High mobility holes at germanane/Ge(111) allotropic cross-dimensional heterointerface

Germanane (GeH) is essentially a hydrogen-terminated Ge analog of graphene with a direct gap (~1.6 eV). Record hole mobility mu_h~67,000 cm2/Vs is found at 15 K for a single allotropic cross-dimensional(D) heterointerface. This is enabled by making topotactically-transformed 2D GeH layers meet the 3D bulk Ge(111). Temperature dependence of mu_h implies metallic conduction without ionized impurity scattering between 20 K and 250 K. Sheet hole density for a Fermi sphere n_S=2.8x10^11 /cm2 agrees well with 3.0x10^11 /cm2 of Hall measurements. A 6,500% magnetoresistance at 7 T accompanies Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations visible even at 15 K. These imply single-band conduction of holes with small effective mass in the in-plane directions, invoking a 2D hole gas (2DHG) picture that allotropic cross-D heterointerface between 2D GeH and 3D Ge harbors 2D-confined high-mobility holes. Even without elaborate heteroepitaxy and modulation doping, allotropic cross-D heterostructures pave the way toward facile 2DHG creation.

Single time pixel imaging enabled by repurposing optoelectronic devices

One-time readout temporal ghost imaging is attempted by utilizing optoelectronic devices that are not originally intended for signal photon detection purposes and as such slow by design. A visible light-emitting diode having a response time $τ$=0.036 ms and a solar cell with $τ$=3.1ms are used to retrieve a rectangular pulse train, which is otherwise rounded with significant overlapping, in the image of a temporal mask simply by capturing data once at a selected single time effective operation duration are discussed.

Ghost Diffraction in Time Domain: Two-Photon Reciprocal Two-Slit Diffraction-Interference

Temporal ghost diffraction (TGD) is observed by taking two-photon cross-correlation in the configuration of reciprocal two-slit diffraction (2SD) where interference fringes develop on the light source side as opposed to the detector side. To this end, a narrow-band chaotic light source and a gated detector are used in the frequency-time domain, which emulate a randomly pointing incoherent light source and a stationary pinhole detector in the momentum-space domain, respectively. Spectral fringes with visibility that closely follows a sinc function of spectral bandwidth are clear evidence that legitimate TGD fringes due to two-photon interference develop even with classical light.

Differential ghost imaging in time domain

Differential ghost imaging was attempted in time domain, i.e., temporal differential ghost imaging (TDGI), using pseudo-randomized light pulses and a temporal object consisting of no-return-to-zero bit patterns of varying duty. Evaluation of the signal-to-noise characteristics by taking account of errors due to false cross-correlation between the reference and the bucket detector readings indicates that the TDGI outperforms its non-differential counterpart, i.e., time-domain GI, in terms of consistently high and even duty-independent signal-to-noise ratios that are achieved. Dynamic local averaging helps save data recording without compromising the essential features of the TDGI.
