Unlocking the Wronskian Tower: A Simplification of the Holomorphic Modular Bootstrap

Characters of rational conformal field theories solve modular linear differential equations labelled by their order and the Wronskian index $\ell$. Direct classification of admissible solutions by solving MLDEs becomes increasingly difficult at higher $\ell$ -- where movable poles and accessory parameters appear. In this work we introduce differential operators that relate higher-$\ell$ solutions to lower-$\ell$ ones while preserving modular covariance and integrality of the \(q\)-series. In rank two, this generates all allowed Wronskian sectors from the Mathur--Mukhi--Sen equation. In rank three and higher, it reduces the construction of higher-$\ell$ quasi-characters to simpler equations with lower $\ell$. This gives an efficient new route for organising candidate RCFT characters, and more generally quasi-characters, across the Wronskian tower. As an application, we apply our construction to prove a previously conjectured property on the signs of $\ell=2$ quasi-characters in rank 2.

Generalised 4d Partition Functions and Modular Differential Equations

We prove the equivalence of a class of generalised Schur partition functions $\mathcal Z_G(q;\alpha)$ of 4d $\mathcal N=2$ superconformal gauge theories to contour integral representations of vector-valued modular forms of the type that arise in 2d rational conformal field theories (RCFT). Concretely, we consider the $USp(2N)$ theory with $2N+2$ fundamental hypermultiplets and analytically prove that $\mathcal Z_{USp(2N)}(q;\alpha)$ satisfies an order-$(N+1)$ modular linear differential equation (MLDE) with vanishing Wronskian index, explaining how the parameter $\alpha$ of the former determines the parameters of the latter. Several connections are made to characters of RCFTs including unitary ones. We then propose a two-parameter extension $\mathcal Z_{USp(2N)}(q;\alpha,\beta)$ of the generalised Schur partition function. Finally, we relate the $\alpha=-k$ specialisation to quantum monodromy traces ${\rm Tr}\,M^k$ and formulate a conjecture linking their $k$-dependence to MLDEs.

Signs, growth and admissibility of quasi-characters and the holomorphic modular bootstrap for RCFT

Rational conformal field theories in 2d have partition functions built from holomorphic characters, whose classification can be addressed via the holomorphic modular bootstrap. This is facilitated by a special basis of ``quasi-characters'' that has been completely classified for rank-2. Suitably combining these to form admissible characters with non-negative integral coefficients $a_n$ depends crucially on the signs and growth of the quasi-character coefficients. We use Frobenius recursion relations for Modular Linear Differential Equations to estimate the growth with $c$ of these coefficients in the region $n\sim\frac{c}{12}$ that is inaccessible to Cardy asymptotics, and to prove rigorously that they have alternating signs that stabilise to a fixed sign at this order. This provides a practical path to obtain candidate RCFT partition functions at arbitrary Wronskian index.

Modular Differential Equations with Movable Poles and Admissible RCFT Characters

Studies of modular linear differential equations (MLDE) for the classification of rational CFT characters have been limited to the case where the coefficient functions (in monic form) have no poles, or poles at special points of moduli space. Here we initiate an exploration of the vast territory of MLDEs with two characters and any number of poles at arbitrary points of moduli space. We show how to parametrise the most general equation precisely and count its parameters. Eliminating logarithmic singularities at all the poles provides constraint equations for the accessory parameters. By taking suitable limits, we find recursion relations between solutions for different numbers of poles. The cases of one and two movable poles are examined in detail and compared with predictions based on quasi-characters to find complete agreement. We also comment on the limit of coincident poles. Finally we show that there exist genuine CFT corresponding to many of the newly-studied cases. We emphasise that the modular data is an output, rather than an input, of our approach.

Classification of Unitary RCFTs with Two Primaries and Central Charge Less Than 25

We classify all two-dimensional, unitary, rational conformal field theories with two primaries, central charge $c<25$, and arbitrary Wronskian index. In mathematical parlance, we classify all strongly regular vertex operator algebras (VOAs) with central charge $c<25$ and exactly two simple modules. We find that any such theory is either one of the Mathur-Mukhi-Sen (MMS) theories $\mathsf{A}_{1,1}$, $\mathsf{G}_{2,1}$, $\mathsf{F}_{4,1}$, or $\mathsf{E}_{7,1}$, or it is a coset of a chiral algebra with one primary operator (also known as a holomorphic VOA) by such an MMS theory. By leveraging existing results on the classification of holomorphic VOAs, we are able to explicitly enumerate all of the aforementioned cosets and compute their characters. This leads to 123 theories, most of which are new. We emphasize that our work is a bona fide classification of RCFTs, not just of characters. Our techniques are general, and we argue that they offer a promising strategy for classifying chiral algebras with low central charge beyond two primaries.

Meromorphic Cosets and the Classification of Three-Character CFT

We investigate the admissible vector-valued modular forms having three independent characters and vanishing Wronskian index and determine which ones correspond to genuine 2d conformal field theories. This is done by finding bilinear coset-type relations that pair them into meromorphic characters with central charges 8, 16, 24, 32 and 40. Such pairings allow us to identify some characters with definite CFTs and rule out others. As a key result we classify all unitary three-character CFT with vanishing Wronskian index, excluding $c=8,16$. The complete list has two infinite affine series $B_{r,1},D_{r,1}$ and 45 additional theories. As a by-product, at higher values of the total central charge we also find constraints on the existence or otherwise of meromorphic theories. We separately list several cases that potentially correspond to Intermediate Vertex Operator Algebras.

New meromorphic CFTs from cosets

In recent years it has been understood that new rational CFTs can be discovered by applying the coset construction to meromorphic CFTs. Here we turn this approach around and show that the coset construction, together with the classification of meromorphic CFT with $c\leq 24$, can be used to predict the existence of new meromorphic CFTs with $c\geq 32$ whose Kac-Moody algebras are non-simply-laced and/or at levels greater than 1. This implies they are non-lattice theories. Using three-character coset relations, we propose 34 infinite series of meromorphic theories with arbitrarily large central charge, as well as 46 theories at $c=32$ and $c=40$.

AdS$_3$ Gravity and RCFT Ensembles with Multiple Invariants

We use the Poincaré series method to compute gravity partition functions associated to SU(N) level 1 WZW models with arbitrarily large numbers of modular invariants. The result is an average over these invariants, with the weights being given by inverting a matrix whose size is of order the number of invariants. For the chosen models, this matrix takes a special form that allows us to invert it for arbitrary size and thereby explicitly calculate the weights of this average. For the identity seed we find that the weights are positive for all N, consistent with each model being dual to an ensemble average over CFT's.

Poincaré Series, 3d Gravity and Averages of Rational CFT

We investigate the Poincaré approach to computing 3d gravity partition functions dual to Rational CFT. For a single genus-1 boundary, we show that for certain infinite sets of levels, the SU(2)$_k$ WZW models provide unitary examples for which the Poincare series is a positive linear combination of two modular-invariant partition functions. This supports the interpretation that the bulk gravity theory (a topological Chern-Simons theory in this case) is dual to an average of distinct CFT's sharing the same Kac-Moody algebra. We compute the weights of this average for all seed primaries and all relevant values of k. We then study other WZW models, notably SU($N$)$_1$ and SU(3)$_k$, and find that each class presents rather different features. Finally we consider multiple genus-1 boundaries, where we find a class of seed functions for the Poincaré sum that reproduces both disconnected and connected contributions -- the latter corresponding to analogues of 3-manifold "wormholes" -- such that the expected average is correctly reproduced.

Universal Correlators and Novel Cosets in 2d RCFT

The two-character level-1 WZW models corresponding to Lie algebras in the Cvitanović-Deligne series $A_1,A_2,G_2,D_4,F_4,E_6,E_7$ have been argued to form coset pairs with respect to the meromorphic $E_{8,1}$ CFT. Evidence for this has taken the form of holomorphic bilinear relations between the characters. We propose that suitable 4-point functions of primaries in these models also obey bilinear relations that combine them into current correlators for $E_{8,1}$, and provide strong evidence that these relations hold in each case. Different cases work out due to special identities involving tensor invariants of the algebra or hypergeometric functions. In particular these results verify previous calculations of correlators for exceptional WZW models, which have rather subtle features. We also find evidence that the intermediate vertex operator algebras A$_{0.5}$ and E$_{7.5}$, as well as the three-character A$_{4,1}$ theory, also appear to satisfy the novel coset relation.

Universal RCFT Correlators from the Holomorphic Bootstrap

We elaborate and extend the method of Wronskian differential equations for conformal blocks to compute four-point correlation functions on the plane for classes of primary fields in rational (and possibly more general) conformal field theories. This approach leads to universal differential equations for families of CFT's and provides a very simple re-derivation of the BPZ results for the degenerate fields $ϕ_{1,2}$ and $ϕ_{2,1}$ in the c < 1 minimal models. We apply this technique to compute correlators for the WZW models corresponding to the Deligne-Cvitanović exceptional series of Lie algebras. The application turns out to be subtle in certain cases where there are multiple decoupled primaries. The power of this approach is demonstrated by applying it to compute four-point functions for the Baby Monster CFT, which does not belong to any minimal series.

Rational CFT With Three Characters: The Quasi-Character Approach

Quasi-characters are vector-valued modular functions having an integral, but not necessarily positive, q-expansion. Using modular differential equations, a complete classification has been provided in arXiv:1810.09472 for the case of two characters. These in turn generate all possible admissible characters, of arbitrary Wronskian index, in order two. Here we initiate a study of the three-character case. We conjecture several infinite families of quasi-characters and show in examples that their linear combinations an generate admissible characters with arbitrarily large Wronskian index. The structure is completely different from the order two case, and the novel coset construction of arXiv:1602.01022 plays a key role in discovering the appropriate families. Using even unimodular lattices, we construct some explicit three-character CFT corresponding to the new admissible characters.

Contour Integrals and the Modular S-Matrix

We investigate a conjecture to describe the characters of large families of RCFT's in terms of contour integrals of Feigin-Fuchs type. We provide a simple algorithm to determine the modular S-matrix for arbitrary numbers of characters as a sum over paths. Thereafter we focus on the case of 2, 3 and 4 characters, where agreement between the critical exponents of the integrals and the characters implies that the conjecture is true. In these cases, we compute the modular S-matrix explicitly, verify that it agrees with expectations for known theories, and use it to compute degeneracies and multiplicities of primaries. We also compute S in an 8-character example to provide additional evidence for the original conjecture. On the way we note that the Verlinde formula provides interesting constraints on the critical exponents of RCFT in this context.

Classification of RCFT from Holomorphic Modular Bootstrap: A Status Report

Following the initial proposal in 1988, there has been much progress in classifying Rational Conformal Field Theories in 2 dimensions from the Holomorphic Bootstrap approach. This method starts by postulating a generic holomorphic Modular Linear Differential Equation of a given order and imposing the requirement of non-negative integrality of the coefficients in the series expansion of the solutions, which are then identified as admissible characters, from which a modular-invariant partition function is constructed. In this short note, the status of this project is summarised.

Curiosities above c = 24

Two-dimensional rational CFT are characterised by an integer $\ell$, related to the number of zeroes of the Wronskian of the characters. For two-character RCFT's with $\ell<6$ there is a finite number of theories and most of these are classified. Recently it has been shown that for $\ell \ge 6$ there are infinitely many admissible characters that could potentially describe CFT's. In this note we examine the $\ell=6$ case, whose central charges lie between 24 and 32, and propose a classification method based on cosets of meromorphic CFT's. We illustrate the method using theories on Kervaire lattices with complete root systems. In the process we construct the first known two-character RCFT's beyond $\ell=2$.

Towards a Classification of Two-Character Rational Conformal Field Theories

We provide a simple and general construction of infinite families of consistent, modular-covariant pairs of characters satisfying the basic requirements to describe two-character RCFT. These correspond to solutions of generic second-order modular linear differential equations. To find these solutions, we first construct "quasi-characters" from the Kaneko-Zagier equation and subsequent works by Kaneko and collaborators, together with coset dual generalisations that we provide in this paper. We relate our construction to the Hecke images recently discussed by Harvey and Wu.

Fermions on replica geometries and the $Θ$-$θ$ relation

In arXiv:1706:09426 we conjectured and provided evidence for an identity between Siegel $Θ$-constants for special Riemann surfaces of genus $n$ and products of Jacobi $θ$-functions. This arises by comparing two different ways of computing the \nth \Renyi entropy of free fermions at finite temperature. Here we show that for $n=2$ the identity is a consequence of an old result due to Fay for doubly branched Riemann surfaces. For $n>2$ we provide a detailed matching of certain zeros on both sides of the identity. This amounts to an elementary proof of the identity for $n=2$, while for $n\ge 3$ it gives new evidence for it. We explain why the existence of additional zeros renders the general proof difficult.
