AdS/QHE: Towards a Holographic Description of Quantum Hall Experiments

Transitions among quantum Hall plateaux share a suite of remarkable experimental features, such as semi-circle laws and duality relations, whose accuracy and robustness are difficult to explain directly in terms of the detailed dynamics of the microscopic electrons. They would naturally follow if the low-energy transport properties were governed by an emergent discrete duality group relating the different plateaux, but no explicit examples of interacting systems having such a group are known. Recent progress using the AdS/CFT correspondence has identified examples with similar duality groups, but without the DC ohmic conductivity characteristic of quantum Hall experiments. We use this to propose a simple holographic model for low-energy quantum Hall systems, with a nonzero DC conductivity that automatically exhibits all of the observed consequences of duality, including the existence of the plateaux and the semi-circle transitions between them. The model can be regarded as a strongly coupled analog of the old `composite boson' picture of quantum Hall systems. Non-universal features of the model can be used to test whether it describes actual materials, and we comment on some of these in our proposed model.

Background independent holographic description : From matrix field theory to quantum gravity

We propose a local renormalization group procedure where length scale is changed in spacetime dependent way. Combining this scheme with an earlier observation that high energy modes in renormalization group play the role of dynamical sources for low energy modes at each scale, we provide a prescription to derive background independent holographic duals for field theories. From a first principle construction, it is shown that the holographic theory dual to a D-dimensional matrix field theory is a (D+1)-dimensional quantum theory of gravity coupled with matter fields of various spins. The gravitational theory has (D+1) first-class constraints which generate local spacetime transformations in the bulk. The (D+1)-dimensional diffeomorphism invariance is a consequence of the freedom to choose different local RG schemes.

Fractionalized topological insulators from frustrated spin models in three dimensions

We present a theory of three dimensional fractionalized topological insulators in the form of U(1) spin liquids with gapped fermionic spinons in the bulk and topologically protected gapless spinon surface states. Starting from a spin-1/2 model on a pyrochlore lattice, with frustrated antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic exchange interactions, we show that decomposition of the latter interactions, within slave-fermion representation of the spins, can naturally give rise to an emergent spin-orbit coupling for the spinons. This stabilizes a fractionalized topological insulators which also have bulk bond spin-nematic order. Finally, we describe the low energy properties of these states.

Spin-Orbital Locking, Emergent Pseudo-Spin, and Magnetic order in Honeycomb Lattice Iridates

The nature of the effective spin Hamiltonian and magnetic order in the honeycomb iridates is explored by considering a trigonal crystal field effect and spin-orbit coupling. Starting from a Hubbard model, an effective spin Hamiltonian is derived in terms of an emergent pseudo-spin-1/2 moment in the limit of large trigonal distortions and spin-orbit coupling. The present pseudo-spins arise from a spin-orbital locking and are different from the jeff = 1/2 moments that are obtained when the spin-orbit coupling dominates and trigonal distortions are neglected. The resulting spin Hamiltonian is anisotropic and frustrated by further neighbour interactions. Mean field theory suggests a ground state with 4-sublattice zig-zag magnetic order in a parameter regime that can be relevant to the honeycomb iridate compound Na2IrO3, where similar magnetic ground state has recently been observed. Various properties of the phase, the spin-wave spectrum and experimental consequences are discussed. The present approach contrasts with the recent proposals to understand iridate compounds starting from the strong spin-orbit coupling limit and neglecting non-cubic lattice distortions.

Holographic Matter : Deconfined String at Criticality

We derive a holographic dual for a gauged matrix model in general dimensions from a first-principle construction. The dual theory is shown to be a closed string field theory which includes a compact two-form gauge field coupled with closed strings in one higher dimensional space. Possible phases of the matrix model are discussed in the holographic description. Besides the confinement phase and the IR free deconfinement phase, there can be two different classes of critical states. The first class describes `holographic critical states' where strings are deconfined in the bulk. The second class describes `non-holographic critical states' where strings are confined due to proliferation of topological defects for the two-form gauge field. This implies that the critical states of the matrix model which admit holographic descriptions with deconfined string in the bulk form novel universality classes with non-trivial quantum orders which make the holographic critical states qualitatively distinct from the non-holographic critical states. The signatures of the non-trivial quantum orders in the holographic states are discussed. Finally, we discuss a possibility that open strings emerge as fractionalized excitations of closed strings along with an emergent one-form gauge field in the bulk.

Order in a Spatially Anisotropic Triangular Antiferromagnet

The phase diagram of the spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet on an anisotropic triangular lattice of weakly coupled chains, a model relevant to Cs2CuCl4, is investigated using a renormalization group analysis, which includes marginal couplings important for connecting to numerical studies of this model. In particular, the relative stability of incommensurate spiral spin-density order and collinear antiferromagnetic order is studied. While incommensurate spiral order is found to exist over most of the phase diagram in the presence of a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction, at small interchain and extremely weak DM couplings, collinear antiferromagnetic order can survive. Our results imply that Cs2CuCl4 is well within the part of the phase diagram where spiral order is stable. The implications of the renormalization group analysis for numerical studies, many of which have found spin-liquidlike behavior, are discussed.

Holographic description of large N gauge theory

Based on the earlier work [S.-S. Lee, Nucl. Phys. B 832, 567 (2010)], we derive a holographic dual for the D-dimensional U(N) lattice gauge theory from a first principle construction. The resulting theory is a lattice field theory of closed loops, dubbed as lattice loop field theory which is defined on a (D+1)-dimensional space. The lattice loop field theory is well defined non-perturbatively, and it becomes weakly coupled and local in the large N limit with a large 't Hooft coupling.

TASI Lectures on Emergence of Supersymmetry, Gauge Theory and String in Condensed Matter Systems

The lecture note consists of four parts. In the first part, we review a 2+1 dimensional lattice model which realizes emergent supersymmetry at a quantum critical point. The second part is devoted to a phenomenon called fractionalization where gauge boson and fractionalized particles emerge as low energy excitations as a result of strong interactions between gauge neutral particles. In the third part, we discuss about stability and low energy effective theory of a critical spin liquid state where stringy excitations emerge in a large N limit. In the last part, we discuss about an attempt to come up with a prescription to derive holographic theory for general quantum field theory.

Holographic description of quantum field theory

We propose that general D-dimensional quantum field theories are dual to (D+1)-dimensional local quantum theories which in general include objects with spin two or higher. Using a general prescription, we construct a (D+1)-dimensional theory which is holographically dual to the D-dimensional O(N) vector model. From the holographic theory, the phase transition and critical properties of the model in dimensions D>2 are described.

Low energy effective theory of Fermi surface coupled with U(1) gauge field in 2+1 dimensions

We study the low energy effective theory for a non-Fermi liquid state in 2+1 dimensions, where a transverse U(1) gauge field is coupled with a patch of Fermi surface with N flavors of fermion in the large N limit. In the low energy limit, quantum corrections are classified according to the genus of the 2d surface on which Feynman diagrams can be drawn without a crossing in a double line representation, and all planar diagrams are important in the leading order. The emerging theory has the similar structure to the four dimensional SU(N) gauge theory in the large N limit. Because of strong quantum fluctuations caused by the abundant low energy excitations near the Fermi surface, low energy fermions remain strongly coupled even in the large N limit. As a result, there are infinitely many quantum corrections that contribute to the leading frequency dependence of the Green's function of fermion on the Fermi surface. On the contrary, the boson self energy is not modified beyond the one-loop level and the theory is stable in the large N limit. The non-perturbative nature of the theory also shows up in correlation functions of gauge invariant operators.

A Non-Fermi Liquid from a Charged Black Hole; A Critical Fermi Ball

Using the AdS/CFT correspondence, we calculate a fermionic spectral function in a 2+1 dimensional non-relativistic quantum field theory which is dual to a gravitational theory in the $AdS_4$ background with a charged black hole. The spectral function shows no quasiparticle peak but the Fermi surface is still well defined. Interestingly, all momentum points inside the Fermi surface are critical and the gapless modes are defined in a {\it critical Fermi ball} in the momentum space.

A Fractionalized Quantum Spin Hall Effect

Effects of electron correlations on a two dimensional quantum spin Hall (QSH) system are studied. We examine possible phases of a generalized Hubbard model on a bilayer honeycomb lattice with a spin-orbit coupling and short range electron-electron repulsions at half filling, based on the slave rotor mean-field theory. Besides the conventional QSH phase and a broken-symmetry insulating phase, we find a new phase, a fractionalized quantum spin Hall phase, where the QSH effect arises for fractionalized spinons which carry only spin but not charge. Experimental manifestations of the exotic phase and effects of fluctuations beyond the saddle point approximation are also discussed.

Emergence of gravity from interacting simplices

We consider a statistical model of interacting 4-simplices fluctuating in an N-dimensional target space. We argue that a gravitational theory may arise as a low energy effective theory in a strongly interacting phase where the simplices form clusters with an emergent space and time with the Euclidean signature. In the large N limit, two possible phases are discussed, that is, `gravitational Coulomb phase' and `gravitational Higgs phase'.

Stability of the U(1) spin liquid with spinon Fermi surface in 2+1 dimensions

We study the stability of the 2+1 dimensional U(1) spin liquid state against proliferation of instantons in the presence of spinon Fermi surface. By mapping the spinon Fermi surface into an infinite set of 1+1 dimensional chiral fermions, it is argued that an instanton has an infinite scaling dimension for any nonzero number of spinon flavors. Therefore, the spin liquid phase is stable against instantons and the non-compact U(1) gauge theory is a good low energy description.

Many-body generalization of the Z2 topological invariant for the quantum spin Hall effect

We propose a many-body generalization of the Z2 topological invariant for the quantum spin Hall insulator, which does not rely on single-particle band structures. The invariant is derived as a topological obstruction that distinguishes topologically distinct many-body ground states on a torus. It is also expressed as a Wilson-loop of the SU(2) Berry gauge field, which is quantized due to the time-reversal symmetry.

Emergence of supersymmetry at a critical point of a lattice model

Supersymmetry is a symmetry between a boson and a fermion. Although there is no apparent supersymmetry in nature, its mathematical consistency and appealing property have led many people to believe that supersymmetry may exist in nature in the form of a spontaneously broken symmetry. In this paper, we explore an alternative possibility by which supersymmetry is realized in nature, that is, supersymmetry dynamically emerges in the low energy limit of a non-supersymmetric condensed matter system. We propose a 2+1D lattice model which exhibits an emergent space-time supersymmetry at a quantum critical point. It is shown that there is only one relevant perturbation at the supersymmetric critical point in the $ε$-expansion and the critical theory is the two copies of the Wess-Zumino theory with four supercharges. Exact critical exponents are predicted.

Particle-Hole Symmetry and the $ν={5/2}$ Quantum Hall State

We discuss the implications of approximate particle-hole symmetry in a half-filled Landau level in which a paired quantum Hall state forms. We note that the Pfaffian state is not particle-hole symmetric. Therefore, in the limit of vanishing Landau level mixing, in which particle-hole transformation is an exact symmetry, the Pfaffian spontaneously breaks this symmetry. There is a particle-hole conjugate state, which we call the anti-Pfaffian, which is degenerate with the Pfaffian in this limit. We observe that strong Landau level mixing should favor the Pfaffian, but it is an open problem which state is favored for the moderate Landau level mixing which is present in experiments. We discuss the bulk and edge physics of the anti-Pfaffian. We analyze a simplified model in which transitions between analogs of the two states can be studied in detail. Finally, we discuss experimental implications.

Susceptibility of a spinon Fermi surface coupled to a U(1) gauge field

We study the theory of a U(1) gauge field coupled to a spinon Fermi surface. Recently this model has been proposed as a possible description of the organic compound $κ-(BEDT-TTF)_2 Cu_2 (CN)_3$. We calculate the susceptibility of this system and in particular examine the effect of pairing of the underlying spin liquid. We show that this proposed theory is consistent with the observed susceptibility measurements.
