Mixed signals in the IR: Positivity bounds with indefinite species

In theories with multiple particle species standard fixed-t positivity bounds do not directly apply to 2-to-2 definite species scattering amplitudes when the initial and final state are not the same (inelastic processes). These inelastic amplitudes are nevertheless constrained by positivity bounds indirectly, by considering scattering states which are arbitrary superpositions of definite species two-particle states. While these `superposition bounds' have been studied and utilised extensively in the past, earlier analyses typically consider cases insensitive to relative particle masses and IR branch cuts. Here we derive new families of bounds that take account and depend explicitly on mass differences between species making no assumption of weak-coupling. We emphasise unusual non-analyticities induced by the IR mass difference within the superposition amplitude and use fixed (backwards) angle dispersion relations to prove our bounds. We then discuss extensions of our results to `improved bounds', with implications worth exploring for pions and other EFTs of the Standard Model and Beyond, particularly where IR branch cuts are non-negligible.

Double Copy in AdS3 from Minitwistor Space

The double copy relates gravitational theories to the square of gauge theories. While it is well understood in flat backgrounds, its precise realisation around curved spacetimes remains an open question. In this paper, we construct a classical double copy for cohomology class representatives in the minitwistor space of hyperbolic spacetimes. We find that the realisation of a physical double copy requires that the masses of the different spinning fields are not equal, contrary to the flat space prescription. This leads to a position-space double copy for bulk-to-boundary propagators. We also show that in coordinate space, this implies the Cotton double copy for waves and warped black holes of Topologically Massive Gravity. We show that these are exact double copy relations by constructing their Kerr-Schild metrics and also analysing the Kerr-Schild double copy. Furthermore, we find that near the boundary the double copy relates the dual CFT currents.

Positivity-causality competition: a road to ultimate EFT consistency constraints

Effective field theories (EFT) are strongly constrained by fundamental principles such as unitarity, locality, causality, and Lorentz invariance. In this paper, we consider the EFT of photons (or other $U(1)$ gauge field) and compare different approaches to obtain bounds on its Wilson coefficients. We present an analytic derivation of the implications of unitarity (linear and non-linear positivity bounds) and compare these constraints with the requirement of causal propagation of the photon modes around non-trivial backgrounds generated by external sources. We find that the low energy causality condition can give complementary constraints to the positivity bounds. Applying both constraints together can significantly reduce the allowed region of the photon EFT parameters.

Constraints on Regge behaviour from IR physics

We consider positivity constraints applicable to the Effective Field Theory (EFT) of gravity in arbitrary dimensions. By considering scattering of indefinite initial and final states, we highlight the existence of a gravitational scattering amplitude for which full crossing symmetry is manifest and utilize the recently developed crossing symmetric dispersion relations to derive compact non-linear bounds. We show that the null constraints built into these dispersion relations lead to a finite energy sum rule for gravity which may be extended to a one-parameter family of continuous moment sum rules. These sum rules enforce a UV-IR relation which imposes constraints on both the Regge trajectory and residue. We also highlight a situation where the Regge trajectory is uniquely determined in terms of the sub-Regge scale amplitude. Generically the Regge behaviour may be split into an IR sensitive part calculable within a given EFT which mainly depends on the lightest fields in Nature, and an IR independent part which are subject to universal positivity constraints following from unitarity and analyticity.

Reverse Bootstrapping: IR lessons for UV physics

S-matrix bootstrap and positivity bounds are usually viewed as constraints on low-energy theories imposed by the requirement of a standard UV completion. By considering graviton--photon scattering in the Standard Model, we argue that the low-energy theory can be used to put constraints on the UV behaviour of the gravitational scattering amplitudes.

QED positivity bounds

We apply positivity bounds directly to a $U(1)$ gauge theory with charged scalars and charged fermions, i.e. QED, minimally coupled to gravity. Assuming that the massless $t$-channel pole may be discarded, we show that the improved positivity bounds are violated unless new physics is introduced at the parametrically low scale $\Lambda_{\rm new} \sim (e m M_{\rm pl})^{1/2}$, consistent with similar results for scalar field theories, far lower than the scale implied by the weak gravity conjecture. This is sharply contrasted with previous treatments which focus on the application of positivity bounds to the low energy gravitational Euler-Heisenberg effective theory only. We emphasise that the low-cutoff is a consequence of applying the positivity bounds under the assumption that the pole may be discarded. We conjecture an alternative resolution that a small amount of negativity, consistent with decoupling limits, is allowed and not in conflict with standard UV completions, including weakly coupled ones.

Positivity Bounds and the Massless Spin-2 Pole

The presence of a massless spin-2 field in an effective field theory results in a $t$-channel pole in the scattering amplitudes that precludes the application of standard positivity bounds. Despite this, recent arguments based on compactification to three dimensions have suggested that positivity bounds may be applied to the $t$-channel pole subtracted amplitude. If correct this would have deep implications for UV physics and the Weak Gravity Conjecture. Within the context of a simple renormalizable field theory coupled to gravity we find that applying these arguments would constrain the low-energy coupling constants in a way which is incompatible with their actual values. This contradiction persists on deforming the theory. Further enforcing the $t$-channel pole subtracted positivity bounds on such generic renormalizable effective theories coupled to gravity would imply new physics at a scale parametrically smaller than expected, with far reaching implications. This suggests that generically the standard positivity bounds are inapplicable with gravity and we highlight a number of issues that impinge on the formulation of a three-dimensional amplitude which simultaneously satisfies the required properties of analyticity, positivity and crossing symmetry. We conjecture instead a modified bound that ought to be satisfied independently of the precise details of the high energy completion.

Twistor fishnets

Four-dimensional conformal fishnet theory is an integrable scalar theory which arises as a double scaling limit of $\gamma$-deformed maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills. We give a perturbative reformulation of $\gamma$-deformed super-Yang-Mills theory in twistor space, and implement the double scaling limit to obtain a twistor description of conformal fishnet theory. The conformal fishnet theory retains an abelian gauge symmetry on twistor space which is absent in space-time, allowing us to obtain cohomological formulae for scattering amplitudes that manifest conformal invariance. We study various classes of scattering amplitudes in twistor space with this formalism.
