Delocalised traces on Hecke algebras of right-angled, hyperbolic type

For every Hecke C*-algebra of right-angled, hyperbolic type, we construct a smooth subalgebra to which traces associated with arbitrary conjugacy classes in the associated Coxeter group extend. We calculate the pairing with K-theory of the delocalised traces arising this way, showing that it is faithful on K-theory.

Strict comparison for twisted group C*-algebras

We prove that any reduced twisted group C*-algebra of a selfless group with the rapid decay property is selfless. As an application, we show that twisted group C*-algebras of acylindrically hyperbolic groups (possibly with nontrivial finite radical) and rapid decay are pure, and hence have strict comparison.

Free actions of polynomial growth Lie groups and classifiable C*-algebras

We show that any free action of a connected Lie group of polynomial growth on a finite dimensional locally compact space has finite tube dimension. This is shown to imply that the associated crossed product C*-algebra has finite nuclear dimension. As an application we show that C*-algebras associated with certain aperiodic point sets in connected Lie groups of polynomial growth are classifiable. Examples include cut-and-project sets constructed from irreducible lattices in products of connected nilpotent Lie groups.

Detecting ideals in reduced crossed product C*-algebras of topological dynamical systems

We introduce the $\ell^1$-ideal intersection property for crossed product C*-algebras. It is implied by C*-simplicity as well as C*-uniqueness. We show that topological dynamical systems of arbitrary lattices in connected Lie groups, arbitrary linear groups over the integers in a number field and arbitrary virtually polycyclic groups have the $\ell^1$-ideal intersection property. On the way, we extend previous results on C*-uniqueness of $\mathrm{L}^1$-groupoid algebras to the general twisted setting.

On the centre of Iwahori-Hecke algebras

We prove triviality of the centre of arbitrary Hecke algebras of irreducible non-finite non-affine type. This result is obtained as a consequence of the following structure result for conjugacy classes of the underlying Coxeter groups. If $W$ is any infinite irreducible Coxeter group and $w \in W$ is a nontrivial element that is assumed not be a translation in case $W$ is affine, then there is an infinite sequence of conjugates of $w$ by Coxeter generators whose length is non-decreasing and tends to infinity.

A dynamical approach to sampling and interpolation in unimodular groups

We introduce a notion of covolume for point sets in locally compact groups that simultaneously generalizes the covolume of a lattice and the reciprocal of the Beurling density for amenable, unimodular groups. This notion of covolume arises naturally from transverse measure theory applied to the hull dynamical system associated to a point set. Using groupoid techniques, we prove necessary conditions for sampling and interpolation in reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces on unimodular groups in terms of this new notion of covolume. These conditions generalize previously known density theorems for compactly generated groups of polynomial growth, while also covering important new examples, in particular model sets arising from cut-and-project schemes.

Classifying right-angled Hecke C*-algebras via K-theoretic invariants

Exploiting the graph product structure and results concerning amalgamated free products of C*-algebras we provide an explicit computation of the K-theoretic invariants of right-angled Hecke C*-algebras, including concrete algebraic representants of a basis in K-theory. On the way, we show that these Hecke algebras are KK-equivalent with their undeformed counterparts and satisfy the UCT. Our results are applied to study the isomorphism problem for Hecke C*-algebras, highlighting the limits of K-theoretic classification, both for varying Coxeter type as well as for fixed Coxeter type.

The ideal intersection property for essential groupoid C*-algebras

We characterise, in several complementary ways, \'etale groupoids with locally compact Hausdorff space of units whose essential groupoid C*-algebra has the ideal intersection property, assuming that the groupoid is topologically transitive and either Hausdorff or $\sigma$-compact. This leads directly to a characterisation of the simplicity of this C*-algebra which, for Hausdorff groupoids, agrees with the reduced groupoid C*-algebra. Specifically, we prove for topologically transitive groupoids that the ideal intersection property is equivalent to the absence of essentially confined amenable sections of isotropy groups. For topologically transitive groupoids with compact space of units we moreover show that this is equivalent to the uniqueness of equivariant pseudo-expectations. A key technical idea underlying our results is a new notion of groupoid action on C*-algebras including the essential groupoid C*-algebra itself. For minimal groupoids, we further obtain a relative version of Powers averaging property. Examples arise from suitable group representations into simple groupoid \Cstar-algebras. This is illustrated by the example of the quasi-regular representation of Thompson's group $\mathrm{T}$ with respect to Thompson's group $\mathrm{F}$, which satisfies the relative Powers averaging property in the Cuntz algebra $\mathcal{O}_2$.

Amenability, proximality and higher order syndeticity

We show that the universal minimimal proximal flow and the universal minimal strongly proximal flow of a discrete group can be realized as the Stone spaces of translation invariant Boolean algebras of subsets of the group satisfying a higher order notion of syndeticity. We establish algebraic, combinatorial and topological dynamical characterizations of these subsets that we use to obtain new necessary and sufficient conditions for strong amenability and amenability. We also characterize dense orbit sets, answering a question of Glasner, Tsankov, Weiss and Zucker.

Measure equivalence for non-unimodular groups

We undertake a comprehensive study of measure equivalence between general locally compact, second countable groups, providing operator algebraic and ergodic theoretic reformulations, and complete the classification of amenable groups within this class up to measure equivalence.

An algebraic characterization of ample type I groupoids

We give algebraic characterizations of the type I and CCR properties for locally compact second countable, ample Hausdorff groupoids in terms of subquotients of their Boolean inverse semigroups of compact open bisections. It yields in turn algebraic characterizations of both properties for inverse semigroups in terms of subquotients of their booleanizations.

Factorial multiparameter Hecke von Neumann algebras and representations of groups acting on right-angled buildings

We obtain a complete characterisation of factorial multiparameter Hecke von Neumann algebras associated with right-angled Coxeter groups. Considering their $\ell^p$-convolution algebra analogues, we exhibit an interesting parameter dependence, contrasting phenomena observed earlier for group Banach algebras. Translated to Iwahori-Hecke von Neumann algebras, these results allow us to draw conclusions on spherical representation theory of groups acting on right-angled buildings, which are in strong contrast to behaviour of spherical representations in the affine case. We also investigate certain graph product representations of right-angled Coxeter groups and note that our von Neumann algebraic structure results show that these are finite factor representations. Further classifying a suitable family of them up to unitary equivalence allows us to reveal high-dimensional Euclidean subspaces of the space of extremal characters of right-angled Coxeter groups.

Measure equivalence and coarse equivalence for unimodular locally compact groups

This article is concerned with measure equivalence and uniform measure equivalence of locally compact, second countable groups. We show that two unimodular, locally compact, second countable groups are measure equivalent if and only if they admit free, ergodic, probability measure preserving actions whose cross section equivalence relations are stably orbit equivalent. Using this we prove that in the presence of amenability any two such groups are measure equivalent and that both amenability and property (T) are preserved under measure equivalence, extending results of Connes-Feldman-Weiss and Furman. Furthermore, we introduce a notion of uniform measure equivalence for unimodular, locally compact, second countable groups, and prove that under the additional assumption of amenability this notion coincides with coarse equivalence, generalizing results of Shalom and Sauer. Throughout the article we rigorously treat measure theoretic issues arising in the setting of non-discrete groups.

C*-superrigidity of 2-step nilpotent groups

We show that torsion-free finitely generated nilpotent groups are characterised by their group C*-algebras and we additionally recover their nilpotency class as well as the subquotients of the upper central series. We then use a C*-bundle decomposition and apply K-theoretic methods based on noncommutative tori to prove that every torsion-free finitely generated 2-step nilpotent group can be recovered from its group C*-algebra.

Cartan subalgebras in dimension drop algebras

We completely classify Cartan subalgebras of dimension drop algebras with coprime parameters. More generally, we classify Cartan subalgebras of arbitrary stabilised dimension drop algebras that are non-degenerate in the sense that the dimensions of their fibres in the endpoints are maximal. Conjugacy classes by an automorphism are parametrised by certain congruence classes of matrices over the natural numbers with prescribed row and column sums. In particular, each dimension drop algebra admits only finitely many non-degenerate Cartan subalgebras up to conjugacy. As a consequence of this parametrisation, we can provide examples of subhomogeneous C*-algebras with exactly n Cartan subalgebras up to conjugacy. Moreover, we show that in many dimension drop algebras, Cartan subalgebras are conjugate if and only if their spectrum is homeomorphic.

Traces on reduced group C*-algebras

In this short note we prove that the reduced group C*-algebra of a locally compact group admits a non-zero trace if and only if the amenable radical of the group is open. This completely answers a question raised by Forrest, Spronk and Wiersma.
