The Potential of HEFT and the scale of New Physics

We employ a geometric framework to compute the leading high-energy behaviour of tree-level scattering amplitudes in theories containing $N$ Nambu-Goldstone bosons and a single Higgs-like scalar with an arbitrary potential $V$. Using these methods, we obtain closed-form expressions for the leading contribution to the full infinite set of tree amplitudes involving any number of Goldstone and Higgs-like external states. These results are then used to derive total cross sections, decay rates, and perturbative unitarity bounds. We then apply our general formalism to the Standard Model scalar sector using the equivalence theorem, working in the regime of small field-space curvature, and use it to characterise the relation between Higgs Effective Field Theory (HEFT) and the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT). We analyse three representative classes of models. Two reproduce previously known behaviours, while the third, based on a dilaton effective theory, exhibits a noteworthy feature within the HEFT framework: a smooth decoupling limit that connects HEFT directly to the Standard Model without passing through a SMEFT regime, providing a possible backdoor to the Standard Model.

Emergent Large Lepton Mixing from Neutrino Refraction in Dark Matter

We propose a novel origin for the disparity between quark and lepton flavor mixing based on the refractive nature of neutrino masses. We postulate that the fundamental mixing in both the quark and lepton sectors is CKM-like, together with tiny vacuum neutrino masses, while the observed PMNS mixing matrix emerges dynamically from coherent forward scattering of neutrinos on an ultralight dark matter background. The resulting in-medium Hamiltonian rotates CKM mixing angles into large effective lepton mixings, naturally realizing quark--lepton complementarity without invoking new flavor symmetries. This framework links neutrino mass generation, flavor mixing, and dark matter, and predicts environment-dependent neutrino oscillation effects testable in current and future experiments.

Differential observables for the Higgs-strahlung process to all orders in EFT

We develop methods to obtain the fully differential cross-section for the $f \bar{f} \to Z(\ell\ell)\,h$ process to any desired order in effective field theory (EFT). To achieve this, we first derive a mapping between the partial wave expansion and the EFT expansion to all orders. We find that at lower orders, EFT predicts correlations between the different partial wave coefficients. This allows us to construct linear combinations of partial wave coefficients that get their leading contributions from a higher dimension EFT operator. We then introduce experimental observables, the so called angular moments -- that probe these linear combinations of partial wave coefficients -- and can be determined from a fully differential analysis of the angular distribution of the leptons arising from the $Z$ decay. We show that analysing the dependence of these angular moments on the $Zh$ invariant mass allows us to systematically probe all higher dimension EFT operators contributing to this process. While we take the Higgs-strahlung process as an example, the methods developed here are completely general and can be applied to other 2-to-2 collider processes.

Refractive neutrino masses in the solar DM halo: Can the dark-LMA solution be revived?

Neutrinos can acquire "refractive masses" as a consequence of their interactions with ultralight dark matter (DM). We explore a model with two additional sterile neutrinos and an ultralight scalar field which acts as DM and interacts with all five neutrinos. We show that the effective $5 \times 5$ Hamiltonian for neutrino propagation can be diagonalized by a unitary matrix $\mathbb{P}$ parametrized by 6 mixing angles and 1 complex phase. When active-sterile mixing angles are small, we identify a parametrization for $\mathbb{P}$ that reduces neutrino propagation inside the Sun to a two-flavor problem for a uniform DM background. In the presence of a DM halo inside the Sun, however, the propagation shows additional features in the region of halo dominance. We derive approximate analytic expressions for the electron neutrino survival probability in the presence of the DM halo. We show that this probability has a strong dependence on the neutrino production region even for a fixed energy, and numerically calculate the effects of averaging over these production regions. Comparisons with the re-interpreted solar data, in the light of possible active-sterile neutrino conversions, would allow putting bounds on the halo parameters. Finally, we examine the possibility of reviving the dark-LMA solution in this context, where the survival probability spectrum can have attractive features aligned with the measurements at Super-Kamiokande.

Towards the HEFT-hedron: the complete set of positivity constraints at NLO

We present the complete set of positivity bounds on the Higgs Effective Field Theory (HEFT) at next-to-leading order (NLO). We identify the 15 operators that can be constrained by positivity, as they contribute to $s^2$-growth in the amplitude for longitudinal gauge-Higgs scattering, that is to all possible 2-to-2 scattering processes involving longitudinal gauge bosons, $V_L = W_L^\pm, Z_L$, and the Higgs boson, $h$. We find two sets of constraints: (i) specific linear combinations of CP-even Wilson coefficients (WCs) must be positive, and (ii) the magnitudes of some WCs -- including all CP-odd ones -- must be smaller than products of other CP-even WCs. We present our final constraints on the 15 dimensional HEFT space and show how known positivity bounds on the 3 dimensional space of dimension 8 SMEFT can be recovered from them. We find that only about $5\%$ of the parameter space for WCs of HEFT operators at NLO complies with these positivity constraints. Additionally, we obtain double-sided bounds on these WCs by fully exploiting the implications of unitarity and $st$-crossing symmetry. For WCs contributing to the vector boson scattering process our final constraints are in most cases significantly stronger than the experimental ones. For the $V_L V_L, hh \to hh$ and $V_LV_L, hh \to V_Lh$ process, there are no reported experimental limits and our theoretical constraints provide the first bounds.

Cosmological selection of a small weak scale from large vacuum energy: a minimal approach

We present a minimal cosmological solution to the hierarchy problem. Our model consists of a light pseudoscalar and an extra Higgs doublet in addition to the field content of the Standard Model. We consider a landscape of vacua with varying values of the electroweak vacuum expectation value (VEV). The vacuum energy in our model peaks in a region of the landscape where the electroweak VEV is non-zero and much smaller than the cutoff. During inflation, due to exponential expansion, such regions of the landscape with maximal vacuum energy, dominate the universe in volume, thus explaining the smallness of the electroweak scale with respect to the cutoff. The pseudoscalar potential in our model is that of a completely generic pseudogoldstone boson$-$not requiring the clockwork mechanism$-$and its field value never exceeds its decay constant or the Planck scale. Our mechanism is robust to the variation of other model parameters in the landscape along with the electroweak VEV. It also predicts a precise and falsifiable relationship between the masses and couplings of the different Higgs boson mass-eigenstates. Moreover, the pseudoscalar in our model can account for the observed dark matter relic density.

Identifying physics beyond SMEFT in the angular distribution of $Λ_b\rightarrow Λ_c(\rightarrowΛπ)τ\barν_τ$ decay

In the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT), the $SU(2)_L\times U(1)_Y$ symmetry of the Standard Model is linearly realized. However, it is possible that more general effective field theories, such as the Higgs Effective Field Theory (HEFT) where this symmetry is realized non-linearly, are needed to describe the data. Identifying physics beyond SMEFT could shed light on the nature of Higgs and the realization of the electroweak symmetry. We explore the possibility of such an identification by studying the effects of scalar and vector new-physics operators on the angular distribution of $Λ_b\rightarrow Λ_c(\rightarrowΛπ)τ\barν_τ$. This decay is sensitive to the 6-dimensional effective operator $O_V^{LR}\equiv(\barτγ^μP_Lν_τ)(\bar{c}γ_μP_R b)$, which is present in HEFT but suppressed in SMEFT. We identify the angular observables that can have significant contributions from $O_V^{LR}$, and hence would be useful for probing not only BSM physics but also physics beyond SMEFT. We further find that constraining the branching ratio of $B_c\rightarrow τ\bar ν_τ$ would be crucial for performing this task.
