Efficient Separation of the Isomeric State $^{26\text{m}}\text{Al}$ from the Intense Ground State Background via Sequential Optical Pumping in Collinear Laser Spectroscopy

We propose a novel, highly efficient method for isolating the isomeric state $^{26\text{m}}\text{Al}$ from an overwhelming ground-state $^{26\text{g}}\text{Al}$ background (isomeric ratio $\sim 20:1$) using optical pumping through a 2.0 m flight zone in collinear laser spectroscopy (CLS). To investigate the underlying optical pumping (OP) dynamics, we developed a comprehensive rate equation framework. While the transition pathways can be intuitively conceptualized via a primary 7-manifold scheme, our numerical simulation solves the full 47-level rate equations by explicitly accounting for all degenerate Zeeman sublevels ($m_F$) to rigorously incorporate polarization selection rules and Clebsch-Gordan coefficients. When the continuous acceleration voltage matches the resonance conditions of the $^{26\text{g}}\text{Al}$ hyperfine transitions, the ground-state atoms undergo a 100% efficient transition into uncoupled dark states within the 2.0 m flight zone. Consequently, background fluorescence from the ground state is completely suppressed in the detection chamber, whereas $^{26\text{m}}\text{Al}$ atoms utilize a closed cycling structure to survive the flight zone, yielding a high-intensity, background-free resonance peak.

Experimental and theoretical studies of hyperfine structures in $^{21}$Na

We measured the hyperfine structure constants, $A(3s^2S_{1/2})$ and $A(3p^2P_{1/2})$, of the neutron-deficient isotope $^{21}\text{Na}$ using CLaSsy, a setup dedicated to collinear laser spectroscopy at RAON. The hyperfine structure constants of $^{21}\text{Na}$ were measured to be $103.6(10)_{\mathrm{stat}}(9)_{\mathrm{syst}}$ MHz for $A(3p^2P_{1/2})$ and $954.9(11)_{\mathrm{stat}}(25)_{\mathrm{syst}}$ MHz for $A(3s^2S_{1/2})$. A systematic comparison with the state-of-the-art ab-initio relativistic coupled cluster calculations shows the role of higher-order correlation effects such as triple excitations in $^{21}$Na. Furthermore, the measurement demonstrates a capability of the CLaSsy setup to conduct collinear laser spectroscopy experiments with a radioactive beam.

Absolute frequency measurement of 1S0 (F = 1/2) - 3P0 (F = 1/2) transition of 171Yb atoms in a one-dimensional optical lattice at KRISS

We measured the absolute frequency of the optical clock transition 1S0 (F = 1/2) - 3P0 (F = 1/2) of 171Yb atoms confined in a one-dimensional optical lattice and it was determined to be 518 295 836 590 863.5(8.1) Hz. The frequency was measured against Terrestrial Time (TT; the SI second on the geoid) by using an optical frequency comb of which the frequency was phase-locked to an H-maser as a flywheel oscillator traceable to TT. The magic wavelength was also measured as 394 798.48(79) GHz. The results are in good agreement with two previous measurements of other institutes within the specified uncertainty of this work.

Dynamical control of matter wave splitting using time-dependent optical lattices

We report on measurements of splitting Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC) by using a time-dependent optical lattice potential. First, we demonstrate the division of a BEC into a set of equally populated components by means of time dependent control of Landau-Zener tunneling in a vertical lattice potential. Next, we apply time dependent optical Bragg mirrors to a BEC oscillating in a harmonic trap. We demonstrate high-order Bragg reflection of the condensate due to multi-photon Raman transitions, where the depth of the optical lattice potential allows for a choice of the order of the transition. Finally, a combination of multiple Bragg reflections and Landau-Zener tunneling allows for the generation of macroscopic arrays of condensates with potential applications in atom optics and atom interferometry.

Pump-probe coupling of matter wave packets to remote lattice states

The coherent manipulation of wave packets is an important tool in many areas of physics. We demonstrate the experimental realization of quasi-free wave packets of ultra-cold atoms bound by an external harmonic trap. The wave packets are produced by modulating the intensity of an optical lattice containing a Bose-Einstein condensate. The evolution of these wave packets is monitored in-situ and their reflection on a band gap is observed. In direct analogy with pump-probe spectroscopy, a probe pulse allows for the resonant de-excitation of the wave packet into localized lattice states at a long, controllable distance of more than 100 lattice sites from the main component. This coherent control mechanism for ultra-cold atoms thus enables controlled quantum state preparation, opening exciting perspectives for quantum metrology and simulation.

Laser induced birefringence in a wavelength-mismatched cascade system of inhomogeneously broadened Yb atoms

We report the observation of laser induced birefringence (LIB) in a wavelength-mismatched cascade system (J=0 \leftrightarrow J=1 \leftrightarrow J=0 transitions) of inhomogeneously broadened ytterbium atoms with strong pump and probe fields. We investigate the transmission spectrum of two circular polarization (σ_p^+ and σ_p^-) components of strong probe field at fixed frequency, depending on the detuning of circularly polarized (σ_c^-) coupling field from two-photon resonance. We find that σ_p^+ (σ_p^-) polarized component exhibits a narrow electromagnetically induced absorption (transparency) spectrum. Numerical solutions of density matrix equations show qualitative agreement with experimental results. A Doppler-free dispersive LIB signal is obtained by detecting the Stokes parameter of the probe field, enabling us to stabilize the frequency of coupling laser without frequency modulation.
