On Continuum Effective Field Theories, Gravity and Holography

We examine effective field theories (EFTs) with a continuum sector in the presence of gravity. We first explain, via arguments based on central charge and species scale, that an EFT with a free continuum cannot consistently couple to standard (i.e. 4D Einstein) gravity. It follows that EFTs with a free or nearly-free continuum must either have a finite number of degrees of freedom or nonstandard gravity. The latter claim is realized for holographically-defined continuum models. We demonstrate this by computing the deviations from standard gravity in a specific 5D scalar-gravity system that gives rise to a gapped continuum (i.e the linear dilaton background). We find an $R^{-2}$ deviation from the Newtonian potential. At finite temperature we find an energy density with matter-like behavior in the brane Friedmann equation, holographically induced from the bulk geometry. Thus, remarkably, a brane-world living in the linear dilaton background automatically contains dark matter. We also present a slightly more evolved asymptotically-AdS linear dilaton model, for which the deviations exhibit a transition between AdS and linear dilaton behaviors.

On Holography in General Background and the Boundary Effective Action from AdS to dS

We study quantum fields on an arbitrary, rigid background with boundary. We derive the action for a scalar in the holographic basis that separates the boundary and bulk degrees of freedom. A relation between Dirichlet and Neumann propagators valid for any background is obtained from this holographic action. As a simple application, we derive an exact formula for the flux of bulk modes emitted from the boundary in a warped background. We also derive a formula for the Casimir pressure on a $(d-1)$-brane depending only on the boundary-to-bulk propagators, and apply it in AdS. Turning on couplings and using the holographic basis, we evaluate the one-loop boundary effective action in AdS by means of the heat kernel expansion. We extract anomalous dimensions of single and double trace CFT operators generated by loops of heavy scalars and nonabelian vectors, up to third order in the large squared mass expansion. From the boundary heat kernel coefficients we identify CFT operator mixing and corrections to OPE data, in addition to the radiative generation of local operators. We integrate out nonabelian vector fluctuations in AdS$_{4,5,6}$ and obtain the associated holographic Yang-Mills $β$ functions. Turning to the expanding patch of dS, following recent proposals, we provide a boundary effective action generating the perturbative cosmological correlators using analytical continuation from dS to EAdS. We obtain the "cosmological" heat kernel coefficients in the scalar case and work out the divergent part of the dS$_4$ effective action which renormalizes the cosmological correlators. We find that bulk masses and wavefunction can logarithmically run as a result of the dS$_4$ curvature, and that operators on the late time boundary are radiatively generated. More developments are needed to extract all one-loop information from the cosmological effective action.

Searching for anomalous top quark interactions with proton tagging and timing detectors at the LHC

We study the LHC sensitivity to new broad neutral resonances produced in two-photon fusion and decaying to a top quark pair, $γγ\to t\bar{t}$. This is probed in central exclusive $t\bar{t}$ production in proton-proton collisions, $pp \to p t\bar{t} p$. We use the tagging of the intact protons by PPS (CMS) and AFP (ATLAS) and consider the semi-leptonic $t\bar t$ channel. The sensitivity is also mapped onto a set of dimension-8 $γγt\bar{t}$ operators in the large mass limit. Using the kinematical correlations between the intact protons and the reconstructed $t\bar{t}$ system, we obtain a sensitivity to the couplings of the dimension-8 operators of $1.4 \cdot 10^{-11}~\mathrm{GeV}^{-4}$ at 95% CL. The sensitivity to the anomalous couplings is significantly improved down to about $7\cdot 10^{-12}~\mathrm{GeV}^{-4}$ if the proton time-of-flight is known with a precision of 20 ps in future measurements. The 95% CL sensitivity to broad neutral resonances reaches masses of order $ 1500~\mathrm{GeV} $ when using timing information.

White Paper on Forward Physics, BFKL, Saturation Physics and Diffraction

The goal of this whitepaper is to give a comprehensive overview of the rich field of forward physics. We discuss the occurrences of BFKL resummation effects in special final states, such as Mueller-Navelet jets, jet gap jets, and heavy quarkonium production. It further addresses TMD factorization at low x and the manifestation of a semi-hard saturation scale in (generalized) TMD PDFs. More theoretical aspects of low x physics, probes of the quark gluon plasma, as well as the possibility to use photon-hadron collisions at the LHC to constrain hadronic structure at low x, and the resulting complementarity between LHC and the EIC are also presented. We also briefly discuss diffraction at colliders as well as the possibility to explore further the electroweak theory in central exclusive events using the LHC as a photon-photon collider.

Effective Field Theory in AdS: Continuum Regime, Soft Bombs, and IR Emergence

We consider a scalar field in a slice of Lorentzian five-dimensional AdS at arbitrary energies. We show that the presence of bulk interactions separate the behavior of the theory into two different regimes: Kaluza--Klein and continuum. We determine the transition scale between these regimes and show that UV brane correlation functions are independent of IR brane-localized operators for four-momenta beyond this transition scale. The same bulk interactions that induce the transition also give rise to cascade decays. We study these cascade decays for the case of a cubic self-interaction in the continuum regime. We find that the cascade decay progresses slowly towards the IR region and gives rise to soft spherical final states, in accordance with former results from both gravity and CFT. We identify a recursion relation between integrated squared amplitudes of different leg numbers and thus evaluate the total rate. We find that cascade decays in the continuum regime are exponentially suppressed. This feature completes the picture of the IR brane as an emergent sector as seen from the UV brane. We briefly discuss consistency with the holographic dual description of glueballs and some implications for dark sector models.

Continuum-Mediated Self-Interacting Dark Matter

Dark matter may self-interact through a continuum of low-mass states. This happens if dark matter couples to a strongly-coupled nearly-conformal hidden sector. This type of theory is holographically described by brane-localized dark matter interacting with bulk fields in a slice of 5D anti-de Sitter space. The long-range potential in this scenario depends on a non-integer power of the spatial separation, in contrast to the Yukawa potential generated by the exchange of a single 4D mediator. The resulting self-interaction cross section scales like a non-integer power of velocity. We identify the Born, classical and resonant regimes and investigate them using state-of-the-art numerical methods. We demonstrate the viability of our continuum-mediated framework to address the astrophysical small-scale structure anomalies. Investigating the continuum-mediated Sommerfeld enhancement, we demonstrate that a pattern of resonances can occur depending on the non-integer power. We conclude that continuum mediators introduce novel power-law scalings which open new possibilities for dark matter self-interaction phenomenology.

Opacity from Loops in AdS

We investigate how quantum dynamics affects the propagation of a scalar field in Lorentzian AdS. We work in momentum space, in which the propagator admits two spectral representations (denoted "conformal" and "momentum") in addition to a closed-form one, and all have a simple split structure. Focusing on scalar bubbles, we compute the imaginary part of the self-energy $ {\rm Im} Π$ in the three representations, which involves the evaluation of seemingly very different objects. We explicitly prove their equivalence in any dimension, and derive some elementary and asymptotic properties of $ {\rm Im} Π$. Using a WKB-like approach in the timelike region, we evaluate the propagator dressed with the imaginary part of the self-energy. We find that the dressing from loops exponentially dampens the propagator when one of the endpoints is in the IR region, rendering this region opaque to propagation. This suppression may have implications for field-theoretical model-building in AdS. We argue that in the effective theory (EFT) paradigm, opacity of the IR region induced by higher dimensional operators censors the region of EFT breakdown. This confirms earlier expectations from the literature. Specializing to AdS$_5$, we determine a universal contribution to opacity from gravity.

The Neutrino Casimir Force

In the low energy effective theory of the weak interaction, a macroscopic force arises when pairs of neutrinos are exchanged. We calculate the neutrino Casimir force between plates, allowing for two different mass eigenstates within the loop. We also provide the general potential between point sources. We discuss the possibility of distinguishing whether neutrinos are Majorana or Dirac fermions using these quantum forces.

We report on the status of efforts to improve the reinterpretation of searches and measurements at the LHC in terms of models for new physics, in the context of the LHC Reinterpretation Forum. We detail current experimental offerings in direct searches for new particles, measurements, technical implementations and Open Data, and provide a set of recommendations for further improving the presentation of LHC results in order to better enable reinterpretation in the future. We also provide a brief description of existing software reinterpretation frameworks and recent global analyses of new physics that make use of the current data.

Braneworld Effective Field Theories--Holography, Consistency and Conformal Effects

Braneworld theories are often described as low-energy effective field theories (EFTs) featuring an infinitely thin 3-brane and 4D fields exactly localized on it. We investigate whether an exactly localized braneworld can arise as a limit of a theory of 5D fields. Using a holographic formalism we argue that such limit does not exist in the presence of gravity, therefore implying a discontinuity in the space of EFTs. We then present specific models involving exactly localized fields in which inconsistencies appear, which are solved when fields are taken as quasilocalized. Part of our arguments rely on conjectures from the "swampland" program. Our investigation motivates braneworld EFTs built from 5D fields, i.e. quasilocalized braneworlds. Observable effects from quasilocalization are significant for warped braneworlds such as Randall-Sundrum II (RSII), and are reminiscent of a conformal hidden sector. Focusing on the gauge-gravity sector we show that manifestations of the quasilocalized warped braneworld include i) an anomalous running of SM gauge couplings ii) a conformal contribution to SM gauge boson scattering induced by 5D gravity. Constraining these effects puts an upper bound on the 5D EFT cutoff, implying that the warped braneworld hypothesis could---at least in principle---be tested completely.

Exotic Spin-Dependent Forces from a Hidden Sector

New dynamics from hidden sectors may manifest as long-range forces between visible matter particles. The well-known case of Yukawa-like potentials occurs via the exchange of a single virtual particle. However, more exotic behavior is also possible. We present three classes of exotic potentials that are generated by relativistic theories: (i) quantum forces from the loop-level exchange of two virtual particles, (ii) conformal forces from a conformal sector, and (iii) emergent forces from degrees of freedom that only exist in the infrared regime of the theory. We discuss the complementarity of spin-dependent force searches in an effective field theory framework. We identify well-motivated directions to search for exotic spin-dependent forces.

Approximate Symmetries and Gravity

There are strong reasons to believe that global symmetries of quantum theories cannot be exact in the presence of gravity. While this has been argued at the qualitative level, establishing a quantitative statement is more challenging. In this work we take new steps towards quantifying symmetry violation in EFTs with gravity. First, we evaluate global charge violation by microscopic black holes present in a thermal system, which represents an irreducible, universal effect at finite temperature. Second, based on general QFT considerations, we propose that local symmetry-violating processes should be faster than black hole-induced processes at any sub-Planckian temperature. Such a proposal can be seen as part of the "swampland" program to constrain EFTs emerging from quantum gravity. Considering an EFT perspective, we formulate a conjecture which requires the existence of operators violating global symmetry and places quantitative bounds on them. We study the interplay of our conjecture with emergent symmetries in QFT. In models where gauged U(1)'s enforce accidental symmetries, we find that constraints from the Weak Gravity Conjecture can ensure that our conjecture is satisfied. We also study the consistency of the conjecture with QFT models of emergent symmetries such as extradimensional localization, the Froggatt-Nielsen mechanism, and the clockwork mechanism.

Opacity and Effective Field Theory in Anti-de Sitter Backgrounds

We consider quantum field theory in a five-dimensional anti-de Sitter background, possibly truncated by 4d branes. In the Euclidian version of this space, it is known that propagators exponentially decay when they go far enough towards the Poincaré horizon, i.e. deep enough into the IR region of the AdS bulk. In this note we show that an analogous property exists in Lorentzian AdS. The exponential suppression is found to occur in the presence of bulk interactions dressing the AdS propagators. We calculate one-loop gravitational dressing and find that the suppression effect comes from the scalar component of the 5d graviton. We then argue that, at least at strong coupling, this exponential decay censors the region of spacetime where the 5d effective field theory would become invalid. As an application we estimate the rate for the cascade decay of bulk fields---which are known to produce soft spherical events with high multiplicity---and find this rate to be exponentially suppressed.

The Warped Dark Sector

Five-dimensional braneworld constructions in anti-de Sitter space naturally lead to dark sector scenarios in which parts of the dark sector vanish at high 4d momentum or temperature. In the language of modified gravity, such feature implies a new mechanism for hiding light scalars, as well as the possibility of UV-completing chameleon-like effective theories. In the language of dark matter phenomenology, the high-energy behaviour of the mediator sector changes dark matter observational complementarity. A multitude of signatures---including exotic ones---are present from laboratory to cosmologic scales, including long-range forces with non-integer behaviour, periodic signals at colliders, `soft bombs' events well-known from conformal theories, as well as a dark phase transition and a typically small amount of dark radiation.

Quantum Chameleons

We initiate a quantum treatment of chameleon-like particles, deriving classical and quantum forces directly from the path integral. It is found that the quantum force can potentially dominate the classical one by many orders of magnitude. We calculate the quantum chameleon pressure between infinite plates, which is found to interpolate between the Casimir and the integrated Casimir-Polder pressures, respectively in the limits of full screening and no screening. To this end we calculate the chameleon propagator in the presence of an arbitrary number of one-dimensional layers of material. For the Eöt-Wash experiment, the five-layer propagator is used to take into account the intermediate shielding sheet, and it is found that the presence of the sheet enhances the quantum pressure by two orders of magnitude. As an example of implication, we show that in both the standard chameleon and symmetron models, large and previously unconstrained regions of the parameter space are excluded once the quantum pressure is taken into account.

The Simplified Likelihood Framework

We discuss the simplified likelihood framework as a systematic approximation scheme for experimental likelihoods such as those originating from LHC experiments. We develop the simplified likelihood from the Central Limit Theorem keeping the next-to-leading term in the large $N$ expansion to correctly account for asymmetries. Moreover, we present an efficient method to compute the parameters of the simplified likelihood from Monte Carlo simulations. The approach is validated using a realistic LHC-like analysis, and the limits of the approximation are explored. Finally, we discuss how the simplified likelihood data can be conveniently released in the HepData error source format and automatically built from it, making this framework a convenient tool to transmit realistic experimental likelihoods to the community.

Quantum Forces from Dark Matter and Where to Find Them

We observe that sub-GeV Dark Matter (DM) induces Casimir-Polder forces between nucleons, that can be accessed by experiments from nuclear to molecular scales. We calculate the nucleon-nucleon potentials arising in the DM effective theory and note that their main features are fixed by dimensional analysis and the optical theorem. Molecular spectroscopy and neutron scattering turn out be DM search experiments, and are found to be complementary to nucleon-based DM direct detection. Existing data set limits on DM with mass up to $\sim 3-50$ MeV and with effective interaction up to the $O(10-100)$ MeV scale, constraining a region typically difficult to reach for other experiments.
