Probing Hairy Kerr Black Holes through Quasi-Periodic Oscillations I: A study based on the kinematic models

Black holes endowed with nontrivial scalar or matter fields, known as hairy black holes, possess additional parameters beyond mass, charge, and spin, leading to richer phenomenology. Constraining their parameter space is therefore essential, particularly in view of current electromagnetic and gravitational-wave observations. In this work, we study rotating hairy black hole solutions inspired by the gravitational decoupling method, which satisfy the Einstein field equations with a conserved energy-momentum tensor obeying the strong energy conditions. We explore in detail the horizon structure of such black holes and report for the first time certain unique features not observed in Kerr black holes. We examine how the hair parameters influence the fundamental frequencies governing particle motion in the hairy Kerr spacetime and compare these effects with the Kerr case. Since theoretical models of high-frequency quasi-periodic oscillations (HFQPOs) are directly linked to these fundamental frequencies, this provides a powerful observational probe of hairy black holes. By confronting several kinematic HFQPO models with observations from six black hole sources, we report that for most sources, the HFQPO data at the current level of precision cannot distinguish between the Kerr and hairy Kerr scenarios. However, based on agreement with previous spin estimates, our analysis provides a systematic framework to assess the relative suitability of different HFQPO models for each source. Notably, even with current observational precision, we find that both the Relativistic Precession Model and the Tidal Disruption Model appear unsuitable for the sources GRO J1655-40 and GRS 1915+105. The broader implications of these findings are discussed.

Quasi-normal mode of dyonic hairy black hole and its interplay with phase transitions

We study the dynamical stability of hairy dyonic black holes in the Einstein-Maxwell-scalar gravity system against the massless scalar field perturbation. We numerically obtain the corresponding quasinormal modes (QNMs) using the series solution and shooting methods for various black hole parameters. We find that the numerical values obtained from these two methods agree well with each other. The imaginary part of the QNM is always negative, indicating the stability of the dyonic hairy black hole against the scalar perturbation. We find that the decay and oscillatory modes of the scalar field perturbation increase linearly with the horizon radius for large black holes. We thoroughly investigate the behaviour of QNMs for different values of black hole parameters, including the electric charge, magnetic charge, horizon radius and hairy parameter, etc. Moreover, we also analyse the QNM near the small/large black hole phase transition and find that the nature of the QNMs is different for large and small black hole phases, suggesting QNMs as the possible probe of black hole phase transition.

Analytic three-dimensional primary hair charged black holes and thermodynamics

We present and discuss new families of primary hair charged black hole solutions in asymptotically anti-de Sitter space in three dimensions. The coupled Einstein-Maxwell-scalar gravity system, that carries the coupling $f(ϕ)$ between the scalar and Maxwell fields is solved, and exact hairy black hole solutions are obtained analytically. The hairy solutions are obtained for three different profiles of the coupling function: (i) $f(ϕ)=1$, corresponding to no direct coupling between the scalar and Maxwell fields, (ii) $f(ϕ)=e^{-ϕ}$, and (iii) $f(ϕ)=e^{-ϕ^2/2}$; corresponding to non-minimal coupling between them. For all these couplings the scalar field and curvature scalars are regular everywhere outside the horizon. We analyze the thermodynamics of the hairy black hole and find drastic changes in its thermodynamic structure due to the scalar field. For $f(ϕ)=1$, there exists a critical value of the hairy parameter above which the charged hairy black hole exhibits the Hawking/Page phase transition, whereas no such phase transition occurs below this critical value. Similarly, for $f(ϕ)=e^{-ϕ}$ and $f(ϕ)=e^{-ϕ^2/2}$, the hairy solution exhibits a small/large black hole phase transition for above critical values of the hairy parameter. Interestingly, for these couplings, the thermodynamic phase diagram of three-dimensional hairy charged black holes resembles that of a higher-dimensional RN-AdS black hole, albeit with two second-order critical points.

Analytic topological hairy dyonic black holes and thermodynamics

We present and discuss a new family of topological hairy dyonic black hole solutions in asymptotically anti-de Sitter (AdS) space. The coupled Einstein-Maxwell-Scalar gravity system, that carries both the electric and magnetic charges is solved, and exact hairy dyonic black hole solutions are obtained analytically. The scalar field profiles that give rise to such black hole solutions are regular everywhere. The hairy solutions are obtained for planar, spherical, and hyperbolic horizon topologies. In addition, analytic expressions of regularized action, stress tensor, conserved charges, and free energies are obtained. We further comment on different prescriptions for computing the black hole mass with hairy backgrounds. We analyze the thermodynamics of these hairy dyonic black holes in canonical and grand canonical ensembles, and we find that both electric and magnetic charges have a constructive effect on the stability of the hairy solution. For the case of planar and hyperbolic horizons, we find thermodynamically stable hairy black holes which are favoured at low temperatures compared to the non-hairy counterparts. We further find that, for a spherical hairy dyonic black hole, the thermodynamic phase diagram resembles to that of a Van der Waals fluid not only in canonical but also in the grand canonical ensemble.

Exact topological charged hairy black holes in AdS Space in $D$-dimensions

We present a new family of topological charged hairy black hole solutions in asymptotically AdS space in $D$-dimensions. We solve the coupled Einstein-Maxwell-Scalar gravity system and obtain exact charged hairy black hole solutions with planar, spherical and hyperbolic horizon topologies. The scalar field is regular everywhere. We discuss the thermodynamics of the hairy black hole and find drastic changes in its thermodynamic structure due to the scalar field. For the case of planar and spherical horizons, we find charged hairy/RN-AdS black hole phase transition, with thermodynamically preferred and stable charged hairy phases at low temperature. For the case of hyperbolic horizon, no such transition occurs and RN-AdS black holes are always thermodynamically favoured.
