagnetic superconductors. It is shown that these fluctuations lead to unambiguous experimental signatures which may provide the easiest way to observe the spontaneous flux lattice.

Angle-resolved photoemission spectra in the cuprates from the d-density wave theory

Angle-resolved photoemission spectra present two challenges for the d-density wave (DDW) theory of the pseudogap state of the cuprates: (1) hole pockets near $(π/2,π/2)$ are not observed, in apparent contradiction with the assumption of translational symmetry breaking, and (2) there are no well-defined quasiparticles at the {\it antinodal} points, in contradiction with the predictions of mean-field theory of this broken symmetry state. Here, we show how these puzzles can be resolved.

Crossover and scaling in a two-dimensional field-tuned superconductor

Using an analysis similar to that of Imry and Wortis, it is shown that the apparent first order superconductor to metal transition, which has been claimed to exist at low values of the magnetic field in a two-dimensional field-tuned system at zero temperature, can be consistentlyinterpreted as a sharp crossover from a strong superconductor to an inhomogeneous state, which is a weak superconductor. The true zero-temperature superconductor to insulator transition within the inhomogenous state is conjectured to be that of randomly diluted XY model. An explaination of the observed finite temperature approximate scaling of resistivity close to the critical point is speculated within this model.

Collective modes in the d-density wave state of the cuprates

Using a functional integral formulation, we analyze the collective modes in the $d$-density wave state. Since only discrete symmetries are broken, no massless phase mode is present. The only relevant fluctuation is the amplitude fluctuation of the order parameter, which is treated at the gaussian level above the long range order. These fluctuations give rise to a massive mode, the analog of the U(1) Higgs, or amplitude mode at wave-vector $(π,π)$. Neutrons in inelastic neutron scattering experiments couple to this mode via the orbital currents and are likely to produce direct measurements of this amplitude boson.

Sharp signature of DDW quantum critical point in the Hall coefficient of the cuprates

We study the behavior of the Hall coefficient, $R_H$, in a system exhibiting $d_{{x^2}-{y^2}}$ density-wave (DDW) order in a regime in which the carrier concentration, $x$, is tuned to approach a quantum critical point at which the order is destroyed. At the mean-field level, we find that $n_{\rm Hall}=1/R_H$ evinces a sharp signature of the transition. There is a kink in $n_{\rm Hall}$ at the critical value of the carrier concentration, $x_c$; as the critical point is approached from the ordered side, the slope of $n_{\rm Hall}$ diverges. Hall transport experiments in the cuprates, at high magnetic fields sufficient to destroy superconductivity, should reveal this effect.

Spin and Current Correlation Functions in the \bf d-density Wave State of the Cuprates

We calculate the spin-spin and current-current correlation functions in states exhibiting d_{{x^2}-{y^2}}-density wave (DDW) order, d_{{x^2}-{y^2}} superconducting order (DSC), or both types of order. The spin-spin correlation functions in a state with both DDW and DSC order and in a state with DDW order alone, respectively, illuminate the resonant peak seen in the superconducting state of the underdoped cuprates and the corresponding feature seen in the pseudogap regime. The current-current correlation function in a state with both DDW and DSC order evinces a superfluid density with doping dependence which is consistent with that of the underdoped cuprates. These calculations strengthen the identification of the pseudogap with DDW order and of the underdoped cuprates with a state with both DDW and DSC order.
