Bulk and surface transitions in asymmetric simple exclusion process: Impact on boundary layers

In this paper, we study boundary-induced phase transitions in a particle non-conserving asymmetric simple exclusion process with open boundaries. Using boundary layer analysis, we show that the key signatures of various bulk phase transitions are present in the boundary layers of the density profiles. In addition, we also find possibilities of surface transitions in the low- and high- density phases. The surface transition in the low-density phase provides a more complete description of the non-equilibrium critical point found in this system.

Nonequilibrium Criticality at Shock Formation in Steady States

The steady state shock formation in processes like nonconserving asymmetric simple exclusion processes in varied situations is shown to be a nonequilibrium critical phenomenon. The diverging length scales and the quantitative description of the transition including the phase boundary are obtained from a few general properties of the dynamics without relying on specific details.

Driven diffusive system with non-local perturbations

We investigate the impact of non-local perturbations on driven diffusive systems. Two different problems are considered here. In one case, we introduce a non-local particle conservation along the direction of the drive and in another case, we incorporate a long-range temporal correlation in the noise present in the equation of motion. The effect of these perturbations on the anisotropy exponent or on the scaling of the two-point correlation function is studied using renormalization group analysis.

Driven diffusive system: A study on large n limit

We study the generalized $n$ component model of a driven diffusive system with annealed random drive in the large $n$ limit. This non-equilibrium model also describes conserved order parameter dynamics of an equilibrium model of ferromagnets with dipolar interaction. In this limit, at zero temperature a saddle point approximation becomes exact. The length scale in the direction transverse to the driving field acquires an additional logarithmic correction in this limit.

Nonequilibrium Growth problems

We discuss the features of nonequilibrium growth problems, their scaling description and their differences from equilibrium problems. The emphasis is on the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation and the renormalization group point of view. Some of the recent developments along these lines are mentioned.

Vicinal Surfaces, Fractional Statistics and Universality

We propose that the phases of all vicinal surfaces can be characterized by four fixed lines, in the renormalization group sense, in a three-dimensional space of coupling constants. The observed configurations of several Si surfaces are consistent with this picture. One of these fixed lines also describes one-dimensional quantum particles with fractional exclusion statistics. The featureless steps of a vicinal surface can therefore be thought of as a realization of fractional-statistics particles, possibly with additional short-range interactions.

Early time behavior of the order parameter coupled to a conserved density: A study in a semi-infinite geometry

We study the short time behavior of the order parameter coupled to a conserved field in semi-infinite geometry. The short time exponent, obtained by solving the one loop differential equations for the conserved density and the order parameter, agrees with the prediction from a scaling argument based on short distance expansion. The scaling analysis further shows that this exponent satisfies a scaling relation similar to that known in the case of a nonconserved order parameter without any coupling.

Incommensuration in quantum antiferromagnetic chain

A dimerized quantum Heisenberg or XY antiferromagnetic chain has a gap in the spectrum. We show that a weak incommensurate modulation around a dimerized chain produces a zero temperature quantum critical point. As the incommensuration wavelength is varied, there is a transition to a modulated gapless state. The critical behaviour is in the universality class of the classical commensurate-incommensurate (Pokrovsky-Talapov) transition. An analogous metal-insulator transition can also take place for an incommensurate chain.

Van der Waals interaction between flux lines in High-T_c Superconductors

In anisotropic or layered superconductors thermal fluctuations as well as impurities induce a van der Waals (vdW) attraction between flux lines, as has recently been shown by Blatter and Geshkenbein in the thermal case [Phys. Rev. Lett. 77, 4958 (1996)] and by Mukherji and Nattermann in the disorder dominated case [Phys. Rev. Lett. 79, 139 (1997)]. This attraction together with the entropic or disorder induced repulsion has interesting consequences for the low field phase diagram. We present two derivations of the vdW attraction, one of which is based on an intuitive picture, the other one following from a systematic expansion of the free energy of two interacting flux lines. Both the thermal and the disorder dominated case are considered. In the thermal case in the absence of disorder, we use scaling arguments as well as a functional renormalization of the vortex-vortex interaction energy to calculate the effective Gibbs free energy on the scale of the mean flux line distance. We discuss the resulting low field phase diagram and make quantitative predictions for pure BiSCCO (Bi_2-Sr_2-CaCu_2-O_8). In the case with impurities, the Gibbs free energy is calculated on the basis of scaling arguments, allowing for a semi-quantitative discussion of the low-field, low-temperature phase diagram in the presence of impurities.

Nonlocality in kinetic roughening

We propose a phenomenological equation to describe kinetic roughening of a growing surface in presence of long range interactions. The roughness of the evolving surface depends on the long range feature, and several distinct scenarios of phase transitions are possible. Experimental implications are discussed.

Deadlocks and waiting times in traffic jam

In a city of right moving and upmoving cars with hardcore constraint, traffic jam occurs in the form of bands. We show how the bands are destroyed by a small number of strictly left moving cars yielding a deadlock phase with a rough edge of left cars. We also show that the probability of waiting time at a signal for a particular tagged car has a power law dependence on time, indicating the absence of any characteristic time scale for an emergent traffic jam. The exponent is same for both the band and the deadlock cases. The significances of these results are discussed.

Scaling of fluctuation for Directed polymers with random interaction

Using a finite size scaling form for reunion probability, we show numerically the existence of a binding-unbinding transition for Directed polymers with random interaction. The cases studied are (A1) two chains in 1+1 dimensions, (A2) two chains in 2+1 dimensions and (B) three chains in 1+1 dimensions. A similar finite size scaling form for fluctuation establishes a disorder induced transition with identical exponents for cases A2 and B. The length scale exponents in all the three cases are in agreement with previous exact renormalization group results.

Finite Size Correction In A Disordered System - A New Divergence

We show that the amplitude of the finite size correction term for the $n$th moment of the partition function, for randomly interacting directed polymers, diverges (on the high temperature side) as $(n_c - n)^{-r}$, as a critical moment $n_c$ is approached. The exponent $r$ is independent of temperature but does depend on the effective dimensionality. There is no such divergence on the low temperature side ($n>n_c)$.

Overlap, Disorder and Directed Polymers: A Renormalization Group Approach -

The overlap of a $d+1$ dimensional directed polymer of length $t$ in a random medium is studied using a Renormalization Group approach. In $d>2$ it vanishes at $T_c$ for $t\rightarrow \infty$ as $t^Σ$ where $Σ=[\frac{d-1}{3-2d}]\frac{d}{z}$ and $z$ is the transverse spatial rescaling exponent. The same formula holds in $d=1$ for any finite temperature and it agrees with previous numerical simulations at $d=1$. Among other results we also determine the scaling exponent for mutual repulsion of two chains in the random medium.
