Tunable broadband polarization retarders

We theoretically propose a type of tunable polarization retarder, which is composed of sequences of half-wave and quarter-wave polarization retarders, allowing operation at broad spectral bandwidth. The constituent retarders are composed of stacked standard half-wave retarders and quarter-wave retarders rotated at designated angles relative to their fast-polarization axes. The proposed composite retarder can be tuned to an arbitrary value of the retardance by varying the middle retarder alone, while maintaining its broadband spectral bandwidth intact.

High-fidelity quantum control by polychromatic pulse trains

We introduce a quantum control technique using polychromatic pulse sequences (PPS), consisting of pulses with different carrier frequencies, i.e. different detunings with respect to the qubit transition frequency. We derive numerous PPS, which generate broadband, narrowband, and passband excitation profiles for different target transition probabilities. This makes it possible to create high-fidelity excitation profiles which are either (i) robust to deviations in the experimental parameters, which is attractive for quantum computing, or (ii) more sensitive to such variations, which is attractive for cross talk elimination and quantum sensing. The method is demonstrated experimentally using one of IBM's superconducting quantum processors, in a very good agreement between theory and experiment. These results demonstrate both the excellent coherence properties of the IBM qubits and the accuracy, robustness and flexibility of the proposed quantum control technique. They also show that the detuning is as efficient control parameter as the pulse phase that is commonly used in composite pulses. Hence the method opens a variety of perspectives for quantum control in areas where phase manipulation is difficult or inaccurate.

Narrowband and passband composite pulses for variable rotations

We develop a systematic approach to derive narrowband (NB) and passband (PB) composite sequences which can produce any pre-selected transition probability with any desired accuracy. The NB composite pulses are derived by successive cancellation of derivative terms in the propagator. The PB pulses are built by combining two half-$π$ NB pulses. Both the NB and PB pulses feature vanishing wings on both sides of the central region around the target transition probability, and the PB pulses offer also a flat (broadband) top around the target probability. The NB sequences are particularly suitable for sensing and metrology applications, while the PB sequences can be very useful for qubit control in the case of tightly spaced qubits for they ensure both selectivity (suppressed cross talk to neighbors) and robustness (suppressed laser pointing instability). Other possible applications include selective (NB), or both selective and robust (PB), control of close transitions in frequency space.

Simplified implementation of the quantum Fourier transform with Ising-type Hamiltonians: Example with ion traps

We propose a simplified mathematical construction of the quantum Fourier transform which is suited for systems described by Ising-type Hamiltonians. By contrast to the standard Cooley-Tuckey scheme, which prescribes sequences of CPHASE gates, our implementation is based on one-qubit gates and a free evolution process. We also show how to obtain a quadratic speed-up by applying the conditional interactions simultaneously. Thus rather than O($N^2$) our implementation time scales as O($N$). Finally, we show a realization of our method with homogeneous microwave driven ion traps in a magnetic field with gradient.

Composite two-qubit gates

We design composite controlled-phase gates, which compensate errors in the phase of a single gate. The errors can be of various nature, such as relative, absolute or both. We present composite sequences which are robust to relative errors up to the 6th order, with the number of the constituent gates growing just linearly with the desired accuracy, and we describe a method to achieve even higher accuracy. We show that the absolute error can be canceled entirely with only two gates. We describe an ion-trap implementation of our composite gates, in which simultaneous cancellation of the error in both the pulse area and the detuning is achieved.

Efficient construction of three- and four-qubit quantum gates by global entangling gates

We present improved circuits for the control-control-phase (Toffoli) gate and the control-swap (Fredkin) gate using three and four global two-qubit gates, respectively. This is a nearly double speed-up compared to the conventional circuits, which require five (for Toffoli) and seven (for Fredkin) conditional two-qubit gates. We apply the same approach to construct the conditional four-qubit phase gate by seven global two-qubit gates. We also present construction of the Toffoli and the Fredkin gates with five nearest-neighbour interactions. Our constructions do not employ ancilla qubits or ancilla internal states and are particularly well suited for ion qubits and for circuit QED systems, where the entangling operations can be implemented by global addressing.

Highly efficient broadband polarization retarders and tunable polarization filters made of composite stacks of ordinary wave plates

By using the formal analogy between the evolution of the state vector in quantum mechanics and the Jones vector in polarization optics, we construct and demonstrate experimentally efficient broadband half-wave polarization retarders and tunable narrowband polarization filters. Both the broadband retarders and the filters are constructed by the same set of stacked standard multi-order optical wave plates rotated at different angles with respect to their fast polarization axes: for a certain set of angles this device behaves as a broadband polarization retarder while for another set of angles it turns into a narrowband polarization filter. We demonstrate that the transmission profile of our filter can be centered around any desired wavelength in a certain vicinity of the design wavelength of the wave plates solely by selecting appropriate rotation angles.

Creation of arbitrary Dicke and NOON states of trapped-ion qubits by global addressing with composite pulses

We propose a fast and efficient technique to create classes of highly entangled states of trapped ions, such as arbitrary Dicke states and superpositions of them, e.g. NOON states. The ions are initialized in the phonon ground state and are addressed globally with a composite pulse that is resonant with the first motional sideband. The technique operates on comparatively short time scales, as resonant interactions allow one to use the minimum laser pulse area. The number of single pulses from the composite sequence is equal to the number of ions, thus the implementation complexity grows only linearly with the size of the system. The approach does not require individual addressing of the ions in the trap and can be applied both inside and outside the Lamb-Dicke regime.

Variable Ultra-broadband and Narrowband Composite Polarization Retarders

We propose and experimentally demonstrate novel types of composite sequences of half-wave and quarter-wave polarization retarders, either permitting operation at ultra-broad spectral bandwidth or narrow bandwidth. The retarders are composed of stacked standard half-wave retarders and quarter-wave retarders of equal thickness. To our knowledge, these home-built devices outperform all commercially available compound retarders, made of several birefringent materials.

Simulation of Jahn-Teller-Dicke Magnetic Structural Phase Transition with Trapped Ions

We study theoretically the collective E$\otimes$e Jahn-Teller-Dicke distortion in a system of trapped ions. We focus in the limit of infinite range interactions in which an ensemble of effective spins interacts with two collective vibrational modes with U(1) symmetric couplings. Our model is exactly solvable in the thermodynamical limit and it is amenable to be solved by exact numerical diagonalization for a moderate number of ions. We show that trapped ions are ideally suited to study the emergence of spontaneous symmetry breaking of a continuous symmetry and magnetic structural phase transition in a mesoscopic system.

Scalable uniform construction of highly-conditional quantum gates

We present a scalable uniform technique for construction of highly conditional C$^n$-NOT quantum gates of trapped ion qubits, such as the Toffoli gate, without using ancilla states and circuits of an exorbitant number of concatenated one- and two-qubit gates. Apart from the initial dressing of the internal qubit states with vibrational phonons and the final restoration of the phonon ground state, our technique requires the application of just a single composite pulse on the target qubit and is applicable both in and outside the Lamb-Dicke regime. We design special narrowband composite pulses, which suppress all transitions but the conditional transition of the target qubit; moreover, these composite pulses significantly improve the spatial addressing selectivity.

Simple implementation of a quantum search with trapped ions

We propose an ion trap implementation of Grover's quantum search algorithm for an unstructured database of arbitrary length N. The experimental implementation is appealingly simple because the linear ion trap allows for a straightforward construction, in a single interaction step and without a multitude of Hadamard transforms, of the reflection operator, which is the engine of the Grover algorithm. Consequently, a dramatic reduction in the number of the required physical steps takes place, to just O(\sqrt{N}), the same as the number of the mathematical steps. The proposed setup allows for demonstration of both the original (probabilistic) Grover search and its deterministic variation, and is remarkably robust to imperfections in the register initialization.
