Multipolar superconductivity in Luttinger semimetals

Topological superconductivity in multiband systems has received much attention due to a variety of possible exotic superconducting order parameters as well as non-trivial bulk and surface states. While the impact of coexisting magnetic order on superconductivity has been studied for many years, such as ferromagnetic superconductors, the implication of coexisting multipolar order has not been explored much despite the possibility of multipolar hidden order in a number of $f$-electron materials. In this work, we investigate topological properties of multipolar superconductors that may arise when quadrupolar local moments are coupled to conduction electrons in the multiband Luttinger semimetal. We show that the multipolar ordering of local moments leads to various multipolar superconductors with distinct topological properties. We apply these results to the quadrupolar Kondo semimetal system, PrBi, by deriving the microscopic multipolar Kondo model and examining the possible superconducting order parameters. We also discuss how to experimentally probe the topological nature of the Bogoliubov quasiparticles in distinct multipolar superconductors via doping and external pressure, especially in the context of PrBi.

Magnetic field and thermal Hall effect in a pyrochlore U(1) quantum spin liquid

The antiferromagnetic system on a rare-earth pyrochlore has been focused as a strong candidate of U(1) quantum spin liquid. Here, we study the phase transitions driven by external magnetic field and discuss the large thermal Hall effect due to emergent spinon excitations with staggered gauge fields. Despite the spinons, the charge excitations of the effective action that carry spin-1/2 quantum number, do not couple to the external field, the emergent U(1) gauge field is influenced in the presence of external magnetic field. Especially along [111] and [110]-directions, we discuss the possible phase transitions between U(1) spin liquids with different gauge fluxes are stabilized in fields. Beyond the cases where gauge flux per plaquette are fixed to be either 0 or $π$, there exists a regime where the staggered gauge fluxes are stabilized without time reversal symmetry. In such a phase, the large thermal Hall conductivity $κ_{xy}/T\sim 4.6\times 10^{-3}\text{W}/(\text{K}^2\cdot\text{m})$ is expected to be observed below 1K.

Spin-helix driven insulating phase in two dimensional lattice

Motivated by emergent $SU(2)$ symmetry in the spin orbit coupled system, we study the spin helix driven insulating phase in two dimensional lattice. When both Rashba and Dresselhaus spin orbit couplings are present, the perfect Fermi surface nesting occurs at a special condition depending on the lattice geometry. In this case, the energies of spin up at any wave vector $\vec{k}$ are equivalent to the ones of spin down at $\vec{k}\!+\!\vec{Q}$ with so-called the \textit{shifting wave vector} $\vec{Q}$. Thus, the system stabilizes magnetic insulator with spiral like magnetic ordering even in the presence of tiny electron-electron interaction where the magnetic ordering wave vector is proportional to $\vec{Q}$. We first show the condition for existence of the \textit{shifting wave vector} in general lattice model and emergent $SU(2)$ symmetry in the spin orbit coupled system. Then, we exemplify this in square lattice at half filling and discuss the insulating phase with (non-) coplanar spin density wave and charge order. Our study emphasizes possible new types of two dimensional magnetic materials and can be applicable to various van-der Waals materials and their heterostructures with the control of electric field, strain and pressure.

Triplet-Superconductivity in Triple-Band Crossings

Multi-band superconductivity in topological semimetals are the paradigms of unconventional superconductors. Their exotic gap structures and topological properties have fascinated searching for material realizations and applications. In this paper, we focus on triple point fermions, a new type of band crossings, and we claim that their superconductivity uniquely stabilizes spin-triplet pairing. Unlike conventional superconductors and other multi band superconductors, such triplet superconductivity is the novel phenomena of triple point fermions where the spin-singlet pairing is strictly forbidden in the on-site interaction due to the Fermi statistics. We find that two distinct triplet superconductors, characterized by the presence and absence of time-reversal symmetry, are allowed which in principle can be controlled by tuning the chemical potential. For the triplet superconductor with time-reversal symmetry, we show that topologically protected nodal lines are realized. In contrast, for time-reversal broken case, the complication of topologically protected Bogoliubov Fermi surfaces emerges. Our theoretical study provides a new guidance for searching triplet superconductivities and their exotic implications.

Higher-Order Topological Insulator in Twisted Bilayer Graphene

Higher-order topological insulators are newly proposed topological phases of matter, whose bulk topology manifests as localized modes at two- or higher-dimensional lower boundaries. In this work, we propose the twisted bilayer graphenes with large angles as higher-order topological insulators, hosting topological corner charges. At large commensurate angles, the intervalley scattering opens up the bulk gap and the corner states occur at half filling. Based on both first-principles calculations and analytic analysis, we show the striking results that the emergence of the corner states do not depend on the choice of the specific angles as long as the underlying symmetries are intact. Our results show that the twisted bilayer graphene can serve as a robust candidate material of two-dimensional higher-order topological insulator.

Stacking sensitive topological phases in a bilayer Kane-Mele-Hubbard model at quarter filling

Layered quasi two dimensional systems have garnered huge interest both in the advancement of technology and in understanding emergent physics such as unconventional superconductivity, topological phases. In particular, the study of topological properties in some bilayer systems like transition metal chalcogenides and iridates has been the point of attraction due to comparatively strong spin orbit coupling of transition metal ions. In this paper, we analyze the topological phases induced by the interplay of electron correlation and spin orbit coupling in different stacking orders of bilayer honeycomb lattice at quarter filling. Considering the two most common stacking orders, AA and bernel (AB) stacking, we show that the stacking order plays a crucial role in the topological phase transitions of the bilayer interacting system. For AA stacking case, the system realizes quantum spin Hall insulator in the presence (absence) of time reversal symmetry and magnetically ordered insulator. For bernel stacking case, however, additional phases such as charge ordered normal insulator or Chern insulator with both charge and magnetic order can be stabilized. Based on our analysis, we discuss the scope of experimental realization in bilayers of transition metal chalcogenides.

Unveiling Hidden Orders: Magnetostriction as a Probe of Multipolar-Ordered States

Broken symmetries in solids involving higher order multipolar degrees of freedom are historically referred to as "hidden orders" due to the formidable task of detecting them with conventional probes. Examples of such hidden orders include spin-nematic order in quantum magnets, and quadrupolar or higher multipolar orders in various correlated quantum materials. In this work, we theoretically propose that the study of magnetostriction provides a powerful and novel tool to directly detect higher-order multipolar symmetry breaking $-$ such as the elusive octupolar order $-$ by examining its scaling behaviour with respect to an applied magnetic field $h$. As an illustrative example, we examine such key scaling signatures in the context of Pr-based cage compounds with strongly correlated $f$-electrons, Pr(Ti,V,Ir)$_2$(Al,Zn)$_{20}$, whose low energy degrees of freedom are composed of purely higher-order multipoles: quadrupoles $\mathcal{O}_{20,22}$ and octupole $\mathcal{T}_{xyz}$. Employing a symmetry-based Landau theory of multipolar moments coupled to lattice strain fields, we demonstrate that a magnetic field applied along the [111] direction results in a length change with a distinct linear-in-$h$ scaling behaviour, accompanied by hysteresis, below the octupolar ordering temperature. We show that the resulting "magnetostriction coefficient" is directly proportional to the octupolar order parameter, providing the first clear access to this subtle order parameter. Along other field directions, we show that the field dependence of the magnetostriction provides a window into quadrupolar orders. Our work provides a springboard for future experimental and theoretical investigations of multipolar orders and their quantum phase transitions in a wide variety of systems.

Emergent Localization in Dodecagonal Bilayer Quasicrystals

A new type of long-range ordering in the absence of translational symmetry gives rise to drastic revolution of our common knowledge in condensed matter physics. Quasicrystal, as such unconventional system, became a plethora to test our insights and to find exotic states of matter. In particular, electronic properties in quasicrystal have gotten lots of attention along with their experimental realization and controllability in twisted bilayer systems. In this work, we study how quasicrystalline order in bilayer systems can induce unique localization of electrons without any extrinsic disorders. We focus on dodecagonal quasicrystal that has been demonstrated in twisted bilayer graphene system in recent experiments. In the presence of small gap, we show the localization generically occurs due to non-periodic nature of quasicrystal, which is evidenced by the inverse participation ratio and the energy level statistics. We understand the origin of such localization by approximating the dodecagonal quasicrystals as an impurity scattering problem.

Topological d+s wave superconductors in a multi-orbital quadratic band touching system

Realization of topological superconductors is one of the most important goals in studies of topological phases in quantum materials. In this work, we theoretically propose a novel way to attain topological superconductors with non-trivial Fermi surfaces of Bogoliubov quasiparticles. Considering the interacting Luttinger model with $j\!=\!3/2$ electrons, we investigate the dominant superconducting channels for a multi-orbital quadratic band-touching system with finite chemical potential, which breaks the particle-hole symmetry in the normal state. Notably, while the system generally favors d-wave pairing, the absence of the particle-hole symmetry necessarily induces parasitic s-wave pairing. Based on the Landau theory with $SO(3)$ symmetry, we demonstrate that two kinds of topological superconductors are energetically favored; uniaxial nematic phase with parasitic $s$ wave pairing ($d_{(3z^2-r^2)}\!+\!s$) and time-reversal-symmetry broken phase with parasitic $s$ wave pairing ($d_{(3z^2-r^2,xy)}\!+\!id_{x^2-y^2}\!+\!s$). These superconductors contain either nodal lines or Fermi pockets of gapless Bogoliubov quasiparticles and moreover exhibit topological winding numbers $\pm2$, leading to non-trivial surface states such as drumhead-like surface states or Fermi arcs. We discuss applications of our theory to relevant families of materials, especially half-heusler compound YPtBi, and suggest possible future experiments.

Topological phases of non-symmorphic crystals : Shastry-Sutherland lattice at integer filling

Motivated by intertwined crystal symmetries and topological phases, we study the possible realization of topological insulator in nonsymmorphic crystals at integer fillings. In particular, we consider spin orbit coupled electronic systems of two-dimensional crystal Shastry-Sutherland lattice at integer filling where the gapless line degeneracy is protected by glide reflection symmetry. Based on a simple tight-binding model, we investigate how the topological insulating phase is stabilized by breaking nonsymmorphic symmetries but in the presence of time reversal symmetry and inversion symmetry. In addition, we also discuss the regime where Dirac semimetal is stabilized, having non trivial $Z_2$ invariants even without spin orbit coupling (SOC). Our study can be extended to more general cases where all lattice symmetries are broken and we also discuss possible application to topological Kondo insulators in nonsymmorphic crystals where crystal symmetries can be spontaneously broken as a function of Kondo coupling.

Topological multiferroic phases in the extended Kane-Mele-Hubbard Model in the Hofstadter regime

We investigate the new quantum phases on the extended Kane-Mele-Hubbard model of honeycomb lattice in the Hofstadter regime. In this regime, orbital motion of the electrons can induce various topological phases with spontaneously broken symmetries when the spin orbit coupling and electron correlations coexist. Here, we consider the interaction effects in the Kane-Mele model and discuss possible phases in the presence of magnetic field at integer fillings of electrons. In particular, focusing on 2π/3 magnetic flux per plaquette, the realization of numerous quantum phases are discussed within the mean field framework; insulator with coplanar magnetic ordering, ferrimagnetic Chern insulator with nematic charge order, ferrimagnetic-ferrielectric Chern insulators etc. Many of these phase transitions are also accompanied with the change in the topological invariants of the system. Based on our theoretical study, we propose topological multiferroic phases with a scope of realization in 2D van-der Waals materials and optical lattice system where the significant interplay of magnetic field, spin orbit coupling and interactions can be engineered.

Landau theory of multipolar orders in Pr(TM)$_2$X$_{20}$ Kondo materials

A series of Pr(TM)$_2$X$_{20}$ (with TM=Ti,V,Rh,Ir and X=Al,Zn) Kondo materials, containing non-Kramers Pr$^{3+}$ $4f^2$ moments on a diamond lattice, have been shown to exhibit intertwined orders such as quadrupolar order and superconductivity. Motivated by these experiments, we propose and study a Landau theory of multipolar order to capture the phase diagram and its field dependence. In zero magnetic field, we show that different quadrupolar states, or the coexistence of quadrupolar and octupolar orderings, may lead to ground states with multiple broken symmetries. Upon heating, such states may undergo two-step thermal transitions into the symmetric paramagnetic phase, with partial restoration of broken symmetries in the intervening phase. For nonzero magnetic field, we show the evolution of these thermal phase transitions strongly depends on the field direction, due to clock anisotropy terms in the free energy. Our findings shed substantial light on experimental results in the Pr(TM)$_2$Al$_{20}$ materials. We propose further experimental tests to distinguish purely quadrupolar orders from coexisting quadrupolar-octupolar orders.

Discovery of new magnetic orders on pyrochlore spinels

Frustration in spin system can give rise to unique ordered states and as a consequence several physical phenomena are expected such as multiferroics, high temperature superconductors and anomalous hall effect. Here we report the "new magnetic orders" induced by anisotropic spin exchanges on pyrochlore spinels as the interplay of spin orbit coupling and geometrical frustration. Due to complicated superexchange paths of B-site spinels, we claim that anisotropic interaction between next-nearest neighbors play an important role. Based on the systematic studies of generic spin model, we argue that several classical spin states can be explored in spinel systems; local XY state, all-in all-out state, Palmer-Chalker state and coplanar spiral state. In addition, we reveal new types of magnetic phases with finite ordering wavevectors, labeled as 'octagonal (prism)' state and '(distorted) cubic' states. When the 'octagonal prism' state is stabilized, non-zero scalar spin chirality induces alternating net current in addition to finite orbital current and orbital magnetization even in Mott insulators. Finally, we also discuss the relevance of 'distorted cubic' state to the magnetic order of spinel compound GeCo2O4.

Two-stage multipolar ordering in Pr(TM)$_2$Al$_{20}$ Kondo materials

Among heavy fermion materials, there is a set of rare-earth intermetallics with non-Kramers Pr$^{3+}$ $4f^2$ moments which exhibit a rich phase diagram with intertwined quadrupolar orders, superconductivity, and non-Fermi liquid behavior. However, more subtle broken symmetries such as multipolar orders in these Kondo materials remain poorly studied. Here, we argue that multi-spin interactions between local moments beyond the conventional two-spin exchange must play an important role in Kondo materials near the ordered to heavy Fermi liquid transition. We show that this drives a plethora of phases with coexisting multipolar orders and multiple thermal phase transitions, providing a natural framework for interpreting experiments on the Pr(TM)$_2$Al$_{20}$ class of compounds.

Switching Magnetism and Superconductivity with Spin-Polarized Current in Iron-Based Superconductor

We have explored a new mechanism for switching magnetism and superconductivity in a magnetically frustrated iron-based superconductor using spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy (SPSTM). Our SPSTM study on single crystal Sr$_2$VO$_3$FeAs shows that a spin-polarized tunneling current can switch the Fe-layer magnetism into a non-trivial $C_4$ (2$\times$2) order, not achievable by thermal excitation with unpolarized current. Our tunneling spectroscopy study shows that the induced $C_4$ (2$\times$2) order has characteristics of plaquette antiferromagnetic order in Fe layer and strongly suppressed superconductivity. Also, thermal agitation beyond the bulk Fe spin ordering temperature erases the $C_4$ state. These results suggest a new possibility of switching local superconductivity by changing the symmetry of magnetic order with spin-polarized and unpolarized tunneling currents in iron-based superconductors.

Magnetic Chern Insulators in a monolayer of Transition Metal Trichalcogenides

A monolayer of transition metal trichalcogenides has received a lot of attention as potential two dimensional magnetic materials. The system has a honeycomb structure of transition metal ions, where both spin-orbit coupling and electron correlation effect play an important role. Here, motivated by these transition metal series with effective doping or mixed valence case, we propose the possible realization of magnetic Chern insulators at quarter filled honeycomb lattice. We show that the interplay of intrinsic spin-orbit coupling and electron correlation opens a wide region of ferromagnetic Chern insulating phases in between metals and normal insulators. Within the mean field approximation, we present the phase diagram of a quarter filled Kane-Mele Hubbard model and also discuss the effects of Rashba spin-orbit coupling and nearest neighbor interactions on it.

Atomic-scale observation and manipulation of plaquette antiferromagnetic order in iron-based superconductor

The symmetry requirement and the origin of magnetic orders coexisting with superconductivity have been strongly debated issues of iron-based superconductors (FeSCs). Observation of C$_4$-symmetric antiferromagnetism in violation of the inter-band nesting condition of spin-density waves in superconducting ground state will require significant change in our understanding of the mechanism of FeSC. The superconducting material Sr$_2$VO$_3$FeAs, a bulk version of monolayer FeSC in contact with a perovskite layer with its magnetism (T$_N$ ~ 50 K) and superconductivity (T$_c$ ~ 37 K) coexisting at parent state, has no reported structural orthorhombic distortion and thus makes a perfect system to look for theoretically expected C$_4$ magnetisms. Based on variable temperature spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy (SPSTM) with newly discovered imaging mechanism that removes the static surface reconstruction (SR) pattern by fluctuating it rapidly with spin-polarized tunneling current, we could visualize underlying C$_4$ symmetric (2$\times$2) magnetic domains and its phase domain walls. We find that this magnetic order is perfectly consistent with the plaquette antiferromagnetic order in tetragonal Fe spin lattice expected from theories based on the Heisenberg exchange interaction of local Fe moments and the quantum order by disorder. The inconsistency of its modulation Q vectors from the nesting condition also implies that the nesting-based C$_2$ symmetric magnetism is not a unique prerequisite of high-T$_c$ FeSC. Furthermore, the plaquette antiferromagnetic domain wall dynamics under the influence of small spin torque effect of spin-polarized tunneling current are shown to be consistent with theoretical simulation based on the extended Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation.

Filling-enforced Kondo semimetals in two-dimensional non-symmorphic crystals

We study the competition between Kondo screening and frustrated magnetism on the non-symmorphic Shastry-Sutherland Kondo lattice at a filling of two conduction electrons per unit cell. A previous analysis of this model identified a set of gapless partially Kondo screened phases intermediate between the Kondo-destroyed paramagnet and the heavy Fermi liquid. Based on crystal symmetries, we argue that (i)~both the paramagnet and the heavy Fermi liquid are {\it semimetals} protected by a glide symmetry; and (ii)~partial Kondo screening breaks the symmetry, removing this protection and allowing the partially-Kondo-screened phase to be deformed into a Kondo insulator via a Lifshitz transition. We confirm these results using large-$N$ mean field theory and then use non-perturbative arguments to derive a generalized Luttinger sum rule constraining the phase structure of 2D non-symmorphic Kondo lattices beyond the mean-field limit.
