Observation of Uniform Supercurrent Flow in Polycrystalline K-doped Ba122 by Combined Magneto-optical Imaging and Finite-element Modeling

Macroscopic current uniformity in a (Ba,K)Fe2As2 bulk sample produced by a process that demonstrated high trapped magnetic fields was evaluated through a comparative experimental and modeling approach. The bulk sample, with a well-defined square geometry, exhibited ideal roof-top patterns in magneto-optical (MO) images. Comparison of the magnetic moment, MO images, and finite element modeling results showed good agreement for the critical current density, suggesting that the supercurrent circulates uniformly throughout the sample on the order of MO resolution. These results highlight the importance of enhancing flux pinning strength and microstructural control at the submicron and grain boundary scale in iron-based superconducting polycrystalline materials.

Peak Effects Induced by Particle Irradiations in 2H-NbSe2

Various peak effects in 2H-NbSe2 single crystals induced by particle irradiations were studied. 3 MeV proton irradiation magnified the peak effect induced by order-disorder transition of vortices, where the peak field shifts from high fields to low fields with increasing irradiation dose. For the peak effect in NbSe2 with splayed columnar defects (CDs), as the splayed angle increases, peak field gradually shifts from high fields to low fields. Numerical calculations have been conducted to investigate the mechanism of the peak effect. The calculated results exhibit excellent agreement with experimental observations. Analyses of field dependence of Jc reveal the formation of non-uniform Jc flow with increasing splayed angle, which plays a crucial role in inducing the self-field peak effect in superconductors with splayed CDs. In samples with symmetric splayed CDs with respect to the c-axis generated by 800 MeV Xe and 320 MeV Au ions, coexistence of order-disorder transition-induced peak effect and self-field peak effect was observed. In the case of 320 MeV Au irradiated samples, when the splay angle is small, the two peak effects transform into a broad peak, which has similarity to the anomalous peak effect observed in iron-based superconductors. Interestingly, the broad anomalous peak effect is strongly suppressed when the external magnetic field is applied parallel to one of splayed CDs.

Effects of 3 MeV Proton Irradiation on Superconductivity and CDW in 2H-NbSe2 Single Crystals

Interplay between superconductivity and charge-density wave (CDW) in 2H-NbSe2 single crystals irradiated by 3 MeV protons is studied. Both Tc and TCDW are found to decrease monotonically with the increase in irradiation dose. This behavior is different from electron-irradiated NbSe2, where TCDW is suppressed monotonically with the increase in dose, while Tc shows an initial enhancement before it starts to decrease. We attempt to explain this difference based on the negative pressure effect which has been reported in our previous study on NbSe2 irradiated by heavy ions.

Suppression of Superconductivity in Heavy-ion Irradiated 2H-NbSe2 Caused by Negative Pressure

Effects of columnar defects created by 320 MeV Au irradiation on 2H-NbSe2 single crystals with a dose equivalent matching field up to 16 T were studied. Critical temperature is found to be suppressed almost linearly at a rate of 0.07 K/T. At the same time, the lattice parameters a and c are found to be expanded at rates of 0.016%/T and 0.030%/T, respectively. Such a lattice expansion should work as negative pressure to affect Tc. By separating the effect of heavy-ion irradiation on Tc suppression through lattice expansion and disorder, it is found that Tc is suppressed more by lattice expansion rather than by disorder.

Complex vortex-antivortex dynamics in the magnetic superconductor EuFe$_{2}$(As$_{0.7}$P$_{0.3}$)$_{2}$

We report on the investigation of the magnetic superconductor EuFe$_{2}$(As$_{0.7}$P$_{0.3}$)$_{2}$ based on muon-spin spectroscopy and ac magnetic susceptibility ($χ$) measurements. The dependence of the internal field at the muon site on temperature is indicative of a ferromagnetic ordering of Eu$^{2+}$ magnetic moments and only the conventional magnon scattering governs the longitudinal relaxation rate at low temperatures. At the same time, we observe a rich phenomenology for the imaginary component of the susceptibility $χ^{\prime\prime}$ by means of both standard ac susceptibility and a novel technique based on a microwave coplanar waveguide resonator. In particular, we detect activated trends for several features in $χ^{\prime\prime}$ over frequencies spanning ten orders of magnitude. We interpret our results in terms of the complex dynamics of vortices and antivortices influenced by the underlying structure of magnetic domains.

Fabrication of small superconducting coils using (Ba,A)Fe2As2 (A: Na, K) round wires with large critical current densities

We report the fabrication of small (Ba,A)Fe2As2 (A: Na, K) coils using 10 m-class long round wires, fabricated by powder-in-tube (PIT) method. Coils are sintered using hot-isostatic-press (HIP) technique after glass-fiber insulations are installed. Critical current (Ic) of the whole coil using (Ba,Na)Fe2As2 and (Ba,K)Fe2As2 are 60 A and 66 A under the self-field, and the generated magnetic fields at the center of the coil reach 2.6 kOe and 2.5 kOe, respectively. Furthermore, the largest transport critical current density (Jc) and Ic in (Ba,Na)Fe2As2 wires picked up from the coil reach 54 kAcm-2 and 51.8 A at T = 4.2 K under a magnetic field of 100 kOe, respectively. This value exceeds transport Jc of all previous iron-based superconducting round wires. Texturing of grains in the core of the wire due to the improvement of the wire drawing process plays a key role for the enhancement of Jc.

Trapping a magnetic field of 14.8 T using stacked coated conductors of 12 mm width

We fabricated a compact (13$\times$12$\times$12.5 mm${^3}$) trapped-field magnet by stacking 200 pieces of EuBa${_2}$Cu${_3}$O${_7}$ coated conductors with BaHfO${_3}$ nanorods as artificial pinning centers. It was magnetized by field-cooling method using a 18 T superconducting magnet, and the maximum field of 14.8 T was trapped at 10 K at a field-ramp rate of 0.1 T/min. At higher temperatures, although the trapped field was decreased, we could trap the field with much faster ramp rate. In order to understand these results, we also performed calculations of the trapped field based on $J_\mathrm{c}-H$ characteristics of the coated conductor. The calculated trapped field value was larger than the experimental value at 10 K. This discrepancy can be understood by considering the reduction of the effective size of the stacked coated conductors due to the existence of extended regions of irregular flux penetration called "flux jets".

Effects of asymmetric splayed columnar defects on the anomalous peak effect in Ba$_{0.6}$K$_{0.4}$Fe$_{2}$As$_{2}$

In order to enhance the critical current density ($J_c$) of superconductors, introduction of columnar defects (CDs) through swift-particle irradiation is effective. By dispersing the direction of CDs (splayed CDs), not only further enhancement of $J_c$ has been confirmed but also an anomalous peak effect (APE) in $J_c$ at a certain magnetic field determined by the irradiation dose was observed. It has been proposed that the APE arises from the suppression of kink motion and/or the effects of vortex entanglement in systems with splayed CDs. In this study, we measure $J_c$ properties of optimally K-doped Ba-122-type iron-based superconductor Ba$_{0.6}$K$_{0.4}$Fe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ single crystals with splayed CDs that are introduced asymmetrically with respect to the $c$-axis by irradiating 2.6 GeV U ions. We discuss the significance of the average direction of splayed CDs to the APE. We also discuss the relationship between the APE and the entanglement of vortices.

Fully gapped superconductivity without sign reversal in the topological superconductor PbTaSe$_2$

We investigate the superconducting gap function of topological superconductor PbTaSe$_2$. Temperature, magnetic field, and three-dimensional (3D) field-angle dependences of the specific heat prove that the superconductivity of PbTaSe$_2$ is fully-gapped, with two isotropic $s$-wave gaps. The pair-breaking effect is probed by systematically increasing non-magnetic disorders through H$^+$-irradiations. The superconducting transition temperature, $T_{\rm{c}}$, is found to be robust against disorders, which suggests that the pairing should be sign-preserved rather than sign-reversed.

Effects of 6 MeV proton irradiation on the vortex ensemble in BaFe$_{2}$(As$_{0.67}$P$_{0.33}$)$_2$ revealed through magnetization measurements and real-space vortex imaging

The change in vortex ensemble in BaFe$_{2}$(As$_{0.67}$P$_{0.33}$)$_2$, an isovalently doped iron-based superconductor (IBS), is studied through global magnetization measurements and single vortex imaging before and after 6 MeV proton irradiation. The field dependence of the critical current density ($J_\mathrm{c}$) is analyzed through the strong pinning model, with which the pristine sample is consistent. After the irradiation, the $J_\mathrm{c}$ aberrates from the strong pinning field dependence of $B^{-5/8}$, and evolves to a weaker $B^{-1/3}$ dependence with an anomalous two-step behavior creating a cusp like feature. The cusp coincides with the field of the local minima in the normalized relaxation rate ($S$), manifested by increased pinning due to increased intervortex interactions followed by fast vortex dynamics caused by flux activation at higher fields. Furthermore, single vortex imaging reveals that while long-range triangular correlation of the Abrikosov vortex lattice is observed in pristine samples, irradiated samples exhibit a highly disordered glassy vortex state which is more densely packed with increased pinning force. These artificial defects incorporated via proton irradiation have the same pinning effect as Co doping which not only shifts the pinning force to a higher degree but also broadens its distribution, in contrast to P doping which only broadens the pinning distribution without inducing a shift. All in all, through this investigation, we provide a systematic understanding of the pinning behavior in BaFe$_{2}$(As$_{0.67}$P$_{0.33}$)$_2$ through carefully controlling the defects in the system.

Anisotropic physical properties and large critical current density in KCa${_2}$Fe${_4}$As${_4}$F${_2}$ single crystal

We present a systematic study of electrical resistivity, Hall coefficient, magneto-optical imaging, magnetization, and STEM analyses of KCa${_2}$Fe${_4}$As${_4}$F${_2}$ single crystals. Sharp diamagnetic transition and magneto-optical imaging reveal homogeneity of single crystal and prominent Bean-like penetrations of vortices. Large anisotropy of electrical resistivity, with ${ρ_c / ρ_{ab}}$ > 100, and semiconductor-like ${ρ_c}$ suggest that the electronic state is quasi two-dimensional. Hall effect measurements indicate that KCa${_2}$Fe${_4}$As${_4}$F${_2}$ is a multiband system with holes as main carriers. Magnetization measurements reveal significantly larger J$_c$ compared with that in other iron-based superconductors with different values of J$_c$ depending on the direction of magnetic field. Origin of these J$_c$ characteristics is discussed based on microstructural observations using STEM. In addition, further enhancement of J$_c$ in KCa${_2}$Fe${_4}$As${_4}$F${_2}$ for future application is demonstrated in terms of heavy-ion irradiation.

Enhancement of critical current density in (Ba,Na)Fe2As2 round wires using high-pressure sintering

We fabricated (Ba,Na)Fe2As2 superconducting wires using the powder-in-tube method and hot isostatic pressing. By improving powder synthesis processes compared with previous studies, highly pure raw materials for the wire fabrication were obtained. The largest transport critical current density (Jc) reached 40 kAcm-2 at T = 4.2 K under a magnetic field of 100 kOe. This value exceeds not only the value of transport Jc of the previous (Ba,Na)Fe2As2 wire but also those of all iron-based superconducting round wires. Improvements of polycrystalline powder synthesis play a key role for the enhancement of Jc. Furthermore, it was clarified that higher densification by high-pressure sintering and the texturing of grains in the core of the wire due to drawing also increased Jc effectively. Advantages of (Ba,Na)Fe2As2 wires compared with (Ba,K)Fe2As2 wires are also discussed.

Large and significantly anisotropic critical current density induced by planar defects in CaKFe4As4 single crystals

Three independent components of critical current density, one for the H//c axis and the other two for the H//ab plane, have been studied in CaKFe4As4 single crystals. When the magnetic field is applied along the c axis, we observed fish-tail-like peaks in the M-H hysteresis loop, and the magnetization at higher temperatures exceeds that at lower temperatures at high fields. When the field is applied parallel to the ab plane, a dip structure is observed in the M-H hysteresis loop near the self-field. In addition, for the H//ab plane, we succeeded in separately evaluating the large and significantly anisotropic in-plane and out-of-plane Jc. Transmission electron microscopy revealed the presence of planar defects parallel to the ab plane in CaKFe4As4, which have not been observed in any other iron-based superconductors. We discuss the possible relationship between the anomalous Jc behavior and the planar defects.

Deviation from canonical collective creep behavior in Li$_{0.8}$Fe$_{0.2}$OHFeSe

We present an extensive study of the vortex dynamics in Li$_{0.8}$Fe$_{0.2}$OHFeSe single crystal, which is prepared by intercalating insulating spacer layer Li$_{0.8}$Fe$_{0.2}$OH into FeSe. Absence of fishtail effect and the crossover from elastic to plastic creep are observed similar to the parent compound FeSe. However, when we apply collective creep theory to the magnetic relaxation data, the obtained creep exponent $μ$ is found to be $\sim$ 4.1 much larger than the predicted maximum value. Besides, the elastic creep in the vortex phase diagram of Li$_{0.8}$Fe$_{0.2}$OHFeSe is found to reside only in an extremely small region. Such a large value of $μ$ and the small elastic creep region may be originated from the weakening of coupling between the vortices in neighbouring layers by elongating the layer distance. It may indicate that the vortex structure of Li$_{0.8}$Fe$_{0.2}$OHFeSe is in the crossover regime between elastic Abrikosov vortices to stacks of pancake vortices. Our study also suggests that the intercalated FeSe is a promising candidate for searching intrinsic Josephson phenomena.

Giant thermal Hall conductivity from neutral excitations in the pseudogap phase of cuprates

The nature of the pseudogap phase of cuprates remains a major puzzle. Although there are indications that this phase breaks various symmetries, there is no consensus on its fundamental nature. Although Fermi-surface, transport and thermodynamic signatures of the pseudogap phase are reminiscent of a transition into a phase with antiferromagnetic order, there is no evidence for an associated long-range magnetic order. Here we report measurements of the thermal Hall conductivity $κ_{\rm xy}$ in the normal state of four different cuprates (Nd-LSCO, Eu-LSCO, LSCO, and Bi2201) and show that a large negative $κ_{\rm xy}$ signal is a property of the pseudogap phase, appearing with the onset of that phase at the critical doping $p^*$. Since it is not due to charge carriers -- as it persists when the material becomes an insulator, at low doping -- or magnons -- as it exists in the absence of magnetic order -- or phonons -- since skew scattering is very weak, we attribute this $κ_{\rm xy}$ signal to exotic neutral excitations, presumably with spin chirality. The thermal Hall conductivity in the pseudogap phase of cuprates is reminiscent of that found in insulators with spin-liquid states. In the Mott insulator LCO, it attains the highest known magnitude of any insulator.

Field-driven transition in the Ba$_{1-x}$K$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$ superconductor with splayed columnar defects

Through 2.6 GeV U irradiations, we have induced bimodal splayed columnar defects in Ba$_{1-x}$K$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$ single crystals with splay angles, $\pm 5 ^\circ$, $\pm 10 ^\circ$, $\pm 15 ^\circ$, and $\pm 20 ^\circ$. Critical current densities through magnetization measurements were carefully evaluated, where a splay angle of $\pm 5 ^\circ$ brought about the highest $J_\mathrm{c}$. Mageto-optical images close to $T_\mathrm{c}$ indicates highly anisotropic discontinuity lines in the remnant state, and with anisotropy increasing with greater splay angles. Moreover, amongst those with splayed columnar defects, anomalous non-monotonic field dependences of $J_\mathrm{c}$ and $S$ with an extrema at some fraction of the matching field are observed. We discuss that such $J_\mathrm{c}$ enhancement arises from a field-driven coupling transition in which intervortex interactions reorganize the vortex structure to be accommodated into columnar defects, thereby increasing pinning at higher fields.

Symmetry-unprotected nodes or gap minima in $s_{++}$ state of FeSe single crystal

We report the study on superconducting pairing mechanism of FeSe via the pair-breaking effects induced by H$^+$-irradiation combined with low-temperature specific heat measurements. A multi-gap structure with nodes or gap minima is suggested in a clean FeSe by the specific heat results. The suppression of critical temperature $T_c$ with increasing the defect density manifests a two-step behavior. When the increase in the residual resistivity is small, $Δρ_0$ $<$ $\sim$4.5 $μΩ$cm, $T_c$ is gradually suppressed with increasing the density of scattering centers, suggesting the presence of symmetry-unprotected nodes or gap minima. However, for $Δρ_0$ $>$ $\sim$4.5 $μΩ$cm, $T_c$ is almost independent of the scattering, which indicates that the nodes or gap minima are lifted and the order parameter becomes almost isotropic without sign change. Thus, the superconductivity in FeSe is found to be realized in symmetry-unprotected nodal or highly anisotropic $s_{++}$ state.

Exfoliation and van der Waals heterostructure assembly of intercalated ferromagnet Cr1/3TaS2

Ferromagnetic van der Waals (vdW) materials are in demand for spintronic devices with all-two-dimensional-materials heterostructures. Here, we demonstrate mechanical exfoliation of magnetic-atom-intercalated transition metal dichalcogenide Cr1/3TaS2 from its bulk crystal; previously such intercalated materials were thought difficult to exfoliate. Magnetotransport in exfoliated tens-of-nanometres-thick flakes revealed ferromagnetic ordering below its Curie temperature TC ~ 110 K as well as strong in-plane magnetic anisotropy; these are identical to its bulk properties. Further, van der Waals heterostructure assembly of Cr1/3TaS2 with another intercalated ferromagnet Fe1/4TaS2 is demonstrated using a dry-transfer method. The fabricated heterojunction composed of Cr1/3TaS2 and Fe1/4TaS2 with a native Ta2O5 oxide tunnel barrier in between exhibits tunnel magnetoresistance (TMR), revealing possible spin injection and detection with these exfoliatable ferromagnetic materials through the vdW junction.
