Bogoliubov Excitations in a Kronig-Penney Potential

With use of the Kronig-Penney model, we study the excitation spectrum of a Bose-Einstein condensate in a one-dimensional periodic potential. We solve the Bogoliubov equations analytically and obtain the band structure of the excitation spectrum for arbitrary values of the lattice depth. We find that the excitation spectrum is gapless and linear at low energies, and that it is due to the {\it anomalous tunneling} of low energy excitations, predicted by Kagan {\it et al.}.

Effects of fermion-boson interaction in neutral atomic systems

We investigate the collective excitations of $^3$He-$^4$He mixture films at zero temperature within random phase approximation and linear response theory. In low concentration region of $^3$He, a level repulsion between zero sound and third sound mode is derived, which opens the possibility to observe quantum mechanical coherence between $^3$He particle-hole pair and the condensate of $^4$He. We also investigate the $^3$He-$^4$He vertex corrections in ladder approximation and show that the third branch, the combined mode of fermionic particle-hole pair and the third sound quanta, provides a unique correction to Landau $f$ function. Some implications to the fermion-boson mixture of alkali atoms in a potential trap is discussed.

Josephson $π$-state in superconductor-Luttinger liquid hybrid systems

Josephson current through a Luttinger liquid (LL) under a magnetic field is theoretically studied. We derive an analytical expression of Josephson current for clean interfaces, by using quasiclassical Green's function and functional bosonization procedure. We show that critical currents can be renormalized by electron-electron interactions at perfect transparency when LL is adiabatically connected with superconductors. We also find that a generation of $π$-state, due to spin-dependent energy shift in Andreev bound states (ABS), is prohibited even at zero temperature when the strength of repulsive interactions reaches some critical value. The suppression of $π$-state is caused by the low energy fluctuations propagating in LL, and making the Zeeman splitting in ABS blurred.

Bosonization approach to the edge reconstruction of two dimentional electron systems in a quantum dot

We consider the edge reconstruction of electrons in a two dimensional harmonic trap under a strong magnetic field. In this system the edge reconstruction occurs as a result of competition between electron-electron interaction and confining potential. To describe it, we develop a bosonization scheme for two dimensional electron systems. With this method we obtain the excitation spectrum and demonstrate that the edge reconstruction occurs when the value of the magnetic field reaches a critical value. We also show that the edge reconstruction depends on the number of electrons. Additionally, we calculate the third order terms of bosons in Hamiltonian and examine the effect of those terms with a perturbation theory.

First-order superfluid-Mott insulator transition of spinor bosons in an optical lattice

We study the superfluid-Mott insulator transition of antiferromagnetic spin-1 bosons in an optical lattice described by a Bose-Hubbard model. Our variational study with the Gutzwiller-type trial wave function determines that the superfluid-Mott insulator transition is a first-order one at a part of the phase boundary curve, contrary to the spinless case. This first-order transition may be observed through an experiment, such as a Stern-Gerlach type, under a magnetic field.

Thermal transport properties of a charge density wave

Effects of collective modes on thermoelectric properties of a charge density system is studied. We derive the temperature dependence of thermoelectric power and thermal conductivity by applying the linear response theory to Fröhlich Hamiltonian. Energy dissipation has been attributed to non-linear interaction between phase mode and amplitude mode, ignoring disorder effects. We have found that the temperature dependence of the correlation function of electrical and heat currents is the same as that of electrical conductivity. This implies that thermoelectric power is inversely proportional to temperature. We have also found that temperature dependence of all the correlation functions are essentially determined by the common mechanism - nonlinear amplitude-phase interaction. Thermal conductivity has nearly constant value at the temperature above amplitude mode gap, and has exponentially low value at the temperature sufficiently below it.

Singlet superconductivity phase in carbon nanotubes

We discuss phase diagrams obtained by calculating temperature dependent correlation functions for superconductivity and density waves for a single (5,0) carbon nanotube (CN). We use one-loop renormalization group method within logarithmic accuracy. In this system we must specify scattering channels in terms of momentum along the circumferential direction as well as the axis direction, since (5,0) CN has two degenerate bands crossing the Fermi energy with circumferential momenta. We find singlet-superconducting phase with $5\hbar$ circumferential angular momentum. Critical exponents for each correlation functions are also calculated.

Analytical treatment of interacting Fermi gas in arbitrary dimensional harmonic trap

We study normal state properties of an interacting Fermi gas in an isotropic harmonic trap of arbitrary dimensions. We exactly calculate the first-order perturbation terms in the ground state energy and chemical potential, and obtain simple analytic expressions of the total energy and chemical potential. At zero temperature, we find that Thomas-Fermi approximation agrees well with exact results for any dimension even though system is dilute and small, i.e. when the Thomas-Fermi approximation is generally expected to fail. In the high temperature (classical) region, we find interaction energy decreases in proportion to T^(-d/2), where T is temperature and d is dimension of the system. Effect of interaction in the ground state in two and three-dimensional systems is also discussed.

Superfluid-Mott Insulator Transition of Spin-1 Bosons in an Optical Lattice

We have studied superfluid-Mott insulating transition of spin-1 bosons interacting antiferromagnetically in an optical lattice. We have obtained the zero-temperature phase diagram by a mean-field approximation and have found that the superfluid phase is to be a polar state as a usual trapped spin-1 Bose gas. More interestingly, we have found that the Mott-insulating phase is strongly stabilized only when the number of atoms per site is even.

Josephson Effect between Condensates with Different Internal Structures

A general formula for Josephson current in a wide class of hybrid junctions between different internal structures is derived on the basis of the Andreev picture. The formula extends existing formulae and also enables us to analyze novel B-phase/A-phase/B-phase (BAB) junctions in superfluid helium three systems, which are accessible to experiments. It is predicted that BAB junctions will exhibit two types of current-phase relations associated with different internal symmetries. A ``pseudo-magnetic interface effect'' inherent in the system is also revealed.

Collective Excitations of Dilute Bose-Fermi Superfluid Mixtures

Using the effective action formalism, we investigate collective excitations of a dilute mixture of a Bose gas and a two component Fermi gas when both bosons and fermions have undergone superfluid transitions. We show that there is a repulsion between Bogoliubov and Anderson modes, which has important implications including disappearance of boson superfluidity. We derive an analytic expression for the long-wavelength dispersion relation of the mixture at zero temperature and give a condition for the instability. We also numerically calculate the damping rate due to boson-fermion interaction at finite temperatures and show that the two modes are stable at sufficiently low temperatures.

Superconductor-Insulator Transition in Random Two-Dimensional System

Effect of disorder in metallic thin film is examined as a possible mechanism of the Superconductor-Insulator (S-I) transition. The critical value of disorder corresponding to the transition point is found analytically by using Matsubara-Matsuda model and Green's function method.

Topological Excitations in Spinor Bose-Einstein Condensates

We investigate the properties of skyrmion in the ferromagnetic state of spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensates by means of the mean-field theory and show that the size of skyrmion is fixed to the order of the healing length. It is shown that the interaction between two skyrmions with oppositely rotating spin textures is attractive when their separation is large, following a unique power-law behavior with a power of -7/2.
