Phase-matching in high-order harmonic generation with a plasma-reshaped driving field

The transition from titanium-sapphire to ytterbium-based laser technology enables turnkey implementations of high-order harmonic generation (HHG) setups at high repetition rates, opening up new applications, e.g., in semiconductor metrology. This, however, requires exploring and understanding the impact of new experimental conditions. Here, we study HHG in neon over the spectral range 8-17 nm with high spectral resolution, using a post-compressed ytterbium laser. Our measurements reveal a large pulse-energy- and pressure-dependent spectral shift, spanning more than two harmonic orders. The femto-chirp of the harmonic emission combined with the blueshift of the fundamental field allows us to relate the observed spectral shifts to the temporal window of harmonic generation, which is determined by phase-matching. To understand these dynamics, it is essential to consider the reshaping of the driving laser field inside the plasma, despite the low driving intensity and long pulse duration. We introduce an on-axis phase-matching description that captures these effects and reproduces the experimental and simulated trends. These results demonstrate the central role of plasma-induced laser reshaping in phase-matching of HHG, which should be accounted for when optimizing sources in a multi-parameter landscape.

XUV yield optimization of two-color high-order harmonic generation in gases

We perform an experimental two-color high-order harmonic generation study in argon with the fundamental of an ytterbium ultrashort pulse laser and its second harmonic. The intensity of the second harmonic and its phase relative to the fundamental are varied, in a large range compared to earlier works, while keeping the total intensity constant. We extract the optimum values for the relative phase and ratio of the two colors which lead to a maximum yield enhancement for each harmonic order in the extreme ultraviolet spectrum. Within the semi-classical three-step model, the yield maximum can be associated with a flat electron return time vs. return energy distribution. An analysis of different distributions allows to predict the required relative two-color phase and ratio for a given harmonic order, total laser intensity, fundamental wavelength, and ionization potential.

Divergence control of high-harmonic generation

We show that the divergence of extreme ultraviolet pulses from high harmonic generation, which is directly linked to the shape and size of the refocused beam, can be controlled by the relative delay between the fundamental and its intense orthogonally polarized second harmonic in two-color high-harmonic generation. We find that the divergence is minimized close to the delays were the number of emitted photons is maximized. These findings are rationalized as suppression and enhancement of long and short electron trajectories as function of the phase of the two-color laser field, respectively. The orthogonally polarized second harmonic introduces a lateral momentum component that can select one trajectory whereas it deflects the other. At the same time, the second harmonic profoundly influences the tunnel ionization process that initiates high-harmonic generation, which provides another trajectory gate. Our scheme for controlling the divergence facilitates larger numerical apertures for extreme ultraviolet microscopy. In addition, the associated reduction of the size of the focus is beneficial for extreme ultraviolet nonlinear optics and spectroscopy, as well as imaging and metrology of embedded structures.
