On the Origin of the 3.3 Micron Unidentified Infrared Emission Feature

The 3.3 $μ$m unidentified infrared emission feature is commonly attributed to C-H stretching band of aromatic molecules. Astronomical observations have shown that this feature is composed of two separate bands at 3.28 and 3.30 $μ$m and the origin of these two bands is unclear. In this paper, we perform vibrational analyses based on quantum mechanical calculations of 153 organic molecules, including both pure aromatic molecules and molecules with mixed aromatic/olefinic/aliphatic hydridizations. We find that many of the C-H stretching vibrational modes in polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) molecules are coupled. Even considering the un-coupled modes only, the correlation between the band intensity ratios and the structure of the PAH molecule is not observed and the 3.28 and 3.30 $μ$m features cannot be directly interpreted in the PAH model. Based on these results, the possible aromatic, olefinic and aliphatic origins of the 3.3 $μ$m feature are discussed. We suggest that the 3.28 $μ$m feature is assigned to aromatic C-H stretch whereas the 3.30 $μ$m feature is olefinic. From the ratio of these two features, the relative olefinic to aromatic content of the carrier can be determined.

Search for Hydrogenated C$_{60}$ (fulleranes) in Circumstellar Envelopes

The recent detection of fullerene (C$_{60}$) in space and the positive assignment of five diffuse interstellar bands to C$_{60}^+$ reinforce the notion that fullerene-related compounds can be efficiently formed in circumstellar envelopes and be present in significant quantities in the interstellar medium. Experimental studies have shown that C$_{60}$ can be readily hydrogenated, raising the possibility that hydrogenated fullerenes (or fulleranes, C$_{60}$H$_m$, $m=1-60$) may be abundant in space. In this paper, we present theoretical studies of the vibrational modes of isomers of C$_{60}$H$_m$. Our results show that the four mid-infrared bands from the C$_{60}$ skeletal vibrations remain prominent in slightly hydrogenated C$_{60}$, but their strengths diminish in different degrees with increasing hydrogenation. It is therefore possible that the observed infrared bands assigned to C$_{60}$ could be due to a mixture of fullerenes and fulleranes. This provides a potential explanation for the observed scatter of the C$_{60}$ band ratios. Our calculations suggest that a feature around 15$μ$m due to the breathing mode of heavily hydrogenated C$_{60}$ may be detectable astronomically. A preliminary search for this feature in 35 C$_{60}$ sources is reported.

The 6 $μ$m Feature as A Tracer of Aliphatic Components of Interstellar Carbonaceous Grains

An unidentified infrared emission (UIE) feature at 6.0 $μ$m is detected in a number of astronomical sources showing the UIE bands. In contrast to the previous suggestion that this band is due to C=O vibrational modes, we suggest that the 6.0 $μ$m feature arises from olefinic double-bond functional groups. These groups are likely to be attached to aromatic rings which are responsible for the major UIE bands. The possibility that the formation of these functional groups is related to the hydrogenation process is discussed.

On the origin of the 11.3 micron unidentified infrared emission feature

The 11.3 $μ$m emission feature is a prominent member of the family of unidentified infrared emission (UIE) bands and is frequently attributed to out-of-plane bending modes of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) molecules. We have performed quantum mechanical calculations of 60 neutral PAH molecules and found that it is difficult to reconcile the observed astronomical feature with any or a mix of these PAH molecules. We have further analyzed the fitting of spectra of several astronomical objects by the NASA PAH database program and found that reasonable fittings to the observed spectra are only possible by including significant contributions from oxygen and/or magnesium containing molecules in the mix. A mixed of pure PAH molecules, even including units of different sizes, geometry and charged states, is unable to fit the astronomical spectra. Preliminary theoretical results on the vibrational spectra of simple molecules with mixed aromatic/aliphatic structures show that these structures have consistent bundles of vibrational modes and could be viable carriers of the UIE bands.

A Theoretical Study on the Vibrational Spectra of PAH Molecules with Aliphatic Sidegroups

The role of aliphatic side groups on the formation of astronomical unidentified infrared emission (UIE) features is investigated by applying the density functional theory (DFT) to a series of molecules with mixed aliphatic-aromatic structures. The effects of introducing various aliphatic groups to a fixed polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) core (ovalene) are studied. Simulated spectra for each molecule are produced by applying a Drude profile at $T$=500 K while the molecule is kept at its electronic ground state. The vibrational normal modes are classified using a semi-quantitative method. This allows us to separate the aromatic and aliphatic vibrations and therefore provide clues to what types of vibrations are responsible for the emissions bands at different wavelengths. We find that many of the UIE bands are not pure aromatic vibrational bands but may represent coupled vibrational modes. The effects of aliphatic groups on the formation of the 8 $μ$m plateau are qua ntitatively determined. The vibrational motions of methyl ($-$CH$_3$) and methyl ene ($-$CH$_2-$) groups can cause the merging of the vibrational bands of the pa rent PAH and the forming of broad features. These results suggest that aliphatic structures can play an important role in th e UIE phenomenon.

On the viability of the PAH model as an explanation of the unidentified infrared emission features

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) molecules are widely considered as the preferred candidate for the carrier of the unidentified infrared emission bands observed in the interstellar medium and circumstellar envelopes. In this paper we report the result of fitting a variety of non-PAH spectra (silicates, hydrogenated amorphous carbon, coal and even artificial spectra) using the theoretical infrared spectra of PAHs from the NASA Ames PAH IR Spectroscopic Database. We show that these non-PAH spectra can be well fitted by PAH mixtures. This suggest that a general match between astronomical spectra and those of PAH mixtures does not necessarily provide definitive support for the PAH hypothesis.

The spatiokinematical structure of H_2O and OH masers in the "water fountain" source IRAS 18460-0151

Using the Very Long Baseline Array and the European VLBI Network, we have observed 22.2 GHz H_2O and 1612 MHz OH masers in the "water fountain" source IRAS 18460-0151. The H_2O maser spectrum has a very wide line-of-sight velocity range (~310 km/s) and consists of three groups of emission features at the blue-shifted (-68 km/s <~ V_LSR <~ -17 km/s) and red-shifted (V_LSR ~= 240 km/s) edges as well as around the systemic velocity (112 km/s <~ V_LSR <~ 133 km/s). The first two H_2O spectral components exhibit a highly-collimated high-velocity bipolar jet on the sky, with an angular separation of ~120 milliarcseconds (mas) (240 AU in linear length) and a three-dimensional flow velocity of ~160 km/s. The flow dynamical age is estimated to be only ~6 yr (at the time of the observation epochs of 2006--2007). Interestingly, the systemic velocity component clearly exhibits a spherically-expanding outflow with a radius of ~36 AU and a flow velocity of ~9 km/s. On the other hand, the OH maser spectrum shows double peaks with a velocity separation of ~25 km/s (V_LSR=$111--116 and 138--141 km/s), as typically seen in circumstellar envelopes of OH/IR stars. The angular offset between the velocity-integrated brightness peaks of the two high-velocity H_2O components is ~25 mas (50 AU). The offset direction and the alignment of the red-shifted maser spots are roughly perpendicular to the axis of the H_2O maser flow. High-accuracy astrometry for the H_2O and OH masers demonstrates that the collimated fast jet and the slowly expanding outflow originate from a single or multiple sources which are located within 15 mas (30 AU). On the other hand, the estimated systemic velocity of the collimated jet (V_sys ~87--113 km/s) has a large uncertainty. This makes it difficult to provide strong constraints on models of the central stellar system of IRAS 18460-0151.

A Molecular Line Survey of the Carbon-Rich Proto-Planetary Nebula AFGL 2688 in the 3mm and 1.3mm Windows

We present a spectral line survey of the proto-planetary nebula AFGL 2688 in the frequency ranges of 71-111 GHz, 157-160 GHz, and 218-267 GHz using the Arizona Radio Observatory 12m telescope and the Heinrich Hertz Submillimeter Telescope. A total of 143 individual spectral features associated with 32 different molecular species and isotopologues were identified. The molecules C3H, CH3CN, H2CO, H2CS, and HCO+ were detected for the first time in this object. By comparing the integrated line strengths of different transitions, we are able to determine the rotation temperatures, column densities, and fractional abundances of the detected molecules. The C, O, and N isotopic ratios in AFGL 2688 are compared with those in IRC+10216 and the Sun, and were found to be consistent with stellar nucleosynthesis theory. Through comparisons of molecular line strengths in asymptotic giant branch stars, proto-planetary nebulae, and planetary nebulae, we discuss the evolution in circumstellar chemistry in the late stages of evolution.

Unidentified Infrared Emission bands: PAHs or MAONs?

We suggest that the carrier of the unidentified infrared emission (UIE) bands is an amorphous carbonaceous solid with mixed aromatic/aliphatic structures, rather than free-flying polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) molecules. Through spectral fittings of the astronomical spectra of the UIE bands, we show that a significant amount of the energy is emitted by the aliphatic component, implying that aliphatic groups are an essential part of the chemical structure. Arguments in favor of an amorphous, solid-state structure rather than a gas-phase molecule as a carrier of the UIE are also presented.

Water Maser Survey on AKARI and IRAS Sources: A Search for "Low-Velocity" Water Fountains

We present the results of a 22GHz H2O maser survey toward a new sample of AGB and post-AGB star candidates. Most of the objects are selected for the first time based on the AKARI data, which have high flux sensitivity in the mid-infrared ranges. We aim at finding H2O maser sources in the transient phase between the AGB and post-AGB stage of evolution, where the envelopes start to develop large deviations from spherical symmetry. The observations were carried out with the Effelsberg 100m radio telescope. Among 204 observed objects, 63 detections (36 new) were obtained. We found 4 objects which may be "water fountain" sources (IRAS 15193+3132, IRAS 18056-1514, OH 16.3-3.0, and IRAS 18455+0448). They possess an H2O maser velocity coverage much smaller than those in other known water fountains. However, the coverage is still larger than that of the 1612MHz OH maser. It implies that there is an outflow with a higher velocity than the envelope expansion velocity (typically <25 km/s), meeting the criterion of the water fountain class. We suggest that these candidates are possibly oxygen-rich late AGB or early post-AGB stars in a stage of evolution immediately after the spherically symmetric AGB mass-loss has ceased.

Multipolar Planetary Nebulae: Not as Geometrically Diversified as Thought

Planetary nebulae (PNe) have diverse morphological shapes, including point-symmetric and multipolar structures. Many PNe also have complicated internal structures such as torus, lobes, knots, and ansae. A complete accounting of all the morphological structures through physical models is difficult. A first step toward such an understanding is to derive the true three-dimensional structure of the nebulae. In this paper, we show that a multipolar nebula with three pairs of lobes can explain many of such features, if orientation and sensitivity effects are taken into account. Using only six parameters - the inclination and position angles of each pair - we are able to simulate the observed images of 20 PNe with complex structures. We suggest that the multipolar structure is an intrinsic structure of PNe and the statistics of multipolar PNe has been severely underestimated in the past.

CO Structure of the 21 Micron Source IRAS 22272+5435: A Sign of a Jet Launch?

We report the results of radio interferometric observations of the 21-micron source IRAS 22272+5435 in the CO J=2-1 line. 21-micron sources are carbon-rich objects in the post-AGB phase of evolution which show an unidentified emission feature at 21 micron. Since 21-micron sources usually also have circumstellar molecular envelopes, the mapping of CO emission from the envelope will be useful in tracing the nebular structure. From observations made with the Combined Array for Research in Millimeter-wave Astronomy (CARMA), we find that a torus and spherical wind model can explain only part of the CO structure. An additional axisymmetric region created by the interaction between an invisible jet and ambient material is suggested.

Discovery of a halo around the Helix Nebula NGC 7293 in the WISE all-sky survey

We report the discovery of an extended halo (40' in diameter) around the planetary nebula NGC7293 (the Helix Nebula) observed in 12micron band from the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer all-sky survey. The mid-infrared halo has an axisymmetric structure with a sharp boundary to the northeast and a more diffuse boundary to the southwest, suggesting an interaction between the stellar wind and the interstellar medium (ISM). The symmetry axis of the halo is well aligned with that of a northeast arc, suggesting that the two structures are physically associated. We have attempted to fit the observed geometry with a model of a moving steady-state stellar wind interacting with the ISM. Possible combinations of the ISM density and the stellar velocity are derived from these fittings. The discrepancies between the model and the observations suggest that the stellar mass loss has a more complicated history, including possible time and angle dependences.

Planetary Nebulae Detected in the Spitzer Space Telescope GLIMPSE 3D Legacy Survey

We used the data from the Spitzer Legacy Infrared Mid-Plane Survey Extraordinaire (GLIMPSE) to investigate the mid-infrared (MIR) properties of planetary nebulae (PNs) and PN candidates. In previous studies of GLIMPSE I& II data, we have shown that these MIR data are very useful in distinguishing PNs from other emission-line objects. In the present paper, we focus on the PNs in the field of the GLIMPSE 3D survey, which has a more extensive latitude coverage. We found a total of 90 Macquarie-AAO-Strasbourg (MASH) and MASH II PNs and 101 known PNs to have visible MIR counterparts in the GLIMPSE 3D survey area. The images and photometry of these PNs are presented. Combining the derived IRAC photometry at 3.6, 4.5, 5.8, 8.0 um with the existing photometric measurements from other infrared catalogs, we are able to construct spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of these PNs. Among the most notable objects in this survey is the PN M1-41, whose GLIMPSE 3D image reveals a large bipolar structure of more than 3 arcmin in extent.

High Velocity Precessing Jets from the Water Fountain IRAS 18286-0959 Revealed by VLBA Observations

We report the results of multi-epoch VLBA observations of the 22.2GHz water maser emission associated with the "water fountain" IRAS 18286-0959. We suggest that this object is the second example of a highly collimated bipolar precessing outflow traced by water maser emission, the other is W43A. The detected water emission peaks are distributed over a velocity range from -50km/s to 150km/s. The spatial distribution of over 70% of the identified maser features is found to be highly collimated along a spiral jet (jet 1) extended southeast to northwest, the remaining features appear to trace another spiral jet (jet 2) with a different orientation. The two jets form a "double-helix" pattern which lies across ~200 milliarcseconds. The maser distribution is reasonably fit by a model consisting of two bipolar precessing jets. The 3D velocities of jet 1 and jet 2 are derived to be 138km/s and 99km/s, respectively. The precession period of jet 1 is about 56 years. For jet 2, three possible models are tested and they give different values for the kinematic parameters. We propose that the appearance of two jets is the result of a single driving source with significant proper motion.

Detection of C60 in the proto-planetary nebula IRAS 01005+7910

We report the first detection of buckminsterfullerene (C60) in a proto-planetary nebula (PPN). The vibrational transitions of C60 at 7.0, 17.4, and 18.9um are detected in the Spitzer/IRS spectrum of IRAS 01005+7910. This detection suggests that fullerenes are formed shortly after the asymptotic giant branch but before the planetary nebulae stage. A comparison with the observations of C60 in other sources is made and the implication on circumstellar chemistry is discussed.

A Spitzer/IRS spectral study of a sample of galactic carbon-rich proto-planetary nebulae

Recent infrared spectroscopic observations have shown that proto-planetary nebulae (PPNs) are sites of active synthesis of organic compounds in the late stages of stellar evolution. This paper presents a study of Spitzer/IRS spectra for a sample of carbon-rich PPNs, all except one of which show the unidentified 21 micron emission feature. The strengths of the aromatic infrared band (AIB), 21 micron, and 30 micron features are obtained by decomposition of the spectra. The observed variations in the strengths and peak wavelengths of the features support the model that the newly synthesized organic compounds gradually change from aliphatic to aromatic characteristics as stars evolve from PPNs to planetary nebulae.

An Optical-Infrared Study of the Young Multipolar Planetary Nebula NGC 6644

High-resolution HST imaging of the compact planetary nebula NGC 6644 has revealed two pairs of bipolar lobes and a central ring lying close to the plane of the sky. From mid-infrared imaging obtained with the Gemini Telescope, we have found a dust torus which is oriented nearly perpendicular to one pair of the lobes. We suggest that NGC 6644 is a multipolar nebula and have constructed a 3-D model which allows the visualization of the object from different lines of sight. These results suggest that NGC 6644 may have similar intrinsic structures as other multipolar nebulae and the phenomenon of multipolar nebulosity may be more common than previously believed.
