Sub and supersolutions, invariant cones and multiplicity results for p-Laplace equations

For a class of quasilinear elliptic equations involving the p-Laplace operator, we develop an abstract critical point theory in the presence of sub-supersolutions. Our approach is based upon the proof of the invariance under the gradient flow of enlarged cones in the $W^{1,p}_0$ topology. With this, we prove abstract existence and multiplicity theorems in the presence of variously ordered pairs of sub-supersolutions. As an application, we provide a four solutions theorem, one of the solutions being sign-changing.

Nonnegative solutions with a nontrivial nodal set for elliptic equations on smooth symmetric domains

We consider a semilinear elliptic equation on a smooth bounded domain $\Om$ in $\R^2$, assuming that both the domain and the equation are invariant under reflections about one of the coordinate axes, say the y-axis. It is known that nonnegative solutions of the Dirichlet problem for such equations are symmetric about the axis, and, if strictly positive, they are also decreasing in $x$ for $x>0$. Our goal is to exhibit examples of equations which admit nonnegative, nonzero solutions for which the second property fails; necessarily, such solutions have a nontrivial nodal set in $\Om$. Previously, such examples were known for nonsmooth domains only.

The NLS ground states on product spaces

We study the nature of the Nonlinear Schrödinger equation ground states on the product spaces $\R^n\times M^k$, where $M^k$ is a compact Riemannian manifold. We prove that for small $L^2$ masses the ground states coincide with the corresponding $\R^n$ ground states. We also prove that above a critical mass the ground states have nontrivial $M^k$ dependence. Finally, we address the Cauchy problem issue which transform the variational analysis to dynamical stability results.

On Entire Solutions of an Elliptic System Modeling Phase Separations

We study the qualitative properties of a limiting elliptic system arising in phase separation for Bose-Einstein condensates with multiple states: Δu=u v^2 in R^n, Δv= v u^2 in R^n, u, v>0\quad in R^n. When n=1, we prove uniqueness of the one-dimensional profile. In dimension 2, we prove that stable solutions with linear growth must be one-dimensional. Then we construct entire solutions in $\R^2$ with polynomial growth $|x|^d$ for any positive integer $d \geq 1$. For $d\geq 2$, these solutions are not one-dimensional. The construction is also extended to multi-component elliptic systems.

Symbolic dynamics for the $N$-centre problem at negative energies

We consider the planar $N$-centre problem, with homogeneous potentials of degree $-\a<0$, $\a \in [1,2)$. We prove the existence of infinitely many collisions-free periodic solutions with negative and small energy, for any distribution of the centres inside a compact set. The proof is based upon topological, variational and geometric arguments. The existence result allows to characterize the associated dynamical system with a symbolic dynamics, where the symbols are the partitions of the $N$ centres in two non-empty sets.

Entire minimal parabolic trajectories: the planar anisotropic Kepler problem

We continue the variational approach to parabolic trajectories introduced in our previous paper [5], which sees parabolic orbits as minimal phase transitions. We deepen and complete the analysis in the planar case for homogeneous singular potentials. We characterize all parabolic orbits connecting two minimal central configurations as free-time Morse minimizers (in a given homotopy class of paths). These may occur for at most one value of the homogeneity exponent. In addition, we link this threshold of existence of parabolic trajectories with the absence of collisions for all the minimizers of fixed-ends problems. Also the existence of action minimizing periodic trajectories with nontrivial homotopy type can be related with the same threshold.

On the behavior at collisions of solutions to Schrödinger equations with many-particle and cylindrical potentials

The asymptotic behavior of solutions to Schrödinger equations with singular homogeneous potentials is investigated. Through an Almgren type monotonicity formula and separation of variables, we describe the exact asymptotics near the singularity of solutions to at most critical semilinear elliptic equations with cylindrical and quantum multi-body singular potentials. Furthermore, by an iterative Brezis-Kato procedure, point-wise upper estimate are derived.

Asymptotic behavior of solutions to Schrödinger equations near an isolated singularity of the electromagnetic potential

Asymptotics of solutions to Schroedinger equations with singular magnetic and electric potentials is investigated. By using a Almgren type monotonicity formula, separation of variables, and an iterative Brezis-Kato type procedure, we describe the exact behavior near the singularity of solutions to linear and semilinear (critical and subcritical) elliptic equations with an inverse square electric potential and a singular magnetic potential with a homogeneity of order -1.

Sign-changing solutions of competition-diffusion elliptic systems and optimal partition problems

In this paper we prove the existence of infinitely many sign-changing solutions for the system of $m$ Schrödinger equations with competition interactions $$ -Δu_i+a_i u_i^3+βu_i \sum_{j\neq i} u_j^2 =λ_{i,β} u_i \quad u_i\in H^1_0(Ω), \quad i=1,...,m $$ where $Ω$ is a bounded domain, $β>0$ and $a_i\geq 0\ \forall i.$ Moreover, for $a_i=0$, we show a relation between critical energies associated with this system and the optimal partition problem $$ \mathop{\inf_{ω_i\subset Ω\text{open}}}_{ω_i\cap ω_j=\emptyset\forall i\neq j} \sum_{i=1}^{m} λ_{k_i}(ω_i), $$ where $λ_{k_i}(ω)$ denotes the $k_i$--th eigenvalue of $-Δ$ in $H^1_0(ω)$. In the case $k_i\leq 2$ we show that the optimal partition problem appears as a limiting critical value, as the competition parameter $β$ diverges to $+\infty$.

Entire Parabolic Trajectories as Minimal Phase Transitions

For the class of anisotropic Kepler problems in $\RR^d\setminus\{0\}$ with homogeneous potentials, we seek parabolic trajectories having prescribed asymptotic directions at infinity and which, in addition, are Morse minimizing geodesics for the Jacobi metric. Such trajectories correspond to saddle heteroclinics on the collision manifold, are structurally unstable and appear only for a codimension-one submanifold of such potentials. We give them a variational characterization in terms of the behavior of the parameter-free minimizers of an associated obstacle problem. We then give a full characterization of such a codimension-one manifold of potentials and we show how to parameterize it with respect to the degree of homogeneity.

Solutions to nonlinear Schrödinger equations with singular electromagnetic potential and critical exponent

We investigate existence and qualitative behaviour of solutions to nonlinear Schrödinger equations with critical exponent and singular electromagnetic potentials. We are concerned with magnetic vector potentials which are homogeneous of degree -1, including the Aharonov-Bohm class. In particular, by variational arguments we prove a result of multiplicity of solutions distinguished by symmetry properties.

Existence and nonexistence of entire solutions for non-cooperative cubic elliptic systems

In this paper we deal with the cubic Schrödinger system $ -Δu_i = \sum_{j=1}^n β_{ij}u_j^2 u_i$, $u_1,\dots,u_n \geq 0$ in $\mathbb{R}^N (N\leq 3)$, where $β=(β_{i,j})_{ij}$ is a symmetric matrix with real coefficients and $β_{ii}\geq 0$ for every $i=1,\ldots,n$. We analyse the existence and nonexistence of nontrivial solutions in connection with the properties of the matrix $β$, and provide a complete characterization in dimensions $N=1,2$. Extensions to more general power-type nonlinearities are given.

Regularity of the nodal set of segregated critical configurations under a weak reflection law

We deal with a class of Lipschitz vector functions $U=(u_1,...,u_h)$ whose components are non negative, disjointly supported and verify an elliptic equation on each support. Under a weak formulation of a reflection law, related to the Pohouzaev identity, we prove that the nodal set is a collection of $C^{1,α}$ hyper-surfaces (for every $0<α<1$), up to a residual set with small Hausdorff dimension. This result applies to the asymptotic limits of reaction-diffusion systems with strong competition interactions, to optimal partition problems involving eigenvalues, as well as to segregated standing waves for Bose-Einstein condensates in multiple hyperfine spin states.

Convergence of minimax and continuation of critical points for singularly perturbed systems

We consider a competitive system of two stationary Gross-Pitaevskii equations arising in the theory of Bose-Einstein condensation, and the corresponding scalar equation. We address the question: "Is it true that every bounded family of solutions of the system converges, as the competition parameter goes to infinity, to a pair which difference solves the scalar equation?". We discuss this question in the case when the solutions to the system are obtained as minimax critical points via (weak) L^2 Krasnoselskii genus theory. Our results, though still partial, give a strong indication of a positive answer.

Nodal sets of magnetic Schroedinger operators of Aharonov-Bohm type and energy minimizing partitions

In this paper we consider a stationary Schroedinger operator in the plane, in presence of a magnetic field of Aharonov-Bohm type with semi-integer circulation. We analyze the nodal regions for a class of solutions such that the nodal set consists of regular arcs, connecting the singular points with the boundary. In case of one magnetic pole, which is free to move in the domain, the nodal lines may cluster dissecting the domain in three parts. Our main result states that the magnetic energy is critical (with respect to the magnetic pole) if and only if such a configuration occurs. Moreover the nodal regions form a minimal 3-partition of the domain (with respect to the real energy associated to the equation), the configuration is unique and depends continuously on the data. The analysis performed is related to the notion of spectral minimal partition introduced in [20]. As it concerns eigenfunctions, we similarly show that critical points of the Rayleigh quotient correspond to multiple clustering of the nodal lines.
