1.1 kW, 100 Hz room-temperature diode-pumped nanosecond laser by water immersion cooling

We report a room-temperature diode-pumped solid-state laser by water immersion cooling, which delivers a pulse energy of 11 J at the repetition rate of 100 Hz and the pulse duration of 7 ns, while the beam quality factor is 2.6 times the diffraction limit. To the best of our knowledge, this represents the highest performance achieved for room-temperature nanosecond lasers operating above 100 Hz, which demonstrates the great potentials of room-temperature immersion-cooled nanosecond active mirror lasers.

A Survey of Freshness-Aware Wireless Networking with Reinforcement Learning

The age of information (AoI) has become a central measure of data freshness in modern wireless systems, yet existing surveys either focus on classical AoI formulations or provide broad discussions of reinforcement learning (RL) in wireless networks without addressing freshness as a unified learning problem. Motivated by this gap, this survey examines RL specifically through the lens of AoI and generalized freshness optimization. We organize AoI and its variants into native, function-based, and application-oriented families, providing a clearer view of how freshness should be modeled in B5G and 6G systems. Building on this foundation, we introduce a policy-centric taxonomy that reflects the decisions most relevant to freshness, consisting of update-control RL, medium-access RL, risk-sensitive RL, and multi-agent RL. This structure provides a coherent framework for understanding how learning can support sampling, scheduling, trajectory planning, medium access, and distributed coordination. We further synthesize recent progress in RL-driven freshness control and highlight open challenges related to delayed decision processes, stochastic variability, and cross-layer design. The goal is to establish a unified foundation for learning-based freshness optimization in next-generation wireless networks.

Physics Symbolic Learner for Discovering Ground-Motion Models Via NGA-West2 Database

Ground-motion model (GMM) is the basis of many earthquake engineering studies. In this study, a novel physics-informed symbolic learner (PISL) method based on the Nest Generation Attenuation-West2 database is proposed to automatically discover mathematical equation operators as symbols. The sequential threshold ridge regression algorithm is utilized to distill a concise and interpretable explicit characterization of complex systems of ground motions. In addition to the basic variables retrieved from previous GMMs, the current PISL incorporates two a priori physical conditions, namely, distance and amplitude saturation. GMMs developed using the PISL, an empirical regression method (ERM), and an artificial neural network (ANN) are compared in terms of residuals and extrapolation based on obtained data of peak ground acceleration and velocity. The results show that the inter- and intra-event standard deviations of the three methods are similar. The functional form of the PISL is more concise than that of the ERM and ANN. The extrapolation capability of the PISL is more accurate than that of the ANN. The PISL-GMM used in this study provide a new paradigm of regression that considers both physical and data-driven machine learning and can be used to identify the implied physical relationships and prediction equations of ground motion variables in different regions.

Sparse Portfolio Selection via Quasi-Norm Regularization

In this paper, we propose $\ell_p$-norm regularized models to seek near-optimal sparse portfolios. These sparse solutions reduce the complexity of portfolio implementation and management. Theoretical results are established to guarantee the sparsity of the second-order KKT points of the $\ell_p$-norm regularized models. More interestingly, we present a theory that relates sparsity of the KKT points with Projected correlation and Projected Sharpe ratio. We also design an interior point algorithm to obtain an approximate second-order KKT solution of the $\ell_p$-norm models in polynomial time with a fixed error tolerance, and then test our $\ell_p$-norm modes on S&P 500 (2008-2012) data and international market data.\ The computational results illustrate that the $\ell_p$-norm regularized models can generate portfolios of any desired sparsity with portfolio variance and portfolio return comparable to those of the unregularized Markowitz model with cardinality constraint. Our analysis of a combined model lead us to conclude that sparsity is not directly related to overfitting at all. Instead, we find that sparsity moderates overfitting only indirectly. A combined $\ell_1$-$\ell_p$ model shows that the proper choose of leverage, which is the amount of additional buying-power generated by selling short can mitigate overfitting; A combined $\ell_2$-$\ell_p$ model is able to produce extremely high performing portfolios that exceeded the 1/N strategy and all $\ell_1$ and $\ell_2$ regularized portfolios.
