Homotopy decomposition of a suspended real toric space

We give $p$-local homotopy decompositions of the suspensions of real toric spaces for odd primes $p$. Our decomposition is compatible with the one given by Bahri, Bendersky, Cohen, and Gitler for the suspension of the corresponding real moment-angle complex, or more generally, the polyhedral product. As an application, we obtain a stable rigidity property for real toric spaces.

Classification of real Bott manifolds and acyclic digraphs

We completely characterize real Bott manifolds up to affine diffeomorphism in terms of three simple matrix operations on square binary matrices obtained from strictly upper triangular matrices by permuting rows and columns simultaneously. We also prove that any graded ring isomorphism between the cohomology rings of real Bott manifolds with $\mathbb Z/2$ coefficients is induced by an affine diffeomorphism between the real Bott manifolds. Our characterization can also be described in terms of graph operations on directed acyclic graphs. Using this combinatorial interpretation, we prove that the decomposition of a real Bott manifold into a product of indecomposable real Bott manifolds is unique up to permutations of the indecomposable factors. Finally, we produce some numerical invariants of real Bott manifolds from the viewpoint of graph theory and discuss their topological meaning. As a by-product, we prove that the toral rank conjecture holds for real Bott manifolds.

Every cohomology ring isomorphism between two non-singular complete toric varieties and quasitoric manifolds, respectively, with second Betti number $2$ is realizable by a diffeomorphism and homeomorphism, respectively.

Wedge operations and torus symmetries II

A fundamental idea in toric topology is that classes of manifolds with well-behaved torus actions (simply, toric spaces) are classified by pairs of simplicial complexes and (non-singular) characteristic maps. The authors in their previous paper provided a new way to find all characteristic maps on a simplicial complex $K(J)$ obtainable by a sequence of wedgings from $K$. The main idea was that characteristic maps on $K$ theoretically determine all possible characteristic maps on a wedge of $K$. In this work, we further develop our previous work for classification of toric spaces. For a star-shaped simplicial sphere $K$ of dimension $n-1$ with $m$ vertices, the Picard number $\operatorname{Pic}(K)$ of $K$ is $m-n$. We refer to $K$ a seed if $K$ cannot be obtained by wedgings. First, we show that, for a fixed positive integer $\ell$, there are at most finitely many seeds of Picard number $\ell$ supporting characteristic maps. As a corollary, the conjecture proposed by V. V. Batyrev in 1991 is solved affirmatively. Second, we investigate a systematic way to find all characteristic maps on $K(J)$ using combinatorial objects called (realizable) puzzles that only depend on a seed $K$. These two facts lead to a practical way to classify the toric spaces of fixed Picard number.

Wedge operations and a new family of projective toric manifolds

Let $P_m(J)$ denote a simplicial complex obtainable from consecutive wedge operations from an $m$-gon. In this paper, we completely classify toric manifolds over $P_m(J)$ and prove that all of them are projective. As a consequence, we provide an infinite family of projective toric manifolds.

Invariance of Pontrjagin classes for Bott manifolds

A Bott manifold is the total space of some iterated $\mathbb C P^1$-bundle over a point. We prove that any graded ring isomorphism between the cohomology rings of two Bott manifolds preserves their Pontrjagin classes. Moreover, we prove that such an isomorphism is induced from a diffeomorphism if the Bott manifolds are $\mathbb Z/2$-trivial, where a Bott manifold is called $\mathbb Z/2$-trivial if its cohomology ring with $\mathbb Z/2$-coefficient is isomorphic to that of a product of $\mathbb C P^1$'s.

Wedge operations and torus symmetries

A fundamental result of toric geometry is that there is a bijection between toric varieties and fans. More generally, it is known that some class of manifolds having well-behaved torus actions, called topological toric manifolds $M^{2n}$, can be classified in terms of combinatorial data containing simplicial complexes with $m$ vertices. We remark that topological toric manifolds are a generalization of smooth toric varieties. The number $m-n$ is known as the Picard number when $M^{2n}$ is a {compact smooth} toric variety. In this paper, we investigate the relationship between the topological toric manifolds over a simplicial complex $K$ and those over the complex obtained by simplicial wedge operations from $K$. As applications, we do the following. 1. We classify smooth toric varieties of Picard number 3. This is a reproving of a result of Batyrev. 2. We give a new and complete proof of projectivity of smooth toric varieties of Picard number 3 originally proved by Kleinschmidt and Sturmfels. 3. We find a criterion for a toric variety over the join of boundaries of simplices to be projective. When the toric variety is smooth, it is known as a generalized Bott manifold which is always projective. 4. We classify and enumerate real topological toric manifolds when $m-n=3$. 5. When $m-n \leq 3$, any real topological toric manifold is realizable as fixed points of the conjugation of a topological toric manifold.

On the cohomology and their torsion of real toric objects

In this paper, we do the two things. 1. We present a formula to compute the rational cohomology ring of a real topological toric manifold, and thus that of a small cover or a real toric manifold, which implies the formula of Suciu and Trevisan. Furthermore, the formula also works for other coefficient $\mathbb{Z}_q = \mathbb{Z}/q\mathbb{Z}$, where $q$ is a positive odd integer. 2. We construct infinitely many real toric manifolds and small covers whose integral cohomology have a $q$-torsion for any positive odd integer $q$.

A new graph invariant arises in toric topology

In this paper, we introduce new combinatorial invariants of any finite simple graph, which arise in toric topology. We compute the $i$-th (rational) Betti number and Euler characteristic of the real toric variety associated to a graph associahedron $P_{\B(G)}$. They can be calculated by a purely combinatorial method (in terms of graphs) and are named $a_i(G)$ and $b(G)$, respectively. To our surprise, for specific families of the graph $G$, our invariants are deeply related to well-known combinatorial sequences such as the Catalan numbers and Euler zigzag numbers.

Projective bundles over toric surfaces

Let $E$ be the Whitney sum of complex line bundles over a topological space $X$. Then, the projectivization $P(E)$ of $E$ is called a \emph{projective bundle} over $X$. If $X$ is a non-singular complete toric variety, so is $P(E)$. In this paper, we show that the cohomology ring of a non-singular projective toric variety $M$ determines whether it admits a projective bundle structure over a non-singular complete toric surface. In addition, we show that two 6-dimensional projective bundles over 4-dimensional quasitoric manifolds are diffeomorphic if their cohomology rings are isomorphic as graded rings. Furthermore, we study the smooth classification of higher dimensional projective bundles over 4-dimensional quasitoric manifolds.

Torus actions on cohomology complex generalized Bott manifolds

A torus manifold is a closed smooth manifold of dimension $2n$ having an effective smooth $T^n = (S^1)^n$-action with non-empty fixed points. Petrie \cite{petrie:1973} has shown that any homotopy equivalence between a complex projective space $\CP^n$ and a torus manifold homotopy equivalent to $\CP^n$ preserves their Pontrjagin classes. A \emph{generalized Bott manifold} is a closed smooth manifold obtained as the total space of an iterated complex projective space bundles over a point, where each fibration is a projectivization of the Whitney sum of a finite many complex line bundles. For instance, we obtain a product of complex projective spaces if all fibrations are trivial. If each fiber is $\CP^1$, then we call it an (ordinary) \emph{Bott manifold}. In this paper, we investigate the invariance of Pontrjagin classes for torus manifolds whose cohomology ring is isomorphic to that of generalized Bott manifolds. We show that any cohomology ring isomorphism between two torus manifolds whose cohomology ring is isomorphic to that of a product of projective spaces preserves their Pontrjagin classes, which generalizes the Petrie's theorem. In addition, we show that any cohomology ring isomorphism between two torus cohomology Bott manifolds preserves their Pontrjagin classes. As a corollary, there are at most a finite number of torus manifolds homotopy equivalent to either a given product of complex projective space or a given Bott manifold.

We show that three- and four-stage Bott manifolds are classified up to diffeomorphism by their integral cohomology rings. In addition, any cohomology ring isomorphism between two three-stage Bott manifolds can be realized by a diffeomorphism between the Bott manifolds.

Topological classification of quasitoric manifolds with the second Betti number 2

A quasitoric manifold is a $2n$-dimensional compact smooth manifold with a locally standard action of an $n$-dimensional torus whose orbit space is a simple polytope. In this article, we classify quasitoric manifolds with the second Betti number $β_2=2$ topologically. Interestingly, they are distinguished by their cohomology rings up to homeomorphism.

Topological classification of torus manifolds which have codimension one extended actions

A toric manifold is a compact non-singular toric variety equipped with a natural half-dimensional compact torus action. A torus manifold is an oriented, closed, smooth manifold of dimension $2n$ with an effective action of a compact torus $T^{n}$ having a non-empty fixed point set. Hence, a torus manifold can be thought of as a generalization of a toric manifold. In the present paper, we focus on a certain class $\mM$ in the family of torus manifolds with codimension one extended actions, and we give a topological classification of $\mM$. As a result, their topological types are completely determined by their cohomology rings and real characteristic classes. The problem whether the cohomology ring determines the topological type of a toric manifold or not is one of the most interesting open problems in toric topology. One can also ask this problem for the class of torus manifolds even if its orbit spaces are highly structured. Our results provide a negative answer to this problem for torus manifolds. However, we find a sub-class of torus manifolds with codimension one extended actions which is not in the class of toric manifolds but which is classified by their cohomology rings.

The number of orientable small covers over cubes

We count orientable small covers over cubes. We also get estimates for $O_n/R_n$, where $O_n$ is the number of orientable small covers and $R_n$ is the number of all small covers over an $n$-cube up to the Davis-Januszkiewicz equivalence.

Real Bott manifolds and acyclic digraphs

Masuda (2008) provided the characterization of real Bott manifolds in terms of three operations on upper triangular matrices. We provide a combinatorial characterization of real Bott manifolds up to diffeomorphism in terms of operations on directed acyclic graphs. Our observation leads to several new invariants of real Bott manifolds.
