The Berry phase in inflationary cosmology

We derive an analogue of the Berry phase associated with inflationary cosmological perturbations of quantum mechanical origin by obtaining the corresponding wavefunction. We have further shown that cosmological Berry phase can be completely envisioned through the observable parameters, viz. spectral indices. Finally, physical significance of this phase is discussed from the point of view of theoretical and observational aspects with some possible consequences of this quantity in inflationary cosmology.

Brane inflation: A field theory approach in background supergravity

We propose a model of inflation in the framework of brane cosmology driven by background supergravity. Starting from bulk supergravity we construct the inflaton potential on the brane and employ it to investigate for the consequences to inflationary paradigm. To this end, we derive the expressions for the important parameters in brane inflation, which are somewhat different from their counterparts in standard cosmology, using the one loop radiative corrected potential. We further estimate the observable parameters and find them to fit well with recent observational data. We have studied extensively reheating phenomenology, which explains the thermal history of the universe and leptogenesis through the production of thermal gravitino pertaining to the particle physics phenomenology of the early universe.

Fourth level MSSM inflation from new flat directions

We propose a model of inflation driven by minimal extension of SUSY, commonly known as MSSM. Starting from gauge invariant flat directions in the n = 4 level comprising of QQQL,QuQd,QuLe and uude, we construct the inflaton potential and employ it to investigate for its consequences around the saddle point arising from the non-vanishing fourth derivative of the original potential. To this end, we derive the expressions for the important parameters in MSSM inflation using the loop corrected potential. We further estimate the observable parameters and find them to fit well with recent observational data from WMAP7 by using the code CAMB. We also explore the possibility of primordial black hole formation from our model. Finally, we analyze one loop RGE and compute different phenomenological parameters which could be precisely determined in LHC or future Linear Colliders.

Confronting quasi-exponential inflation with WMAP seven

We confront quasi-exponential models of inflation with WMAP seven years dataset using Hamilton Jacobi formalism. With a phenomenological Hubble parameter, representing quasi exponential inflation, we develop the formalism and subject the analysis to confrontation with WMAP seven using the publicly available code CAMB. The observable parameters are found to fair extremely well with WMAP seven. We also obtain a ratio of tensor to scalar amplitudes which may be detectable in PLANCK.

A semi-analytical approach to perturbations in mutated hilltop inflation

We study cosmological perturbations and observational aspects for mutated hilltop model of inflation. Employing mostly analytical treatment, we evaluate observable parameters during inflation as well as post-inflationary perturbations. This further leads to exploring observational aspects related to Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) radiation. This semi-analytical treatment reduces complications related to numerical computation to some extent for studying the different phenomena related to CMB angular power spectrum for mutated hilltop inflation.

Reheating and leptogenesis in a SUGRA inspired brane inflation

We have studied extensively phenomenological implications in a specific model of brane inflation driven by background supergravity, via thermal history of the universe and leptogenesis pertaining to the particle physics phenomenology of the early universe. Using the one loop corrected inflationary potential we have investigated for the analytical expression as well as the numerical estimation for brane reheating temperature for standard model particles. This results in some novel features of reheating from this type of inflation which have serious implications in the production of heavy Majorana neutrinos needed for leptogenesis through the reheating temperature. We have also derived the expressions for the gravitino abundance during reheating and radiation dominated era. We have further estimated different parameters at the epoch of phase transition and revealed their salient features. At the end we have explicitly given an estimate of the amount of CP violation through the effective CP phase which is related to baryon asymmetry as well as gravitino dark matter abundance.

Generalized particle dynamics in anti de Sitter spaces: A source for dark energy

We consider the generalized particle dynamics, proposed by us, in brane world formalisms for an asymptotically anti de Sitter background. The present framework results in a new model that accounts for the late acceleration of the universe. An effective Dark Energy equation of state, exhibiting a phantom like behaviour, is generated. The model is derived by embedding the physical FRW universe in a $(4+1)$-dimensional effective space-time, induced by the generalized particle dynamics. We corroborate our results with present day observed cosmological parameters.

Mutated Hilltop Inflation : A Natural Choice for Early Universe

We propose a model of inflation with a suitable potential for a single scalar field which falls in the wide class of hilltop inflation. We derive the analytical expressions for most of the physical quantities related to inflation and show that all of them represent the true behavior as required from a model of inflation. We further subject the results to observational verification by formulating the theory of perturbations based on our model followed by an estimation for the values of those observable parameters. Our model is found to be in excellent agreement with observational data. Thus, the features related to the model leads us to infer that this type of hilltop inflation may be a natural choice for explaining the early universe.

A critical analysis of thermodynamic properties of braneworld black holes in anti-de Sitter spacetime

Thermodynamic properties of Schwarzschild-Anti de-Sitter (Sch-AdS) and Reissner-Nordström-Anti de-Sitter (RN-AdS) blackholes in 3+1 dimensional spacetime are studied critically with special reference to the warped braneworld black holes with non-vanishing cosmological constant on the brane. Explicit dependence of the thermodynamic variables on the parameters of the braneworld model such as the induced three brane cosmological constant as well as the bulk cosmological constant have been determined. Hawking-Page phase transition has been discussed for both Sch-AdS and RN-AdS black holes. At the phase transition point it is shown that the parameters mass, charge and cosmological constant get correlated by an inequality relation which originates from the background warped geometry model.

Bouncing Braneworld with Born-Infeld and Gauss-Bonnet

We show the existence of some bouncing cosmological solutions in the braneworld scenario. More specifically, we consider a dynamical three-brane in the background of Born-Infeld and electrically charged Gauss-Bonnet black hole. We find that, in certain range of parameter space, the brane universe, at least classically, never shrinks to a zero size, resulting in a singularity-free cosmology within the classical domain.

Generalized particle dynamics: modifying the motion of particles and branes

We construct a generalized dynamics for particles moving in a symmetric space-time, i.e. a space-time admitting one or more Killing vectors. The generalization implies that the effective mass of particles becomes dynamical. We apply this generalized dynamics to the motion of test particles in a static, spherically symmetric metric. A significant consequence of the new framework is to generate an effective negative pressure on a cosmological surface whose expansion is manifest by the particle trajectory via embedding geometry \cite{bwg,embed2,embed,pal}. This formalism thus may give rise to a source for dark energy in modeling the late accelerating universe.

From inflation to late acceleration: A new cosmological paradigm

A new idea of deriving a cosmological term from an underlying theory has been proposed in order to explain the expansion history of the universe. We obtain the scale factor with this derived cosmological term and demonstrate that it reflects all the characteristics of the expanding universe in different era so as to result in a transition from inflation to late acceleration through intermediate decelerating phases by this single entity. We further discuss certain observational aspects of this paradigm.

de Sitter branes with a bulk scalar

We propose new braneworld models arising from a scalar field in the bulk. In these examples, the induced on--brane line element is de Sitter (or anti de Sitter) and the bulk (five dimensional) Einstein equations can be exactly solved to obtain warped spacetimes. The solutions thus derived are single and two-brane models -- one with {\em thin} branes while the other one of the {\em thick} variety. The field profiles and the potentials are obtained and analysed for each case. We note that for the {\em thick} brane scenario the field profile resembles a kink, whereas for one or more {\em thin} branes, it is finite and bounded in the domain of the extra dimension. We have also addressed the localisation of gravity and other matter fields on the brane for these braneworld models.

Cosmological consequences of generalised RS II braneworlds

We discuss certain features of cosmology in a generalised RS II braneworld scenario. In this scenario, the bulk is given by a Schwarzschild-anti de Sitter or a Vaidya-anti de Sitter black hole in which an FRW brane is consistently embedded, resulting in modifications of the 4-dimensional Friedmann equations. We analyse how the scenario can be visualised and discuss the significance of each term in these modified equations both for early time and for late time cosmology. We further analyse the perturbation equations, based on Newtonian as well as relativistic perturbations and show that the scenario has the potentiality to explain structure formation by the ``Weyl fluid'' arising from embedding geometry. The results thus obtained are confronted with observations as well.

Brane cosmology, Weyl fluid, and density perturbations

We develop a technique to study relativistic perturbations in the generalised brane cosmological scenario, which is a generalisation of the multi-fluid cosmological perturbations to brane cosmology. The novelty of the technique lies in the inclusion of a radiative bulk which is responsible for bulk-brane energy exchange, and in turn, modifies the standard perturbative analysis to a great extent. The analysis involves a geometric fluid -- called the Weyl fluid -- whose nature and role have been studied extensively both for the empty bulk and the radiative bulk scenario. Subsequently, we find that this Weyl fluid can be a possible geometric candidate for dark matter in this generalised brane cosmological framework.

Gravitational lensing in braneworld gravity: formalism and applications

In this article, we develop a formalism which is different from the standard lensing scenario and is necessary for understanding lensing by gravitational fields which arise as solutions of the effective Einstein equations on the brane. We obtain general expressions for measurable quantities such as time delay, deflection angle, Einstein ring and magnification. Subsequently, we estimate the deviations (relative to the standard lensing scenario) in the abovementioned quantities by considering the line elements for clusters and spiral galaxies obtained by solving the effective Einstein equations on the brane. Our analysis reveals that gravitational lensing can be a useful tool for testing braneworld gravity as well as the existence of extra dimensions.

Braneworld gravitational collapse from a radiative bulk

We study the fate of a collapsing star on the brane in a generalized braneworld gravity with bulk matter. Specifically, we investigate for the possibility of having a static exterior for a collapsing star in the radiative bulk scenario. Here, the nonlocal correction due to bulk matter is manifest in an induced mass that adds up to the physical mass of the star resulting in an effective mass. A Schwarzschild solution for the exterior in terms of this effective mass is obtained, which reveals that even if the star exchanges energy with the bulk, the exterior may appear to be static to a braneworld observer located outside the collapsing region. The possible explanation of the situation from the discussion on the role of bulk matter is provided. The nature of bulk matter and the corresponding bulk geometry have also been obtained and analyzed, which gives a complete picture of both brane and bulk viewpoints.
