Quantum dynamics in view of Einstein's theory of Brownian motion

A quantum-mechanical version of Einstein's 1905 theory of Brownian motion is presented. Starting from the Hamiltonian dynamics of an isolated composite of objective and environmental systems, subdynamics for the objective system is derived in the spirit of Einstein. The resulting master equation is found to have the Lindblad structure.

Geometric effect and gauge field in nonequilibrium quantum thermostatistics

The concept of work is studied in quantum thermostatistics of a system surrounded by an environment and driven by an external force. It is found that there emerges the gauge theoretical structure in a nonequilibrium process, the field of which is referred to as the work gauge field. The thermodynamic work as the flux of the work gauge field is considered for a cyclic process in the space of the external-force parameters. As an example, the system of a spin-1/2 interacting with an external magnetic field is analyzed. This geometric effect may be observed, for example, in an NMR experiment and can be applied to the problem of cooling/heating of a small system.

Temperature of nonextensive system: Tsallis entropy as Clausius entropy

The problem of temperature in nonextensive statistical mechanics is studied. Considering the first law of thermodynamics and a "quasi-reversible process", it is shown that the Tsallis entropy becomes the Clausius entropy if the inverse of the Lagrange multiplier, $beta$, associated with the constraint on the internal energy is regarded as the temperature. This temperature is different from the previously proposed "physical temperature" defined through the assumption of divisibility of the total system into independent subsystems. A general discussion is also made about the role of Boltzmann's constant in generalized statistical mechanics based on an entropy, which, under the assumption of independence, is nonadditive.

Analytic formula for hidden variable distribution: Complex networks arising from fluctuating random graphs

In analogy to superstatistics, which connects Boltzmann-Gibbs statistical mechanics to its generalizations through temperature fluctuations, complex networks are constructed from the fluctuating Erdos-Renyi random graphs. Here, using the quantum mechanical method, the exact analytic formula is presented for the hidden variable distribution, which describes the fluctuation and generates a generic degree distribution through the Poisson transformation. As an example, a static scale-free network is discussed and the corresponding hidden variable distribution is found to decay as a power law.

Optimality of Natural Time Representation of Complex Time Series

The concept of natural time turned out to be useful in revealing dynamical features behind complex time series including electrocardiograms, ionic current fluctuations of membrane channels, seismic electric signals, and seismic event correlation. However, the origin of this empirical usefulness is yet to be clarified. Here, it is shown that this time domain is in fact optimal for enhancing the signals in time-frequency space by employing the Wigner function and measuring its localization property.

Anomalous Diffusion in View of Einstein's 1905 Theory of Brownian Motion

Einstein's theory of Brownian motion is revisited in order to formulate generalized kinetic theory of anomalous diffusion. It is shown that if the assumptions of analyticity and the existence of the second moment of the displacement distribution are relaxed, the fractional derivative naturally appears in the diffusion equation. This is the first demonstration of the physical origin of the fractional derivative, in marked contrast to the usual phenomenological introduction of it. Furthermore, Einstein's approach is generalized to nonlinear kinetic theory to derive the porous-medium-type equation by the appropriate use of the escort distribution.

Scale-invariant statistics of period in directed earthquake network

A new law regarding structure of the earthquake networks is found. The seismic data taken in California is mapped to a growing directed network. Then, statistics of period in the network, which implies that after how many earthquakes an earthquake returns to the initial location, is studied. It is found that the period distribution obeys a power law, showing the fundamental difficulty of statistical estimate of period.

Scale-free statistics of time interval between successive earthquakes

The statistical property of the calm times, i.e., time intervals between successive earthquakes with arbitrary values of magnitude, is studied by analyzing the seismic time series data in California and Japan. It is found that the calm times obey the Zipf-Mandelbrot power law, exhibiting a new scale-free nature of the earthquake phenomenon. Dependence of the exponent of the power-law distribution on threshold for magnitude is examined. As threshold increases, the tail of the distribution tends to become longer, showing difficulty in statistically estimating time intervals of earthquakes.

Aging in coherent noise models and natural time

Event correlation between aftershocks in the coherent noise model is studied by making use of natural time, which has recently been introduced in complex time-series analysis. It is found that the aging phenomenon and the associated scaling property discovered in the observed seismic data are well reproduced by the model. It is also found that the scaling function is given by the $q$-exponential function appearing in nonextensive statistical mechanics, showing power-law decay of event correlation in natural time.

Constraints and relative entropies in nonextensive statistical mechanics

In nonextensive statistical mechanics, two kinds of definitions have been considered for expectation valu of a physical quantity: one is the ordinary definition and the other is the normalized q-expectation value employing the escort distribution. Since both of them lead to the maximum-Tsallis-entropy distributions of a similar type, it is of crucial importance to determine which the correct physical one is. A point is that the definition of expectation value is indivisibly connected to the form of generalized relative entropy. Studying the properties of the relative entropies associated with these two definitions, it is shown how the use of the escort distribution is essential. In particular, the axiomatic framework proposed by Shore and Johnson is found to support the formalism with the normalized q-expectation value and to exclude the ordinary expectation value in nonextensive statistical mechanics.

Nanothermodynamics:a generic approach to material properties at nanoscale

Granular and nanoscale materials containing a relatively small number of constituents have been studied to discover how their properties differ from their macroscopic counterparts. These studies are designed to test how far the known macroscopic approaches such as thermodynamics may be applicable in these cases. A brief review of the recent literature on these topics is given as a motivation to introduce a generic approach called nanothermodynamics. An important feature that must be incorporated into the theory is the non-additive property because of the importance of surface contributions to the physics of these systems. This is achieved by incorporating fluctuations into the theory right from the start. There are currently two approaches to incorporate this property. Hill (and further elaborated more recently with Chamberlin) initiated an approach by modifying the thermodynamic relations by taking into account the surface effects. We generalize Boltzmann-Gibbs statistical mechanics by relaxing the additivity properties of thermodynamic quantities to include nonextensive features of such systems. An outline of this generalization of the macroscopic thermodynamics to nano-systems will be given here.

Scale-invariant statistics of the degrees of separation in directed earthquake network

Discovery of a new scale-free law of earthquake phenomenon is reported. It is relevant to the structural and dynamical properties of the earthquake network proposed in a recent work [S. Abe and N. Suzuki, Europhys. Lett. 65, 581 (2004)]. The seismic data taken in southern California are mapped to an evolving directed network. It is found that statistics of the degrees of separation between two vertices is characterized by the Zipf-Mandelbrot distribution. This shows how a given earthquake can influence a large number of subsequent earthquakes and describes spatio-temporal criticality/complexity of seismicity in a novel manner.

Nonadditive statistical measure of complexity and values of the entropic index q

A two-parameter family of statistical measures of complexity are introduced based on the Tsallis-type nonadditive entropies. This provides a unified framework for the study of the recently proposed various measures of complexity as well as for the discussion of a whole new class of measures. As a special case, a generalization of the measure proposed by Landsberg and his co-workers based on the Tsallis entropy indexed by q is discussed in detail and its behavior is illustrated using the logistic map. The value of the entropic index, q, with which the maximum of the measure of complexity is located at the edge of chaos, is calculated.

Scaling relations in equilibrium nonextensive thermostatistics

The forms of Euler and Gibbs-Duhem relations discussed in thermodynamics of extensive systems are shown to hold also for nonextensive systems with long-range interactions with a novel interpretation of entities appearing therein. In this way, the principles underlying Tsallis' scaling relations in equilibrium nonextensive thermostatistics are clarified.

Stabilities of generalized entropies

The generalized entropic measure, which is optimized by a given arbitrary distribution under the constraints on normalization of the distribution and the finite ordinary expectation value of a physical random quantity, is considered and its Lesche stability property (that is different from thermodynamic stability) is examined. A general condition, under which the generalized entropy becomes stable, is derived. Examples known in the literature, including the entropy for the stretched-exponential distribution, the quantum-group entropy, and the kappa-entropy are discussed.

Small-world structure of earthquake network

Discoveries of the scale-free and small-world features are reported on a network constructed from the seismic data. It is shown that the connectivity distribution decays as a power law, and the value of the degrees of separation, i.e., the characteristic path length or the diameter, between two earthquakes (as the vertices) chosen at random takes a small value between 2 and 3. The clustering coefficient is also calculated and is found to be about 10 times larger than that in the case of the completely random network. These features highlight a novel aspect of seismicity as a complex phenomenon.
