Women for Quantum -- Manifesto of Values

Data show that the presence of women in quantum science is affected by a number of detriments and their percentage decreases even further for higher positions. Beyond data, from our shared personal experiences as female tenured quantum physics professors, we believe that the current model of scientific leadership, funding, and authority fails to represent many of us. It is time for a real change that calls for a different kind of force and for the participation of everyone. Women for quantum calls for a joint effort and aims with this initiative to contribute to such a transformation.

Quantum metrology in the presence of spatially correlated noise: Restoring Heisenberg scaling

Environmental noise can hinder the metrological capabilities of entangled states. While the use of entanglement allows for Heisenberg-limited resolution, the largest permitted by quantum mechanics, deviations from strictly unitary dynamics quickly restore the standard scaling dictated by the central limit theorem. Product and maximally entangled states become asymptotically equivalent when the noisy evolution is both local and strictly Markovian. However, temporal correlations in the noise have been shown to lift this equivalence while fully (spatially) correlated noise allows for the identification of decoherence free subspaces. Here we analyze precision limits in the presence of noise with finite correlation length and show that there exist robust entangled state preparations which display persistent Heisenberg scaling despite the environmental decoherence, even for small correlation length. Our results emphasize the relevance of noise correlations in the study of quantum advantage and could be relevant beyond metrological applications.

Stochastic Resonance Phenomena in Quantum Many-Body Systems

We discuss stochastic resonance (SR) effects in driven coupled quantum systems. We construct dynamical and information theoretic measures of the system's response that exhibit a non-monotonic behaviour as a function of the noise strength. We analyze the relation between lack of monotonicity in the response and the presence of quantum correlations and identify parameter regimes where the breakdown of a linear response can be linked to the presence of entanglement. We also show that a chain of coupled spin systems can exhibit an array-enhanced response, where the sensitivity of a single resonator is enhanced as a result of nearest-neighbour coupling. These results enlarge the domain where SR effects exist and should be observable in arrays of superconducting qubits.
