Hydrodynamics from charged black branes

We extend the recent work on fluid-gravity correspondence to charged black-branes by determining the metric duals to arbitrary charged fluid configuration up to second order in the boundary derivative expansion. We also derive the energy-momentum tensor and the charge current for these configurations up to second order in the boundary derivative expansion. We find a new term in the charge current when there is a bulk Chern-Simons interaction thus resolving an earlier discrepancy between thermodynamics of charged rotating black holes and boundary hydrodynamics. We have also confirmed that all our expressions are covariant under boundary Weyl-transformations as expected.

Near horizon data and physical charges of extremal AdS black holes

We compute the physical charges and discuss the properties of a large class of five-dimensional extremal AdS black holes by using the near horizon data. Our examples include baryonic and electromagnetic black branes, as well as supersymmetric spinning black holes. In the presence of the gauge Chern-Simons term, the five-dimensional physical charges are the Page charges. We carry out the near horizon analysis and compute the four-dimensional charges of the corresponding black holes by using the entropy function formalism and show that they match the Page charges.

Geometry and Phase Structure of Non-Relativistic Branes

We use the solution generating technique, the TsT transformation, to obtain new solutions in type II string theory as well as in M-theory. We explicitly work out examples starting with rotating D3 and M2 branes as well as D1-D5-p system. Among a variety of solutions, we find many of them have asymptotic Schrödinger symmetry. We also device a new method of deriving free energy of black brane systems, which is more efficient than the Euclidean action procedure. We test our method on known examples before applying it to new asymptotically Schrödinger backgrounds. We study phase structure of these backgrounds by analysing the free energy thus derived.

Moduli and electromagnetic black brane holography

We investigate the thermodynamic and hydrodynamic properties of 4-dimensional gauge theories with finite electric charge density in the presence of a constant magnetic field. Their gravity duals are planar magnetically and electrically charged AdS black holes in theories that contain a gauge Chern-Simons term. We present a careful analysis of the near horizon geometry of these black branes at finite and zero temperature for the case of a scalar field non-minimally coupled to the electromagnetic field. With the knowledge of the near horizon data, we obtain analytic expressions for the shear viscosity coefficient and entropy density, and also study the effect of a generic set of four derivative interactions on their ratio. We also comment on the attractor flows of the extremal solutions.

Nonlinear Hydrodynamics from Flow of Retarded Green's Function

We study the radial flow of retarded Green's function of energy-momentum tensor and $R$-current of dual gauge theory in presence of generic higher derivative terms in bulk Lagrangian. These are first order non-linear Riccati equations. We solve these flow equations analytically and obtain second order transport coefficients of boundary plasma. This way of computing transport coefficients has an advantage over usual Kubo approach. The non-linear equation turns out to be a linear first order equation when we study the Green's function perturbatively in momentum. We consider several examples including $Weyl^4$ term and generic four derivative terms in bulk. We also study the flow equations for $R$-charged black holes and obtain exact expressions for second order transport coefficients for dual plasma in presence of arbitrary chemical potentials. Finally we obtain higher derivative corrections to second order transport coefficients of boundary theory dual to five dimensional gauge supergravity.

Investigating stability of a class of black hole spacetimes under Ricci flow

We prove the linear stability of Schwarzschild-Tangherlini spacetimes and their Anti-de Sitter counterparts under Ricci flow for a special class of perturbations. This is useful in the choice of suitable initial conditions in numerical Ricci-flow-based algorithms for obtaining new solutions to the Einstein equation when the cosmological constant is zero or negative. The Ricci flow is a first-order renormalization group (RG) flow in string theory, and its solutions are believed to approximate string field theory processes in certain cases. Thus this result offers insights into the off-shell stability of these Euclidean black hole geometries in string theory, as well as in the Euclidean path integral approach to quantum gravity.

Near-Horizon Analysis of $η/s$

It is now well understood that the coefficient of shear viscosity of boundary fluid can be obtained from the horizon values of the effective coupling of transverse graviton in bulk spacetime. In this paper we observe that to find the shear viscosity coefficient it is sufficient to know only the near horizon geometry of the black hole spacetime. One does not need to know the full analytic solution. We consider several examples including non-trivial matter (dilaton, gauge fields) coupled to gravity in presence of higher derivative terms and calculate shear viscosity for both extremal and non-extremal black holes only studying the near horizon geometry. In particular, we consider higher derivative corrections to extremal R-charged black holes and compute $η/s$ in presence of three independent charges. We also consider asymptotically Lifshitz spacetime whose dual black hole geometry can not be found analytically. We study the near horizon behaviour of these black holes and find $η/s$ for its dual plasma at Lifshitz fixed point.

Shear Viscosity to Entropy Density Ratio in Six Derivative Gravity

We calculate shear viscosity to entropy density ratio in presence of four derivative (with coefficient $α'$) and six derivative (with coefficient $α'^2$) terms in bulk action. In general, there can be three possible four derivative terms and ten possible six derivative terms in the Lagrangian. Among them two four derivative and eight six derivative terms are ambiguous, i.e., these terms can be removed from the action by suitable field redefinitions. Rest are unambiguous. According to the AdS/CFT correspondence all the unambiguous coefficients (coefficients of unambiguous terms) can be fixed in terms of field theory parameters. Therefore, any measurable quantities of boundary theory, for example shear viscosity to entropy density ratio, when calculated holographically can be expressed in terms of unambiguous coefficients in the bulk theory (or equivalently in terms of boundary parameters). We calculate $η/s$ for generic six derivative gravity and find that apparently it depends on few ambiguous coefficients at order $α'^2$. We calculate six derivative corrections to central charges $a$ and $c$ and express $η/s$ in terms of these central charges and unambiguous coefficients in the bulk theory.

Higher Derivative Corrections to Shear Viscosity from Graviton's Effective Coupling

The shear viscosity coefficient of strongly coupled boundary gauge theory plasma depends on the horizon value of the effective coupling of transverse graviton moving in black hole background. The proof for the above statement is based on the canonical form of graviton's action. But in presence of generic higher derivative terms in the bulk Lagrangian the action is no longer canonical. We give a procedure to find an effective action for graviton (to first order in coefficient of higher derivative term) in canonical form in presence of any arbitrary higher derivative terms in the bulk. From that effective action we find the effective coupling constant for transverse graviton which in general depends on the radial coordinate $r$. We also argue that horizon value of this effective coupling is related to the shear viscosity coefficient of the boundary fluid in higher derivative gravity. We explicitly check this procedure for two specific examples: (1) four derivative action and (2) eight derivative action ($Weyl^4$ term). For both cases we show that our results for shear viscosity coefficient (up to first order in coefficient of higher derivative term) completely agree with the existing results in the literature.

(Un)attractor black holes in higher derivative AdS gravity

We investigate five-dimensional static (non-)extremal black hole solutions in higher derivative Anti-de Sitter gravity theories with neutral scalars non-minimally coupled to gauge fields. We explicitly identify the boundary counterterms to regularize the gravitational action and the stress tensor. We illustrate these results by applying the method of holographic renormalization to computing thermodynamical properties in several concrete examples. We also construct numerical extremal black hole solutions and discuss the attractor mechanism by using the entropy function formalism.

Higher Derivative Corrections to Locally Black Brane Metrics

In this paper we generalize the construction of locally boosted black brane space time to higher derivative gravities. We consider the Gauss-Bonnet term (with coefficient $α'$) as a toy example. We find the solution to the $α'$ corrected Einstein equations to first order in the boundary derivative expansion. This allows us to find the $α'$ corrections to the boundary stress tensor in the presence of the Gauss-Bonnet term in the bulk action. We therefore obtain the ratio of shear viscosity to entropy which agrees with other methods of computation in the literature.

Free Fermions and Thermal AdS/CFT

The dynamics of finite temperature U(N) gauge theories on $S^3$ can be described, at weak coupling, by an effective unitary matrix model. Here we present an exact solution to these models, for any value of $N$, in terms of a sum over representations. Taking the large $N$ limit of this solution provides a new perspective on the deconfinement transition which is supposed to be dual to the Hawking-Page transition. The large $N$ phase transition manifests itself here in a manner similar to the Douglas-Kazakov phase transition in 2d Yang-Mills theory. We carry out a complete analysis of the saddle representation in the simplest case involving only the order parameter ${\rm Tr}U$. We find that the saddle points corresponding to thermal $AdS$, the small black hole and the large black hole can all be described in terms of free fermions. They all admit a simple phase space description {\it a la} the BPS geometries of Lin, Lunin and Maldacena.

Phase Transition of Electrically Charged Ricci-flat Black Holes

We study phase transition between electrically charged Ricci-flat black holes and AdS soliton spacetime of Horowitz and Myers in five dimensions. Boundary topology for both of them is $S^1 \times S^1 \times R^2$. We consider Reissner-Nordstrom black hole and R-charged black holes and find that phase transition of these black holes to AdS soliton spacetime depends on the relative size of two boundary circles. We also perform the stability analysis for these black holes. In order to use the AdS/CFT correspondence, we work in the grand canonical ensemble.

On Euclidean and Noetherian Entropies in AdS Space

We examine the Euclidean action approach, as well as that of Wald, to the entropy of black holes in asymptotically $AdS$ spaces. From the point of view of holography these two approaches are somewhat complementary in spirit and it is not obvious why they should give the same answer in the presence of arbitrary higher derivative gravity corrections. For the case of the $AdS_5$ Schwarzschild black hole, we explicitly study the leading correction to the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy in the presence of a variety of higher derivative corrections studied in the literature, including the Type IIB $R^4$ term. We find a non-trivial agreement between the two approaches in every case. Finally, we give a general way of understanding the equivalence of these two approaches.
