Coherent libration to coherent rotational dynamics via chimeralike states and clustering in Josephson Junction array

An array of excitable Josephson junctions under global mean-field interaction and a common periodic forcing shows emergence of two important classes of coherent dynamics, librational and rotational motion in the weaker and stronger coupling limits, respectively, with transitions to chimeralike states and clustered states in the intermediate coupling range. In this numerical study, we use the Kuramoto complex order parameter and introduce two measures, a libration index and a clustering index to characterize the dynamical regimes and their transition and locate them in a parameter plane.

Electronic Circuit Analog of Synthetic Genetic Networks: Revisited

Electronic circuits are useful tools for studying potential dynamical behaviors of synthetic genetic networks. The circuit models are complementary to numerical simulations of the networks, especially providing a framework for verification of dynamical behaviors in the presence of intrinsic and extrinsic noise of the electrical systems. Here we present an improved version of our previous design of an electronic analog of genetic networks that includes the 3-gene Repressilator and we show conversions between model parameters and real circuit component values to mimic the numerical results in experiments. Important features of the circuit design include the incorporation of chemical kinetics representing Hill function inhibition, quorum sensing coupling, and additive noise. Especially, we make a circuit design for a systematic change of initial conditions in experiment, which is critically important for studies of dynamical systems' behavior, particularly, when it shows multistability. This improved electronic analog of the synthetic genetic network allows us to extend our investigations from an isolated Repressilator to coupled Repressilators and to reveal the dynamical behavior's complexity.

Chimeralike states in a network of oscillators under attractive and repulsive global coupling

We observe chimeralike states in an ensemble of oscillators using a type of global coupling consisting of two components: attractive and repulsive mean-field feedback. We identify existence of two types of chimeralike states in a bistable Liénard system; in one type, both the coherent and the incoherent populations are in chaotic states (called as chaos-chaos chimeralike states) and, in another type, the incoherent population is in periodic state while the coherent population has irregular small oscillation. Interestingly, we also recorded a metastable state in a parameter regime of the Liénard system where the coherent and noncoherent states migrates from one to another population. To test the generality of the coupling configuration, we present another example of bistable system, the van der Pol-Duffing system where the chimeralike states are observed, however, the coherent population is periodic or quasiperiodic and the incoherent population is of chaotic in nature. Furthermore, we apply the coupling to a network of chaotic Rössler system where we find the chaos-chaos chimeralike states.

Extreme multistability: Attractor manipulation and robustness

The coexistence of infinitely many attractors is called extreme multistability in dynamical systems. In coupled systems, this phenomenon is closely related to partial synchrony and characterized by the emergence of a conserved quantity. We propose a general design of coupling that leads to partial synchronization, which may be a partial complete synchronization or partial antisynchronization and even a mixed state of complete synchronization and antisynchronization in two coupled systems and, thereby reveal the emergence of extreme multistability. The proposed design of coupling has wider options and allows amplification or attenuation of the amplitude of the attractors whenever it is necessary. We demonstrate that this phenomenon is robust to parameter mismatch of the coupled oscillators.

Bursting dynamics in a population of oscillatory and excitable Josephson junction

We report parabolic bursting in a globally coupled network of mixed population of oscillatory and excitable Josephson junctions. The resistive-capacitive shunted junction (RCSJ) model of the superconducitng device is used for this study. We focus on the parameter regime of the junction where its dynamics is governed by the saddle-node on invariant circle (SNIC) bifurcation. In this SNIC regime, the bursting appears in a broad paramater space of the ensemble of mixed junctions. For a coupling value above a threshold, the network splits into two synchronized clusters when a reductionism approach is applied to reproduce the bursting behavior of the large network. The excitable junctions effectively induces a slow dynamics in the network to generate bursting. This bursting is a generic property of a globally coupled network with a mixed population of dynamical nodes where each node posseses the SNIC property.

Transition from amplitude to oscillation death in a network of oscillators

We report a transition from a homogeneous steady state (HSS) to inhomogeneous steady states (IHSSs) in a network of globally coupled identical oscillators. We perturb a synchronized population in the network with a few local negative mean field links. It is observed that the whole population splits into two clusters for a certain number of negative mean field links and specific range of coupling strength. For further increases of the strength of interaction these clusters collapse to a HSS followed by a transition to IHSSs. We analytically determine the origin of HSS and its transition to IHSS in relation to the number of negative mean-field links and the strength of interaction using a reductionism approach to the model network in a two-cluster state. We verify the results with numerical examples of networks using the paradigmatic Landau-Stuart limit cycle system and the chaotic Rossler oscillator as dynamical nodes. During the transition from HSS to IHSSs, the network follows the Turing type symmetry breaking pitchfork or transcritical bifurcation depending upon the system dynamics.

Experimental observation of extreme multistability in an electronic system of two coupled Rössler oscillators

We report the first experimental observation of extreme multistability in a controlled laboratory investigation. Extreme multistability arises when infinitely many attractors coexist for the same set of system parameters. The behavior was predicted earlier on theoretical grounds, supported by numerical studies of models of two coupled identical or nearly identical systems. We construct and couple two analog circuits based on a modified coupled Rössler system and demonstrate the occurrence of extreme multistability through a controlled switching to different attractor states purely through a change in initial conditions for a fixed set of system parameters. Numerical studies of the coupled model equations are in agreement with our experimental findings.

Diverse routes of transition from amplitude to oscillation death in coupled oscillators under additional repulsive link

We report the existence of diverse routes of transition from amplitude death (AD) to oscillation death (OD) in three different diffusively coupled systems, those are perturbed by a symmetry break- ing repulsive coupling link. For limit cycle systems the transition is through a pitchfork bifurcation (PB) as has been noted before, but in chaotic systems it can be through a saddle-node or a trans- critical bifurcation depending on the nature of the underlying dynamics of the individual systems. The diversity of the routes and their dependence on the complex dynamics of the coupled systems not only broadens our understanding of this important phenomenon but can lead to potentially new practical applications.

Mixed-lag synchronization in coupled counter-rotating oscillators

We report mixed lag synchronization in coupled counter-rotating oscillators. The trajectories of counter-rotating oscillators has opposite directions of rotation in uncoupled state. Under diffusive coupling via a scalar variable, a mixed lag synchronization emerges when a parameter mismatch is induced in two counter-rotating oscillators. In the state of mixed lag synchronization, one pair of state variables achieve synchronization shifted in time while another pair of state variables are in antisynchronization, however, they are too shifted by the same time. Numerical example of the paradigmatic R{ö}ssler oscillator is presented and supported by electronic experiment.

Oscillation death in diffusively coupled oscillators by local repulsive link

A death of oscillation is reported in a network of coupled synchronized oscillators in presence of additional repulsive coupling. The repulsive link evolves as an averaging effect of mutual interaction between two neighboring oscillators due to a local fault and the number of repulsive links grows in time when the death scenario emerges. Analytical condition for oscillation death is derived for two coupled Landau-Stuart systems. Numerical results also confirm oscillation death in chaotic systems such as a Sprott system and the Rössler oscillator. We explore the effect in large networks of globally coupled oscillators and find that the number of repulsive links is always fewer than the size of the network.

Noise-aided Logic in an Electronic Analog of Synthetic Genetic Networks

We report the experimental verification of noise-enhanced logic behaviour in an electronic analog of a synthetic genetic network, composed of two repressors and two constitutive promoters. We observe good agreement between circuit measurements and numerical prediction, with the circuit allowing for robust logic operations in an optimal window of noise. Namely, the input-output characteristics of a logic gate is reproduced faithfully under moderate noise, which is a manifestation of the phenomenon known as Logical Stochastic Resonance. The two dynamical variables in the system yield complementary logic behaviour simultaneously. The system is easily morphed from AND/NAND to OR/NOR logic.

How to induce multiple delays in coupled chaotic oscillators?

Lag synchronization is a basic phenomenon in mismatched coupled systems, delay coupled systems and time-delayed systems. It is characterized by a lag configuration that establishes a unique time shift between all the state variables of the coupled systems. In this report, an attempt is made how to induce multiple lag configurations in coupled systems when different pairs of state variables attain different time shift. A design of coupling is presented to realize this multiple lag synchronization. Numerical illustration is given using examples of the Rössler system and the slow-fast Hindmarsh-Rose neuron model. The multiple lag scenario is physically realized in an electronic circuit of two Sprott systems.

Enhancing Synchrony in Chaotic Oscillators by Dynamic Relaying

In a chain of mutually coupled oscillators, the coupling threshold for synchronization between the outermost identical oscillators decreases when a type of impurity (in terms of parameter mismatch) is introduced in the inner oscillator(s). The outer oscillators interact indirectly via dynamic relaying, mediated by the inner oscillator(s). We confirm this enhancing of critical coupling in the chaotic regimes of Rössler system in absence of coupling delay and in Mackey-Glass system with delay coupling. The enhancing effect is experimentally verified in electronic circuit of Rössler oscillators.

Lag synchronization and scaling of chaotic attractor in coupled system

We report a design of delay coupling for lag synchronization in two unidirectionally coupled chaotic oscillators. A delay term is introduced in the definition of the coupling to target any desired lag between the driver and the response. The stability of the lag synchronization is ensured by using the Hurwitz matrix stability. We are able to scale up or down the size of a driver attractor at a response system in presence of a lag. This allows compensating the attenuation of the amplitude of a signal during transmission through a delay line. The delay coupling is illustrated with numerical examples of 3D systems, the Hindmarsh-Rose neuron model, the Rössler system and a Sprott system and, a 4D system. We implemented the coupling in electronic circuit to realize any desired lag synchronization in chaotic oscillators and scaling of attractors.

Synchronization in counter-rotating oscillators

An oscillatory system can have clockwise and anticlockwise senses of rotation. We propose a general rule how to obtain counter-rotating oscillators from the definition of a dynamical system and then investigate synchronization. A type of mixed synchronization emerges in counter-rotating oscillators under diffusive scalar coupling when complete synchronization and antisynchronization coexist in different state variables. Stability conditions of mixed synchronization are obtained analytically in Rossler oscillator and Lorenz system. Experimental evidences of mixed synchronization are given for limit cycle as well as chaotic oscillators in electronic circuits.

Design strategies for the creation of aperiodic nonchaotic attractors

Parametric modulation in nonlinear dynamical systems can give rise to attractors on which the dynamics is aperiodic and nonchaotic, namely with largest Lyapunov exponent being nonpositive. We describe a procedure for creating such attractors by using random modulation or pseudo-random binary sequences with arbitrarily long recurrence times. As a consequence the attractors are geometrically fractal and the motion is aperiodic on experimentally accessible timescales. A practical realization of such attractors is demonstrated in an experiment using electronic circuits.
