Finiteness Theorems for Gromov-Hyperbolic Spaces and Groups

In this article we prove that the set of torsion-free groups acting by isometries on a hyperbolic metric space whose entropy is bounded above and with a compact quotient is finite. The number of such groups can be estimated in terms of the hyperbolicity constant and of an upper bound of the entropy of the space and of an upper bound of the diameter of its quotient. As a consequence we show that the set of non cyclic torsion-free $δ$-hyperbolic marked groups whose entropy is bounded above by a number $H$ is finite with cardinality depending on $δ$ and $H$ alone. From these results, we draw homotopical and topological finiteness theorems for compact metric spaces and manifolds.

On Scalar and Ricci Curvatures

The purpose of this report is to acknowledge the influence of M. Gromov's vision of geometry on our own works. It is two-fold: in the first part we aim at describing some results, in dimension 3, around the question: which open 3-manifolds carry a complete Riemannian metric of positive or non negative scalar curvature? In the second part we look for weak forms of the notion of "lower bounds of the Ricci curvature" on non necessarily smooth metric measure spaces. We describe recent results some of which are already posted in [arXiv:1712.08386] where we proposed to use the volume entropy. We also attempt to give a new synthetic version of Ricci curvature bounded below using Bishop-Gromov's inequality.

Curvature-Free Margulis Lemma for Gromov-Hyperbolic Spaces

We prove curvature-free versions of the celebrated Margulis Lemma. We are interested by both the algebraic aspects and the geometric ones, with however an emphasis on the second and we aim at giving quantitative (computable) estimates of some important invariants. Our goal is to get rid of the pointwise curvature assumptions in order to extend the results to more general spaces such as certain metric spaces. Essentially the upper bound on the curvature is replaced by the assumption that the space is hyperbolic in the sense of Gromov and the lower bound of the curvature by an upper bound on the entropy which we recall the definition.

Maximizing torsional rigidity on Riemannian manifolds

Let $\,(M,g)\,$ be a $n$-dimensional Riemannian manifold and $\,Ω\,$ be any compact connected domain in $\,M$. We study the problem of finding the {\em maxima} of the functional $\, {\mathcal E} (Ω)\,$ (known as {\em torsional rigidity} associated to $Ω$) among all domains of prescribed volume $v$. Our results show that for a given Riemannian manifold which is strictly isoperimetric at one of its points the maximum of such functional is realized by the geodesic ball centered at this point. More generally, we prove estimates for the functional $\, {\mathcal E} (Ω)\,$ by comparison with symmetrized domains. We also investigate on finding sharp upper bounds for the functional $\, {\mathcal E} (Ω)\,$, under certain conditions on the geometry of $\,(M,g)\,$ and of $Ω$. Finally we find an universal upper bound for $\, {\mathcal E} (Ω)\,$ in terms of the isoperimetric Cheeger constant.
