First Measurement of the $K^-$ Escape Cross Section in the ${}^{12}{\rm C}(K^{-},p)$ Reaction

We investigated the $\bar{K}$-nucleus interaction through the simultaneous measurement of the inclusive $^{12}{\rm C}(K^-, p)$ and exclusive $K^-$-escape $^{12}{\rm C}(K^-, p K^-_{esc})$ reactions at $1.8$ GeV/$c$ at J-PARC. The present measurement explicitly focuses on the $K^-$ escape process for the first time, successfully accomplishing a direct experimental determination of the imaginary part of the $K^-$ optical potential. The differential cross section for the $K^-$-escape reaction was determined to be $436 \pm 6\:(\text{stat.}) \pm 44\:(\text{syst.})~μ\text{b/sr}$. A simultaneous likelihood fit yielded real and imaginary potential strengths of $V_0 = -72\:^{+3}_{-5}\:(\text{stat.})\:^{+0}_{-8}\:(\text{syst.})~\text{MeV}$ and $W_0 = -100\:^{+7}_{-1}\:(\text{stat.})\:^{+0}_{-16}\:(\text{syst.})~\text{MeV}$ at the nuclear center, respectively. The derived $W_0$ is significantly stronger than that predicted by theoretical models based on one-nucleon processes, suggesting possible contribution of multi-nucleon involving processes.

First measurement of $ϕ$ meson production in 30 GeV proton-nucleus reactions via di-electron decay at J-PARC

We present the first measurement of the production of the $ϕ$ meson in 30 GeV proton-nucleus interactions on carbon and copper targets via the di-electron decay channel. The measurement was conducted at the high-momentum beamline of the J-PARC Hadron Experimental Facility, which was commissioned in 2020. The $e^+e^-$ pairs were detected using the E16 spectrometer, during a commissioning run of the J-PARC E16 experiment. The $ϕ$ mesons are successfully reconstructed on all experimental targets. The obtained yields are converted to the total production cross section, assuming a kinematical distribution of the event generator JAM. The total cross sections derived are 2.0 $\pm$ 0.9 (stat.) $\pm$ 1.0 (syst.) mb on the carbon target and 10.3 $\pm$ 4.4 (stat.) $\pm$ 4.4 (syst.) mb on the copper target. The mass-number dependence of the cross section is discussed using the parameter $α$, defined as $σ\propto A^α$, resulting in $α= $ 0.99 $\pm$ 0.38 (stat.) $\pm$ 0.34 (syst.). The extrapolation to $A=1$, which means that the cross section of proton-proton reactions, is in good agreement with the existing measurements at comparable energies.

Accurate Radar-Based Detection of Sleep Apnea Using Overlapping Time-Interval Averaging

Radar-based respiratory measurement is a promising tool for the noncontact detection of sleep apnea. Our team has reported that apnea events can be accurately detected using the statistical characteristics of the amplitude of respiratory displacement. However, apnea and hypopnea events are often followed by irregular breathing, reducing the detection accuracy. This study proposes a new method to overcome this performance degradation by repeatedly applying the detection method to radar data sets corresponding to multiple overlapping time intervals. Averaging the detected classes over multiple time intervals gives an analog value between 0 and 1, which can be interpreted as the probability that there is an apnea event. We show that the proposed method can mitigate the effect of irregular breathing that occurs after apnea / hypopnea events, and its performance is confirmed by experimental data taken from seven patients.

Cross section Measurements for $^{12}$C$(K^-, K^+Ξ^-)$ and $^{12}$C$(K^-, K^+ΛΛ)$ Reactions at 1.8 GeV$/c$

We present a measurement of the production of $Ξ^-$ and $ΛΛ$ in the $^{12}$C$(K^-, K^+)$ reaction at an incident beam momentum of 1.8 GeV/$\mathit{c}$, based on high-statistics data from J-PARC E42. The cross section for the $^{12}$C$(K^-, K^+Ξ^-)$ reaction, compared to the inclusive $^{12}$C$(K^-, K^+)$ reaction cross section, indicates that the $Ξ^-$ escaping probability peaks at 70\% in the energy region of $E_Ξ=$100 to 150 MeV above the $Ξ^-$ emission threshold. A classical approach using eikonal approximation shows that the total cross sections for $Ξ^-$ inelastic scattering ranges between 42 mb and 23 mb in the $Ξ^-$ momentum range from 0.4 to 0.6 GeV/c. Furthermore, based on the relative cross section for the $^{12}$C$(K^-, K^+ΛΛ)$ reaction, the total cross section for $Ξ^-p\toΛΛ$ is estimated in the same approach to vary between 2.2 mb and 1.0 mb in the momentum range of 0.40 to 0.65 GeV/c. Specifically, a cross section of 1.0 mb in the momentum range of 0.5 to 0.6 GeV/c imposes a constraint on the upper bound of the decay width of the $Ξ^-$ particle in infinite nuclear matter, revealing $Γ_Ξ< \sim 0.6$ MeV.

Noncontact Detection of Sleep Apnea Using Radar and Expectation-Maximization Algorithm

Sleep apnea syndrome requires early diagnosis because this syndrome can lead to a variety of health problems. If sleep apnea events can be detected in a noncontact manner using radar, we can then avoid the discomfort caused by the contact-type sensors that are used in conventional polysomnography. This study proposes a novel radar-based method for accurate detection of sleep apnea events. The proposed method uses the expectation-maximization algorithm to extract the respiratory features that form normal and abnormal breathing patterns, resulting in an adaptive apnea detection capability without any requirement for empirical parameters. We conducted an experimental quantitative evaluation of the proposed method by performing polysomnography and radar measurements simultaneously in five patients with the symptoms of sleep apnea syndrome. Through these experiments, we show that the proposed method can detect the number of apnea and hypopnea events per hour with an error of 4.8 times/hour; this represents an improvement in the accuracy by 1.8 times when compared with the conventional threshold-based method and demonstrates the effectiveness of our proposed method.

Data acquisition system in Run-0a for the J-PARC E16 experiment

J-PARC E16 is an experiment to examine the origin of hadron mass through a systematic measurement of spectral changes of vector mesons in nuclei. The measurement of $e^{+}e^{-}$ pairs from the decay of vector mesons will provide the information of the partial restoration of the chiral symmetry in a normal nuclear density. To resolve a pulse pile-up and achieve good discrimination of $e^{\pm}$ from the background of a reaction rate of an order of 10 MHz, the data acquisition (DAQ) system uses waveform sampling chips of APV25 and DRS4. The trigger rate and data rate are expected to be 1 kHz and 130--330 MiB/s, respectively. The DAQ system for readout of APV25 and DRS4 were developed, where events were synchronized by common trigger and tag data. The first commissioning in beam, called Run-0a, was performed in June 2020 with about 1/4 of the designed setup. The DAQ worked with a trigger rate of 300 Hz in the Run-0a and the main bottleneck was a large data size of APV25. Further optimization of the DAQ system will improve the performance.

Observation of the "$K^-pp$"-like structure in the $d(π^+, K^+)$ reaction at 1.69 GeV/$c$

We have observed a "$K^-pp$"-like structure in the $d(π^+,K^+)$ reaction at 1.69 GeV/$c$. In this reaction $Λ(1405)$ hyperon resonance is expected to be produced as a doorway to form the $K^-pp$ through the $Λ^*p\rightarrow K^-pp$ process. However, most of the produced $Λ(1405)$'s would escape from deuteron without secondary reactions. Therefore, coincidence of high-momentum ($>$ 250~MeV/$c$) proton(s) in large emission angles ($39^\circ<θ_{lab.}<122^\circ$) was requested to enhance the signal-to-background ratio. A broad enhancement in the proton coincidence spectra are observed around the missing-mass of 2.27 GeV/$c^2$, which corresponds to the $K^-pp$ binding energy of 95 $^{+18}_{-17}$ (stat.) $^{+30}_{-21}$ (syst.) MeV and the width of 162 $^{+87}_{-45}$ (stat.) $^{+66}_{-78}$ (syst.) MeV.

Inclusive spectrum of the $d(π^+, K^+)$ reaction at 1.69 GeV/c

We have measured an inclusive missing-mass spectrum of the $d(π^+, K^+)$ reaction at the pion incident momentum of 1.69 GeV/$c$ at the laboratory scattering angles between 2$^\circ$ and 16$^\circ$ with the missing-mass resolution of 2.7 $\pm$ 0.1 MeV/$c^2$ (FWHM) at the missing mass of 2.27 GeV/$c^{2}$. In this Letter, we first try to understand the spectrum as a simple quasi-free picture based on several known elementary cross sections, considering the neutron/proton Fermi motion in deuteron. While gross spectrum structures are well understood in this picture, we have observed two distinct deviations; one peculiar enhancement at 2.13 GeV/$c^2$ is due to the $ΣN$ cusp, and the other notable feature is a shift of a broad bump structure, mainly originating from hyperon resonance productions of $Λ(1405)$ and $Σ(1385)^{+/0}$, by about 22.4 $\pm$ 0.4 (stat.) $^{+2.7}_{-1.7}$ (syst.) MeV/$c^2$ toward the low-mass side, which is calculated in the kinematics of a proton at rest as the target.
