Forwarding techniques for the global stabilization of dissipative infinite-dimensional systems coupled with an ODE

This paper deals with the stabilization of a coupled system composed by an infinite-dimensional system and an ODE. Moreover, the control, which appears in the dynamics of the ODE, is subject to a general class of nonlinearities. Such a situation may arise, for instance, when the actuator admits a dynamics. The open-loop ODE is exponentially stable and the open-loop infinite-dimensional system is dissipative, i.e., the energy is nonincreasing, but its equilibrium point is not necessarily attractive. The feedback design is based on an extension of a finite-dimensional method, namely the forwarding method. We propose some sufficient conditions that imply the well-posedness and the global asymptotic stability of the closed-loop system. As illustration, we apply these results to a transport equation coupled with an ODE.

Minimizing rational functions: a hierarchy of approximations via pushforward measures

This paper is concerned with minimizing a sum of rational functions over a compact set of high-dimension. Our approach relies on the second Lasserre's hierarchy (also known as the upper bounds hierarchy) formulated on the pushforward measure in order to work in a space of smaller dimension. We show that in the general case the minimum can be approximated as closely as desired from above with a hierarchy of semidefinite programs problems or, in the particular case of a single fraction, with a hierarchy of generalized eigenvalue problems. We numerically illustrate the potential of using the pushforward measure rather than the standard upper bounds hierarchy. In our opinion, this potential should be a strong incentive to investigate a related challenging problem interesting in its own; namely integrating an arbitrary power of a given polynomial on a simple set (e.g., unit box or unit sphere) with respect to Lebesgue or Haar measure.

Forwarding design for stabilization of a coupled transport equation-ODE with a cone-bounded input nonlinearity

We propose a new design technique for the stabilization of coupled ODE-PDE systems in feedforward form. In particular, we address the stabilization problem of a one-dimensional transport equation driven by a scalar ODE which is controlled via a cone-bounded nonlinearity. The unforced transport equation is conservative but not asymptotically stable. The proposed technique is inspired by the forwarding approach early introduced in the 90's. Well-posedness and asymptotic stability of the closed-loop system are discussed.

A Fredholm transformation for the rapid stabilization of a degenerate parabolic equation

This paper deals with the rapid stabilization of a degenerate parabolic equation with a right Dirich-let control. Our strategy consists in applying a backstepping strategy, which seeks to find an invertible transformation mapping the degenerate parabolic equation to stabilize into an exponentially stable system whose decay rate is known and as large as we desire. The transformation under consideration in this paper is Fredholm. It involves a kernel solving itself another PDE, at least formally. The main goal of the paper is to prove that the Fredholm transformation is well-defined, continuous and invertible in the natural energy space. It allows us to deduce the rapid stabilization.

L^p-asymptotic stability analysis of a 1D wave equation with a nonlinear damping

This paper is concerned with the asymptotic stability analysis of a one dimensional wave equation with Dirichlet boundary conditions subject to a nonlinear distributed damping with an L p functional framework, p $\in$ [2, $\infty$]. Some well-posedness results are provided together with exponential decay to zero of trajectories, with an estimation of the decay rate. The well-posedness results are proved by considering an appropriate functional of the energy in the desired functional spaces introduced by Haraux in [11]. Asymptotic behavior analysis is based on an attractivity result on a trajectory of an infinite-dimensional linear time-varying system with a special structure, which relies on the introduction of a suitable Lyapunov functional. Note that some of the results of this paper apply for a large class of nonmonotone dampings.

Stability analysis of a 1D wave equation with a nonmonotone distributed damping

This paper is concerned with the asymptotic stability analysis of a one dimensional wave equation subject to a nonmonotone distributed damping. A well-posedness result is provided together with a precise characterization of the asymptotic behavior of the trajectories of the system under consideration. The well-posedness is proved in the nonstandard L p functional spaces, with p $\in$ [2, $\infty$], and relies mostly on some results collected in Haraux (2009). The asymptotic behavior analysis is based on an attractivity result on a specific infinite-dimensional linear time-variant system.

Event-triggered damping stabilization of a linear wave equation

The paper addresses the design of an event-triggering mechanism for a partial differential wave equation posed in a bounded domain. The wave equation is supposed to be controlled through a first order time derivative term distributed in the whole domain. Sufficient conditions based on the use of suitable Lyapunov functional are proposed to guarantee that an event-triggered distributed control still ensures the exponential stability of the closed-loop system. Moreover, the designed event-triggering mechanism allows to avoid the Zeno behavior. The 'existence and regularity' prerequisite properties of solutions for the closed loop system are also proven.

Stability analysis of dissipative systems subject to nonlinear damping via Lyapunov techniques

In this article, we provide a general strategy based on Lyapunov functionals to analyse global asymptotic stability of linear infinite-dimensional systems subject to nonlinear dampings under the assumption that the origin of the system is globally asymp-totically stable with a linear damping. To do so, we first characterize, in terms of Lyapunov functionals, several types of asymptotic stability for linear infinite-dimensional systems, namely the exponential and the polynomial stability. Then, we derive a Lyapunov functional for the nonlinear system, which is the sum of a Lyapunov functional coming from the linear system and another term with compensates the nonlinearity. Our results are then applied to the linearized Korteweg-de Vries equation and some wave equations.

A moment approach for entropy solutions to nonlinear hyperbolic PDEs

We propose to solve polynomial hyperbolic partial differential equations (PDEs) with convex optimization. This approach is based on a very weak notion of solution of the nonlinear equation, namely the measure-valued (mv) solution, satisfying a linear equation in the space of Borel measures. The aim of this paper is, first, to provide the conditions that ensure the equivalence between the two formulations and, second, to introduce a method which approximates the infinite-dimensional linear problem by a hierarchy of convex, finite-dimensional, semidefinite programming problems. This result is then illustrated on the celebrated Burgers equation. We also compare our results with an existing numerical scheme, namely the Godunov scheme.

On ISS-Lyapunov functions for infinite-dimensional linear control systems subject to saturations

- This article deals with the derivation of ISS-Lyapunov functions for infinite-dimensional linear systems subject to saturations. Two cases are considered: 1) the saturation acts in the same space as the control space; 2) the saturation acts in another space, especially a Banach space. For the first case, an explicit ISS-Lyapunov function can be derived. For the second case, we can only ensure the existence of an ISS-Lyapunov function.

Global stabilization of a Korteweg-de Vries equation with saturating distributed control

This article deals with the design of saturated controls in the context of partial differential equations. It focuses on a Korteweg-de Vries equation, which is a nonlinear mathematical model of waves on shallow water surfaces. Two different types of saturated controls are considered. The well-posedness is proven applying a Banach fixed point theorem, using some estimates of this equation and some properties of the saturation function. The proof of the asymptotic stability of the closed-loop system is separated in two cases: i) when the control acts on all the domain, a Lyapunov function together with a sector condition describing the saturating input is used to conclude on the stability, ii) when the control is localized, we argue by contradiction. Some numerical simulations illustrate the stability of the closed-loop nonlinear partial differential equation. 1. Introduction. In recent decades, a great effort has been made to take into account input saturations in control designs (see e.g [39], [15] or more recently [17]). In most applications, actuators are limited due to some physical constraints and the control input has to be bounded. Neglecting the amplitude actuator limitation can be source of undesirable and catastrophic behaviors for the closed-loop system. The standard method to analyze the stability with such nonlinear controls follows a two steps design. First the design is carried out without taking into account the saturation. In a second step, a nonlinear analysis of the closed-loop system is made when adding the saturation. In this way, we often get local stabilization results. Tackling this particular nonlinearity in the case of finite dimensional systems is already a difficult problem. However, nowadays, numerous techniques are available (see e.g. [39, 41, 37]) and such systems can be analyzed with an appropriate Lyapunov function and a sector condition of the saturation map, as introduced in [39]. In the literature, there are few papers studying this topic in the infinite dimensional case. Among them, we can cite [18], [29], where a wave equation equipped with a saturated distributed actuator is studied, and [12], where a coupled PDE/ODE system modeling a switched power converter with a transmission line is considered. Due to some restrictions on the system, a saturated feedback has to be designed in the latter paper. There exist also some papers using the nonlinear semigroup theory and focusing on abstract systems ([20],[34],[36]). Let us note that in [36], [34] and [20], the study of a priori bounded controller is tackled using abstract nonlinear theory. To be more specific, for bounded ([36],[34]) and unbounded ([34]) control operators, some conditions are derived to deduce, from the asymptotic stability of an infinite-dimensional linear system in abstract form, the asymptotic stability when closing the loop with saturating controller. These articles use the nonlinear semigroup theory (see e.g. [24] or [1]). The Korteweg-de Vries equation (KdV for short)

This article deals with the design of saturated controls in the context of partial differential equations. It is focused on a Korteweg-de Vries equation, which is a nonlinear mathematical model of waves on shallow water surfaces. The aim of this article is to study the influence of a saturating in L 2-norm distributed control on the well-posedness and the stability of this equation. This article deals with the design of saturated controls in the context of partial differential equations. It is focused on a linear Korteweg-de Vries equation, which is a mathematical model of waves on shallow water surfaces. In this article, we close the loop with a saturating input that renders the equation nonlinear. The well-posedness is proven thanks to the nonlinear semigroup theory. The proof of the asymptotic stability of the closed-loop system uses a Lyapunov function.
