Mechanism behind self-sustained oscillations in direct current glow discharges and dusty plasmas

An alternative explanation to the mechanism behind self-sustained oscillations of ions in direct current (DC) glow discharges is provided. Such description is distinguished from the one provided by the fluid models, where oscillations are attributed to the positive feedback mechanism associated with photoionization of particles and photoemission of electrons from the cathode. Here, oscillations arise as consequence of interaction between an ion and the surface charges induced by it at the bounding electrodes. Such mechanism provides an elegant explanation to why self-sustained oscillations occur only in the negative resistance region of the voltage-current characteristic curve in the DC glow discharges. Furthermore, this alternative description provides an elegant explanation to the formation of plasma fireballs in the laboratory plasma. It has been found that oscillation frequencies increase with ion's surface charge density, but at the rate which is significantly slower than it does with the electric field. The presented mechanism also describes self-sustained oscillations of ions in dusty plasmas, which demonstrates that self-sustained oscillations in dusty plasmas and DC glow discharges involve common physical processes.

Physics of self-sustained oscillations in the positive glow corona

The physics of self-sustained oscillations in the phenomenon of positive glow corona is presented. The dynamics of charged-particle oscillation under static electric field has been briefly outlined; and, the resulting self-sustained current oscillations in the electrodes have been compared with the measurements from the positive glow corona experiments. The profile of self-sustained electrode current oscillations predicted by the presented theory qualitatively agrees with the experimental measurements. For instance, the experimentally observed saw-tooth shaped electrode current pulses are reproduced by the presented theory. Further, the theory correctly predicts the pulses of radiation accompanying the abrupt rises in the saw-tooth shaped current oscillations, as verified from the various glow corona experiments.

A Novel Device for Generating Terahertz Radiation Pulses

The dynamics of a core-shell structured ionized particle between two parallel conductor plates, which is biased with a direct current (DC) voltage, have been investigated. It has been found that an ionized particle oscillates rapidly between the DC voltage biased parallel conductors, where the frequency of oscillation depends on the free-charge density carried by the particle, the DC bias voltage, and the gap across the two conductor plates. As the presented system involves a spatially oscillating ionized particle, it represents a natural prototype for the electric dipole radiation source. Since the frequency of oscillating ionized particle depends on the DC bias voltage across the parallel conductor plates, the presented device has a broad wavelength adjustment range for the emitted radiation.

Charged-particle oscillation in DC voltage biased plane-parallel conductors

The phenomenon of charged-particle oscillation in DC voltage biased plane-parallel conductors is discussed. Traditionally accepted mechanism for explaining the oscillatory behavior of charged particles in such system attributes the phenomenon to a process of charge exchange, which takes place when charged-particle is in close proximity to one of the electrodes. A novel finding here reveals that for microscopic or smaller particles under special circumstances, charged-particle oscillation does not involve charge exchanges. Such system radiates and the frequency of emitted radiation is controlled by a DC voltage biased across the two plane-parallel electrodes.

Charged particle display

An optical shutter based on charged particles is presented. The output light intensity of the proposed device has an intrinsic dependence on the interparticle spacing between charged particles, which can be controlled by varying voltages applied to the control electrodes. The interparticle spacing between charged particles can be varied continuously and this opens up the possibility of particle based displays with continuous grayscale.

Energy harvesting by utilization of nanohelices

An energy harvesting device based on nanohelices is presented. The energy harvesting scheme based on nanohelices involves the same rectification circuitry found in many household electronic goods, which converts alternating current (AC) from a wall outlet into a direct current (DC) supply. The presented device, however, involves the rectification of ambient electromagnetic waves rather than the AC source from a household wall outlet.

Lens design based on instantaneous focal function

The formula for the lens is derived based on the information of instantaneous focal function. Focal function is an important tool in designing lenses with extended depth of focus (EDoF) because this allows EDoF lens designers to try out various mathematical curves using computers to optimize their design. Once an optimal focal function information is obtained, the corresponding physical EDoF lens can be fabricated using the lens equation formulated in this presentation.

The lens surface profile is derived based on the instantaneous focal length versus the lens radius data. The lens design based on instantaneous focal length versus the lens radius data has many useful applications in software assisted image focusing technology.

Is repulsive Casimir force physical?

The Casimir force for charge-neutral, perfect conductors of non-planar geometric configurations have been investigated. The configurations are: (1) the plate-hemisphere, (2) the hemisphere-hemisphere and (3) the spherical shell. The resulting Casimir forces for these physical arrangements have been found to be attractive. The repulsive Casimir force found by Boyer for a spherical shell is a special case requiring stringent material property of the sphere, as well as the specific boundary conditions for the wave modes inside and outside of the sphere. The necessary criteria in detecting Boyer's repulsive Casimir force for a sphere are discussed at the end of this investigation.
