Non-Perturbative $S$-matrix Renormalization

We propose a renormalization group flow equation for a functional that generates $S$-matrix elements and which captures similarities to the well-known Wetterich and Polchinski equations. While the latter ones respectively involve the effective action and Schwinger functional, which are genuine off-shell objects, the presented flow equation has the advantage of working more directly with observables, i.e. scattering amplitudes. Compared to the Wetterich equation, our flow equation also greatly simplifies the notion of going on-shell, in the sense of satisfying the quantum equations of motion. In addition, unlike the Wetterich equation, it is polynomial and does not require a Hessian inversion. The approach is a promising direction for non-perturbative quantum field theories, allowing one to work more directly with scattering amplitudes.

Gauge Symmetry Breaking Lattice Regularizations and their Continuum Limit

Lattice regularizations are pivotal in the non-perturbative quantization of gauge field theories. Wilson's proposal to employ group-valued link fields simplifies the regularization of gauge fields in principal fiber bundles, preserving gauge symmetry within the discretized lattice theory. Maintaining gauge symmetry is desirable as its violation can introduce unwanted degrees of freedom. However, not all theories with gauge symmetries admit gauge-invariant lattice regularizations, as observed in general relativity where the diffeomorphism group serves as the gauge symmetry. In such cases, gauge symmetry-breaking regularizations become necessary. In this paper, we argue that a broken lattice gauge symmetry is acceptable as long as gauge symmetry is restored in the continuum limit. We propose a method to construct the continuum limit for a class of lattice-regularized Hamiltonian field theories, where the regularization breaks the Lie algebra of first-class constraints. Additionally, we offer an approach to represent the exact gauge group on the Hilbert space of the continuum theory. The considered class of theories is limited to those with first-class constraints linear in momenta, excluding the entire gauge group of general relativity but encompassing its subgroup of spatial diffeomorphisms. We discuss potential techniques for extending this quantization to the full gauge group.

Quantum Geometrodynamics Revived II. Hilbert Space of Positive Definite Metrics

This paper represents the second in a series of works aimed at reinvigorating the quantum geometrodynamics program. Our approach introduces a lattice regularization of the hypersurface deformation algebra, such that each lattice site carries a set of canonical variables given by the components of the spatial metric and the corresponding conjugate momenta. In order to quantize this theory, we describe a representation of the canonical commutation relations that enforces the positivity of the operators $\hat q_{ab} s^a s^b$ for all choices of $s$. Moreover, symmetry of $\hat q_{ab}$ and $\hat p^{ab}$ is ensured. This reflects the physical requirement that the spatial metric should be a positive definite, symmetric tensor. To achieve this end, we resort to the Cholesky decomposition of the spatial metric into upper triangular matrices with positive diagonal entries. Moreover, our Hilbert space also carries a representation of the vielbein fields and naturally separates the physical and gauge degrees of freedom. Finally, we introduce a generalization of the Weyl quantization for our representation. We want to emphasize that our proposed methodology is amenable to applications in other fields of physics, particularly in scenarios where the configuration space is restricted by complicated relationships among the degrees of freedom.

Quantum Geometrodynamics Revived I. Classical Constraint Algebra

In this series of papers, we present a set of methods to revive quantum geometrodynamics which encountered numerous mathematical and conceptual challenges in its original form promoted by Wheeler and De Witt. In this paper, we introduce the regularization scheme on which we base the subsequent quantization and continuum limit of the theory. Specifically, we employ the set of piecewise constant fields as the phase space of classical geometrodynamics, resulting in a theory with finitely many degrees of freedom of the spatial metric field. As this representation effectively corresponds to a lattice theory, we can utilize well-known techniques to depict the constraints and their algebra on the lattice. We are able to compute the lattice corrections to the constraint algebra. This model can now be quantized using the usual methods of finite--dimensional quantum mechanics, as we demonstrate in the following paper. The application of the continuum limit is the subject of a future publication.

Lorentzian quantum cosmology goes simplicial

We employ the methods of discrete (Lorentzian) Regge calculus for analysing Lorentzian quantum cosmology models with a special focus on discrete analogues of the no-boundary proposal for the early universe. We use a simple 4-polytope, a subdivided 4-polytope and shells of discrete 3-spheres as triangulations to model a closed universe with cosmological constant, and examine the semiclassical path integral for these different choices. We find that the shells give good agreement with continuum results for small values of the scale factor and in particular for finer discretisations of the boundary 3-sphere, while the simple and subdivided 4-polytopes can only be compared with the continuum in certain regimes, and in particular are not able to capture a transition from Euclidean geometry with small scale factor to a large Lorentzian one. Finally, we consider a closed universe filled with dust particles and discretised by shells of 3-spheres. This model can approximate the continuum case quite well. Our results embed the no-boundary proposal in a discrete setting where it is possibly more naturally defined, and prepare for its discussion within the realm of spin foams.

Detailed investigation of the duration of inflation in loop quantum cosmology for a Bianchi-I universe with different inflaton potentials and initial conditions

There is a wide consensus on the correct dynamics of the background in loop quantum cosmology. In this article we make a systematic investigation of the duration of inflation by varying what we think to be the most important "unknowns" of the model: the way to set initial conditions, the amount of shear at the bounce and the shape of the inflaton potential.

Primordial scalar power spectrum from the Euclidean Big Bounce

In effective models of loop quantum cosmology, the holonomy corrections are associated with deformations of space-time symmetries. The most evident manifestation of the deformations is the emergence of an Euclidean phase accompanying the non-singular bouncing dynamics of the scale factor. In this article, we compute the power spectrum of scalar perturbations generated in this model, with a massive scalar field as the matter content. Instantaneous and adiabatic vacuum-type initial conditions for scalar perturbations are imposed in the contracting phase. The evolution through the Euclidean region is calculated based on the extrapolation of the time direction pointed by the vectors normal to the Cauchy hypersurface in the Lorentzian domains. The obtained power spectrum is characterized by a suppression in the IR regime and oscillations in the intermediate energy range. Furthermore, the speculative extension of the analysis in the UV reveals a specific rise of the power.

Observational Exclusion of a Consistent Quantum Cosmology Scenario

It is often argued that inflation erases all the information about what took place before it started. Quantum gravity, relevant in the Planck era, seems therefore mostly impossible to probe with cosmological observations. In general, only very ad hoc scenarios or hyper fine-tuned initial conditions can lead to observationally testable theories. Here we consider a well-defined and well motivated candidate quantum cosmology model that predicts inflation. Using the most recent observational constraints on the cosmic microwave background B modes, we show that the model is excluded for all its parameter space, without any tuning. Some important consequences are drawn for the deformed algebra approach to loop quantum cosmology. We emphasize that neither loop quantum cosmology in general nor loop quantum gravity are disfavored by this study but their falsifiability is established.
