LADDER: Revisiting the Cosmic Distance Ladder with Deep Learning Approaches and Exploring its Applications

We investigate the prospect of reconstructing the ''cosmic distance ladder'' of the Universe using a novel deep learning framework called LADDER - Learning Algorithm for Deep Distance Estimation and Reconstruction. LADDER is trained on the apparent magnitude data from the Pantheon Type Ia supernovae compilation, incorporating the full covariance information among data points, to produce predictions along with corresponding errors. After employing several validation tests with a number of deep learning models, we pick LADDER as the best performing one. We then demonstrate applications of our method in the cosmological context, including serving as a model-independent tool for consistency checks for other datasets like baryon acoustic oscillations, calibration of high-redshift datasets such as gamma ray bursts, and use as a model-independent mock catalog generator for future probes. Our analysis advocates for careful consideration of machine learning techniques applied to cosmological contexts.

Post-inflationary Leptogenesis and Dark Matter production: Metric versus Palatini formalism

We investigate production of non-thermal dark matter particles and heavy sterile neutrinos from inflaton during the reheating era, which is preceded by a slow-roll inflationary epoch with a quartic potential and non-minimal coupling ($ξ$) between inflaton and gravity. We compare our analysis between metric and Palatini formalism. For the latter, the tensor-to-scalar ratio, r, decreases with $ξ$. We find that for $ξ=0.5$ and number of $e$-folds $\sim 60$, $r$ can be as small as $\sim {\cal O}\left(10^{-3}\right)$ which may be validated at future reaches of upcoming CMB observation such as CMB-S4 etc. We identify the permissible range of Yukawa coupling $y_χ$ between inflaton and fermionic DM $χ$, to be ${\cal O}\left(10^{-3.5}\right)\gtrsim y_χ\gtrsim {\cal O}\left(10^{-20}\right)$ for metric formalism and ${\cal O}\left(10^{-4}\right)\gtrsim y_χ\gtrsim {\cal O}\left(10^{-11}\right)$ for Palatini formalism which is consistent with current PLANCK data and also within the reach of future CMB experiments. For the scenario of leptogenesis via the decay of sterile neutrinos produced from inflaton decay, we also investigate the parameter space involving heavy neutrino mass $M_{N_1}$ and Yukawa coupling $y_{N_1}$ of sterile neutrino with inflaton, which are consistent with current CMB data and successful generation of the observed baryon asymmetry of the universe via leptogenesis. In contrast to metric formalism, in the case of Palatini formalism, for successful leptogenesis to occur, we find that $y_{N_1}$ has a very narrow allowable range and is severely constrained from the consistency with CMB predictions.

Role of Future SNIa Data from Rubin LSST in Reinvestigating Cosmological Models

We study how future Type-Ia supernovae (SNIa) standard candles detected by the Vera C. Rubin Observatory (LSST) can constrain some cosmological models. We use a realistic three-year SNIa simulated dataset generated by the LSST Dark Energy Science Collaboration (DESC) Time Domain pipeline, which includes a mix of spectroscopic and photometrically identified candidates. We combine this data with Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) and Baryon Acoustic Oscillation (BAO) measurements to estimate the dark energy model parameters for two models -- the baseline $Λ$CDM and Chevallier-Polarski-Linder (CPL) dark energy parametrization. We compare them with the current constraints obtained from joint analysis of the latest real data from the Pantheon SNIa compilation, CMB from Planck 2018 and BAO. Our analysis finds tighter constraints on the model parameters along with a significant reduction of correlation between $H_0$ and $σ_{8,0}$. We find that LSST is expected to significantly improve upon the existing SNIa data in the critical analysis of cosmological models.

Revisiting coupled CDM-massive neutrino perturbations in diverse cosmological backgrounds

Massive neutrinos are well-known to cause a characteristic suppression in the growth of structures at scales below the neutrino free-streaming length. A detailed understanding of this suppression is essential in the era of precision cosmology we are entering into, enabling us to better constrain the total neutrino mass and possibly probe (beyond)-$Λ$CDM cosmological model(s). Instead of the usual N-body simulation or Boltzmann solver, in this article we consider a two-fluid framework at the linear scales, where the neutrino fluid perturbations are coupled to the CDM (+ baryon) fluid via gravity at redshifts of interest. Treating the neutrino mass fraction $f_ν$ as a perturbative parameter, we find solutions to the system with redshift-dependent neutrino free-streaming length in $Λ$CDM background via two separate approaches. The perturbative scale-dependent solution is shown to be in excellent agreement with numerical solution of the two-fluid equations valid to all orders in $f_ν$, and also agrees with results from {\texttt{CLASS}} to a good accuracy. We further generalize the framework to incorporate different evolving dark energy backgrounds and found sub-percent level differences in the suppression, all of which lie within the observational uncertainty of BOSS-like surveys. We also present a brief discussion on the prospects of the current analysis in the context of upcoming missions.

Confronting global 21-cm signal with $\mathbb{Z}_3$ symmetric dark matter models

While the $\mathbb{Z}_3$ symmetric dark matter models have shown tremendous prospects in addressing a number of (astro-)particle physics problems, they can leave interesting imprints on cosmological observations as well. We consider two such promising models: semi-annihilating dark matter (SADM) and Co-SIMP $2\rightarrow 3$ interaction, and investigate their effects on the global 21-cm signal. SADM alone cannot address the EDGES dip but can perform better with the aid of an excess radio background, whereas Co-SIMP can naturally explain the EDGES absorption feature by virtue of an intrinsic cooling effect without invoking any such excess radiation. Hence, the latter model turns out to be a rare model within the domain of CDM, that uses leptophilic interaction to achieve the EDGES dip. Further, keeping in mind the ongoing debate between EDGES and SARAS 3 on the global 21-cm signal, we demonstrate that our chosen models can still remain viable in this context, even if the EDGES data requires reassessment in future. We then extend our investigation to possible reflections on the Dark Ages, followed by a consistency check with the CMB and BAO observations via Planck 2018(+BAO) datasets. This work thus presents a compelling case of exploring these interesting particle physics models in the light of different cosmological observations.

Reconstructing the Hubble parameter with future Gravitational Wave missions using Machine Learning

We study the prospects of Gaussian processes (GP), a machine learning (ML) algorithm, as a tool to reconstruct the Hubble parameter $H(z)$ with two upcoming gravitational wave missions, namely the evolved Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (eLISA) and the Einstein Telescope (ET). Assuming various background cosmological models, the Hubble parameter has been reconstructed in a non-parametric manner with the help of GP using realistically generated catalogs for each mission. The effects of early-time and late-time priors on the reconstruction of $H(z)$, and hence on the Hubble constant ($H_0$), have also been focused on separately. Our analysis reveals that GP is quite robust in reconstructing the expansion history of the Universe within the observational window of the specific missions under consideration. We further confirm that both eLISA and ET would be able to provide constraints on $H(z)$ and $H_0$ which would be competitive to those inferred from current datasets. In particular, we observe that an eLISA run of $\sim10$-year duration with $\sim80$ detected bright siren events would be able to constrain $H_0$ as good as a $\sim3$-year ET run assuming $\sim 1000$ bright siren event detections. Further improvement in precision is expected for longer eLISA mission durations such as a $\sim15$-year time-frame having $\sim120$ events. Lastly, we discuss the possible role of these future gravitational wave missions in addressing the Hubble tension, for each model, on a case-by-case basis.

Imprints of dark matter-massive neutrino interaction in upcoming post-reionization and galaxy surveys

We explore possible signatures of the interaction between dark matter (DM) and massive neutrinos during the post-reionization epoch. Using both Fisher matrix forecast analysis and Markov Chain Monte-Carlo (MCMC) simulation, we conduct a thorough investigation of the constraints and imprints of the scenario on the upcoming post-reionization and galaxy surveys. Our investigation focuses on two key parameters: the strength of the DM-massive neutrino interaction ($u$) and the total neutrino mass ($M_{\rm tot}$), on top of the usual 6 cosmological parameters. We utilize future 21-cm intensity mapping, galaxy clustering as well as cosmic shear observations in order to investigate the possible constraints of these parameters in the future observations: Square Kilometre Array (SKA1 and SKA2) and Euclid, taking both conservative and realistic approaches. All these missions show promise in constraining both the parameters $u$ and $M_{\rm tot}$ by few orders compared to the current constraints from Planck18 (SKA2 performing the best among them). Although we do not find much improvement in $H_0$ and $σ_8$ tensions from our forecast analysis, SKA2 constrains them better in conservative approach. We further perform a brief investigation of the prospects of some of the next generation Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) missions in combinations with LSS experiments in improving the constraints. Our analysis reveals that both SKA2 and CMB-S4 + Euclid + SKA1 IM2 combination will put the strongest bounds on the model parameters.

Constraints on Dark Matter-Neutrino Interaction from 21-cm Cosmology and Forecasts on SKA1-Low

In this article, we have done a thorough investigation of the possible effects of interaction between dark matter (DM) and neutrinos on reionization history. We have constrained the interaction strength using 21 cm Cosmology and found out possible deviations from standard, non-interacting $Λ$CDM scenario. Comparing the results with the existing constraints from present cosmological observations reveals that 21 cm observations are more competent to constrain the interaction strength by a few orders of magnitude. We have also searched for prospects of detecting any such interaction in the upcoming 21 cm mission SKA1-Low by doing a forecast analysis and error estimation.

A thorough investigation of the prospects of eLISA in addressing the Hubble tension: Fisher Forecast, MCMC and Machine Learning

We carry out an in-depth analysis of the capability of the upcoming space-based gravitational wave mission eLISA in addressing the Hubble tension, with a primary focus on observations at intermediate redshifts ($3<z<8$). We consider six different parametrizations representing different classes of cosmological models, which we constrain using the latest datasets of cosmic microwave background (CMB), baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO), and type Ia supernovae (SNIa) observations, in order to find out the up-to-date tensions with direct measurement data. Subsequently, these constraints are used as fiducials to construct mock catalogs for eLISA. We then employ Fisher analysis to forecast the future performance of each model in the context of eLISA. We further implement traditional Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) to estimate the parameters from the simulated catalogs. Finally, we utilize Gaussian Processes (GP), a machine learning algorithm, for reconstructing the Hubble parameter directly from simulated data. Based on our analysis, we present a thorough comparison of the three methods as forecasting tools. Our Fisher analysis confirms that eLISA would constrain the Hubble constant ($H_0$) at the sub-percent level. MCMC/GP results predict reduced tensions for models/fiducials which are currently harder to reconcile with direct measurements of $H_0$, whereas no significant change occurs for models/fiducials at lesser tensions with the latter. This feature warrants further investigation in this direction.

Near-inflection point inflation and production of dark matter during reheating

We study slow roll single field inflationary scenario and the production of non-thermal fermionic dark matter, together with standard model Higgs, during reheating. For the inflationary scenario, we have considered two models of polynomial potential - one is symmetric about the origin and another one is not. We fix the coefficients of the potential from the current Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) data from Planck/Bicep. Next, we explore the allowed parameter space on the coupling $(y_χ)$ with inflaton and mass $(m_χ)$ of dark matter (DM) particles $(χ)$ produced during reheating and satisfying CMB and several other cosmological constraints.

Investigating the Constraints on Primordial Features with Future Cosmic Microwave Background and Galaxy Surveys

In this article, we do a thorough investigation of the competency of the forthcoming Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) and Galaxy surveys in probing the features in the primordial power spectrum. Primordial features are specific model-dependent corrections on top of the standard power-law inflationary power spectrum; the functional form being given by different inflationary scenarios. Signature of any significant departure from the feature-less power spectrum will enable us to decipher the intricacies of the inflationary Universe. Here, we delve into three major yet distinct features, namely, Bump feature, Sharp feature signal, and Resonance feature signal. To analyse the features, we adopt a specific template for each feature model. We estimate the possible constraints on the feature parameters by employing Fisher matrix forecast analysis for the upcoming CMB missions such as CMB-S4, CORE-M5, LiteBIRD, PICO conjointly with DESI, and EUCLID galaxy surveys. To this end, we make use of four distinct observations to forecast on the bounds on the model parameters, namely, CMB, Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO), Galaxy Clustering and Gravitational Weak Lensing or Cosmic Shear and their permissible synergy. For large scale structure (LSS) information, we consider different upper limits of scale for different redshifts for the purpose of circumventing the propagation of the errors stemming from the uncertainties on nonlinear scales into the constraints on the feature parameters. A comparative analysis of all three features has been done to estimate relative capabilities of these upcoming observations in shedding light on this crucial aspect of precision cosmology.

Inflection-point Inflation and Dark Matter Redux

We investigate for viable models of inflation that can successfully produce dark matter (DM) from inflaton decay process, satisfying all the constraints from Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) and from some other observations. In particular, we analyze near-inflection-point small field inflationary scenario with non-thermal production of fermionic DM from the decaying inflaton field during the reheating era. To this end, we propose two different models of inflation with polynomial potential. The potential of Model I contains terms proportional to linear, quadratic, and quartic in inflaton; whereas in Model II, the potential contains only even power of inflaton and the highest term is sextic in inflaton. For both the models, we find out possible constraints on the model parameters which lead to proper inflationary parameters from CMB data with a very small tensor-to-scalar ratio, as expected from a small-field model. With the allowed parameter space from CMB, we then search for satisfactory relic abundance for DM, that can be produced from inflaton via reheating, to match with the present-day cold dark matter (CDM) relic density for the parameter spaces of the DM $χ$ mass and Yukawa couplings in the range $10^{-9} \gtrsim y_χ \gtrsim 10^{-15}$ and $10^3 \text{GeV} \lesssim m_χ \lesssim 10^9 \text{GeV}$. The DM relic is associated with the inflection-points in each model via maximum temperature reached in the early universe during its production. Finally, we find out allowed parameter space coming out of combined constraints from stability analysis for both SM Higgs and DM decays from inflaton as well as from BBN and Lyman-$α$ bounds.

Hilltop inflation and generation of helical magnetic field

Primordial magnetic field generated in the inflationary era can act as a viable source for the present day intergalactic magnetic field of sufficient strength. We present a fundamental origin for such a primordial generation of the magnetic field, namely through anomaly cancellation of $U(1)$ gauge field in quantum electrodynamics in the context of hilltop inflation. We have analysed at length the power spectrum of the magnetic field, thus generated, which turns out to be helical in nature. We have also found that magnetic power spectrum has significant scale-dependence giving rise to a non-trivial magnetic spectral index, a key feature of this model. Interestingly, there exists a large parameter space, where magnetic field of significant strength can be produced.

Non-canonical Conformal Attractors for Single Field Inflation

We extend the idea of conformal attractors in inflation to non-canonical sectors by developing a non-canonical conformally invariant theory from two different approaches. In the first approach, namely, ${\cal N}=1$ supergravity, the construction is more or less phenomenological, where the non-canonical kinetic sector is derived from a particular form of the Kähler potential respecting shift symmetry. In the second approach i.e., superconformal theory, we derive the form of the Lagrangian from a superconformal action and it turns out to be exactly of the same form as in the first approach. Conformal breaking of these theories results in a new class of non-canonical models which can govern inflation with modulated shape of the T-models. We further employ this framework to explore inflationary phenomenology with a representative example and show how the form of the Kähler potential can possibly be constrained in non-canonical models using the latest confidence contour in the $n_s-r$ plane given by recent Planck and BICEP/Keck results.

Shedding Light on Dark Matter and Neutrino Interactions from Cosmology

In $\rmΛ$CDM cosmology, Dark Matter (DM) and neutrinos are assumed to be non-interacting. However, it is possible to have scenarios, where DM-neutrino interaction may be present, leading to scattering of DM with neutrinos and annihilation of DM into neutrinos. We investigate the viability of such scenarios in the light of cosmological data by making use of the Planck 2018 dataset (high-l TT+TE+EE, low-l TT, low-l EE) and constrain these processes in the light of the same. We also discuss a viable particle DM model where DM-neutrino interaction is present, and map the constraints obtained to the parameter space of the model.

EFT of Inflation: Reflections on CMB and Forecasts on LSS Surveys

We investigate the possibility of constraining parameters of Effective Field Theory (EFT) of inflation with upcoming Large Scale Structure (LSS) surveys in order to have a better understanding of inflationary dynamics. With the development of the construction algorithm of EFT, we arrive at a properly truncated action for the entire scenario. Using this, we compute the two-point correlation function for quantum fluctuations from Goldstone modes and related inflationary observables in terms of coefficients of relevant EFT operators. We then perform Fisher matrix forecast analysis to estimate the possible error bars on the parameters of EFT as well as on the inflationary parameters using two upcoming LSS surveys, namely, LSST and EUCLID.

Prospects of probing dark energy with eLISA: Standard versus null diagnostics

Gravitational waves from supermassive black hole binary mergers along with an electromagnetic counterpart have the potential to shed `light' on the nature of dark energy in the intermediate redshift regime. Accurate measurement of dark energy parameters at intermediate redshift is extremely essential to improve our understanding of dark energy, and to possibly resolve a couple of tensions involving cosmological parameters. We present a Fisher matrix forecast analysis in the context of eLISA to predict the errors for three different cases: the non-interacting dark energy with constant and evolving equation of state (EoS), and the interacting dark sectors with a generalized parametrization. In all three cases, we perform the analysis for two separate formalisms, namely, the standard EoS formalism and the \textit{Om} parametrization which is a model-independent null diagnostic for a wide range of fiducial values in both phantom and non-phantom regions, to make a comparative analysis between the prospects of these two diagnostics in eLISA. Our analysis reveals that it is wiser and more effective to probe the null diagnostic instead of the standard EoS parameters for any possible signature of dark energy at intermediate redshift measurements like eLISA.

Enhanced tensor non-Gaussianities in presence of a source

We address the possibility of having an enhanced signal for tensor non-Gaussianities in presence of a source, as a signature of Primordial Gravitational Waves. We employ a nearly model-independent framework based on Effective Field Theory of inflation and compute tensor non-Gaussianities therefrom sourced by particle production during (p)reheating to arrive at an enhanced signal strength. We obtain the model-independent non-linearity parameters and also find that squeezed limit bispectra are more enhanced than equilateral limit.
