Experimental and theoretical studies of hyperfine structures in $^{21}$Na

We measured the hyperfine structure constants, $A(3s^2S_{1/2})$ and $A(3p^2P_{1/2})$, of the neutron-deficient isotope $^{21}\text{Na}$ using CLaSsy, a setup dedicated to collinear laser spectroscopy at RAON. The hyperfine structure constants of $^{21}\text{Na}$ were measured to be $103.6(10)_{\mathrm{stat}}(9)_{\mathrm{syst}}$ MHz for $A(3p^2P_{1/2})$ and $954.9(11)_{\mathrm{stat}}(25)_{\mathrm{syst}}$ MHz for $A(3s^2S_{1/2})$. A systematic comparison with the state-of-the-art ab-initio relativistic coupled cluster calculations shows the role of higher-order correlation effects such as triple excitations in $^{21}$Na. Furthermore, the measurement demonstrates a capability of the CLaSsy setup to conduct collinear laser spectroscopy experiments with a radioactive beam.

Establishing the $^{40}$Ca$(p,p \alpha)$ reaction at 392 MeV under quasi-free scattering conditions

The $(p,p \alpha)$ reaction offers a direct means to probe preformed $\alpha$-cluster structures in nuclei under quasi-free scattering conditions. Previous studies around 100 MeV provided valuable insights into $\alpha$ clustering, but quantitative comparison with microscopic cluster wave functions remained limited due to strong distortion effects. At higher energies, the reaction mechanism becomes simpler and the distorted-wave impulse approximation (DWIA) provides a more reliable framework for quantitative analysis. In the present work, the $^{40}$Ca$(p,p\alpha)$ reaction was measured at an incident energy of 392 MeV using the high-resolution Grand Raiden and LAS spectrometers at RCNP. Despite the small cross section in this energy region, the achieved resolution allowed clear separation of the ground and excited states of the residual $^{36}$Ar nucleus, and corresponding momentum distributions were extracted. DWIA calculations using a Woods-Saxon $\alpha + ^{36}$Ar bound-state wave function yielded an experimental spectroscopic factor of $ S_{\mathrm{FAC}}^{\mathrm{WS}} = 0.51 \pm 0.05 $, consistent with the previous result at 101.5 MeV $(0.52 \pm 0.23 )$. This agreement demonstrates that the reaction mechanism is well described across a wide energy range. The present study establishes the feasibility of high-precision $(p,p\alpha)$ measurements at several hundred MeV and highlights their potential as a quantitative probe of $\alpha$ clustering in medium-mass nuclei, forming the basis for systematic studies in both stable and unstable systems.

Unbound states in 17C and p-sd shell-model interactions

Unbound states in 17C were investigated via one-neutron removal from a 18C beam at an energy of 245 MeV/nucleon on a carbon target. The energy spectrum of 17C, above the single-neutron decay threshold, was reconstructed using invariant mass spectroscopy from the measured momenta of the 16C fragment and neutron, and was found to exhibit resonances at Er=0.52(2), 0.77(2), 1.36(1), 1.91(1), 2.22(3) and 3.20(1) MeV. The resonance at Er=0.77(2) MeV [Ex=1.51(3) MeV] was provisionally assigned as the second 5/2+ state. The two resonances at Er=1.91(1) and 3.20(1) MeV [Ex=2.65(2) and 3.94(2) MeV] were identified, through comparison of the energies, cross sections and momentum distributions with shell-model and eikonal reaction calculations, as p-shell hole states with spin-parities 1/2- and 3/2-, respectively. A detailed comparison was made with the results obtained using a range of shell-model interactions. The YSOX shell-model Hamiltonian, the cross-shell part of which is based on the monopole-based universal interaction, was found to provide a very good description of the present results and those for the neighbouring odd-A carbon isotopes - in particular for the negative parity cross-shell states.
