Proceedings of the 16th International Workshop on Non-Classical Models of Automata and Applications

The Sixteenth International Workshop on Non-Classical Models of Automata and Applications (NCMA 2026) was held in Rouen, France, on June 29 and 30, 2026, organized by the University of Rouen. The NCMA workshop series was established in 2009 as an annual event for researchers working on non-classical and classical models of automata, grammars or related devices. Such models are investigated both as theoretical models and as formal models for applications from different points of view.

Morphisms and minimisation of weighted automata

This paper studies the algorithms for the minimisation of weighted automata. It starts with the definition of morphisms-which generalises and unifies the notion of bisimulation to the whole class of weighted automata-and the unicity of a minimal quotient for every automaton, obtained by partition refinement. From a general scheme for the refinement of partitions, two strategies are considered for the computation of the minimal quotient: the Domain Split and the Predecesor Class Split algorithms. They correspond respectivly to the classical Moore and Hopcroft algorithms for the computation of the minimal quotient of deterministic Boolean automata. We show that these two strategies yield algorithms with the same quadratic complexity and we study the cases when the second one can be improved in order to achieve a complexity similar to the one of Hopcroft algorithm.

Derived terms without derivation a shifted perspective on the derived-term automaton

We present here a construction for the derived term automaton (aka partial derivative, or Antimirov, automaton) of a rational (or regular) expression based on a sole induction on the depth of the expression and without making reference to an operation of derivation of the expression. It is particularly well-suited to the case of weighted rational expressions.

Unambiguous separators for tropical tree automata

In this paper we show that given a max-plus automaton (over trees, and with real weights) computing a function $f$ and a min-plus automaton (similar) computing a function $g$ such that $f\leqslant g$, there exists effectively an unambiguous tropical automaton computing $h$ such that $f\leqslant h\leqslant g$. This generalizes a result of Lombardy and Mairesse of 2006 stating that series which are both max-plus and min-plus rational are unambiguous. This generalization goes in two directions: trees are considered instead of words, and separation is established instead of characterization (separation implies characterization). The techniques in the two proofs are very different.

On Determinism and Unambiguity of Weighted Two-way Automata

In this paper, we first study the conversion of weighted two-way automata to one-way automata. We show that this conversion preserves the unambiguity but does not preserve the determinism. Yet, we prove that the conversion of an unambiguous weighted one-way automaton into a two-way automaton leads to a deterministic two-way automaton. As a consequence, we prove that unambiguous weighted two-way automata are equivalent to deterministic weighted two-way automata in commutative semirings.

On the Finiteness Problem for Automaton (Semi)groups

This paper addresses a decision problem highlighted by Grigorchuk, Nekrashevich, and Sushchanskii, namely the finiteness problem for automaton (semi)groups. For semigroups, we give an effective sufficient but not necessary condition for finiteness and, for groups, an effective necessary but not sufficient condition. The efficiency of the new criteria is demonstrated by testing all Mealy automata with small stateset and alphabet. Finally, for groups, we provide a necessary and sufficient condition that does not directly lead to a decision procedure.

Series which are both max-plus and min-plus rational are unambiguous

Consider partial maps from the free monoid into the field of real numbers with a rational domain. We show that two families of such series are actually the same: the unambiguous rational series on the one hand, and the max-plus and min-plus rational series on the other hand. The decidability of equality was known to hold in both families with different proofs, so the above unifies the picture. We give an effective procedure to build an unambiguous automaton from a max-plus automaton and a min-plus one that recognize the same series.
