From Nested Soliton Crystals to Skyrmion Crystals in Chiral Magnets

We perform an exhaustive study of the parameter space of the chiral magnetic model with a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, an in-plane anisotropy term and an out-of-plane Zeeman magnetic field. We map out the phase diagram for the model and find a chiral soliton lattice hosted on a chiral soliton lattice as the ground state in a particular corner of the phase diagram. There is a smooth crossover, as opposed to a phase transition, to the skyrmion crystal lattice phase. Finally, we also discover excited composite soliton states such as an anti-skyrmion coexisting with a bimeron or an anti-bimeron.

$\texttt{cuSkyrmion}$: A CUDA-OpenGL framework for interactive simulation and visualization of nuclei as Skyrmions

We introduce $\texttt{cuSkyrmion}$, a 3-dimensional Skyrme model computation and visualization software, that is written in $\texttt{CUDA C}$ for rapid computation and visualization of especially the arrested Newton flow algorithm. The programme is interactive and lets the user construct Skyrmions either with configuration files, specifying coordinates, or simply in run-time using the keyboard and mouse. Rational map ansatz constituent Skyrmions can be inserted at any time and a random generator can produce a stochastic initial configuration. The software is composed into three main modules being a computational module, a rendering module and a main programme. The rendering/visualization module can readily be used by other computational modules and a $\texttt{Python}$-fork, $\texttt{skyrmion_solver}$, has been developed demonstrating the re-usability of the code.

Holographic Soliton Crystals for Dense Nuclear Matter and Neutron Stars

We construct a nuclear-matter equation of state (EOS) from holographic QCD in the Witten-Sakai-Sugimoto (WSS) model, going beyond the homogeneous ansatz by building dense baryonic matter more directly from the solitonic description of holographic baryons. Employing the two-baryon interaction potential obtained from the linearized soliton tails sourced in the curved background by point-like (core) instantons, we assemble an infinite face-centered cubic (FCC) crystal with nearest neighbors in the most attractive channel as an approximation to the quantum liquid of baryons and compute the energy density $\mathcal{E}(n_B)$, the chemical potential $μ_B$, and the pressure $P$. We calibrate the symmetric-matter EOS by fixing the 't Hooft coupling $λ$ and the WSS scale $M_{\rm KK}$ to saturation-density and onset-chemical-potential properties, and by including a quark-mass term to reproduce the physical pion mass $m_π=135\,\mathrm{MeV}$. This fit turns out to remain reasonably close to the parameters required by the vacuum meson sector, while their modification is consistent with Brown-Rho scaling in a dense medium, and the incompressibility at saturation is of the correct order of magnitude, both in clear contrast to the homogeneous approximation. We then extend to beta-equilibrated matter, using phenomenological input for the symmetry energy, and obtain hybrid EOS and neutron-star observables that are compatible with the NICER constraints.

Magnetic D-brane solitons: skyrmion strings ending on a Néel wall in chiral magnets

Magnetic skyrmions extended to three dimensions form string-like objects whose fundamental role remains largely unexplored. We show that skyrmion strings can terminate on a Néel-type domain wall (DW), realizing a magnetic analogue of a Dirichlet(D)-brane soliton. While an isolated Néel DW tends to rotate into a Bloch DW, the Néel DW is stabilized when a skyrmion string ends on it, by being transformed into a trumpet. Unlike field-theory D-branes, the Bloch-type DMI produces linear rather than logarithmic DW bending, and the strings retain finite width far from the DW, circumventing singular behavior. Furthermore, the repulsive interaction between strings allows periodic multi-junction solutions, yielding a square lattice of alternating strings and local DW deformations as well as separating Bloch points. These results establish magnetic skyrmion strings as fundamental strings that can end on a D-brane.

Creation of domain-wall skyrmions in chiral magnets with Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert dynamics and demagnetization

Absorption of an isolated bulk magnetic skyrmion into an empty domain wall in a chiral ferromagnetic system is studied using the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation with and without the demagnetization effect taken into account. The full phase diagram of creation versus repulsion or annihilation is mapped out in case of both Bloch-type and Néel-type DMI, with and without demagnetization. Finally, the unstable domain wall, realizable with a setup of several external magnets, contains the theoretical possibility of producing a 1-dimensional version of the Kibble-Zurek mechanism, which in turn can create a number of skyrmion-anti-skyrmion pairs engulfed in the domain wall: We denote them domain-wall-skyrmion-anti-domain-wall-skyrmion pairs.

Phase diagram of magnetic $S^3$ Skyrmions on three-dimensional lattices and the toroidal antiSkyrmion

Magnetic Skyrmions are planar solitons stabilized by the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) and realized in chiral magnets. We study their natural three-dimensional generalization: a sigma model from $\mathbb{R}^3$ to $S^3$ with a four-component magnetization vector, stabilized by a one-derivative term which is a generalized DMI. We utilize two SO(3)-invariant generalized DMIs discovered recently: an "$α$-term" supporting a spherically symmetric hedgehog Skyrmion and a "$β$-term" supporting an axially symmetric Skyrmion that splits into two half-Skyrmions connected by a magnetic string of negative tension, a phenomenon we call "anti-confinement". We derive a cubic-lattice discretization that reproduces both continuum theories at long wavelengths and use Monte Carlo simulations to map the finite-temperature phase diagram. We identify spin-spiral, magnetic-string-lattice, Skyrmion-lattice, and antiSkyrmion-lattice phases, as well as a mixed-topology regime with fractional $S^3$ charges localized at string bends. We find, for the first time in the literature to the best of our knowledge, a toroidal (anti-)soliton of unit charge. Our results establish a theoretical and computational framework for three-dimensional topological magnetic textures in systems whose order-parameter manifold is $S^3$.

Cartan connections for an infinite family of integrable vortices

An infinite family of integrable vortex equations is studied and related to the Cartan geometry of the underlying Riemann surfaces. This Cartan picture gives an interpretation of the vortex equations as the flatness of a non-Abelian connection. Solutions of the vortex equations also give rise to magnetic zero-modes for a certain Dirac operator on the lifted geometry. The family of integrable vortex equations is parametrised by a positive number $n$, that is equal to unity in the standard case and an integer in the case of polynomial vortex equations; finally, it may be extended to any positive real number.

Moduli spaces and breather dynamics of analytic solutions in Heisenberg exchange-free chiral magnets

We investigate the special case of the chiral magnet with vanishing Heisenberg exchange energy, whose axisymmetric Skyrmion solution has previously been found. The dynamical equations of this model look like inviscid fluid flow, and by investigating path lines of this flow we can construct explicit static and dynamic solutions. We find an infinite-dimensional family of static Skyrmions that are related to the axisymmetric Skyrmion by co-ordinate transformations thus discovering a new moduli space, and further infinite-dimensional families of axisymmetric and non-axisymmetric breather-like supercompactons.

Chiral non-Abelian domain walls in the Ginzburg-Landau theory

In this paper, we study chiral non-Abelian domain walls in a phase of unconventional vacua of the Ginzburg-Landau model for dense QCD, by considering a wider range of parameters space not directly deduced from QCD. The phase is characterized by asymmetric vacuum-expectation values (VEVs), for example with the left scalar field, corresponding to the left quark-quark condensate, having a nonvanishing VEV and the right field having a vanishing one. The domain wall soliton interpolates between this vacuum and another where the left and right scalar fields switch roles. We study this formal possibility, but not any mechanism to generate these vacua non-perturbatively at finite density or finite temperature. Using a strong-coupling, or sigma-model limit, we are able to reduce the full dynamical complex matrix valued equations of motion to the sine-Gordon, a generalization of the sine-Gordon and a generalization of the double sine-Gordon equations. In this limit, we prove nonexistence of domain walls in one of the vacua studied here and we find full numerical computations to converge to the sigma-model limit for many cases, with some exceptions that we discuss.

Creation of domain-wall Skyrmions in chiral magnets

We study the capture of a magnetic Skyrmion into a domain wall (DW) structure in chiral magnets and find that in the respective ground states of the DW and the Skyrmion, they repel each other. This means that an isolated magnetic Skyrmion cannot a priori enter the DW and become a DW-Skyrmion. However, rotating the DW's phase away from the stable phase may cause the successful capture and hence creation of a stable bound state of a magnetic Skyrmion and a DW: the DW-Skyrmion. At certain distances, the DW may also destroy the magnetic Skyrmion by inducing shrinkage of the latter. This happens as the isolated magnetic Skyrmion has negative DMI energy, whereas the DW-Skyrmion has positive DMI energy; in a finite range from the DW, the magnetic Skyrmion can be pushed to have vanishing DMI energy, for which it collapses to a point. En passant, we find the possibility of pair creation of a Skyrmion anti-DW-Skyrmion pair and a creation of more than one DW-Skyrmions by a Kibble-like mechanism.

Isospin asymmetry and neutron stars in V-QCD

Isospin asymmetric nuclear matter is introduced to V-QCD, a bottom-up holographic Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) model. Using a small isospin chemical potential we extract the symmetry energy in the model, finding excellent agreement with experimental results for some of the potentials. Extending the calculation for finite and arbitrary sized isospin chemical potentials, we construct beta-equilibrated neutron stars via the usual Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkov (TOV) equations. We find, pleasingly, that the neutron stars passing the mass/radius and tidal deformability constraints are those with the potentials that also lead to excellent symmetry energies.

Chiral non-Abelian vortex molecules in dense QCD

The color-flavor locked phase of high density QCD admits non-Abelian vortices, that are superfluid vortices with confined color-magnetic fluxes. Vortex solutions were thus far constructed in an axially symmetric Ansatz with common vortex winding in the left- and right-handed diquark condensates. In this paper, we explore vortex solutions without any Ansatz. In addition to axially symmetric configurations known before, we find that the axial symmetry is broken in certain parameter regions; in one case a single vortex is split into two chiral non-Abelian vortices, i.e. vortices with winding only in the left or right-handed diquark condensate, and they are connected by one or two domain walls forming a non-Abelian vortex molecule. In the other case, a chiral non-Abelian vortex molecule is confined inside a domain wall elongated to spatial infinity.

Higher-dimensional magnetic Skyrmions

We propose a generalization of the theory of magnetic Skyrmions in chiral magnets in two dimensions to a higher-dimensional theory with magnetic Skyrmions in three dimensions and an $S^3$ target space, requiring a 4-dimensional magnetization vector. A physical realization of our theory could be made using a synthetic dimension, recently promoted and realized in condensed matter physics. In the simplest incarnation of the theory, we find a Skyrmion and a sphaleron - the latter being an unstable soliton. Including also the Skyrme term in the theory enriches the spectrum to a small metastable Skyrmion, an unstable sphaleron and a large stable Skyrmion.

Backreacted Coulomb energy in the Skyrme model

The Skyrme model is extended with the Maxwell action and a source term for the gauge field. We consider the specialized case of vanishing isospin states, such that only an electric potential is turned on and study the backreaction onto the Skyrme fields. In particular, we study Skyrmions with baryon numbers B=4,8,12,16 and 40. We find, in agreement with physical expectations, that the Coulomb backreaction is most pronounced for large Skyrmions and find furthermore that the dynamics of the theory is more sensitive to the backreaction than the ground states (global minimizers of the energy). Calibrating the model to Carbon-12, we find excellent agreement of the masses of the studied Skyrmions - within 1.86% of experimental data. The Coulomb energies are slightly larger than phenomenological fits suggest, but only by about 3-22%, whereas the radii are within 15% errors, with the largest errors on the smallest baryon number (B=4) and the smallest errors on the large baryon numbers.

Magnetic Skyrmions: from lumps to supercompactons

The magnetic Skyrmion is described by one control parameter and one length scale. We study the two extreme limits of the control parameter - infinitely large and vanishing - and find that the magnetic Skyrmion becomes a "restricted" magnetic Skyrmion and an O(3) sigma model lump, respectively. Depending on the potential under consideration, the restricted limit manifests differently. In the case of the Zeeman term, the restricted magnetic Skyrmion becomes a "supercompacton" that develops a discontinuity, whereas for the Zeeman term to the power 3/2 it becomes a normal compacton. In both the lump and the restricted limit the solution is given in exact explicit form. We observe that the case of the Zeeman term squared, which can also be understood as a special combination of the Zeeman term and the easy-plane potential - realizable in the laboratory, the analytically exact solution for all values of the coupling - including the Bogomol'nyi-Prasad-Sommerfield (BPS) case - is also of the lump type. Finally, we notice that certain materials (e.g. Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$Si or Mn$_{1-x}$Fe$_x$Ge) have a rather large control parameter $ε$ of order 100, making the restricted limit a suitable rough approximation.

Modes of the Sakai-Sugimoto soliton

The instanton in the Sakai-Sugimoto model corresponds to the Skyrmion on the holographic boundary - which is asymptotically flat - and is fundamentally different from the flat Minkowski space Yang-Mills instanton. We use the Atiyah-Patodi-Singer index theorem and a series of transformations to show that there are 6k zeromodes - or moduli - in the limit of infinite 't Hooft coupling of the Sakai-Sugimoto model. The implications for the low-energy baryons - the Skyrmions - on the holographic boundary, is a scale separation between 2k "heavy" massive modes and 6k-9 "light" massive modes for k>1; the 9 global transformations that correspond to translations, rotations and isorotations remain as zeromodes. For k=1 there are 2 "heavy" modes and 6 zeromodes due to degeneracy between rotations and isorotations.

Mass and Isospin Breaking Effects in the Skyrme Model and in Holographic QCD

We discuss how the quark masses and their mass splitting affect the baryons in the Skyrme model as well as the Witten-Sakai-Sugimoto (WSS) model. In both cases baryons are described by solitonic objects, i.e. Skyrmions and instantons, respectively. After the quantization of their zeromodes the nucleons become quantum states of a rotor. We show how the quark mass affects the moment of inertia and we provide a semi-analytic approach valid in the small-mass limit. Additionally, we show how the two lightest quarks' mass splitting affects the moments of inertia of the Skyrmion and induces an isospin breaking effect. This effect turns out not to be enough to split the degeneracy in the neutron-proton multiplet, but it splits some of the states in the Delta multiplet. Unlike the basic Skyrme model, the WSS model already includes vector mesons and another mechanism to transfer isospin breaking from quark masses to the solitons is known. We compute the splitting of the moment of inertia in the small-mass limit in the WSS model and combine the two effects on the spectrum of baryons, in particular the Deltas.

Symmetry energy in holographic QCD

We study the symmetry energy (SE), an important quantity in nuclear physics, in the Witten-Sakai-Sugimoto model and in a much simpler hard-wall model of holographic QCD. The SE is the energy contribution to the nucleus due to having an unequal number of neutrons and protons. Using a homogeneous Ansatz representing smeared instantons and quantizing their isospin, we extract the SE and the proton fraction assuming charge neutrality and beta-equilibrium, using quantization of the isospin zeromode. We also show the equivalence between our method adapted from solitons and the usual way of the isospin controlled by a chemical potential at the holographic boundary. We find that the SE can be well described in the WSS model if we allow for a larger 't Hooft coupling and lower Kaluza-Klein scale than is normally used in phenomenological fits.
