Quantum nucleation of black hole mimickers via chaos dominated tunneling

Black hole mimickers, ultracompact horizonless objects, have been proposed as alternatives to black holes in a variety of settings, including extensions of general relativity and scenarios involving matter sectors beyond the Standard Model. Their formation in gravitational collapse of matter requires quantum mechanical tunneling to occur on a length scale of the order of the Schwarzschild radius of the corresponding black hole. We propose a mechanism, based on multichannel enhancement catalyzed by quantum chaotic dynamics, that can dramatically amplify the quantum mechanical transmission across a tunneling barrier. We explore, in particular, how the nucleation of a string theoretic black shell is enhanced via this mechanism. We anticipate similar results to hold for other proposed black hole mimickers.

Weak gravity at micron scales from dark bubble cosmology and its cosmological consequences

The dark bubble model makes a positive cosmological constant natural in string theory, and predicts several new physical phenomena within reach in the near future. In this paper we study the experimental consequences of the model for the strength of gravity at scales of order $10^{-5}$m. Contrary to other models of gravity involving extra dimensions, the dark bubble model predicts gravity to become weaker rather than stronger at small scales, compared to Newtonian gravity. In particular, we provide explicit predictions of measurable deviations using table top experiments. We also show how the same effect reduces the effective force of gravity at high energy densities in cosmology, leading to a period of early inflation without the need for anything beyond radiation. We also discuss the quantum origin of the universe with a 5D black hole acting as a catalyst for the nucleation of the dark bubble and how it accounts for the present matter content in the universe. This leads to a prediction of $Ω_c \approx 5\times 10^{-4}$ for a positive curvature of the universe, suggesting an explanation of the why-now-problem of the cosmological constant. We end by speculating on how to incorporate AdS black shells as black hole mimickers within the dark bubble model.

Dark bubbles, dark dimensions and fat gravitons

The dark bubble model explains the existence of a positive cosmological constant by making explicit use of the instabilities underlying the de Sitter swampland conjectures to make the accelerated expansion of the universe inevitable. A distinctive consequence of the construction is a unique hierarchy connecting cosmological, gravitational, string, and higher-dimensional scales. In particular, the model naturally predicts the existence of a dark dimension of micron size, an idea that has been argued for on independent grounds in the literature. The same framework also predicts a weakening of gravity at distances of order the dark-dimension scale, leading to a fading of the gravitational force at micron distances. We argue that the dark bubble therefore provides a concrete realization of both the dark dimension proposal and Sundrum's fat graviton scenario, in which gravity effectively ceases to probe shorter distances. Additional predictions include a string scale of order tens of TeV and a measurable positive spatial curvature of the universe. We review these key aspects of the model, discuss their implications for gravity and cosmology, and highlight its key predictions.

Generic EFT-motivated beyond General Relativity gravitational wave tests and their curvature dependence: from observation to interpretation

We present a "dictionary" to expedite the identification of potential deviations in gravitational waveforms from those predicted by General Relativity (GR) during the inspiral phase of black hole binaries. Assuming deviations from GR can be described by a local Effective Field Theory (EFT) formulated in terms of curvature operators (and possibly additional scalar fields), this dictionary characterizes how deviations scale with the masses of the binary components and identifies the leading order Post-Newtonian corrections in generic theories constructed within the EFT framework. By establishing a direct connection between observations and candidate theories beyond GR, this dictionary also aids in distinguishing genuine physical effects from systematic errors. These results can be readily incorporated into essentially all existing tests for the inspiral regime and, in particular, facilitate a more efficient combination of data from multiple events.

Black hole mimickers: from theory to observation

The black hole paradigm, while remarkably successful, raises fundamental questions-both classical and quantum-about the nature of spacetime, horizons, and singularities. Black hole mimickers, horizonless ultra-compact objects, have emerged as potential alternatives that seek to resolve some of these puzzles while remaining consistent with current observational constraints. Recent breakthroughs in gravitational-wave astronomy and horizon-scale electromagnetic imaging have opened new avenues to test this paradigm-making this an opportune moment to systematically investigate such alternatives. This vision document presents a snapshot of the field as discussed at the Black Hole Mimickers: From Theory to Observation workshop, where experts from gravitational wave astronomy, very long baseline interferometry, numerical and mathematical relativity, and high-energy physics converged to assess the current frontiers. By highlighting key open questions and proposing concrete pathways forward, this document aims to guide future efforts to probe the nature of compact objects. As the field stands at the crossroads of theoretical innovation and observational breakthroughs, we outline strategies to harness upcoming observational capabilities to fundamentally test the black hole paradigm.

Proving the 6d a-theorem with the double affine Grassmannian

This paper contains two results of independent interest, the first being more mathematical in nature whereas the second more physical. We first show that the hierarchy of Higgs branch RG flows between the 6d $(1,0)$ SCFTs known as A-type orbi-instantons is given by the Hasse diagram of certain strata and transverse slices in the double affine Grassmannian of $E_8$. Secondly, we leverage the partial order naturally defined on this Hasse diagram to prove the $a$-theorem for orbi-instanton Higgs branch RG flows, thereby exhausting the list of $c$-theorems in the even-dimensional (supersymmetric) setting.

Exploring Black Hole Mimickers: Electromagnetic and Gravitational Signatures of AdS Black Shells

We study electromagnetic and gravitational properties of AdS black shells (also referred to as AdS black bubbles) -- a class of quantum gravity motivated black hole mimickers, that in the classical limit are described as ultra compact shells of matter. We find that their electromagnetic properties are remarkably similar to black holes. We then discuss the extent to which these objects are distinguishable from black holes, both for intrinsic interest within the black shell model, and as a guide for similar efforts in other sub-classes of exotic compact objects (ECOs). We study photon rings and lensing band characteristics, relevant for very large baseline inteferometry (VLBI) observations, as well as gravitational wave observables -- quasinormal modes in the eikonal limit and the static tidal Love number for non-spinning shells -- relevant for ongoing and upcoming gravitational wave observations.

The Higgs branch of Heterotic ALE instantons

We begin a study of the Higgs branch of six-dimensional $(1,0)$ little string theories governing the worldvolumes of heterotic ALE instantons. We give a description of this space by constructing the corresponding magnetic quiver. The latter is a three-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=4$ quiver gauge theory that flows in the infrared to a fixed point whose quantum corrected Coulomb branches is the Higgs branch of the six-dimensional theory of interest. We present results for both types of heterotic strings, and mostly for $\mathbb C^2/\mathbb Z_k$ ALE spaces. Our analysis is valid both in the absence and in the presence of small instantons. Along the way, we also describe small $SO(32)$ instanton transitions in terms of the corresponding magnetic quiver, which parallels a similar treatment of the small $E_8$ instanton transitions in the context of the $E_8\times E_8$ heterotic string.

Horizonless black hole mimickers with spin

In this paper, we study rotating horizon less black shells as an alternative to Kerr black holes. We make use of Ernst's potential to solve the Einstein equations perturbatively in the angular momentum $a$. Calculating to order $a^6$, we find accurate predictions up to about $a=0.45$, where the quadrupole moment is predicted to be around $1\%$ higher than its Kerr value; higher multipole moments show deviation of the order of $\sim 10\%$. Our analysis takes into account deformations of the black shells, and we propose that it can be used for numerical simulations comparing gravitational waves emitted by orbiting black shells with those emitted by orbiting black holes. In our analysis, we make extensive use of relativistic hydrodynamics, and discover an intricate structure of circulating flows of fluid and heat on the black shell, sustained by the Unruh effect.

A new vista on the Heterotic Moduli Space from Six and Three Dimensions

We settle a long-standing question about the hypermultiplet moduli spaces of the heterotic strings on ALE singularities. These heterotic backgrounds are specified by the singularity type, an instanton number, and a (nontrivial) flat connection at infinity. Building on their interpretation as six-dimensional theories, we determine a class of three-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=4$ quiver gauge theories whose quantum corrected Coulomb branch coincides with the exact heterotic hypermultiplet moduli space.

Features of a dark energy model in string theory

In this paper we clear up misconceptions concerning the dark bubble model as a realization of dark energy in string theory. In particular we point out important differences with Randall-Sundrum, and explain why gravity neither is, nor need to be, localized on the dark bubble.

Shedding light on dark bubble cosmology

Dark bubble cosmology is an alternative paradigm to compactification, which can circumvent issues of moduli stabilization and scale separation. In this paper we investigate how electromagnetic fields can be incorporated in this framework. Worldvolume fields backreact on the ambient universe in which the bubble expands, which in turn affects the energy-momentum distribution and the effective gravity induced on the brane. We compute these effects, showing that the resulting four-dimensional cosmology consistently includes electromagnetic waves.

Hierarchies of RG flows in 6d $(1,0)$ massive E-strings

We extend the analysis of arXiv:2208.11703 to the 6d $(1,0)$ SCFTs known as massive E-string theories, which can be engineered in massive Type IIA with $8-n_0<8$ D8-branes close to an O8$^-$ (or O8$^*$ if $n_0=8,9$). For each choice of $n_0=1,\ldots,9$ the massive $E_{1+(8-n_0)}$-strings (including the more exotic $\tilde{E}_1$ and $E_0$) are classified by constrained $E_8$ Kac labels, i.e. a subset of $\text{Hom}(\mathbb{Z}_k,E_8)$, from which one can read off the flavor subalgebra of $E_{1+(8-n_0)}$ of each SCFT. We construct hierarchies for two types of Higgs branch RG flows: flows between massive theories defined by the same $n_0$ but different labels; flows between massive theories with different $n_0$. These latter flows are triggered by T-brane vev's for the right $\mathrm{SU}$ factor of the SCFT global symmetry, whose rank is a function of both $k$ and $n_0$, a situation which has so far remained vastly unexplored.

Hierarchy of RG flows in 6d $(1,0)$ orbi-instantons

$N$ M5-branes probing the intersection between the orbifold $\mathbb{C}^2/Γ_\text{ADE}$ and an $E_8$ wall give rise to 6d $(1,0)$ SCFTs known as ADE-type orbi-instantons. At fixed $N$ and order of the orbifold, each element of $\text{Hom}(Γ_\text{ADE},E_8)$ defines a different SCFT. The SCFTs are connected by Higgs branch RG flows, which generically reduce the flavor symmetry of the UV fixed point. We determine the full hierarchy of these RG flows for type A, i.e. $\mathbb{C}^2/\mathbb{Z}_k$, for any value of $N$ and $k$. The hierarchy takes the form of an intricate Hasse diagram: each node represents an IR orbi-instanton (homomorphism), and each edge an allowed flow, compatibly with the 6d $a$-theorem. The partial order is defined via quiver subtraction of the 3d magnetic quivers associated with the 6d SCFTs, which is equivalent to performing a so-called Kraft-Procesi transition between homomorphisms.

Black holes with spindles at the horizon

We construct $AdS_4 \times Σ$ and $AdS_2 \times Σ\times Σ_g$ solutions in F(4) gauged supergravity in six dimensions, where $Σ$ is a two dimensional manifold of non-constant curvature with conical singularities at its two poles, called a spindle, and $Σ_g$ is a constant curvature Riemann surface of genus g. We find that the first solution realizes a "topologically topological twist", while the second class of solutions gives rise to an "anti twist". We compute the holographic free energy of the $AdS_4 \times Σ$ solution and find that it matches the entropy computed by extremizing an entropy functional that is constructed by gluing gravitational blocks. For the $AdS_2 \times Σ\times Σ_g$ solution, we find that the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy is reproduced by extremizing an appropriately defined entropy functional, which leads us to conjecture that this solution is dual to a three dimensional SCFT on a spindle. A class of the $AdS_2 \times Σ\times Σ_g$ solutions can be embedded in four dimensional T3 gauged supergravity, which is a subtruncation of the six dimensional theory.

On the Stability of String Theory Vacua

Vacuum compactifications may suffer from instabilities under small perturbations or tunnel effects; both are difficult to analyze. In this paper we consider the issue from a higher-dimensional perspective. We first look at how stability works for supersymmetric vacua, where it is widely expected to hold. We first show that the nucleation of brane bubbles in type II AdS compactifications is forbidden in the probe approximation by a simple argument involving pure spinors and calibrations. We then adapt familiar positive-energy theorems directly to M-theory and type II supergravity, rather than to their effective lower-dimensional reductions, also showing how to consistently include localised sources. We finally initiate an analysis of how these arguments might be extended to non-supersymmetric vacua. In M-theory, at the lower-derivative level, we find that the most natural modifications fail to stabilize the skew-whiffed and Englert vacua.

Re-examining the stability of rotating horizonless black shells mimicking Kerr black holes

In arXiv:1705.10172 a string theory inspired alternative to gravitational collapse was proposed, consisting of a bubble of AdS space made up of ingredients from string theory. These ultra compact objects are $9/8$ times the size of the corresponding Schwarzschild black hole, but being within the photosphere are almost indistinguishable from them. Slowly rotating counterparts of these black shells were constructed in arXiv:1712.00511, which closely mimic a Kerr black hole, but have a quadrupole moment that differs from Kerr. Recently, arXiv:2109.09814 studied the dynamical stability of the stationary black shells against radial perturbations and accretion of matter, and examined a two parameter family of fluxes required for stability. In this paper, we re-examine the rotating black shells with particular attention to the constraints imposed by this dynamical analysis for non-rotating shells. Extrapolating these results to rotating shells, we find that they can indeed support themselves at a critical point in the gravitational potential. Additionally, requiring that they settle back to their new Buchdahl radius after accreting matter, uniquely fixes the fluxes required for dynamical stability. The flux parameters turn out to have an extremely simple form, and fulfil one of the constraints for perturbative radial stability while exactly saturating the other. The preferred quadrupole moment that we find, given some physical assumptions, is 7% less than Kerr.
