Reduction of twisted generalized Kähler structure

We show that our earlier work in \cite{LT05} extends to the twisted case, that is, we defined a notion of moment map and reduction in both twisted generalized complex geometry and twisted generalized Kähler geometry.

Symmetries in generalized Kähler geometry

We define the notion of a moment map and reduction in both generalized complex geometry and generalized Kähler geometry. As an application, we give very simple explicit constructions of bi-Hermitian structures on $\C¶^n$, Hirzebruch surfaces, the blow up of $\CP^2$ at arbitrarily many points, and other toric varieties, as well as complex Grassmannians.

The Gromov width of complex Grassmannians

We show that the Gromov width of the Grassmannian of complex k-planes in C^n is equal to one when the symplectic form is normalized so that it generates the integral cohomology in degree 2. We deduce the lower bound from more general results. For example, if a compact manifold N with an integral symplectic form omega admits a Hamiltonian circle action with a fixed point p such that all the isotropy weights at p are equal to one, then the Gromov width of (N,omega) is at least one. We use holomorphic techniques to prove the upper bound.

Topological properties of Hamiltonian circle actions

This paper studies Hamiltonian circle actions, i.e. circle subgroups of the group Ham(M,\om) of Hamiltonian symplectomorphisms of a closed symplectic manifold (M,\om). Our main tool is the Seidel representation of π_1(\Ham(M,\om)) in the units of the quantum homology ring. We show that if the weights of the action at the points at which the moment map is a maximum are sufficiently small then the circle represents a nonzero element of π_1(\Ham(M,\om)). Further, if the isotropy has order at most two and the circle contracts in \Ham(M,\om) then the homology of M is invariant under an involution. For example, the image of the normalized moment map is a symmetric interval [-a,a]. If the action is semifree (i.e. the isotropy weights are 0 or +/- 1) then we calculate the leading order term in the Seidel representation, an important technical tool in understanding the quantum cohomology of manifolds that admit semifree Hamiltonian circle actions. If the manifold is toric, we use our results about this representation to describe the basic multiplicative structure of the quantum cohomology ring of an arbitrary toric manifold. There are two important technical ingredients; one relates the equivariant cohomology of $M$ to the Morse flow of the moment map, and the other is a version of the localization principle for calculating Gromov--Witten invariants on symplectic manifolds with S^1-actions.

On nearly semifree circle actions

Recall that an effective circle action is semifree if the stabilizer subgroup of each point is connected. We show that if $(M, \om)$ is a coadjoint orbit of a compact Lie group $G$ then every element of $π_1(G)$ may be represented by a semifree $S^1$-action. A theorem of McDuff--Slimowitz then implies that $π_1(G)$ injects into $π_1(\Ham(M, \om))$, which answers a question raised by Weinstein. We also show that a circle action on a manifold $M$ which is semifree near a fixed point $x$ cannot contract in a compact Lie subgroup $G$ of the diffeomorphism group unless the action is reversed by an element of $G$ that fixes the point $x$. Similarly, if a circle acts in a Hamiltonian fashion on a manifold $(M,ω)$ and the stabilizer of every point has at most two components, then the circle cannot contract in a compact Lie subgroup of the group of Hamiltonian symplectomorphism unless the circle is reversed by an element of $G$

Surjectivity for Hamiltonian Loop Group Spacees

Let $G$ be a compact Lie group, and let $LG$ denote the corresponding loop group. Let $(X,ω)$ be a weakly symplectic Banach manifold. Consider a Hamiltonian action of $LG$ on $(X,ω)$, and assume that the moment map $μ: X \to L\fg^*$ is proper. We consider the function $|μ|^2: X \to \R$, and use a version of Morse theory to show that the inclusion map $j:μ^{-1}(0)\to X$ induces a surjection $j^*:H_G^*(X) \to H_G^*(μ^{-1}(0))$, in analogy with Kirwan's surjectivity theorem in the finite-dimensional case. We also prove a version of this surjectivity theorem for quasi-Hamiltonian $G$-spaces.

Maximal Hamiltonian tori for polygon spaces

We study the poset of Hamiltonian tori for polygon spaces. We determine some maximal elements and give examples where maximal Hamiltonian tori are not all of the same dimension.

Centered complexity one Hamiltonian torus actions

We consider symplectic manifolds with Hamiltonian torus actions which are "almost but not quite completely integrable": the dimension of the torus is one less than half the dimension of the manifold. We provide a complete set of invariants for such spaces when they are "centered" and the moment map is proper. In particular, this classifies the moment map preimages of all sufficiently small open sets, which is an important step towards global classification. As an application, we construct a full packing of each of the Grassmanians Gr^+(2,R^5) and Gr^+(2,R^6) by two equal symplectic balls.

On the cohomology rings of Hamiltonian T-spaces

Let $M$ be a symplectic manifold equipped with a Hamiltonian action of a torus $T$. Let $F$ denote the fixed point set of the $T$-action and let $i:F\hookrightarrow M$ denote the inclusion. By a theorem of F. Kirwan \cite{K} the induced map $i^*:H_T^*(M) \to H_T^*(F)$ in equivariant cohomology is an injection. We give a simple proof of a formula of Goresky-Kottwitz-MacPherson \cite{GKM} for the image of the map $i^*$.

On semifree symplectic circle actions with isolated fixed points

Let $M$ be a symplectic manifold, equipped with a semifree symplectic circle action with a finite, nonempty fixed point set. We show that the circle action must be Hamiltonian, and $M$ must have the equivariant cohomology and Chern classes of $(P^1)^n$.

Intersection cohomology of $S^1$ symplectic quotients and small resolutions

We provided two explicit formulas for the intersection cohomology (as a graded vector space with pairing) of the symplectic quotient by a circle in terms of the $S^1$ equivariant cohomology of the original symplectic manifold and the fixed point data. The key idea is the construction of a small resolution of the symplectic quotient.

The cohomology rings of abelian symplectic quotients

Let $M$ be a symplectic manifold, equipped with a Hamiltonian action of a torus $T$. We give an explicit formula for the rational cohomology ring of the symplectic quotient $M//T$ in terms of the cohomology ring of $M$ and fixed point data. Under some restrictions, our formulas apply to integral cohomology. In certain cases these methods enable us to show that the cohomology of the reduced space is torsion-free.

Quantization of Presymplectic Manifolds and Circle Actions

We prove several versions of "quantization commutes with reduction" for circle actions on manifolds that are not symplectic. Instead, these manifolds possess a weaker structure, such as a spin^c structure. Our theorems work whenever the quantization data and the reduction data are compatible; this condition always holds if we start from a presymplectic (in particular, symplectic) manifold.

Hamiltonian torus actions on symplectic orbifolds and toric varieties

In the first part of the paper, we build a foundation for further work on Hamiltonian actions on symplectic orbifolds. Most importantly we prove the orbifold versions of the abelian connectedness and convexity theorems. In the second half, we prove that compact symplectic orbifolds with completely integrable torus actions are classified by convex simple rational polytopes with a positive integer attached to each facet and that all such orbifolds are algebraic toric varieties.

Examples of non-Kaehler Hamiltonian torus actions

An important question with a rich history is the extent to which the symplectic category is larger than the Kaehler category. Many interesting examples of non-Kaehler symplectic manifolds have been constructed. However, sufficiently large symmetries can force a symplectic manifold to be Kaehler. In this paper, we solve several outstanding problems by constructing the first symplectic manifold with large non-trivial symmetries which does not admit an invariant Kaehler structure. The proof that it is not Kaehler is based on the Atiyah-Guillemin-Sternberg convexity theorem. Using the ideas of this paper, C. Woodward shows that even the symplectic analogue of spherical varieties need not be Kaehler.

Symplectic toric orbifolds

A symplectic toric orbifold is a compact connected orbifold $M$, a symplectic form $ω$ on $M$, and an effective Hamiltonian action of a torus $T$ on $M$, where the dimension of $T$ is half the dimension of $M$. We prove that there is a one-to-one correspondence between symplectic toric orbifolds and convex rational simple polytopes with positive integers attached to each facet.
