Non-Abelian monopole-vortex complex

In the context of softly broken N=2 supersymmetric quantum chromodynamics (SQCD), with a hierarchical gauge symmetry breaking SU(N+1) -> U(N) -> 1, at scales v1 and v2, respectively, where v1 >> v2, we construct monopole-vortex complex soliton-like solutions and examine their properties. They represent the minimum of the static energy under the constraint that the monopole and antimonopole positions sitting at the extremes of the vortex are kept fixed. They interpolate the 't Hooft-Polyakov-like regular monopole solution near the monopole centers and a vortex solution far from them and in between. The main result, obtained in the theory with Nf=N equal-mass flavors, is concerned with the existence of exact orientational CP(N-1) zero modes, arising from the exact color-flavor diagonal SU(N)_{C+F} global symmetry. The "unbroken" subgroup SU(N) \subset SU(N+1) with which the naïve notion of non-Abelian monopoles and the related difficulties were associated, is explicitly broken at low energies. The monopole transforms nevertheless according to the fundamental representation of a new exact, unbroken SU(N) symmetry group, as does the vortex attached to it. We argue that this explains the origin of the dual non-Abelian gauge symmetry.

Zero-modes of Non-Abelian Solitons in Three Dimensional Gauge Theories

We study non-Abelian solitons of the Bogomol'nyi type in N=2 (d=2+1) supersymmetric Chern-Simons (CS) and Yang-Mills (YM) theory with a generic gauge group. In CS theory, we find topological, non-topological and semi-local (non-)topological vortices of non-Abelian kinds in unbroken, broken and partially broken vacua. We calculate the number of zero-modes using an index theorem and then we apply the moduli matrix formalism to realize the moduli parameters. For the topological solitons we exhaust all the moduli while we study several examples of the non-topological and semi-local solitons. We find that the zero-modes of the topological solitons are governed by the moduli matrix H_0 only and those of the non-topological solitons are governed by both H_0 and the gauge invariant field Ω. We prove local uniqueness of the master equation in the YM case and finally, compare all results between the CS and YM theories.

Group Theory of Non-Abelian Vortices

We investigate the structure of the moduli space of multiple BPS non-Abelian vortices in U(N) gauge theory with N fundamental Higgs fields, focusing our attention on the action of the exact global (color-flavor diagonal) SU(N) symmetry on it. The moduli space of a single non-Abelian vortex, CP(N-1), is spanned by a vector in the fundamental representation of the global SU(N) symmetry. The moduli space of winding-number k vortices is instead spanned by vectors in the direct-product representation: they decompose into the sum of irreducible representations each of which is associated with a Young tableau made of k boxes, in a way somewhat similar to the standard group composition rule of SU(N) multiplets. The Kähler potential is exactly determined in each moduli subspace, corresponding to an irreducible SU(N) orbit of the highest-weight configuration.

Non-Abelian vortex dynamics: Effective world-sheet action

The low-energy vortex effective action is constructed in a wide class of systems in a color-flavor locked vacuum, which generalizes the results found earlier in the context of U(N) models. It describes the weak fluctuations of the non-Abelian orientational moduli on the vortex worldsheet. For instance, for the minimum vortex in SO(2N) x U(1) or USp(2N) x U(1) gauge theories, the effective action found is a two-dimensional sigma model living on the Hermitian symmetric spaces SO(2N)/U(N) or USp(2N)/U(N), respectively. The fluctuating moduli have the structure of that of a quantum particle state in spinor representations of the GNO dual of the color-flavor SO(2N) or USp(2N) symmetry, i.e. of SO(2N) or of SO(2N+1). Applied to the benchmark U(N) model our procedure reproduces the known CP(N-1) worldsheet action; our recipe allows us to obtain also the effective vortex action for some higher-winding vortices in U(N) and SO(2N) theories.

Low-energy U(1) x USp(2M) gauge theory from simple high-energy gauge group

We give an explicit example of the embedding of a near BPS low-energy (U(1) x USp(2M))/Z_2 gauge theory into a high-energy theory with a simple gauge group and adjoint matter content. This system possesses degenerate monopoles arising from the high-energy symmetry breaking as well as non-Abelian vortices due to the symmetry breaking at low energies. These solitons of different codimensions are related by the exact homotopy sequences.

Fractional and semi-local non-Abelian Chern-Simons vortices

In this paper we study fractional as well as semi-local Chern-Simons vortices in G = U(1) x SO(2M) and G = U(1) x USp(2M) theories. The master equations are solved numerically using appropriate Ansatze for the moduli matrix field. In the fractional case the vortices are solved in the transverse plane due to the broken axial symmetry of the configurations (i.e. they are non-rotational invariant). It is shown that unless the fractional vortex-centers are all coincident (i.e. local case) the ring-like flux structure, characteristic of Chern-Simons vortices, will become bell-like fluxes - just as those of the standard Yang-Mills vortices. The asymptotic profile functions are calculated in all cases and the effective size is identified.

Fractional Vortices and Lumps

We study what might be called fractional vortices, vortex configurations with the minimum winding from the viewpoint of their topological stability, but which are characterized by various notable substructures in the transverse energy distribution. The fractional vortices occur in diverse Abelian or non-Abelian generalizations of the Higgs model. The global and local features characterizing these are studied, and we identify the two crucial ingredients for their occurrence - the vacuum degeneracy leading to non-trivial vacuum moduli M, and the BPS nature of the vortices. Fractional vortices are further classified into two kinds. The first type of such vortices appear when M has orbifold Z_n singularities; the second type occurs in systems in which the vacuum moduli space M possesses either a deformed geometry or some singularity. These general features are illustrated with several concrete models.

Non-Abelian Chern-Simons vortices with generic gauge groups

We study non-Abelian Chern-Simon BPS-saturated vortices enjoying N=2 supersymmetry in d=2+1 dimensions, with generic gauge groups of the form U(1) x G', with G' being a simple group, allowing for orientational modes in the solutions. We will keep the group as general as possible and utilizing the powerful moduli matrix formalism to provide the moduli spaces of vortices and derive the corresponding master equations. Furthermore, we study numerically the vortices applying a radial Ansatz to solve the obtained master equations and we find especially a splitting of the magnetic fields, when the coupling constants for the trace-part and the traceless part of the Chern-Simons term are varied, such that the Abelian magnetic field density can become negative near the origin of the vortex while the non-Abelian part stays positive, and vice versa.

Non-Abelian Vortices in SO(N) and USp(N) Gauge Theories

Non-Abelian BPS vortices in SO(N) x U(1) and USp(2N) x U(1) gauge theories are constructed in maximally color-flavor locked vacua. We study in detail their moduli and transformation properties under the exact symmetry of the system. Our results generalize non-trivially those found earlier in supersymmetric U(N) gauge theories. The structure of the moduli spaces turns out in fact to be considerably richer here than what was found in the U(N) theories. We find that vortices are generally of the semi-local type, with power-like tails of profile functions.

SO and USp Kahler and Hyper-Kahler Quotients and Lumps

We study non-linear sigma models whose target spaces are the Higgs phases of supersymmetric SO and USp gauge theories by using the Kahler and hyper-Kahler quotient constructions. We obtain the explicit Kahler potentials and develop an expansion formula to make use of the obtained potentials from which we also calculate the curvatures of the manifolds. The 1/2 BPS lumps in the U(1) x SO and U(1) x USp Kahler quotients and their effective descriptions are also studied. In this connection, a general relation between moduli spaces of vortices and lumps is discussed. We find a new singular limit of the lumps with non-vanishing sizes in addition to the ordinary small lump singularity. The former is due to the existence of singular submanifolds in the target spaces.

On the Stability of Non-Abelian Semi-local Vortices

We study the stability of non-Abelian semi-local vortices based on an N=2 supersymmetric H = [SU(Nc) x U(1)]/Z_Nc = U(Nc) gauge theory with an arbitrary number of flavors (Nf > Nc) in the fundamental representation, when certain N=1 mass terms are present, making the vortex solutions no longer BPS-saturated. Local (ANO-like) vortices are found to be stable against fluctuations in the transverse directions. Strong evidence is found that the ANO-like vortices are actually the true minima. In other words, the semi-local moduli, which are present in the BPS limit, disappear in our non-BPS system, leaving the vortex with the orientational moduli CP(Nc-1) only. We discuss the implications of this fact on the system in which the U(Nc) model arises as the low-energy approximation of an underlying e.g. G = SU(Nc+1) gauge theory.

SO and USp (Hyper)Kahler Quotients and Lumps

The properties of supersymmetric gauge theories in the Higgs phase at low energies can appropriately be studied by means of a non-linear sigma model, which has the target space being Kahler for N=1 supersymmetric models and hyperKahler for N=2 models. By construction of the Kahler and hyperKahler quotients for the gauge theories with SO and USp gauge symmetries, we obtain the explicit metrics on their respective manifolds. Furthermore, we study the lumps in the non-linear sigma models and their effective description, using the Kahler quotients.

A Note on Chern-Simons Solitons - a type III vortex from the wall vortex

We study some properties of topological Chern-Simons vortices in 2 + 1 dimensions. As has already been understood in the past, in the large magnetic flux limit, they are well described by a Chern-Simons domain wall, which has been compactified on a circle with the symmetric phase inside and the asymmetric phase on the outside. Our goal is two-fold. First we want to explore how the tension depends on the magnetic flux discretized by the integer n. The BPS case is already known, but not much has been explored about the non-BPS potentials. A generic renormalizable potential has two dimensionless parameters that can be varied. Variation of only one of them lead to a type I and type II vortex, very similar to the Abrikosov-Nielsen-Olesen (ANO) case. Variation of both the parameters leads to a much richer structure. In particular we have found a new type of vortex, which is type I-like for small flux and then turns type II-like for larger flux. We could tentatively denote it a type III vortex. This results in a stable vortex with number of fluxes which can be greater than one. Our second objective is to study the Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory and and understand how the large n limit of the CS vortex is smoothly connected with the large n limit of the ANO vortex.

Constructing Non-Abelian Vortices with Arbitrary Gauge Groups

We construct the general vortex solution in the fully-Higgsed, color-flavor locked vacuum of a non-Abelian gauge theory, where the gauge group is taken to be the product of an arbitrary simple group and U(1), with a Fayet-Iliopoulos term. The vortex moduli space is determined.

Non-Abelian vortices and monopoles in SO(N) theories

Non-Abelian BPS vortex solutions are constructed in N=2 theories with gauge groups SO(N)\times U(1). The model has N_f flavors of chiral multiplets in the vector representation of SO(N), and we consider a color-flavor locked vacuum in which the gauge symmetry is completely broken, leaving a global SO(N)_{C+F} diagonal symmetry unbroken. Individual vortices break this symmetry, acquiring continuous non-Abelian orientational moduli. By embedding this model in high-energy theories with a hierarchical symmetry breaking pattern such as SO(N+2) --> SO(N)\times U(1) --> 1, the correspondence between non-Abelian monopoles and vortices can be established through homotopy maps and flux matching, generalizing the known results in SU(N) theories. We find some interesting hints about the dual (non-Abelian) transformation properties among the monopoles.

Gauge Coupling Unification via A Novel Technicolor Model

We show that the recently proposed minimal walking technicolor theory together with a small modification of the Standard Model fermionic matter content leads to an excellent degree of unification of the gauge couplings. We compare the degree of unification with various time-honored technicolor models and the minimal supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model. We find that, at the one-loop level, the new theory provides a degree of unification higher than any of the other extensions above. The phenomenology of the present model is very rich with various potential dark matter candidates.

Towards Working Technicolor: Effective Theories and Dark Matter

A fifth force, of technicolor type, responsible for breaking the electroweak theory is an intriguing extension of the Standard Model. Recently new theories have been shown to feature walking dynamics for a very low number of techniflavors and are not ruled out by electroweak precision measurements. We identify the light degrees of freedom and construct the associated low energy effective theories. These can be used to study signatures and relevant processes in current and future experiments. In our theory the technibaryons are pseudo Goldstone bosons and their masses arise via extended technicolor interactions. There are hypercharge assignments for the techniquarks which renders one of the technibaryons electrically neutral. We investigate the cosmological implications of this scenario and provide a component of dark matter.

Dark Matter from new Technicolor Theories

We investigate dark matter candidates emerging in recently proposed technicolor theories. We determine the relic density of the lightest, neutral, stable technibaryon having imposed weak thermal equilibrium conditions and overall electric neutrality of the Universe. In addition we consider sphaleron processes that violate baryon, lepton and technibaryon number. Our analysis is performed in the case of a first order electroweak phase transition as well as a second order one. We argue that, in both cases, the new technibaryon contributes to the dark matter in the Universe. Finally we examine the problem of the constraints on these types of dark matter components from earth based experiments.
