Graded Lie superalgebras from embedding tensors

We show how various constructions of $\mathbb{Z}$-graded Lie superalgebras are related to each other. These Lie superalgebras have a Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ as the subalgebra at degree 0, an odd $\mathfrak{g}$-module V as the subspace at degree 1, and an embedding tensor as an element at degree -1. This is a linear map from V to $\mathfrak{g}$ satisfying a quadratic constraint, which equips V with the structure of a Leibniz algebra.

Supersymmetric Poisson and Poisson-supersymmetric sigma models

We revisit and construct new examples of supersymmetric 2D topological sigma models whose target space is a Poisson supermanifold. Inspired by the AKSZ construction of topological field theories, we follow a graded-geometric approach and identify two commuting homological vector fields compatible with the graded symplectic structure, which control the gauge symmetries and the supersymmetries of the sigma models. Exemplifying the general structure, we show that two distinguished cases exist, one being the differential Poisson sigma model constructed before by Arias, Boulanger, Sundell and Torres-Gomez and the other a contravariant differential Poisson sigma model. The new model features nonlinear supersymmetry transformations that are generated by the Poisson structure on the body of the target supermanifold, giving rise to a Poisson supersymmetry. Further examples are characterised by supersymmetry transformations controlled by the anchor map of a Lie algebroid, when this map is invertible, in which case we determine the geometric conditions for invariance under supersymmetry and closure of the supersymmetry algebra. Moreover, we show that the common thread through this type of models is that their supersymmetry-generating vector field is the coadjoint representation up to homotopy of a Lie algebroid.

The modular class of a singular foliation

The modular class of a regular foliation is a cohomological obstruction to the existence of a volume form transverse to the leaves which is invariant under the flow of the vector fields of the foliation. By drawing on the relationship between Lie algebroids and regular foliations, this paper extends the notion of modular class to the realm of singular foliations. The singularities are dealt with by replacing the singular foliations by any of their universal Lie $\infty$-algebroids, and by picking up the modular class of the latter. The geometric meaning of the modular class of a singular foliation $\mathcal{F}$ is not as transparent as for regular foliations: it is an obstruction to the existence of a universal Lie $\infty$-algebroid of $\mathcal{F}$ whose Berezinian line bundle is a trivial $\mathcal{F}$-module. This paper illustrates the relevance of using universal Lie $\infty$-algebroids to extend mathematical notions from regular foliations to singular ones, thus paving the road to defining other characteristic classes in this way.

Atiyah classes of Lie algebroid homotopy modules

For a Lie algebroid pair $A\hookrightarrow L$ we study cocycles constructed from the extension to $L$ of the higher connection forms of a representation up to homotopy $E$ of the Lie algebroid $A$. We show that there exists a cohomology class with values in the endomorphism bundle of $E$ that is independent of the extension above and vanishes whenever a homotopy $A$-compatible extension exists. Whenever the representation up to homotopy $E$ is the resolution of a Lie algebroid representation $K$ of $A$, it is shown that there exists a quasi-isomorphism sending the new Atiyah class to the classical one, associated to extensions to $L$ of the Lie algebroid representation $K$.

From Lie algebra crossed modules to tensor hierarchies

The present paper, though inspired by the use of tensor hierarchies in theoretical physics, establishes their mathematical credentials, especially as genetically related to Lie algebra crossed modules. Gauging procedures in supergravity rely on a pairing - the embedding tensor - between a Leibniz algebra and a Lie algebra. Two such algebras, together with their embedding tensor, form a triple called a Lie-Leibniz triple, of which Lie algebra crossed modules are particular cases. This paper is devoted to showing that any Lie-Leibniz triple induces a differential graded Lie algebra - its associated tensor hierarchy - whose restriction to the category of Lie algebra crossed modules is the canonical assignment associating to any Lie algebra crossed module its corresponding unique 2-term differential graded Lie algebra. This shows that Lie-Leibniz triples form natural generalizations of Lie algebra crossed modules and that their associated tensor hierarchies can be considered as some kind of 'lie-ization' of the former. We deem the present construction of such tensor hierarchies clearer and more straightforward than previous derivations. We stress that such a construction suggests the existence of further well-defined Leibniz gauge theories.

Tensor hierarchies and Leibniz algebras

Tensor hierarchies are algebraic objects that emerge in gauging procedures in supergravity models, and that present a very deep and intricate relationship with Leibniz (or Loday) algebras. In this paper, we show that one can canonically associate a tensor hierarchy to any Loday algebra. By formalizing the construction that is performed in supergravity, we build this tensor hierarchy explicitly. We show that this tensor hierarchy can be canonically equipped with a differential graded Lie algebra structure that coincides with the one that is found in supergravity theories.

Infinity-enhancing of Leibniz algebras

We establish a correspondence between infinity-enhanced Leibniz algebras, recently introduced in order to encode tensor hierarchies, and differential graded Lie algebras, which have been already used in this context. We explain how any Leibniz algebra gives rise to a differential graded Lie algebra with a corresponding infinity-enhanced Leibniz algebra. Moreover, by a theorem of Getzler, this differential graded Lie algebra canonically induces an $L_\infty$-algebra structure on the suspension of the underlying chain complex. We explicitly give the brackets to all orders and show that they agree with the partial results obtained from the infinity-enhanced Leibniz algebras in arXiv:1904.11036.

The universal Lie $\infty$-algebroid of a singular foliation

We associate a Lie $\infty$-algebroid to every resolution of a singular foliation, where we consider a singular foliation as a locally generated $\mathscr{O}$-submodule of vector fields on the underlying manifold closed under Lie bracket. Here $\mathscr{O}$ can be the ring of smooth, holomorphic, or real analytic functions. The choices entering the construction of this Lie $\infty$-algebroid, including the chosen underlying resolution, are unique up to homotopy and, moreover, every other Lie $\infty$-algebroid inducing the same foliation or any of its sub-foliations factorizes through it in an up-to-homotopy unique manner. We thus call it the universal Lie $\infty$-algebroid of the singular foliation. For real analytic or holomorphic singular foliations, it can be chosen, locally, to be a Lie $n$-algebroid for some finite $n$. We show that this universal structure encodes several aspects of the geometry of the leaves of a singular foliation. In particular, it contains the holonomy algebroid and groupoid of a leaf in the sense of Androulidakis and Skandalis. But even more, each leaf carries an isotropy $L_\infty$-algebra structure that is unique up to isomorphism. It extends a minimal isotropy Lie algebra, that can be associated to each leaf, by higher brackets, which give rise to additional invariants of the foliation. As a byproduct, we construct an example of a foliation generated by $r$ vector fields for which we show by these techniques that it cannot be generated by the image through the anchor map of a Lie algebroid of the minimal rank $r$.

A short guide through integration theorems of generalized distributions

The generalization of Frobenius' theorem to foliations with singularities is usually attributed to Stefan and Sussmann, for their simultaneous discovery around 1973. However, their result is often referred to without caring much on the precise statement, as some sort of magic spell. This may be explained by the fact that the literature is not consensual on a unique formulation of the theorem, and because the history of the research leading to this result has been flawed by many claims that turned to be refuted some years later. This, together with the difficulty of doing proof-reading on this topic, brought much confusion about the precise statement of Stefan-Sussmann's theorem. This paper is dedicated to bring some light on this subject, by investigating the different statements and arguments that were put forward in geometric control theory between 1962 and 1994 regarding the problem of integrability of generalized distributions. We will present the genealogy of the main ideas and show that many mathematicians that were involved in this field made some mistakes that were successfully refuted. Moreover, we want to address the prominent influence of Hermann on this topic, as well as the fact that some statements of Stefan and Sussmann turned to be wrong. In this paper, we intend to provide the reader with a deeper understanding of the problem of integrability of generalized distributions, and to reduce the confusion surrounding these difficult questions.

Lie $\infty$-algebroids and singular foliations

A singular (or Hermann) foliation on a smooth manifold $M$ can be seen as a subsheaf of the sheaf $\mathfrak{X}$ of vector fields on $M$. We show that if this singular foliation admits a resolution (in the sense of sheaves) consisting of sections of a graded vector bundle of finite type, then one can lift the Lie bracket of vector fields to a Lie $\infty$-algebroid structure on this resolution, that we call a universal Lie $\infty$-algebroid associated to the foliation. The name is justified because it is isomorphic (up to homotopy) to any other Lie $\infty$-algebroid structure built on any other resolution of the given singular foliation.

Hidden Q-structure and Lie 3-algebra for non-abelian superconformal models in six dimensions

We disclose the mathematical structure underlying the gauge field sector of the recently constructed non-abelian superconformal models in six spacetime dimensions. This is a coupled system of 1-form, 2-form, and 3-form gauge fields. We show that the algebraic consistency constraints governing this system permit to define a Lie 3-algebra, generalizing the structural Lie algebra of a standard Yang-Mills theory to the setting of a higher bundle. Reformulating the Lie 3-algebra in terms of a nilpotent degree 1 BRST-type operator Q, this higher bundle can be compactly described by means of a Q-bundle; its fiber is the shifted tangent of the Q-manifold corresponding to the Lie 3-algebra and its base the odd tangent bundle of spacetime equipped with the de Rham differential. The generalized Bianchi identities can then be retrieved concisely from Q^2=0, which encode all the essence of the structural identities. Gauge transformations are identified as vertical inner automorphisms of such a bundle, their algebra being determined from a Q-derived bracket.
