Resonance excitations in $^7$Be(d,p)$^8$Be$^\ast$ to address the cosmological lithium problem

The anomaly in lithium abundance is a well-known unresolved problem in nuclear astrophysics. A recent revisit to the problem tried the avenue of resonance enhancement to account for the primordial $^7$Li abundance in standard big-bang nucleosynthesis (BBN). Prior measurements of the $^7$Be(d,p)$^8$Be* reaction could not account for the individual contributions of the different excited states involved, particularly at higher energies close to the Q-value of the reaction. We carried out an experiment at HIE-ISOLDE, CERN to study this reaction at E$_{cm}$ = 7.8 MeV, populating excitations up to 22 MeV in $^8$Be for the first time. The angular distributions of the several excited states have been measured and the contributions of the higher excited states in the total cross section at the relevant big-bang energies were obtained by extrapolation to the Gamow window using the TALYS code. The results show that by including the contribution of the 16.63 MeV state, the maximum value of the total S-factor inside the Gamow window comes out to be 167 MeV b as compared to earlier estimate of 100 MeV b. However, this still does not account for the lithium discrepancy.

Supersymmetric quantum mechanics to study the 16.8 MeV resonance state of $^{9}$B

The study of a high-lying resonant state of $^{9}$B is carried out using supersymmetric quantum mechanics (SQM). The resulting isospectral potentials are very deep and narrow and the generated wave functions identify the resonance at 16.84 MeV with a width of 69 keV. The present work shows that SQM can be successfully applied for detection of high-lying resonances in unstable nuclei.

Resonance State Wave Functions of $^{15}$Be using Supersymmetric Quantum Mechanics

The theoretical procedure of supersymmetric quantum mechanics is adopted to generate the resonance state wave functions of the unbound nucleus $^{15}$Be. In this framework, we used a density dependent M3Y microscopic potential and arrived at the energy and width of the 1.8 MeV (5/2$^+$) resonance state. We did not find any other nearby resonances for $^{15}$Be. It becomes apparent that the present framework is a powerful tool to theoretically complement the increasingly important accelerator based experiments with unbound nuclei.

Computationally efficient method for retrieval of atmospherically distorted astronomical images

Speckle Imaging based on triple correlation is a very efficient image reconstruction technique which is used to retrieve Fourier phase information of the object in presence of atmospheric turbulence. We have developed both Direct Bispectrum and Radon transform based Tomographic speckle masking algorithms to retrieve atmospherically distorted astronomical images. The latter is a much computationally efficient technique because it works with one dimensional image projections. Tomographic speckle imaging provides good image recovery like direct bispectrum but with a large improvement in computational time and memory requirements. The algorithms were compared with speckle simulations of aperture masking interferometry with 17 sub-apertures using different objects. The results of the computationally efficient tomographic technique with laboratory and real astronomical speckle images are also discussed.

Speckle Imaging with Hypertelescopes

Optical stellar interferometers have demonstrated milli-arcsecond resolution with few apertures spaced hundreds of meters apart. To obtain rich direct images, many apertures will be needed, for a better sampling of the incoming wavefront. The coherent imaging thus achievable improves the sensitivity with respect to the incoherent combination of successive fringed exposures. Efficient use of highly diluted apertures for coherent imaging can be done with pupil densification, a technique also called 'hypertelescope imaging'. Although best done with adaptive phasing, concentrating most energy in a dominant interference peak for a rich direct image of a complex source, such imaging is also possible with random phase errors such as caused by turbulent 'seeing', using methods such as speckle imaging which uses several short exposure images to reconstruct the true image. We have simulated such observations using an aperture which changes through the night, as naturally happens on Earth with fixed grounded mirror elements, and find that reconstructed images of star clusters and extended objects are of high quality. As part of the study we also estimated the required photon levels for achieving a good signal to noise ratio using such a technique.

Study of resonance states of $^{11}$Be with isospectral bound state microscopic potential

The theoretical procedure of supersymmetric quantum mechanics (SQM) is adopted for the first time to study quasi-bound states of a weakly bound nuclear system using microscopic potential. The density dependent M3Y (DDM3Y) effective interaction was found earlier to give a satisfactory description of radioactivity, nuclear matter and scattering. In the present work, we have generated a two-body potential microscopically in a single folding model using the DDM3Y effective interaction. From this potential, SQM generated a family of isospectral potentials for $^{11}$Be ($^{10}$Be + n). We investigated the 5/2$^+$, 3/2$^-$ and 3/2$^+$ resonance states of $^{11}$Be. The experimental data and the present calculations of excitation energies of the above resonance states are found to be in good agreement.

Calibration of a solid state nuclear track detector (SSNTD) with high detection threshold to search for rare events in cosmic rays

We have investigated a commercially available polymer for its suitability as a solid state nuclear track detector (SSNTD). We identified that polymer to be polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and found that it has a higher detection threshold compared to many other widely used SSNTDs which makes this detector particularly suitable for rare event search in cosmic rays as it eliminates the dominant low Z background. Systematic studies were carried out to determine its charge response which is essential before any new material can be used as an SSNTD. In this paper we describe the charge response of PET to 129Xe, 78Kr and 49Ti ions from the REX-ISOLDE facility at CERN, present the calibration curve for PET and characterize it as a nuclear track detector.

Multi-pronged events from Coulomb fission of nuclei at very low energies

Multi-pronged tracks have been recorded in the polyethylene terephthalate (C$_{10}$H$_8$O$_4$)$_n$ solid state nuclear track detector by exposure to a $^{252}$Cf fission source. After chemical etching, two-prong to six-pronged tracks along with single tracks have been observed under the optical microscope. We carried out a systematic study to understand the origin of the prongs. The track detectors were coated with metals (Cu, Ag and Pb) and were exposed to $^{252}$Cf source. After chemical etching two-prong to four pronged tracks were observed in each plate. We believe that at this very low energy of the order of 1 MeV/A, Coulomb fission is the only plausible explanation for the origin of such multi-pronged tracks.

Analyzing Powers and Spin Correlation Coefficients for p+d Elastic Scattering at 135 and 200 MeV

The proton and deuteron analyzing powers and 10 of the possible 12 spin correlation coefficients have been measured for p+d elastic scattering at proton bombarding energies of 135 and 200 MeV. The results are compared with Faddeev calculations using two different NN potentials. The qualitative features of the extensive data set on the spin dependence in p+d elastic scattering over a wide range of angles presented here are remarkably well explained by two-nucleon force predictions without inclusion of a three-nucleon force. The remaining discrepancies are, in general, not alleviated when theoretical three-nucleon forces are included in the calculations.

High resolution imaging by employing passive and active approaches

This article begins with the discussions on the formation of speckles in the case of non-coherent quasi monochromatic source and of ways to detect them. Prior to this, a brief introduction on the behavior of the atmosphere and its effect on the plane wavefront from a stellar source is presented. The benefit of short-exposure images over long exposure is highlighted with emphasis set on their comparison as well. The data processing methods that are implemented in our institute in order to decipher both Fourier modulus and Fourier phase are described. The salient features of the adaptive optics system that compensates the atmospheric effects on the image in real time are discussed. The article concludes after a brief discussion on certain astrophysical problems that can be targeted using moderate sized telescopes available in India, such as 2.34 meter Vainu Bappu Telescope (VBT), Kavalur, 2 meter Himalayan Chandra Telescope (HCT), Hanley.

Spin correlations in $\vec{p}\vec{p}\to pnπ^{+}$ pion production near threshold

A first measurement of longitudinal as well as transverse spin correlation coefficients for the reaction $\vec{p}\vec{p}\to pnπ^+$ was made using a polarized proton target and a polarized proton beam. We report kinematically complete measurements for this reaction at 325, 350, 375 and 400 MeV beam energy. The spin correlation coefficients $A_{xx}+A_{yy}, A_{xx}-A_{yy}, A_{zz}, A_{xz},$ and the analyzing power $A_{y},$ as well as angular distributions for $σ(θ_π)$ and the polarization observables $A_{ij}(θ_π)$ were extracted. Partial wave cross sections for dominant transition channels were obtained from a partial wave analysis that included the transitions with final state angular momenta of $l\leq 1$. The measurements of the ${\vec{p}\vec{p}\to pnπ^{+}}$ polarization observables are compared with the predictions from the Jülich meson exchange model. The agreement is very good at 325 MeV, but it deteriorates increasingly for the higher energies. At all energies agreement with the model is better than for the reaction ${\vec{p}\vec{p}\to ppπ^{0}}$.

Measurement of Spin Correlation coefficients in \vec p \vec p --> d pi^+

The spin correlation coefficent combinations A_{xx}+A_{yy} and A_{xx}-A_{yy}, the spin correlation coefficients A_{xz} and A_{zz}, and the analyzing power were measured for \vec p \vec p --> d pi^+ between center-of-mass angles 25 deg \leq θ\leq 65 deg at beam energies of 350.5, 375.0 and 400.0 MeV. The experiment was carried out with a polarized internal target and a stored, polarized beam. Non-vertical beam polarization needed for the measurement of A_{zz} was obtained by the use of solenoidal spin rotators. Near threshold, only a few partial waves contribute, and pion s- and p-waves dominate with a possible small admixture of d-waves. Certain combinations of the observables reported here are a direct measure of these d-waves. The d-wave contributions are found to be negligible even at 400.0 MeV.

Initial singlet and triplet spin state contributions to pp -> pp pi0

The PINTEX facility at the IUCF Cooler ring, dedicated to the study of spin dependence in nucleon-nucleon interactions, has been used to measure polarization observables of the reaction pp -> pp pi0 at beam energies between 325 and 400 MeV. The stored polarized proton beam had spin projections both in the longitudinal and the transverse directions with respect to the beam momentum. We report here on the measurements of the relative transverse and longitudinal spin-dependent cross sections, deltasigma_T/sigma_tot and deltasigma_L/sigma_tot, and how from these observables the initial spin singlet and triplet cross sections are obtained. Considering angular momentum states less or equal to one, the contribution of the Ps partial waves to the cross section can be extracted.

Measurement of Partial-Wave Contributions in pp --> pp pi^0

We report a measurement of the spin-dependent total cross section ratios delta_sigma_T/sigma_tot and delta_sigma_L/sigma_tot of the pp --> pp pi^0 reaction between 325 MeV and 400 MeV. The experiment was carried out with a polarized internal target in a storage ring. Non-vertical beam polarization was obtained by the use of solenoidal spin rotators. Near threshold, the knowledge of both spin-dependent total cross sections is sufficient to deduce the strength of certain participating partial waves, free of any model.

Spin Correlation Coefficients in pp-->pnpi+ from 325 to 400 MeV

The spin correlation coefficient combinations Axx + Ayy, Axx - Ayy and the analyzing powers Ay(theta) were measured for pp-->pnpi+ at beam energies of 325, 350, 375 and 400 MeV. A polarized internal atomic hydrogen target and a stored, polarized proton beam were used. These polarization observables are sensitive to contributions of higher partial waves. A comparison with recent theoretical calculations is provided.

Polarization Observables of pp -> pp pi0 Near Threshold

With the aim to study spin dependence of pion production near threshold, an internal target facility and a forward detector have been installed in the Cooler synchrotron ring at IUCF. The detector system comprises scintillators and wire chambers. The target consists of a thin-walled open-ended storage cell into which polarized atomic hydrogen is injected. Using a stored and cooled, polarized proton beam, polarization observables of the reaction pp -> pp pi0 have been studied at energies between 21 and 55 MeV above the pion production threshold in the center of mass system. We report here measurements of the spin correlation parameters Axx and Ayy, and the analyzing power Ay, integrated over the pion polar angle.

Dependence of pp->pp pi0 near Threshold on the Spin of the Colliding Nucleons

A polarized internal atomic hydrogen target and a stored, polarized beam are used to measure the spin-dependent total cross section Delta_sigma_T/sigma_tot, as well as the polar integrals of the spin correlation coefficient combination A_xx-A_yy, and the analyzing power A_y for pp-> pp pi0 at four bombarding energies between 325 and 400 MeV. This experiment is made possible by the use of a cooled beam in a storage ring. The polarization observables are used to study the contribution from individual partial waves.
