A lecture on Navier-Stokes equations

The content of the following pages was part of a special topics lecture given at the Australian National University during the first semester of 2026. That was a very nice expericence, I really enjoyed giving this 12 weeks (2 hours a week) lecture. It is meant to be self contained, starting with results on Fourier transform and Sobolev spaces. As a toy model, before treating the Navier-Stokes system, we focus on the non linear heat equation where the non linearity is polynomial. Ultimately, we prove existence and uniqueness of mild solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations in critical spaces. This script contains some exercises and the text of the mid-semester exam as well as the final exam.

The Hall problem in domains

In this paper, we develop a framework based on differential forms that enables us to deal with the Hall problem on domains in any dimension $n\ge2$. In the case of smooth bounded domains of $R^n$, we prove local existence of mild solutions in subcritical spaces.

Strong solutions to the Keller-Segel-Navier-Stokes system in bounded Lipschitz domains

Consider the coupled Keller-Segel-Navier-Stokes or the chemotaxis-consumption-Navier-Stokes system in bounded Lipschitz domains for general coupling terms which, e.g., include buoyancy forces. It is shown that these systems admit local strong as well as global strong solutions for small data in the setting of critical Besov spaces. Moreover, non-trivial equilibria are shown to be exponentially stable. For smoother data, these solutions are shown to be globally bounded and to preserve positivity properties. The approach presented is based on optimal $\mathrm{L}^q$-regularity properties of the Neumann Laplacian and the Stokes operator in bounded Lipschitz domains.

On existence and uniqueness for non-autonomous parabolic Cauchy problems with rough coefficients

We consider existence and uniqueness issues for the initial value problem of parabolic equations $\partial_{t} u = {\rm div} A \nabla u$ on the upper half space, with initial data in $L^p$ spaces. The coefficient matrix $A$ is assumed to be uniformly elliptic, but merely bounded measurable in space and time. For real coefficients and a single equation, this is an old topic for which a comprehensive theory is available, culminating in the work of Aronson. Much less is understood for complex coefficients or systems of equations except for the work of Lions, mainly because of the failure of maximum principles. In this paper, we come back to this topic with new methods that do not rely on maximum principles. This allows us to treat systems in this generality when $p\geq 2$, or under certain assumptions such as bounded variation in the time variable (a much weaker assumption that the usual Hölder continuity assumption) when $p< 2$. We reobtain results for real coefficients, and also complement them. For instance, we obtain uniqueness for arbitrary $L^p$ data, $1\leq p \leq \infty$, in the class $L^\infty(0,T; L^p({\mathbb{R}}^n))$. Our approach to the existence problem relies on a careful construction of propagators for an appropriate energy space, encompassing previous constructions. Our approach to the uniqueness problem, the most novel aspect here, relies on a parabolic version of the Kenig-Pipher maximal function, used in the context of elliptic equations on non-smooth domains. We also prove comparison estimates involving conical square functions of Lusin type and prove some Fatou type results about non-tangential convergence of solutions. Recent results on maximal regularity operators in tent spaces that do not require pointwise heat kernel bounds are key tools in this study.

Maximal regularity as a tool for partial differential equations

In the last decades, a lot of progress has been made on the subject of maximal regularity. The property of maximal $L^p$ regularity is an a priori estimate and reads as follows: For A the negative generator of an analytic semigroup on a Banach space $X$, for $1 0$ a constant such that for all $f\in L^p(0,T;X)$, there exists a unique solution $u\in L^p(0,T;D(A))\cap W^{1,p}(0,T;X)$ of the equation $\partial_t(u)+Au=f$, $u(0)=0$ with the estimate $$\|\partial_t(u) \|_{L^p(0,T;X)} + \|Au\|_{L^p(0,T;X)}\le C_p \|f\|_{L^p(0,T;X)} ?$$ It started with a paper by De Simon in 1964 in which the author proved maximal $L^p$ regularity for negative generators of analytic semigroups in Hilbert spaces. The next big step has been made by Dore and Venni in their 1987 paper on operators admitting bounded imaginary powers. The final result on maximal regularity was done by Weis in his 2001 paper where he gave a characterisation of negative generators of analytic semigroups in Banach spaces which have the maximal regularity property. These results are all about linear theory of unbounded operators in Banach spaces. I will then show how to use this property to find solutions or to prove uniqueness of solutions of semi linear partial differential equations of parabolic type such as the non linear heat equation and the Navier-Stokes system.

Behaviour of the Stokes operators under domain perturbation

Depending of the geometry of the domain, one can define --at least-- three different Stokes operators with Dirichlet boundary conditions. We describe how the resolvents of these Stokes operators converge with respect to a converging sequence of domains.

Hodge-Dirac, Hodge-Laplacian and Hodge-Stokes operators in L^p spaces on Lipschitz domains

This paper concerns Hodge-Dirac operators D = d + $δ$ acting in L p ($Ω$, λ) where $Ω$ is a bounded open subset of R n satisfying some kind of Lipschitz condition, λ is the exterior algebra of R n , d is the exterior derivative acting on the de Rham complex of differential forms on $Ω$, and $δ$ is the interior derivative with tangential boundary conditions. In L 2 ($Ω$, λ), $δ$ = d * and D is self-adjoint, thus having bounded resolvents (I + itD) --1 t$\in$R as well as a bounded functional calculus in L 2 ($Ω$, λ). We investigate the range of values p H \textless{} p \textless{} p H about p = 2 for which D has bounded resolvents and a bounded holomorphic functional calculus in L p ($Ω$, λ). On domains which we call very weakly Lipschitz, we show that this is the same range of values as for which L p ($Ω$, λ) has a Hodge (or Helmholz) decomposition, being an open interval that includes 2. The Hodge-Laplacian Δ is the square of the Hodge-Dirac operator, i.e. --Δ = D 2 , so it also has a bounded functional calculus in L p ($Ω$, λ) when p H \textless{} p \textless{} p H. But the Stokes operator with Hodge boundary conditions, which is the restriction of --Δ to the subspace of divergence free vector fields in L p ($Ω$, λ 1) with tangential boundary conditions , has a bounded holomorphic functional calculus for further values of p, namely for max{1, p H S } \textless{} p \textless{} p H where p H S is the Sobolev exponent below p H , given by 1/p H S = 1/p H + 1/n, so that p H S \textless{} 2n/(n + 2). In 3 dimensions, p H S \textless{} 6/5. We show also that for bounded strongly Lipschitz domains $Ω$, p H \textless{} 2n/(n + 1) \textless{} 2n/(n -- 1) \textless{} p H , in agreement with the known results that p H \textless{} 4/3 \textless{} 4 \textless{} p H in dimension 2, and p H \textless{} 3/2 \textless{} 3 \textless{} p H in dimension 3. In both dimensions 2 and 3, p H S \textless{} 1 , implying that the Stokes operator has a bounded functional calculus in L p ($Ω$, λ 1) when $Ω$ is strongly Lipschitz and 1 \textless{} p \textless{} p H .

Maximal regularity for non-autonomous Robin boundary conditions

We consider a non-autonomous Cauchy problem involving linear operators associated with time-dependent forms $a(t;.,.):V\times V\to {\mathbb{C}}$ where $V$ and $H$ are Hilbert spaces such that $V$ is continuously embedded in $H$. We prove $H$-maximal regularity under a new regularity condition on the form $a$ with respect to time; namely H{ö}lder continuity with values in an interpolation space. This result is best suited to treat Robin boundary conditions. The maximal regularity allows one to use fixed point arguments to some non linear parabolic problems with Robin boundary conditions.

The incompressible Navier-Stokes system with time-dependent Robin-type boundary conditions

We show that the incompressible 3D Navier-Stokes system in a C 1;1 bounded domain or a bounded convex domain with a non penetration condition u = 0 at the boundary @ together with a time-dependent Robin boundary condition of the type curl u = (t)u on @ admits a solution with enough regularity provided the initial condition is small enough in an appropriate functional space.

Singular integral operators on tent spaces

We extend the recent results concerning boundedness of the maximal regularity operator on tent spaces. This leads us to develop a singular integral operator theory on tent spaces. Such operators have operator-valued kernels. A seemingly appropriate condition on the kernel is time-space decay measured by off-diagonal estimates with various exponents.

The maximal regularity operator on tent spaces

Recently, Auscher and Axelsson gave a new approach to non-smooth boundary value problems with $L^{2}$ data, that relies on some appropriate weighted maximal regularity estimates. As part of the development of the corresponding $L^{p}$ theory, we prove here the relevant weighted maximal estimates in tent spaces $T^{p,2}$ for $p$ in a certain open range. We also study the case $p=\infty$.

Navier-Stokes equations in arbitrary domains : the Fujita-Kato scheme

Navier-Stokes equations are investigated in a functional setting in 3D open sets, bounded or not, without assuming any regularity of the boundary. The main idea is to find a correct definition of the Stokes operator in a suitable Hilbert space of divergence-free vectors and apply the Fujita-Kato method, a fixed point procedure, to get a local strong solution.
