Simulating Simple Random Walks With a Deck of Cards

When we want to simulate the realization of a symmetric simple random walk on $\mathbb Z^d$, we use $(2d)$-side fair dice to decide to which neighbor it jumps at each step if $d\geq 2$ or we simply use a fair coin when $d=1$. Assume that instead of using a dice or a coin we want to do a simulation using a well shuffled deck with $K$ cards of each of the $2d$ suits. In the first step the probability of jumping to each neighbor is $(2d)^{-1}$, but from the second step it becomes biased. Of course if we continue performing this simulation, the total variation distance between its law and the law of the random walk will increase until all cards are used. In this paper we investigate the minimum number of cards $N=2d K$ that a deck must contain so that the total variation distance between the law of a $n$-step simulation and the law of a $n$-step realization of the random walk is smaller than a chosen threshold $\varepsilon \in (0,1)$. More generally, we prove that when $N=cn$ this distance converges, as $n \to \infty$, to a Gaussian profile which depends on $c\geq 2d$. Furthermore, our analysis shows that this Gaussian profile vanishes as $c \to \infty$, proving the convergence of a multivariate hypergeometric distribution to a multinomial distribution in total variation.

How many real zeros does a random Dirichlet series have?

Let $F(σ)=\sum_{n=1}^\infty \frac{X_n}{n^σ}$ be a random Dirichlet series where $(X_n)_{n\in\mathbb{N}}$ are independent standard Gaussian random variables. We compute in a quantitative form the expected number of zeros of $F(σ)$ in the interval $[T,\infty)$, say $\mathbb{E} N(T,\infty)$, as $T\to1/2^+$. We also estimate higher moments and with this we derive exponential tails for the probability that the number of zeros in the interval $[T,1]$, say $N(T,1)$, is large. We also consider almost sure lower and upper bounds for $N(T,\infty)$. And finally, we also prove results for another class of random Dirichlet series, e.g., when the summation is restricted to prime numbers.

Asymptotic behavior of a low temperature non-cascading 2-GREM dynamics at extreme time scales

We derive the scaling limit for the Hierarchical Random Hopping dynamics for the non cascading 2-GREM at low temperatures and time scales where the dynamics is close to equilibrium. The {\em fine tuning} phenomenon plays a role (under certain choices of parameters of the model), yielding three dynamical regimes. In contrast to the {\em cascading} case, the pairs of first and second level energies have fluctuations which scale with the volume, and this leads to a family of time scales where we see the dynamics moving through only a part of the full low temperature energy landscape.

The boundary driven zero-range process

We study the asymptotic behaviour of the symmetric zero-range process in the finite lattice $\{1,\ldots, N-1\}$ with slow boundary, in which particles are created at site $1$ or annihilated at site $N\!-\!1$ with a rate proportional to $N^{-θ}$, for $θ\geq 1$. We present the invariant measure for this model and obtain the hydrostatic limit. In order to understand the asymptotic behaviour of the spatial-temporal evolution of this model under the diffusive scaling, we start to analyze the hydrodynamic limit, exploiting attractiveness as an essential ingredient. We obtain that the hydrodynamic equation has boundary conditions that depend on the value of $θ$.

Law of the iterated logarithm for a random Dirichlet series

Let $(X_n)_{n\in \mathbb{N}}$ be a sequence of i.i.d. random variables with distribution $\mathbb P(X_1=1)=\mathbb P(X_1=-1)=1/2$. Let $F(σ)=\sum_{n=1}^\infty X_nn^{-σ}$. We prove that the following holds almost surely \begin{equation*} \limsup_{σ\to 1/2^+}\frac{F(σ)}{\sqrt{2\mathbb E F(σ)^2\log\log \mathbb E F(σ)^2}}=1. \end{equation*}

Scaling limit for a long-range divisible sandpile

We study the scaling limit of a divisible sandpile model associated to a truncated $α$-stable random walk. We prove that the limiting distribution is related to an obstacle problem for a truncated fractional Laplacian. We also provide, as a fundamental tool, precise asymptotic expansions for the corresponding rescaled discrete Green's functions. In particular, the convergence rate of these Green's functions to its continuous counterpart is derived.
